Abstract

无线通信正在迅速成长,不断增加高速移动数据通信的需求。作为一例,所谓的“无线保真”或“无线网络”系统和无线局域网络(WLAN)部署在多种不同类型的地区(如咖啡店、机场、图书馆等)。无线通信系统与称为“客户端”的无线装置通信,所述无线装置必须常驻在无线范围或“蜂窝式覆盖区域”内,以与接入点装置通信。
一种部署无线通信系统的方法包括使用“微微蜂窝”。微微蜂窝是射频(RF)覆盖区域。举例来说,微微蜂窝的半径范围可从几米到二十米。结合数个接入点装置建立覆盖称为“微微蜂窝式覆盖区域”的微微蜂窝式数组。由于微微蜂窝式覆盖小区域,每个微微蜂窝通常只有几个使用者(客户端)。这样就可以同时提供无线系统使用者高覆盖品质及高数据传输速率,并最小化无线系统使用者共享的RF带宽。微微蜂窝的一个优势是能够与在微微蜂窝式覆盖区域内、位于远程的通信装置无线通信。

有线和无线的同级点模拟和数字通信一般是分别对于范围和覆盖有所限级。加强有线同级点连接的范围可能需要复杂的放大及/或重复请求。扩大无线同级点连接的覆盖通常需要较密集的天线布署及/或传输功率的增加,这可能会被政府法规、无线标准、电池峰值功率和储能考虑所限制。此外,扩大覆盖区域可能会由于使用专属协议(如医疗装置)而被禁止。
发明内容
本文揭示的实施例包括光转换的光纤有线及/或无线通信系统和增加有线及/或无线同级点通信系统的范围的相关方法。在一实施例中,光转换光纤有线及/或无线通信系统可能包括具有光转换触排的头端单元(HEU)。多个光纤电缆,所述光纤电缆的每个包括至少一光纤且配置以将无线电光纤(RoF)信号从所述头端单元传递到多个远程接入点。所述远程接入点的第一接入点经配置以形成第一同级装置所位于的相应的第一蜂窝式覆盖区域。所述远程接入点的第二接入点经配置以形成第二同级装置所位于的相应的第二、不同的蜂窝式覆盖区域。所述光转换触排经配置以通过所述光纤电缆的至少一个动态建立基于RoF的光链接,以使所述第一覆盖区域中的所述第一同级装置至少部分通过所述基于RoF的光链接与所述第二覆盖区域中的所述第二同级装置通信。

本文揭示的光转换的光纤有线/无线通信系统和方法利用无线局域网络(如WLAN)来开始同级点转换,因为转换只需要非常低的数据传输速率连接。可以支持多种输入选项,如射频(RF)电缆/天线输入、光纤输入及电力输入。可以使用多种输出选项,包括射频电缆/天线输出、具光/电转换的光纤输出、具E/O转换旁路的光纤输出以及电力输出。光转换的光纤有线/无线通信系统可升级到更高的频率,例如60GHz。

在一实施例中,系统10采用已知的电信波长,如850nm、1300nm或1550nm。在另一范例实施例中,系统10利用其它不太常见但适当的波长,如980nm。
系统10的范例实施例包括单模光纤或多模光纤用于下行和上行链路光纤136D及136U。光纤的特定类型取决于系统10的应用。对于许多建筑内的部署应用,最大传输距离一般不超过300米。当考虑使用多模光纤于下行和上行链路光纤136D及136U时,需要考虑所欲射频光纤传输的最大长度。例如,已知1400MHz/km多模光纤带宽产品已足够用于高达300m的5.2GHz的传输。
在一实施例中,50μm的多模光纤是用于下行和上行链路光纤136D及136U,E/O转换器60使用指定用于10Gb/s数据传输的VCSEL在850nm运作。在一更具体的范例实施例中,OM3 50μm多模光纤是用于下行和上行链路光纤136D及136U。
