Description
20 Die Erfindung bezieht sich auf ein Antioxidationsmittelsystem, das aus einer phenylierten Naphthylaminverbindung,
einer Sulfoxidverbindung und ggf. Kupfer oder Kupferverbindungen besteht, auf Schmieröle, in die
das Antioxidationsmittelsystem eingemischt ist, wodurch dem
25 öl ein unerwartet hohes Maß an Beständigkeit gegenüber dem
oxidativen Abbau verliehen wird, und auf die Verwendung des Antioxidationsmittelsystems zur Stabilisierung von Schmierölen.
30 Erfindungsgemäß wurde überraschenderweise gefunden,
daß durch Beimischung eines bestimmte stickstoffhaltige
Verbindungen, bestimmte Sulfoxidverbindungen und ggf. Kupfer oder Kupferverbindungen enthaltenden Stabilisatorsystems

hat.
Als stickstoffhaltige Verbindungen werden erfindungsgemäß
die phenylierten Naphthylamine und deren Derivate eingesetzt. Diese Verbindungen haben die Formeln
oder
worin R1 und R_ Wasserstoff, Alkyl mit 1 bis 12 C-Atomen,
Aryl mit 6 bis 20 C-Atomen oder Aralkyl oder Alkaryl mit 7 bis 20 C-Atomen sein können. Einige dieser phenylierten
Naphthylamine sind aus der US-Patentschrift 3 505 225 bekannt, auf die in der vorliegenden Beschreibung Bezug genommen
wird. R- ist vorzugsweise Wasserstoff, t-Pentyl,
1,1',3,3'-Tetramethylbutyl, 1,1',3,3',5,5'-Hexamethylhexyl,
di,ob-Dimethylbenzyl oder Triphenylmethyl, und R2 ist vorzugsweise
Wasserstoff, ot/,d/ -Dimethylbenzyl, c£-Methylbenzhydryl,
Triphenylmethyl oder οώ, elf -p-Trimethylbenzyl.
Besonders geeignet sind Phenyl-cG-naphthylamin, N- (4- oO,cO Dime
thy lbenzy lphenyl) -^"naphthylamin, p-0ctylphenyl-fi6-naphthylamin
und Phenyl-ß-naphthylamin. Auch die oxidierten
Formen dieser phenylierten Naphthylamine können eingesetzt werden.

Die erfindungsgemäß einzusetzenden Sulfoxidverbindungen
sind Verbindungen, die in dem öl löslich sind und bei denen zumindest eine Arylgruppe an dem Sulfinylrest
hängt. Die andere Gruppe, die an dem Sulfinylrest hängt,
kann entweder eine Arylgruppe oder eine Alkylgruppe sein, die keine ß-Wasserstoffatome besitzt. Diese andere Gruppe
ist vorzugsweise Phenyl, substituiertes Phenyl, Naphthyl oder Methyl. Die Substituenten an der Phenylgruppe können

Hydrazide usw.), Amino-, Aryl-, Aryloxy-, Keto- oder Aldehydgruppen sein.
Die erste Arylgruppe kann in gleicher Weise eine Phenyl-, substituierte Phenyl- oder Naphthylgruppe sein.
Die Phenylgruppe kann die gleichen Substituenten wie vorstehend beschrieben haben.
Das Antioxidationsmittelsystem kann zusätzlich zu dem phenylierten Naphthylamin und dem SuIfoxid ggf. des weiteren
eine oligodynamische Menge von Kupfer oder einem Kupfersalz enthalten.
Das Kupfer kann in verschiedener Form und auf verschiedene Weise zu dem öl hinzugegeben werden, wobei vorausgesetzt
sein muß, daß das Kupfer in einer Menge von weniger als etwa 25 ppm, vorzugsweise von 0,01 ppm bis 5 ppm, vorhanden
ist, um in synergistische Wechselwirkung mit den anderen Bestandteilen zu treten. Das Kupfer kann in Form eines
verträglichen, löslichen Salzes, vorzugsweise eines organischen Salzes wegen der größeren Löslichkeit in dem Öl, zu
dem öl hinzugegeben werden. Alternativ kann ein Stück Kupfer so in das öl gebracht werden, daß das öl damit in Kontakt ist.
Drittens kann das Kupfer dadurch eingeführt werden, daß das Kupfer in der Maschine, dem Motor oder der Einrichtung, in

der das Öl verwendet wird, vorliegt, das heißt, daß das Kupfer durch den Kontakt des Öls mit der metallischen Oberfläche
der Maschine oder des Motors zur Verfügung gestellt wird.

