具体实施方式

依照本发明,附加的白光发射元件可以提供比红色或蓝色元件更大的亮度贡献。众所周知,绿色元件也提供比红色或蓝色元件更大的亮度贡献。因此,通过以空间均匀的方式将附加元件和绿色元件设置在像素内以及整个显示器上,提高了图像质量。

为了优化用于各种应用的显示装置,可以使用不同尺寸的元件。本发明人进行的研究表明,在图像或图形应用中很少发现饱和色。因此,通过使用附加元件代替限定色域的元件,可改善显示器的效率。此外,在典型应用中附加元件的使用可以如此之高,以致为了减小附加元件中的电流密度,增加附加元件的尺寸是有用的。现在使用的典型的OLED材料对于附加元件和绿色元件具有相对较高的效率,而对于红色和蓝色元件具有相对较低的效率。因此,依照本发明的优化显示器可以具有相对较大的红色、蓝色和附加元件,以及相对较小的绿色元件。例如,在黑色和白色使用占优势的应用中,附加的白色OLED元件将比任何的色域限定元件更加频繁被使用,因此可以增加尺寸来减小电流密度,并由此减少该附加元件的老化。基于文本和图形的应用一般是这种类型。
图6中示出了上述这种排列的例子,其中绿光发射元件32与附加元件36相比相对较小,而红色和蓝色元件30和34与附加元件相比相对较大。在典型应用中,红色和蓝色元件30和34是最大的以补偿它们的相对较低的效率,而附加元件36比绿色元件32大,以适应不饱和色的较大用量。可以调整附加元件相对于红色和蓝色元件的相对尺寸,以补偿它们的相对效率和预期使用。

Claims (36)

1.一种彩色显示器,包括:
a)发光像素阵列,每个像素具有用于发射不同颜色的光的多个彩色光发射元件和用于发射白光的至少一个附加发光元件,其中该附加发光元件的功率效率比至少一个彩色光发射元件的功率效率高;
b)用于产生亮度控制信号的装置;和
c)响应于亮度控制信号和彩色显示信号来产生用于驱动白光发射元件的白色显示信号的装置。
2.根据权利要求1所述的彩色显示器,其中用于产生亮度控制信号的装置包括设置用来感测环境亮度的光敏器件。
3.根据权利要求1所述的彩色显示器,其中用于产生亮度控制信号的装置包括操作员控制的输入装置。
4.根据权利要求1所述的显示器,其中用于产生白色显示信号的装置包括一个或多个查找表。
5.根据权利要求1所述的显示器,其中彩色光发射元件产生红色、绿色、和蓝色光。
6.根据权利要求1所述的显示器,其中附加的白光发射元件比任何彩色光发射元件都大。
7.根据权利要求1所述的显示器,其中每个像素包括三个彩色光发射元件和一个白光发射元件。
8.根据权利要求7所述的显示器,其中发光元件形成条形或二乘二的矩阵图案。
9.根据权利要求2所述的显示器,其中光敏器件和发光元件形成在公共基板上。
10.根据权利要求9所述的显示器,其中用于产生白色显示信号的装置也形成在该公共基板上。
11.根据权利要求1所述的显示器,其中该显示器是项部发射的OLED装置。
12.根据权利要求1所述的显示器,其中该显示器是底部发射的OLED装置。
13.根据权利要求1所述的显示器,其中该显示器是有源矩阵装置。
14.根据权利要求1所述的显示器,其中该显示器是无源矩阵装置。
15.根据权利要求1所述的显示器,其中该显示装置是LCD显示装置。
16.根据权利要求1所述的显示器,其中发光元件具有不同的尺寸。
17.根据权利要求1所述的显示器,其中发光元件具有不同的形状。
18.根据权利要求1所述的显示器,其中白光发射元件具有与该显示器的白点相同的白点。
19.一种显示彩色图像的方法,包括:
a)提供发光像素阵列,每个像素具有用于发射不同颜色的光的多个彩色光发射元件和用于发射白光的至少一个附加发光元件,其中该附加发光元件的功率效率比至少一个彩色光发射元件的功率效率高;
b)产生亮度控制信号;
c)响应于亮度控制信号和彩色显示信号产生白色显示信号;以及
d)用白色显示信号驱动白光发射元件,并且用彩色显示信号驱动彩色光发射元件。
20.根据权利要求19所述的方法,其中产生亮度控制信号的步骤包括使用光敏器件来感测环境亮度。
21.根据权利要求19所述的方法,其中用于产生亮度控制信号的装置包括操作员控制的输入装置。
22.根据权利要求19所述的方法,其中产生白色显示信号的步骤包括使用一个或多个查找表。
23.根据权利要求19所述的方法,其中彩色光发射元件产生红色、绿色、和蓝色光。
24.根据权利要求19所述的方法,其中附加的白光发射元件比任何彩色光发射元件都大。
25.根据权利要求19所述的方法,其中每个像素包括三个彩色光发射元件和一个白光发射元件。
26.根据权利要求25所述的方法,其中发光元件形成条形或二乘二的矩阵图案。
27.根据权利要求20所述的方法,其中光敏器件和发光元件形成在公共基板上。
28.根据权利要求27所述的方法,其中产生白色显示信号的步骤使用也形成在该公共基板上的电路。
29.根据权利要求19所述的方法,其中所述显示器是顶部发射的OLED装置。
30.根据权利要求19所述的方法,其中所述显示器是底部发射的OLED装置。
31.根据权利要求19所述的方法,其中所述显示器是有源矩阵装置。
32.根据权利要求19所述的方法,其中所述显示器是无源矩阵装置。
33.根据权利要求19所述的方法,其中该显示装置是LCD显示装置。
34.根据权利要求19所述的方法,其中发光元件具有不同的尺寸。
35.根据权利要求19所述的方法,其中发光元件具有不同的形状。
36.根据权利要求19所述的方法,其中白光发射元件具有与该显示器的白点相同的白点。