系统10还包括电源供应160,电源供应160产生电功率信号162。电源供应160电耦合至HEU 20,用于供电其中的功率消耗元件。在一实施例中,电线168穿过HEU 20至远程单元30以供电给在转换器对66中的E/O转换器60和O/E转换器62,可选的射频信号指示元件106(除非可选的射频信号指示元件106是诸如循环器的被动装置),以及任何其它耗电元件(未图示)。范例实施例中,电线168包括线路170和172,线路170和172承载单一电压且电耦合到在远程单元30的直流电源转换器180。直流电源转换器180电耦合到在远程单元30的E/O转换器60和O/E转换器62,并改变电力信号162的电压或电平为在远程单元30的耗电组件所要求的功率电平。在一实施例,取决于电线168所传递的电力信号162的类型,直流电源转换器180是DC/DC电源转换器或AC/DC电源转换器。范例实施例中,电线168包括标准的电力传递电线,如用于标准电信和其它应用的18-2AWG(美国线规)。在另一范例实施例中,电线168(图3虚线所示)从电源160直接到远程单元30,而不是从或通过HEU 20。在另一范例实施例中,电线168包括两个以上的电线并载有多个电压。

参考图1和图3的基于光纤的无线微微蜂窝式系统,服务单元50产生对应特定应用的电子下行射频服务信号SD(电子信号SD)。在一实施例中,这是通过数字信号处理器72来达成,数字信号处理器72提供调制到射频载波以产生所欲电子信号SD的电子信号(未图示)给调制器/解调器单元70。电子信号SD是由E/O转换器60所接收,E/O转换器60转换电子信号SD成相应的光学下行链路射频信号SD’(光学信号SD’),然后将所述光学下行链路射频信号SD’耦合到在输入端138的下行链路光纤136D。应注意,在一实施例中,光信号SD’具有给定的调制索引。此外,在范例实施例中,控制E/O转换器60的调制电源(例如通过一或多个增益控制放大器(未图示))以变化来自天线系统100的发射功率。在范例实施例中,变化提供给天线系统100的电量,以定义相关微微蜂窝式40的大小,在范例实施例中,相关微微蜂窝式40的大小范围从约一米到约二十米。
光信号SD’经过下行链路光纤136D到输出端140,在此由远程单元30中的O/E转换器62所接收。O/E转换器62将光信号SD’转换回电信号SD,然后电信号SD会传播到射频信号指示元件106。射频信号指示元件106指示电信号SD到天线系统100。电信号SD会反馈到天线系统100,使天线系统100发射相应的电磁下行链路射频信号SD”(电磁信号SD”)。
当装置45是位于微微蜂窝40内时,由天线46接收电磁信号SD”。天线46将电磁信号SD”转换成装置45中的电子信号SD,并处理电子信号SD。装置45可产生电子上行链路射频信号SU,所述电子上行链路射频信号SU被天线46转换成电磁上行射频信号SU”(电磁信号SU”)。

接入点208和210通过光纤电缆中的光纤而光耦合到HEU 20(以接入点208和210与HEU 20之间的实线代表)。在一实施例中,光纤可以类似于图2及/或3所示的方式而将接入点208和210连接至HEU 20。图4表示使用不同于同级装置202的装置200(如PDA或移动电话)来请求同级点交换。装置200发送同级点请求到WLAN接入点206(如虚线所示)。WLAN接入点206通过光纤电缆中的光纤而光耦合到HEU 20(以WLAN接入点206与HEU 20之间的实线代表),使得同级点请求从WLAN接入点206发送至HEU 20。
当HEU 20接收同级点请求时,光转换触排212动态选择合适的光纤以连接接入点208和210,以使与接入点208和210相关的同级装置202和204可与对方通信。一旦光转换触排212动态选择合适的光纤以连接接入点208和210,同级装置202可使用同级装置202和接入点208可使用的任何协议而与接入点208无线连接,同级装置204可使用同级装置204和接入点210可使用的任何协议而与接入点210无线连接。在这种方式下,通过建立两个不同蜂窝的接入点208和210之间的动态光链接的光转换触排212,使用不同的无线协议,可使不同蜂窝中的同级装置202和204之间的同级点能够通信。
此情境可用于医疗应用,如医院或其它医疗机构,使用PDA的医生可要求将储存在远程专属装置上的高分辨率影像(X光、MRI等)显示于床头基于专属协议的监视器。例如,同级装置202可具有储存有X射线数据的计算机于医院的记录区域。通过使用图4所示的系统,来自同级装置202的数据可传送到同级装置204,同级装置204可为病房内的计算机终端或其它监视器或显示器,且是在与同级装置202所处的记录室的不同楼层。
