在所述给定期间内,在所述第二开关变为第一状态的期间,把用于将栅电位设定为如下电位的信号作为用于设定栅电位的所述信号而提供的电路,上述电位是指流过了使所述元件变为低电平的驱动状态的所述驱动电流的电位。

一种用于驱动元件的驱动装置,包括:
为了驱动多个元件而配置为矩阵状的多个驱动电路,每个所述驱动电路分别具有使驱动电路流向所述元件的驱动晶体管、设置在所述元件和所述驱动晶体管之间的所述驱动电流的电流路径上并且控制所述驱动电流的流动的开关;
分别与配置为矩阵状的所述多个驱动电路的一部分连接的多条布线;以及
通过所述多条布线同时向配置为矩阵状的多个驱动电路的各个所述开关提供用于把所述开关控制为抑制所述驱动电流的流动的状态的信号的电路。
在该驱动装置中,具有分别与配置为矩阵状的所述多个驱动电路的一部分连接的多条数据线;
在所选择的所述驱动电路中,在按照从所述数据线供给的调制信号而设定所述驱动晶体管的栅电位的期间内,所述多条布线兼用作向所选择的所述驱动电路供给控制信号的布线,所述控制信号使所述驱动电流在所述驱动晶体管和所述元件间的电流路径上的流动变为受抑制的状态。
即所述多条布线能作为连接配置为矩阵状的多个驱动电路的扫描线使用。即在某时刻(具体而言,电源起动时),使用扫描线对配置为矩阵状的多个驱动电路同时发送抑制驱动晶体管和元件间的电路路线中的驱动电流的流动的信号。而在显示时等通常的扫描驱动时,从多个扫描线扫描选择1到多条扫描线,在连接在选择的扫描线上的各驱动电路中进行来自数据线的信号的写入。在写入动作时,由正在写入的驱动电路驱动的元件希望处于非驱动状态,所以在写入时适合变为抑制流向驱动晶体管和元件间的电流路线的驱动电流的状态。这时,在连接在未选择的扫描线上的驱动电路中,执行元件的驱动,即驱动电流流向驱动晶体管和元件间的电流路线。因此,在通常的扫描驱动时,对于进行数据的写入(设定驱动晶体管的栅电位)的驱动电路,提供有选择地抑制驱动晶体管和元件间的电流路线中的驱动电流的流动的控制信号。在以下所示的实施例中,在抑制驱动电流流过驱动晶体管和元件间的电流路线的信号通过所述多条布线同时提供给配置为矩阵状的多个驱动电路时、在通常的扫描驱动时扫描供给时,通过使用相同的布线,能实现简单的布线结构。

一种用于驱动元件的驱动装置,包括:
为了驱动多个元件而配置为矩阵状的多个驱动电路,每个所述驱动电路分别具有使驱动电路流向所述元件的驱动晶体管、切换第一状态和第二状态的开关,其中在所述第一状态下,将所述驱动晶体管的栅电位设定为使所述驱动晶体管流过给定的所述驱动电流的电位,而在所述第二状态下,保持所设定的所述栅电位;
分别与配置为矩阵状的所述多个驱动电路的一部分连接的多条布线;以及
通过所述多条布线同时向配置为矩阵状的多个驱动电路的各个所述开关提供用于把所述开关控制为所述第一状态的信号的电路。
在该驱动装置中,还具有:分别与配置为矩阵状的多个驱动电路的一部分连接的多条数据线;以及
在把所述信号通过所述多条布线同时提供给配置为矩阵状的多个驱动电路的各个所述开关时,切断从所述多条数据线向所述多个驱动电路供给调制信号的供给路径的电路。

须指出的是,在本申请中,配置为矩阵状的显示元件、或驱动电路并不局限于在多个彼此平行的直线上以及与它正交的多个直线上严密排列各驱动电路的结构,是指能进行矩阵驱动(对每一部分选择选择对象,对选择的元件或驱动电路供给对应的调制信号的驱动)的配置状态。即多个驱动电路可以在逻辑上构成矩阵,作为物理的配置状态,也能采用三角配置等不在多个彼此平行的直线上以及与它正交的多个直线上严密排列各驱动电路的结构。
