Abstract

An aqueous suspension of pigmentary titanium dioxide is produced by miling raw titanium dioxide, forming an aqueous slurry of the milled material, subjecting the material, if desired, to a wet coating process, adjusting the solids content of the slurry to between 30% and 90%, preferably between 40% and 70%, by weight and adding a minor proportion of a water-soluble natural or synthetic polymer. The raw titanium dioxide, for example rutile or anatase obtained from the initial manufacturing process and prior to development of the pigmentary properties, is preferably subjected to sand milling in the form of an aqueous slurry, for example by agitating the slurry with a grinding medium having a mean particle size of from 300 to 1000, preferably of from 500 to 900, microns. The milled titanium dioxide may be wet coated with hydrous oxides of titanium, aluminium, silicon, zirconium and/or cerium, and/or with a phosphate. The water-soluble polymer may be an alkali metal or ammonium polyacrylate or polyvinylalcoholate, or alginate, glue, casein, starch or gelatine, or a cellulose derivative, for example a sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, a methyl cellulose, an ethyl hydroxy- or ethyl hydroxyethyl-cellulose or a hydroxypropyl cellulose. To inhibit attack by micro-organisms a phenyl mercuric compound, an alkali metal phenate, chlorophenate or phenylphenate or a chlorinated metacresol may also be added. An anionic dispersing agent, for example an alkali metal phosphate or silicate, sodium or ammonium polyacrylate or polycarbonate, or an alkali metal salt of a napththalene-formaldehyde condensate or lignosulphonate, may also be added, preferably after a washing step which follows the coating step but prior to the formation of the final suspension by adjustment of the solids content; to enhance the action of the dispersing agent, where this is present, a small amount of alkali, for example alkali metal or ammonium hydroxide, may also be added. Preferred amounts of coating materials, water-soluble polymer and anionic dispersing agent, based on the titanium dioxide content of the suspension, are given in the Specification together with numerous examples describing the preparation of such sedimentation-resisting aqueous suspensions.