图5表示使用光转换光纤有线/无线通信系统的范例实施例的示意图,以允许根据一范例实施例在同级点装置之间的视频会议。图5中,同级装置302是位于与同级装置304的不同蜂窝中。当同级装置302是在接入点308所定义的第一蜂窝中时,同级装置302可通过无线连接(由虚线表示)与同级点308通信。当同级装置304是在接入点310所定义的第二蜂窝中时,同级装置304可通过无线连接(由虚线表示)与接入点点310通信。接入点308和310可能是宽带接入点或宽带转发器。在一实施例中,接入点308和310可能类似于图3所述的远程单元30,其中远程单元30包括转换器对66,其中E/O转换器60和O/E转换器62是通过诸如循环器的射频信号指示元件106而电耦合到天线系统100。
接入点308和310是通过在光纤电缆中的光纤(以接入点308和310与HEU 20之间的实线代表)光耦合到HEU 20。在一实施例中,光纤可以类似于图2及/或图3所示的方式将接入点308和310连接至HEU 20。图5所示的范例系统与图4所示的范例系统类似。图5与图4所示的情境的不同之处在同级装置302或304的一个发起连接,而非请求不同的装置(如PDA)。这适用于同级装置302和304都具有无线局域网络接入和宽带无线(可能是专属协议)网络且想要参与视频会议的情况下。因此,在一实施例中,同级装置302和304可为计算装置(如笔记型计算机),接入点308和310可为宽带接入点,接入点306和314可为无线局域网络接入点。例如,图5的实施例可以通过允许笔记型计算机将同级点连接的请求置于低数据速率的网络而利用对于视频应用程序而言为不足的现有低数据速率无线局域网络(如802.11b),并通过基于无线/UWB USB的同级点宽带较高数据速率网络来传输视频信息。因此,在图5中,同级装置302或304之一发起同级点通信的请求。同级装置302发送通信请求到无线局域网络接入点306,或是同级装置304发送通信请求到无线局域网络接入点314(如细虚线所示)。无线局域网络接入点306和314通过在光纤光缆中的光纤而光耦合到HEU 20(以无线局域网络接入点306与HEU 20及无线局域网络接入点314与HEU 20之间的实线表示),使得同级点请求是从无线局域网络接入点306或无线局域网络接入点314发送至HEU 20。
当HEU 20接收同级点请求时,光转换触排312动态选择合适的光纤以连接接入点308和310,使得与接入点308和310相关的同级装置302和304可以互相通信。一旦光转换触排312动态选择合适的光纤以连接接入点308和310,同级装置302可使用同级装置302和接入点308可使用的任何协议而与接入点308无线连接,同级装置304可使用同级装置304和接入点310可使用的任何协议而与接入点310无线连接。在这种方式下,通过建立两个不同蜂窝的接入点308和310之间的动态光链接的光转换触排312,使用不同的无线协议,可使不同蜂窝中的同级装置302和304之间的同级点能够通信。
图6表示使用光转换光纤有线/无线通信系统的范例实施例的示意图,以根据一范例实施例通过共同存在的接入点允许在同级点装置之间的通信。图6中,同级装置402是位于与同级装置404的不同蜂窝中。当同级装置402是在接入点408所定义的第一蜂窝中时,同级装置402可通过无线连接(由左边的细虚线表示)与同级点408通信。当同级装置404是在接入点410所定义的第二蜂窝中时,同级装置404可通过无线连接(由右边的细虚线表示)与同级点410通信。接入点408和410可为共存的接入点。在一实施例中,接入点408和410可能同时有无线局域网络和宽带(如宽带UWB)的能力。接入点408和410是通过在光纤电缆中的光纤(以接入点408和410与HEU 20之间的实线代表)光耦合到HEU 20。在接入点408是共存的接入点的实施例中,过滤器409可用于分开宽带信号(例如2.4兆赫的信号)与无线局域网络信号(如802.11信号),无线局域网络信号可通过光纤电缆从共存接入点408接收。