此外,本申请包含显示装置的发明,具体而言,作为具有上述的驱动装置和作为显示元件的上述元件的显示装置而构成。须指出的是,作为显示元件,能使用有机EL元件等EL元件、场致发射元件等电子发射元件(把电子发射元件作为显示元件使用时,可以组合使用通过发射的电子发光的荧光体等发光体)。
此外,本申请包含记录装置,具体而言,由在记录媒体上记录图象信息的记录设备、显示基于记录设备上记录的图象信息的图象的上述的显示装置构成记录装置。
具体而言,本申请中记载的显示装置能在数字像机、录影机、移动电话、PDA等便携式信息设备中使用。这些信息设备能在固定内置的半导体存储器或硬盘等记录媒体、可更换的半导体存储器或硬盘等记录媒体中记录图象信息。作为显示基于该图象信息的显示装置,能应用本发明中记载的显示装置。

具体实施方式
下面,表示采用显示元件作为驱动的对象的元件,特别是EL元件的显示装置的具体结构例。
图4表示矩阵驱动的EL显示装置的一例的框图。须指出的是,图4是为了说明本实施例中考虑的课题,表示显示装置的基本结构的图,图1表示本实施例的显示装置的具体例。
图中,1是外部控制电路,2是显示面板,3、8、12是电平变换电路,4是列移位寄存器,5是列控制电路,6是图象显示部,7是行移位寄存器,10是列驱动电路,11是象素电路,14是行驱动电路,15是扫描线,16是数据线。
EL显示装置具有外部控制电路1和显示面板2,显示面板2具有图象显示部6、列驱动电路10、行驱动电路7。在图象显示部6中,把象素电路11配置为多行、多列(在图4中,m行×n列),各行的象素电路11公共连接在扫描线15上,各列的象素电路11公共连接在数据线16上。
在所述结构中,从外部控制电路1向行移位寄存器输入定时信号LK1、时钟信号LK2、开始信号LS,对各扫描线15输入扫描信号P1(r)、P2(r)(r=1~m)。此外,列移位寄存器4根据从外部控制电路1输入的时钟信号k和开始信号sp,对列控制电路5输出采样信号sp(q)(q=1~n),通过采样信号sp(q)的输入,列控制电路5从由外部控制电路1输入的图象信号Video抽出该象素的图象信号,把电流信号i(data)向数据线16输出。
图5表示象素电路11的结构例。图中,51是EL元件,M1~M4是薄膜晶体管(TFT),C1是电容,VDD是电源。象素电路由驱动对象元件即EL元件51、驱动该元件的驱动电路构成。驱动电路由驱动晶体管M1、保持驱动晶体管的栅电位的电容C1、控制驱动晶体管M1和元件51间的电路路线中的驱动电路的流动的开关即晶体管(TFT)M4、切换设定驱动晶体管M1的栅电位的状态和保持设定的栅电位的状态的开关即晶体管(TFT)M2构成。此外,在本实施例中,在驱动电路内也配置当设定驱动晶体管M1的栅电位时,使调制信号流向驱动晶体管M1,在设定栅电位后,使调制信号不输入到驱动晶体管M1中的开关即晶体管(TFT)M3。根据图6的时间表,说明图5的象素电路11的动作。须指出的是,在以下的说明中,分别把晶体管的源极、漏极、栅极记载为/S、/D、/G。
在时刻t0以前,输入到r行的扫描线15中的扫描信号P1(r)是“L”,P2(r)是“H”。因此,M2和M3都断开,M4导通,通过由保持在电容C1以及M1的栅电容中的充电电压确定的M1/G电压,电流注入EL元件51中,该EL元件51发光。在时刻t0,如果该r行的扫描信号P1(r)变为“H”,P2(r)变为“L”,并且确定第r行的电流信号i(r)。M2、M3都导通,M4断开,所以对该象素的EL元件51的电流注入停止,该EL元件51熄灭。同时通过M3对M1、M2供给电流信号i(r),所以据此,设定M1/G电压,把电容C1以及M1的栅电容充电。在电流信号i(r)确定的时刻t1,P2(r)再变为“H”,M2变为断开,M1/G电压的设定动作结束,转移到电流信号i(m)的保持动作。在时刻t2,P1(r)变化为“L”,停止对M1的电流信号i(data)的供给,并且M4导通,由M1/G电压设定的M1的漏极电流注入EL元件51,按照电流信号i(r)的电平发光。