Wenn das Kupfer in Form eines Salzes zu dem Öl hinzugegeben wird, werden als Salze z.B. Naphthenate,Stearate,
Acetylacetonate, Octanoate, Decanoate und andere solche Salze mit langkettigen Resten bevorzugt.

Die synthetischen Kohlenwasserstofföle, zu denen das
erfindungsgemäße Antioxidationsmittelsystem hinzugegeben wird, sind diejenigen öle, die durch Oligomerisierung unter
Bildung eines Schmieröls aus Cfj -Olefinen mit 3 bis 14 ΟΙ
5 Atomen wie Propen, Buten, Penten, Hexen, Hepten, Octen, Nonen, Decen, ündecen, Dodecen, Tridecen und Tetradecen
hergestellt werden. Die erfindungsgemäß verwendbaren, synthetischen
Kohlenwasserstofföle haben normalerweise ein durchschnittliches Molekulargewicht, das im wesentlichen
zwischen etwa 280 und 2000, vorzugsweise zwischen 350 und 1500 liegt. Das synthetische Kohlenwasserstofföl darf nur
in einem geringen Maße ungesättigt sein, denn es wurde festgestellt, daß eine weitgehend direkte Beziehung zwischen
der Molzahl der ungesättigten Bindungen (C = C) und der Wirksamkeit des Antioxidationsmittelsystems besteht. Daher
sollte das synthetische öl weniger als etwa 0,25 mol, vorzugsweise
weniger als 0,15 mol und insbesondere weniger als 0,05 mol ungesättigte Bindungen pro 1000 g öl aufweisen.
Die Mineralöle ,bei denen das erfindungsgemäße Antioxidationsmittelsystem
zu den Ergebnissen führt, die auf einer synergistischen Wirkung beruhen, sind Mineralöle auf
Kohlenwasserstoff-Basis, die im wesentlichen säurefrei sind und weniger als etv/a 0,15 mol, vorzugsweise weniger als 0,1
mol und insbesondere weniger als 0,05 mol ungesättigte Bindungen pro 1000 g Öl aufweisen. Der Unterschied zwischen

synthetischen Kohlenwasserstoffölen und Mineralölen in
bezug auf den Gehalt an ungesättigten Bindungen, der erlaubt ist, beruht auf der den Mineralölen innewohnenden,
größeren Instabilität.

Die Esteröle, für die das erfindungsgemäße Antioxidationsmittelsystem
geeignet ist, sind synthetische Schmiermittel auf der Basis von einem oder mehreren organischen
Carbonsäureestern, die zur Verwendung bei einer Betriebstemperatur
von etwa 2O4°C oder darüber vorgesehen sind.
Beispiele für solche Öle sind die Öle auf der Basis eines Diesters aus einer zweibasigen Säure und einem einwertigen
Alkohol, zum Beispiel Dioctylsebacat oder Dinonyladipat, auf der Basis eines Triesters aus Trimethylolpropan und
einer einbasigen Säure oder einem Gemisch von einbasigen Säuren, zum Beispiel Trimethylolpropantripelargonat oder
Trimethylolpropantricaprylat, auf der Basis eines Tetraesters aus Pentaerythrit und einer einbasigen Säure oder einem Gemisch
einbasiger Säuren, zum Beispiel Pentaerythrittetracaprylat, auf der Basis von komplexen Estern aus einbasigen
Säuren, zweibasigen Säuren und mehrwertigen Alkoholen oder auf der Basis von Gemischen solcher Ester.
Die Bestandteile des erfindungsgemäßen Antioxidationsmittelsystems,
die in beliebiger Reihenfolge zu dem öl hinzugegeben werden können, werden in den nachstehend angegebenen
Mengen eingesetzt. Das phenylierte Naphthylamin wird in einer Menge eingesetzt, die zwischen etwa 0,15 Gew.T.
und 3,0 Gew.T., vorzugsweise zwischen 0,2 Gew.T. und 1,25 Gew.T.,
insbesondere zwischen 0,3 Gew.T. und 0,6 Gew.T. pro 100 Gew.T.
des Öls variiert. Das Amin wird im allgemeinen nur dann in einer Menge von mehr als 1,25 Gew.T. eingesetzt, wenn das öl
unter scharfen Bedingungen, zum Beispiel bei Temperaturen über 218°C, verwendet werden soll, und normalerweise nur in
Esterölen.