在接入点410是共存接入点的实施例中,过滤器411可用于分开宽带信号(例如2.4兆赫的信号)与无线局域网络信号(如802.11信号),无线局域网络信号可通过光纤电缆从共存接入点410接收。在一实施例中,基于接收自同级装置402和404的信号频率,HEU 20自动决定同级装置402和404之间的通信是可能的。在一实施例中,HEU 20可感测从同级装置402和404接收的信号的无线电频带内容,其中一个同级装置位于一个蜂窝中。通过经由基于RoF的光纤链接,使用光转换触排412以连接具有共同无线电频段的蜂窝,HEU 20可自动决定转换配置。这种自动连接不需要来自同级装置402或404的一个或第三装置的请求。在一实施例中,光纤可以类似于图2及/或图3所示的方式而将接入点408和410连接至HEU 20。图6与图4和图5所示的范例系统类似。图6与图5所示的情境的不同之处在于仅使用具有共存能力的网络来代替两个个别的网络,且可从WLAN信号过滤出宽带信号。例如,图5所示的视频会议应用范例也适用于图6。
当HEU 20通过接入点408或410自同级装置402或404接收同级点请求时,转换触排412动态选择合适的光纤以连接接入点408和410,以使与接入点408和410相关的同级装置402和404可以互相通信。一旦转换触排412动态选择合适的光纤以连接接入点408和410,同级装置402可独立于协议而与接入点408无线通信。在这种方式下,在不同蜂窝中使用不同无线协议的同级装置402与404之间的同级通信是通过转换触排412而得以进行,其中转换触排412建立两个不同蜂窝的接入点408与410之间的动态光链接。
图7表示在光转换光纤有线/无线通信系统的HEU处的光转换触排的范例实施例的示意图。在图7中,光纤电缆702-1到702-n及704-1到704-n将HEU 20光耦合至N个同级装置的接入点。例如,光纤电缆702-1将HEU20光耦合至同级装置1的接入点,光纤电缆704-n将HEU 20光耦合至同级装置N的接入点。在一实施例,光纤电缆702-1到702-n及704-1到704-n的每个具有传输光纤和接收光纤。例如,光纤电缆702-1具有光传输光纤702t和光接收光纤702r,光纤电缆704-n具有光传输光纤704t和光接收光纤704r。因此,图7说明当同级装置1请求与同级装置N通信时是如何在HEU 20处接收请求,通过将与同级装置1相关的光传输光纤702t和光接收光纤702r耦合至与同级装置N相关的光接收光纤704r和光传输光纤704t,光转换触排712将动态链接同级装置1与同级装置N所位于的两个蜂窝。在一实施例中,HEU 20可包括光放大器706。在一实施例中,当期望能够使大于300米的同级装置之间能够通信时,可加入光放大器706。
图8表示使用光学放大及在光转换光纤有线/无线通信系统的HEU处分开以用于广播视频至同级点装置的范例实施例的示意图。在图8中,传入光纤电缆802将提供视频源(未图示)的装置耦合至HEU 20。在一实施例中,光纤电缆802可包括光传输光纤802t和光接收光纤802r。图8的HEU20包括视频广播单元806,视频广播单元806将自光传输光纤802t传入的视频分开为多个传出光纤电缆804-1至804-n,多个传出光纤电缆804-1至804-n的每个可光耦合到同级装置。每个光纤电缆804-1至804-n具有传送和接收光纤。例如,光纤电缆804-1具有光传输光纤804-1t及光接收光纤804-1r,光纤电缆804-n具有光传输光纤804-nt和光接收光纤804nr。因此,图8说明光耦合到视频源的HEU 20可经由光纤播放视频(如高清晰度(HD)电视(HDTV)、视频会议等)到不同位置的多个同级装置。在一实施例中,视频广播单元806也可提供视频信号的放大。注意到,在图8某些视频广播的实施例中,并不是需要使用所有的光传输和接收光纤。例如,在使用图8的实施例广播视频信号时,不一定要使用光纤电缆802的光传输光纤802t以及光传输光纤804-lt至804-nt。