图7表示图4的象素电路11的其他结构例。图中,M5是TFT,其他符号表示与图4、图5相同的构件。根据图6的时间表,说明图5的象素电路的动作。
在时刻t0以前,r行的扫描信号P1(r)是“L”,P2(r)是“H”,所以M3、M4都断开,M5导通,通过由保持在电容C1以及M1、M2的栅电容中的充电电压确定的M1/G电压,电流注入EL元件51中,对应于此,该EL元件51发光。在时刻t0,P1(r)变为“H”,P2(r)变为“L”,并且确定第r行的电流信号i(r)。据此,M3、M4都导通,M5断开,电流信号i(r)通过M4提供给M2,按照它,设定M2/G电压,把电容C1以及M2、M2的栅电容充电,停止对EL元件51的电流注入。在电流信号i(r)确定的时刻t1,P2(r)变为“H”,M3变为断开,M1/G电压的设定动作结束,转移到保持动作。在时刻t2,P1(r)变为“L”,停止对M2供给电流信号i(data),但是原样保持由电流信号i(r)设定的M1/G电压、M2/G电压,M5导通,由M1/G电压设定的漏极电流注入EL元件51,按照电流信号i(r)的电平发光。
图8是为了说明本实施例中考虑的问题而表示的移位寄存器7的结构例,本实施例的移位寄存器7实际上按如2那样构成。图8中,LK2b是时钟信号LK2的极性反转的差动信号。图9表示该行移位寄存器7的时间表。
在图8的行移位寄存器7中输入定时信号LK1、时钟信号LK2和开始信号LS,通过基于定时倒相器结构的双稳态多谐振荡器的寄存器结构,依次生成控制信号,由栅极电路生成象素电路动作所必要的定时,把扫描信号P1(r)、P2(r)对各扫描线15输出。
图10表示图4的列移位寄存器的结构例。图中,Kb是时钟信号K的极性反转的差动信号。图11表示该列移位寄存器4的时间表。
在图10的列移位寄存器4中输入时钟信号K和开始信号SP,通过基于定时倒相器结构的双稳态多谐振荡器的移位寄存器结构,生成控制信号,由栅极电路生成象素电路动作所必要的定时,把采样信号sp(q)向各数据线16输出。
如果采用图4、图8所示的基本结构,则在所述EL显示装置中,在该装置的电源起动时控制象素电路的动作的扫描信号P1(r)、P2(r)不稳定时,例如在图5、图7的象素电路11中,如果在电源起动时,P1(r)为”L”,P2(r)为“L”,则变为对EL元件51供给电流的状态。这时由于用于确定象素电路11的EL驱动电流的M1的栅源电压在电源起动时未设定,所以是不定的,无法控制流向EL元件51的电流,所以有可能对EL元件51供给过大的电流,从而造成破坏。
此外,在接通电源的状态下,在不显示图象的待机状态下,在图5、图7的电路中,由电容C1以及M1/G保持的电压是不对EL元件51供给电流的电平时,由于泄漏电流,经过长时间后,变为能向EL元件51供给过大电流的电平,有可能破坏EL元件51。
为了解决这些问题,在本实施例中采用以下的结构。
具体而言,当使电源导通时,为了能实现稳定的动作,进行控制,抑制流向驱动晶体管和元件间的电流路线的驱动电流,并且当使电源导通时,在输入信号不输入的状态下设定驱动晶体管的栅电位。
图1表示本发明的EL显示装置的实施例的框图。图中,9是电平变换电路,13是开关电路,与图4相同的符号表示相同的构件。在本实施例中,使用刚才说明的图5或图7的电路。