Das Gewichtsverhältnis, in dem das SuIfoxid und das Amin eingesetzt werden, liegt zwischen 1:10 und 1:1. Zwar
können Sulfoxid und Amin in einem größeren Gewichtsverhältnis als 1:1 verwendet werden, jedoch scheint die zusätzliehe
SuIfoxidmenge keinen Vorteil zu bieten. Zum Beispiel
werden bei Verwendung von 0,5 Teilen des phenylierten Naphthylamins 0,05 bis 0,5 Teile Sulfoxid eingesetzt.
In dem öl sollten weniger als etwa 25 ppm Kupfer, bezogen auf das Gewichts des Öls, vorhanden sein. Das Kupfer
wird vorzugsweise in einer Menge von 0,01 ppm bis 5 ppm, bezogen auf das Gewicht des Öls, eingesetzt.
Man kann auch die Bestandteile des Antioxidationsmittelsystems
vormischen und die resultierende Mischung zu dem öl hinzugeben. Diese vorgemischte Mischung enthält
1 Gew.T, bis 10 Gew.T. des phenylierten Naphthylamins pro
1 Gew.T. des Sulfoxids und ggf. Kupfer in einer Menge,
die nach Zugabe des Antioxidationsmittelsystems zu dem öl zu einer Kupferkonzentration von weniger als 25 ppm, vorzugsweise
von 0,01 ppm bis 5 ppm, bezogen auf das Gewicht des Öls, führt.
In der vorliegenden Beschreibung werden die nachstehenden Kriterien zur Bewertung der Wirksamkeit eines
Antioxidationsmittels für Schmieröle herangezogen: 1) die Menge des gebildeten Schlamms, 2} die Änderung der Viskosität,
3) die Änderung der Neutralisationszahl und 4) die Gewichtsänderung der getesteten Metalle. Nachdem die ölprobe, die
das erfindungsgemäße Antioxidationsmittelsystem enthält,
72 h lang bei 188°C gealtert worden ist, sollte idealerweise 1) keine Schlammbildung und keine Änderung 2) der anfänglichen
Viskosität, 3) der Neutralisationszahl und 4) des Gewichts der Metalle eingetreten sein. Das Schmieröl wird
vom geschäftlichen Gesichtspunkt aus um so zufriedenstellender sein,je näher es in seinem Verhalten an die vorstehend beschriebenen,
idealen Standardbedingungen herankommt.

Die Erfindung wird durch die nachstehenden Beispiele näher erläutert. In diesen Beispielen bedeutet "N.Z." die
Neutralisationszahl (bestimmt unter Anwendung des ASTM-Testverfahrens
D974-55T) , und "%AV1OO" bedeutet die Änderung
in Prozent der Saybolt-Viskosität bei 37,8°C (Messung der
Saybolt-Viskosität bei 37,80C unter Anwendung des ASTM-Testverfahrens
D445-53T). Das nicht gealterte Öl hatte in allen Beispielen eine Neutralisationszahl von im wesentlichen
Null.