图9表示光转换光纤有线/无线通信系统的范例实施例的示意图,图9表示在两个不同位置的HEU与宽带转发器之间的范例连接。在图9,HEU 20光耦合到可能在不同的蜂窝式覆盖区域的宽带转发器906和914。宽带转发器906和914的每个通过光纤电缆900而光耦合到HEU 20,光纤电缆900具有电源线902和一或多个光纤904。宽带转发器906具有射频输入/输出908,在一实施例中,射频输入/输出908可为射频天线、DC输入/输出910和光纤输入/输出912。宽带转发器914具有射频输入/输出916,在一实施例中,射频输入/输出916可为射频天线、DC输入/输出918和光纤输入/输出920。
图10表示宽带转发器的范例实施例的示意图,宽带转发器可用于光转换光纤有线/无线通信系统的范例实施例中。图10表示图9宽带转发器914的具有更多内部细节的实施例。图9的宽带转发器906可能类似于宽带转发器914。具有电线902和光纤904的光纤电缆900将宽带转发器914光耦合至HEU 20(如图9所示)。宽带转发器914可以具有射频输入/输出916In和916Out,在一实施例中,射频输入/输出916In和916Out可为射频天线、DC输入/输出918和光纤输入/输出920In和920Out。在一实施例中,宽带转发器914可能还包括激光二极管922、光探测器924、转换阻抗放大器926。在一实施例中,光转换器905和907使在射频输入/输出916In和916Out与光纤输入/输出920In和920Out之间选择。

因此,通过使用光转换RoF有线/无线通信系统,可增加同级点通信系统的通信覆盖范围。通过使用HEU中的光转换触排以设立两个不同蜂窝中的转发器之间的动态链接,两个不同蜂窝中的装置可以经由HEU通过光纤互相通信。通过结合光纤低损耗、高带宽的特性与适当的光转换网络,此系统克服传统有线/无线同级点通信的局限,以提高覆盖区域(在需要之处)。通过利用光转换光纤有线/无线通信系统的光纤电缆结构(如RoF WLAN微微蜂窝式系统),同级点通信范围当延长至蜂窝与蜂窝之间。这意味着在任何两个蜂窝中的装置可独立于各自的实体距离而在同级点模式进行通信,使得同级点范围扩展到整个室内安装区域。此外,光转换光纤有线/无线通信系统使用近乎透明于无线协议的光缆链接,因此不需要专属协议规范要求。
此外,本文使用的术语“光纤电缆”及/或“光纤”包括所有类型的单一模式及多模式光波导,包括一或多个光纤,光纤在电缆中可为无镀膜、有色、缓冲、带状及/或具有其它组织或保护结构,如一或多个管、强度构件、护套或类似物。类似地,其它类型的合适光纤包括弯曲不敏感光纤或任何其它适宜用于传输光信号的媒体。弯曲不敏感光纤的一例是康宁公司市售的的多模光纤。
Claims (19)
1.一种基于光纤的无线通信系统,包括:
头端单元HEU,具有光转换触排;及
多个光纤电缆,其中所述多个光纤电缆的每个包括至少一光纤且每个光纤电缆经配置以将无线电光纤RoF信号从所述头端单元HEU传递到多个远程接入点,其中所述多个远程接入点的第一接入点经配置以形成相应的第一覆盖区域,所述多个远程接入点的第二接入点经配置以形成相应的不同的第二覆盖区域,
其中所述光转换触排经配置以通过所述多个光纤电缆的至少一个动态建立基于无线电光纤RoF的光链接,以使所述相应的第一覆盖区域中的第一同级装置至少部分通过所述基于无线电光纤RoF的光链接与所述相应的不同的第二覆盖区域中的第二同级装置通信;
其中所述头端单元HEU还配置以从所述第一和第二同级装置的第一装置接收请求,以通过与所述第一和第二同级装置的至少一个相关的至少一无线局域网络WLAN接入点而与所述第一和第二同级装置的第二装置进行通信。
2.如权利要求1所述的基于光纤的无线通信系统,其中所述多个远程接入点的所述第一接入点经配置以与所述第一同级装置无线通信;及
所述多个远程接入点的所述第二接入点经配置以与所述第二同级装置无线通信。

