Abstract

Rutile pigment is improved as regards photochemical stability by slurrying it with water, treating the slurry with a water-soluble silicate, an aluminium and a cerium salt, and adding alkali to the mixture until a neutral or alkaline reaction is obtained, thus producing a coating of a silicon, an aluminium and a cerium compound on the pigment which is then recovered. In an example, rutile pigment is slurried with water, and solutions of water-glass, aluminium sulphate, ceric sulphate and ammonia are added, with intermediate stirring and a final stirring during which the pH is maintained at 8.1. The solids were then removed by filtration, washed, dried and milled to a fine particle size.