在本发明中,其特征在于:从外部控制电路1把开关控制信号EN输入行移位寄存器7,按照该开关控制信号EN的极性,控制从行移位寄存器7向扫描线15输入的扫描信号P1(r)、P2(r)。
具体而言,在象素电路11的动作中,图6的时间表的t0~t2的期间是把电流信号i(data)作为保持电压进行保持的第一期间,t2到下一t0的期间是对EL元件51供给与该保持电压相应的电流,使该EL元件51发光的第二期间。在电源起动时或待机状态等想防止EL元件51的破坏的期间中,通过第一极性的开关控制信号EN,在第一期间中强制地设定被配置为矩阵的全部象素电路11,切断对EL元件51的电流供给,在通常的显示驱动器间中,通过使开关控制信号EN为第二极性,与以往同样,依次在第一期间、第二期间中设定各行的象素电路11,进行i(data)的保持、EL元件51的发光。
图1的装置是具有开关电路13的例子,在该开关电路13中也输入所述开关控制信号EN,按照该开关控制信号EN的极性,控制从列控制电路5向象素电路11的电流信号的传送、切断。该开关电路13例如由n型TFT构成,源极(或漏极)连接在数据线16的列控制电路5一侧,漏极(或源极)连接在数据线15的象素电路11一侧,把开关控制信号EN输入栅极。
图2表示图1的行移位寄存器7的结构例。图中,ENb是EN的极性反转的差动信号,通过使EN的极性反转而在显示面板内部生成。VDD是电源。
图2的电路在图8所示的结构的电路中追加由开关控制信号EN控制的移位寄存器复位用的p型TFT、输入开关控制信号EN、ENb的OR门以及AND门。根据该结构,开关控制信号EN为第一极性、即在本发明中为“L”时,输出为“H”的扫描信号P1(r)、为“L”的P2(r)。
通过图3的时间表说明图2的电路动作。
时刻ts1是开始从用于驱动驱动晶体管等各要素的电源供给电位的时刻。时刻ts2是为了通常的动作而开始驱动元件的时间。时刻t0为解除有效的时刻。时刻t0以前为有效期间。在时刻t0以前的期间,对行移位寄存器7输入开关控制信号EN=L,对全部扫描线15输出“H”的扫描信号P1(r)、“L”的P2(r)。因此,在该期间中,在全部象素电路11中,对EL元件51供给电流的TFT(在图5中M4,在图7中M5)变为断开,不对EL元件51供给电流。此外,由于P2(r)为“L”,所以M1变为二极管连接。
此外,对开关电路13也输入开关控制信号EN=L,构成该电路的n型TFT变为断开,切断列控制电路5和象素电路11间的电流。因此,在象素电路11中,即使M1的栅源间电压为能进行电流输出的状态,因为电流供给目标被切断,所以漏极电流把连接在自己的栅极上的电容C1充电,使栅电压上升,直到漏极电流=0或能视为0程度的小值。
此后,使控制信号EN为“H”,使开关电路13为从列控制电路5向象素电路11传送电流信号的状态,即使象素电路11和EL元件51的电流供给路径导通,象素电路11的M1/G的电压也上升到不输出电流的水平,所以不对EL元件51供给电流。
在时刻t0以后,如果进入通常的显示驱动期间,则开关控制信号EN变为“H”,在行移位寄存器中,与图8的行移位寄存器同样工作,对各行的扫描线15依次输入图6的t0~t2的波形。此外,在开关电路13中,利用EN=H的输入而从列控制电路5输出的电流信号向象素电路11传送。据此,图5、图7所示的象素电路11按每行依次进行根据图6的时间表的动作,进行基于电流信号i(data)的M1/G电压的设定、与电流信号i(data)的电平相应的EL元件51的发光。
当使电源断开时,首先使有效信号EN为低电平。然后,停止LS、LK1、LK2。然后,停止从电源供给电位。须指出的是,可以在使有效信号EN为低电平前进行LS、LK1、LK2的停止。