In diesem Beispiel wird der hervorragende synergistische
Effekt gezeigt, den die Verwendung des erfindungsgemäßen
Stabilisatorsystems in bezug auf den Schutz eines synthetischen Kohlenwasserstofföls mit einem niedrigen Anteil an
ungesättigten Bindungen vor dem oxidativen Abbau hat. Als öl wurde ein öl auf Polyocten-Basis mit 0,20 mol ungesättigten
Bindungen pro 1000 g Öl und einem durchschnittlichen Molekulargewicht von etwa 600 verwendet.
Um die Wirksamkeit des Stabilisatorsystems zu bewerten, wurden verschiedene Proben hergestellt. Probe A wurde
durch Zugabe von Phenyl-Ot'-naphthylamin und Diphenylsulfoxid
in den in Tabelle 1 angegebenen Mengen zu 100 g (etwa 125 ml ) des Öls auf Polyocten-Basis und Erhitzen auf etwa 100°C, um
die Auflösung der Zusatzstoffe zu erleichtern, hergestellt. Das Kupfer wurde in Metallform, und zwar in Form einer Metallscheibe
wie nachstehend beschrieben, hinzugegeben. Andere Proben enthielten das Amin, Diphenylsulfid oder Diphenylsulfon
und Kupfermetall. Die im Einzelfall eingesetzten Mengen sind in Tabelle 1 angegeben.
Jede Probe wurde nach dem nachstehend beschriebenen Testverfahren geprüft: Eine 100-ral-Probe mit der in Tabelle

angegebenen Zusammensetzung wurde in eine Testzelle aus Pyrexglas gegossen und gealtert, indem man ein Ende eines
Lufteinleitungsrohrs aus Glas in die Testzelle einführte, während der restliche Anteil (25 ml) jeder Originalölprobe
beiseite gestellt und in bezug auf die Neutralisationszahl und die Saybolt-Viskosität bei 37,8°C analysiert wurde.
Um das vorstehend beschriebene, in das Öl eingetauchte Einleitungsrohr herum wurden in einer Menge von 0 bis 4 Stück
Scheiben aus verschiedenen Metallen (Mg, Cu, Ag und Fe) plaziert. Im Fall der Verwendung von mehreren Scheiben wurden
diese durch Abstandhalter aus Glas voneinander getrennt. Diese Scheiben blieben während des Alterungsverfahrens in
dem öl und dienten dazu, das Ausmaß der durch das alternde öl verursachten Korrosion des Metalls anzuzeigen. Die Testzelle
wurde mit einem Rückflußkühler ausgerüstet, und die ganze Anordnung wurde in einen auf einer konstanten Temperatur
gehaltenen Aluminiumblock gebracht. Während die Anordnung auf einer Temperatur von 188°C gehalten wurde, wurde Luft
mit einer Geschwindigkeit von 5 l/h durch das Öl strömen gelassen. Diese Alterungsbedingungen wurden 72 h lang aufrechterhalten,
dann wurde das Öl heiß filtriert und der Schlamm, der sich gebildet hatte, wurde gesammelt und gewogen.
Das filtrierte öl wurde analysiert, um Änderungen in der Neutralisationszahl und der Saybolt-Viskosität bei 37,8°C
zu bestimmen.
Die Metallscheiben, die am Anfang gewogen worden waren, wurden sorgfältig gewaschen und wieder gewogen, um die Gewichtsänderung zu bestimmen.

Die Angaben in Tabelle 1 zeigen, daß, wenn man ein SuIfoxid, zum Beispiel Diphenylsulfoxid, ein phenyliertes
Naphthylamin, zum Beispiel Phenyl-Ofr-naphthylamin, und
metallisches Kupfer zu einem synthetischen Kohlenwasserstofföl hinzugibt, das gealterte Öl hervorragende Eigenschaften

hat: die Änderung der Viskosität oder der Neutralisationszahl ist sehr gering, es bildet sich sehr wenig Schlamm
und das Gewicht der Metalle ändert sich im wesentlichen nicht.
Im Gegensatz dazu ist das öl, wenn Diphenylsulfid
oder Diphenylsulfon zusammen mit dem Ainin und Kupfer verwendet werden, gegenüber dem oxidativen Abbau vollkommen
ungeschützt, was daraus hervorgeht, daß das öl nicht filtriert werden kann, weil sich eine übermäßige Menge Schlamm gebildet
hat und weil die Viskosität angestiegen ist.