4.如权利要求1所述的基于光纤的无线通信系统,其中当在所述HEU接收的来自所述相应的第一覆盖区域中的所述第一同级装置的信号与接收自所述相应的不同的第二覆盖区域中的所述第二同级装置的信号具有共同的射频时,所述HEU还配置以自动建立所述第一覆盖区域与所述第二覆盖区域之间的所述基于RoF的光链接。
5.如权利要求1所述的基于光纤的无线通信系统,其中所述HEU通过包括至少一光纤的光纤电缆而光耦合到所述至少一无线局域网络接入点。

9.如权利要求1所述的基于光纤的无线通信系统,其中所述多个远程接入点的所述第一接入点经配置以与所述第一同级装置无线通信,所述第一同级装置使用不同于所述多个远程接入点的所述第二接入点所使用的协议的无线通信协议以与所述第二同级装置无线通信。
10.如权利要求9所述的基于光纤的无线通信系统,其中由所述多个远程接入点的所述第一或第二接入点所使用以与所述第一或第二同级装置进行无线通信的至少一无线通信协议是专属无线通信协议。
11.如权利要求1所述的基于光纤的无线通信系统,其中所述HEU还包括视频广播单元,所述视频广播单元经配置以通过包括至少一光纤的多个光纤电缆将在所述HEU处所接收的视频信号分散至多个装置。
12.如权利要求1所述的基于光纤的无线通信系统,其中所述多个远程接入点的至少一个还包括射频RF输入/输出、DC输入/输出以及光学输入/输出的至少一个。
13.一种使在第一覆盖区域中的第一同级装置与在不同的第二覆盖区域中的第二同级装置之间能够通信的方法,所述方法包括以下步骤:
通过多个光纤电缆,将多个远程接入点光连接至头端单元HEU,所述多个光纤电缆的每个包括至少一光纤并且每个光纤电缆经配置以从所述头端单元HEU传递无线电光纤RoF信号至多个远程接入点;
形成与所述多个远程接入点的第一接入点相关的第一覆盖区域;
形成与所述多个远程接入点的第二接入点相关但不同于所述第一覆盖区域的第二覆盖区域;

14.如权利要求13所述的方法,所述方法还包括以下步骤:所述多个远程接入点的所述第一接入点与所述第一同级装置进行无线通信,及所述多个远程接入点的所述第二接入点与所述第二同级装置进行无线通信。
15.如权利要求13或14所述的方法,所述方法包括以下步骤:从所述第一和第二同级装置的一个接收请求,以建立所述第一同级装置与所述第二同级装置间的通信。
16.如权利要求13所述的方法,所述方法还包括以下步骤:
感测自所述第一覆盖区域中的所述第一同级装置接收的至少一信号的射频及自所述第二覆盖区域中的所述第二同级装置接收的至少一信号的射频;及
当自所述第一覆盖区域中的所述第一同级装置接收的至少一信号的所述射频与自所述第二覆盖区域中的所述第二同级装置接收的至少一信号的所述射频是共同的射频时,自动建立所述第一覆盖区域与所述第二覆盖区域之间的所述基于RoF的光链接。
17.如权利要求13所述的方法,所述方法还包括以下步骤:在通过包括至少一光纤的光纤电缆而光耦合到所述HEU的无线局域网络WLAN接入点接收请求,以建立所述第一同级装置与所述第二同级装置之间的通信。
18.一种在基于光纤的无线通信系统中的头端单元HEU,包括:
光转换触排;及
多个端口,经配置以接收多个光纤电缆,所述多个光纤电缆的每个包括至少一光纤且每个光纤电缆经配置以将无线电光纤RoF信号从所述头端单元HEU传递到多个远程接入点,其中所述多个远程接入点的第一接入点经配置以形成第一同级装置所位于的相应的第一蜂窝式覆盖区域,所述多个远程接入点的第二接入点经配置以形成第二同级装置所位于的相应的不同的第二蜂窝式覆盖区域,
其中所述光转换触排经配置以响应于接收来自除了所述第一同级装置与所述第二同级装置之外的装置的同级点通信的请求而通过所述多个光纤电缆的至少一个动态建立在所述第一同级装置和所述第二同级装置之间基于无线电光纤RoF的光链接,
其中所述第一同级装置至少部分通过所述基于无线电光纤RoF的光链接与所述第二同级装置通信。
19.如权利要求18所述的HEU,还包括处理器,所述处理器经配置以处理所述来自除了所述第一同级装置与所述第二同级装置之外的装置的同级点通信的请求,其中所述光转换触排还包括至少一光放大器。
