Abstract
Metal oxides are produced by partially dehydrating the hydrated sulphate, e.g. ferrous, zinc, or copper sulphate, by introducing it, in crystalline form, into suspension in a heated gas, and thereafter subjecting it to a higher temperature to decompose it to the oxide. The degree of dehydration may correspond with the trihydrate, so as to ensure that the material does not fuse or coalesce in the later heat treatment. A suitable drying plant is disclosed in Specification 592,354, [Group XIII]. A rotary furnace or kiln or multi-hearth (Herreshoff) furnace may be used for the roasting, a temperature of 600-1000 DEG C. being suitable. Carbon may be added to the partially dehydrated sulphate before roasting. Specification 510,733 also is referred to.