In diesem Beispiel wird die synergistische Wirkung gezeigt, die zwischen dem Amin und den Sulfoxidverbindungen
besteht. Das Verfahren von Beispiel 1 wurde wiederholt, wobei die in Tabelle 2 angegebenen Antioxidationsmittelsysteme
eingesetzt wurden. Die Probe D enthielt das Amin ohne das SuIfoxid; die Probe E enthielt das SuIfoxid ohne
das Amin; und die Probe F enthielt sowohl das Amin als auch das SuIfoxid.
Aus den Ergebnissen geht hervor, daß dem öl im wesentlichen kein Schutz verliehen wird, wenn man das Amin
oder das Sulfoxid allein verwendet, selbst wenn man Kupfer einsetzt, während das Öl weitgehend geschützt wird, wenn man
erfindungsgemäß das Amin und das Sulfoxid zusammen verwendet.

Dieses Beispiel zeigt die Schutzwirkung, die synthetischen Kohlenwasserstoffölen mit einem verschiedenen Gehalt
an ungesättigten Bindungen durch ein erfindungsgemäßes Antioxidationsmittelsystem
verliehen wird.
Das Verfahren von Beispiel 1 wurde angewendet, um Proben herzustellen und zu testen, die Diphenylsulfoxid und
Phenyl- cfr-naphthylamin (0,25 Gew.T. bzw. 0,50 Gew.T. pro
Gew.T. Polyoctenöl) und eine Kupferscheibe enthielten.
Aus den Angaben in Tabelle 3 geht hervor, daß den synthetischen Kohlenwasserstoffölen mit einem größeren
Sättigungsgrad durch das erfindungsgemäße Antioxidationsmittelsystem ein besserer Schutz verliehen wird.

Dieses Beispiel zeigt die Schutzwirkung, die Mineral-
und Esterölen durch ein erfindungsgemäßes Antioxidationsmittelsystem verliehen wird.
Als Mineralöl wurde ein hochraffiniertes Weißöl (ERVOL
von Witco Chemical) mit einer Saybolt-Viskosität von 137,7 SUS
bei 37,8°C verwendet. Als Esteröl wurde Trimethylolpropantriheptanoat verwendet.
Die Proben wurden nach dem Verfahren von Beispiel 1 hergestellt und getestet.
Aus den Testergebnissen in Tabelle 4 geht hervor, daß beide öle geschützt wurden, wenn das erfindungsgemäße, synergistische
Antioxidationsmittelsystem eingesetzt wurde, während das nicht geschützte Mineralöl (ohne das Antioxidationsmittelsystem)
nicht einmal filtriert werden konnte (Probe K).

Aus den Ergebnissen von Tabelle 6 geht hervor, daß die Sulfoxide am wirksamsten sind, bei denen direkt an der
Sulfinylgruppe zumindest eine aromatische Gruppe, jedoch keine Alkylgruppe mit einem ß-Wasserstoffatom, hängt (Proben
P, Q, R7 S. T, U), bei diesen handelt es sich um erfindungsgemäße
Sulfoxide.
Die in den Proben V, W, X7 Y, Z und AA verwendeten
Sulfoxide gehören aus folgenden Gründen nicht zu den erfindungsgemäß eingesetzten SuIfoxiden: Das SuIfoxid von Probe V
war in dem öl nicht löslich, die Sulfoxide der Proben W, X, Y und AA enthielten alle in der ß-Stellung der an der
Sulfinylgruppe hängenden Alkylgruppe Wasserstoffatome, und
das Sulfoxid der Probe Z wies keine an der Sulfinylgruppe
hängende Arylgruppe auf.
Dieses Beispiel zeigt die Wirkung des Kupfers in dem erfindungsgemäßen Antioxidationsmittelsystem. Die Proben
wurden wie in Beispiel 1 hergestellt und getestet, jedoch wurde das Kupfer in Form von Kupfernaphthenat hinzugegeben.
Alle Proben enthielten 0,25 Teile Diphenylsulfoxid und 0,50 Teile Phenyl-^-naphthylamin pro 100 Teile öl. In keiner der
Proben waren Metallscheiben enthalten.

