Claims (10)

DE/EP 0 77786 Patentansprüche:
1. Verbesserter Polarisator, der folgendes umfaßt:
(a) ein Polarisatorelement und
(b) ein das Polarisatorelement im wesentlichen berührendes Array aus konisch zulaufenden Wellenleitern, wobei:
(i) sich das konisch zulaufende Ende jedes der
Wellenleiter von dem Polarisatorelement aus nach außen erstreckt,
(ü) jeder der Wellenleiter eine Lichteintrittsfläche neben dem Polarisatorelement (a) und eine von der Lichteintrittsfläche entfernte Lichtaustrittsfläche aufweist,
(iii) der Flächeninhalt der Lichteintrittsfläche jedes der Wellenleiter größer ist als der Flächeninhalt seiner Lichtaustrittsfläche und
(iv) die Wellenleiter in dem Array durch
Zwischenbereiche voneinander getrennt sind, die einen niedrigeren Brechungsindex aufweisen als die Wellenleiter.
2. Verbesserter Polarisator nach Anspruch 1, der weiterhin folgendes umfaßt:
(c) ein Substrat, bei dem das Polarisatorelement (a) das Array von konisch zulaufenden Wellenleitern (b) von dem Substrat (c) trennt, und
(d) eine Klebeschicht, bei der das Substrat (c) den Polarisator (a) von der Klebeschicht (d) trennt.
3. Verbesserter Polarisator nach Anspruch 2, der weiterhin folgendes umfaßt:
(e) eine Schutzschicht neben dem konisch zulaufenden Ende der Wellenleiter.

4. Verbesserter Polarisator nach Anspruch 3, der weiterhin folgendes umfaßt:
(f) eine Flüssigkristallzelle, bei der die Klebeschicht (d) das Substrat (c) von der Flüssigkristallzelle (f) trennt.
5. Verbesserter Polarisator nach Anspruch 4, der weiterhin folgendes umfaßt:
(g) ein Farbfiltergitterarray.
6. Verbesserter Polarisator nach Anspruch 1, bei dem das Polarisatorelement so ausgerichtet ist, daß es Licht liefert, das parallel zu der durch die horizontale Blickachse und die senkrecht zu der horizontalen Blickachse stehende Achse definierten Ebene polarisiert ist.
7. Verbesserter Polarisator nach Anspruch 1, bei dem das Polarisatorelement so ausgerichtet ist, daß es Licht liefert, das parallel zu der durch die Nebenachse des WellenleiterquerSchnitts und die senkrecht zu dem Wellenleiterquerschnitt stehende Achse definierten Ebene polarisiert ist.
8. Verbesserter Polarisator nach Anspruch 1, bei dem der Querschnitt der Lichteintrittsfläche jedes der Wellenleiter von etwa 10 Mikrometer bis etwa 100 Mikrometer und der Querschnitt der Lichtaustrittsfläche jedes der Wellenleiter von etwa 5 bis etwa 50 Mikrometer beträgt.
9. Verbesserter Polarisator nach Anspruch 1, bei dem der Abstand zwischen dem Polarisatorelement (a) und dem Array aus konisch zulaufenden Wellenleitern (b) weniger als etwa 250 Mikrometer beträgt.
10. Verbesserter Polarisator nach Anspruch 1, bei dem der Abstand zwischen dem Polarisatorelement (a) und dem Array aus konisch zulaufenden Wellenleitern (b) von etwa 25 Mikrometer bis etwa 0 Mikrometer beträgt.