Aus Tabelle 7 geht hervor, daß die Verwendung von Kupfer in kleinen Mengen, das heißt in Mengen von 5 ppm
oder weniger, am effektivsten ist. Bei höheren Kupferkonzentrationen, das heißt bei Konzentrationen über 25 ppm,
tritt eine übermäßige Schlammbildung ein.

Claims (14)
1. Antioxidationsmittelsystem für die Verwendung in einem öl, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß es
(a) ein phenyliertes Naphthylamin und
(b) ein in Öl lösliches Diarylsulfoxid oder Arylalkylsulfoxid,
worin die Alkylgruppe in ß-Stellung zu der SuIfinylgruppe frei von Wasserstoffatomen ist, enthält.
2. Antioxidationsmittelsystem nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß es als phenyliertes Naphthylamin
eine oxidierte oder nichtoxidierte Form einer Verbindung mit einer der folgenden Formeln :

3. Antioxidationsmittelsystem nach Anspruch 1 oder
2, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß es als phenyliertes Naphthylamin Phenyl-C^-naphthylamin, N- (4- CU,OJ -Dimethylbenzylphenyl) W-naphthylamin,
p-Octylphenyl-ÖP-naphthylamin oder Phenylß-naphthylamin
enthält.
4. Antioxidationsmittelsystem nach einem der vorhergehenden Ansprüche, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß es Sulfoxid
und phenyliertes Naphthylamin in einem Gewichtsverhältnis von 1:10 bis 1:1 enthält.
5. Antioxidationsmittelsystem nach einem der vorhergehenden Ansprüche, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß es als
Sulfoxidverbindung Diphenylsulfoxid, 4,4'-Dichlordiphenylsulfoxid,
Dibenzothiophenoxid, Phenylmethylsulfoxid, p-Decanoyloxyphenylmethylsulfoxid oder Naphthylmethylsulfoxid
enthält.
6. Antioxidationsmittelsystem nach einem der vorhergehenden Ansprüche, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß es eine
oligodynamische Menge von Kupfer enthält.
7. Antioxidationsmittelsystem nach Anspruch 6, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß es 15 χ 10 bis 30 χ 10^ Gewichtsteile
des phenylierten Naphthylamins und bis zu etwa 25 Gewichtsteile Kupfer enthält.
8. Antioxidationsmittelsystem nach Anspruch 7, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß es 0,01 Gewichtsteile bis 5
Gewichtsteile Kupfer enthält.

9. Antioxidationsmittelsystem nach einem der vorhergehenden
Ansprüche, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß es als phenyliertes Naphthylamin Phenyl-Cfr-naphthylamin und als
Sulfoxidverbindung Diphenylsulfoxid enthält.
10. Verwendung eines Antioxidationsmittelsystems nach einem der vorhergehenden Ansprüche zur Stabilisierung
eines Öls gegenüber dem oxidativen Abbau, wobei das Öl aus zumindest einem Vertreter von (1) zumindest einem synthetisehen
Kohlenwasserstofföl, das aus (^-Olefinen mit 3 bis
14 C-Atomen hergestellt worden ist, ein durchschnittliches Molekulargewicht zwischen etwa 280 und 2000 hat und weniger
als etwa 0,25 mol ungesättigte Bindungen pro 1000 g des Öls
enthält, (2) zumindest einem Mineralöl auf Kohlenwasserstoff-Basis,
das im wesentlichen säurefrei ist und weniger als 0,15 mol ungesättigte Bindungen pro 1000 g des Öls enthält,
und (3) einem Esteröl ausgewählt wird.
11. öl, stabilisiert durch Verwendung eines Anti-Oxidationsmittelsystems
nach Anspruch 10.
12. Stabilisiertes Öl nach Anspruch 11, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß es sich um ein synthetisches Kohlenwasserstofföl
handelt.
13. Stabilisiertes öl nach Anspruch 11 oder 12,
dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß es pro 100 Gewichtsteile öl etwa 0,15 Gewichtsteile bis 3,0 Gewichtsteile eines phenylierten
Naphthylamins enthält.
14. Stabilisiertes öl nach einem der Ansprüche 11
bis 13, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß es bis zu etwa 25 ppm Kupfer, bezogen auf das Gewicht des Öls, enthält.