须指出的是,在本实施例中表示由开关电路13切断对元件供给的调制信号的结构,但是可以不设置这样的切断电路,在上述实施例中也能采用在由开关电路13切断信号的期间中,从外部供给所谓黑电平或低灰度等级电平等低水平驱动状态的信号的结构。具体而言,可以使从外部控制电路1提供的视频信号为低电平。须指出的是,这里所说的低电平的驱动状态是指最大驱动电平(如果是进行灰度显示的显示元件,是能实现最大灰度值的驱动等级)的一半以下的驱动电平(含0电平)。
须指出的是,在本实施例中,表示把具有与元件的所需驱动状态对应的电流值的电流信号作为调制信号供给,把驱动晶体管的栅电位设定为与该电流信号对应的电位的结构,但是也能把调制信号作为电压信号即具有与元件的所需驱动状态对应的电位的信号供给。在把电压信号作为设定驱动晶体管的栅电位的信号供给的结构中,如上述实施例中所述,能采用使用开关电路切断信号的结构、外加设定为产生变为低电平的驱动状态的驱动电流的电位的信号的结构等双方。可是,在把电压信号作为设定驱动晶体管的栅电位的信号供给的结构中,能适合采用外加设定为产生变为低电平的驱动状态的驱动电流的电位的信号的结构。
图12表示使用本发明的显示装置的记录装置即数字相机1201的结构。CMOS传感器1202是接收从外部读取的光,并将其变换为电信号的传感器。从CMOS传感器1202输出的信号由信号处理电路1203进行轮廓强调处理。立刻进行显示时,来自信号处理电路1203的信号一度记录到缓存器1204中,然后输出到图1所示的显示装置即显示装置1205中,由显示装置1205进行视觉化显示。而当记录到存储卡中时,从信号处理电路1203向存储卡驱动装置1206输出信号,在插入的存储卡中记录信号。
这里,作为使用本申请的显示装置的记录装置的例子,表示数字相机,但是也能在摄影机、PDA、移动电话等记录装置中应用本申请的显示装置。在这些便携式设备中,为了节约耗电,频繁开关显示装置的电源。因此,在这些便携式设备中,特别是和采用使用本申请的驱动装置。

Claims (15)

1.一种用于驱动包括像素电路的元件的驱动装置,其中所述像素电路包括:
驱动晶体管,使大小与栅极和源极之间的电压相应的电流作为驱动电流流向所述元件;
第一开关,设置在所述元件和所述驱动晶体管间的所述驱动电流的电流路径上、用于控制所述驱动电流的流动;
第二开关,切换设定所述驱动晶体管的栅极与源极之间的电压的第一状态和保持所设定的所述栅极与源极之间的电压的第二状态;
在开始从电源供给用于驱动所述驱动晶体管的电位后、到为了使所述元件进行通常的动作而开始驱动所述元件之前的期间中的给定期间中,向所述第一开关供给用于控制所述驱动电流的流动使之成为受抑制的抑制状态的信号的电路;
在所述给定期间内向所述第二开关供给用于使所述第二开关成为所述第一状态的信号的电路;以及
在所述给定期间内,在所述第一开关控制所述驱动电流的流动使之变为受抑制的抑制状态并且所述第二开关变为第一状态的期间,中断提供给所述像素电路的数据信号的电路。
2.根据权利要求1所述的驱动装置,其中:
具有配置为矩阵状的多个驱动电路,各驱动电路具有所述驱动晶体管和所述第一开关。
3.根据权利要求1所述的驱动装置,其中:
具有配置为矩阵状的多个驱动电路,各驱动电路具有所述驱动晶体管和所述第二开关。
4.根据权利要求1所述的驱动装置,其中:
所述数据信号是电流值与所述元件的所需驱动状态相应的电流信号。
5.根据权利要求1所述的驱动装置,其中:
所述驱动晶体管、所述第一开关、所述第二开关、把所述信号提供给所述第一开关的电路、把所述信号提供给所述第二开关的电路配置在公共的绝缘性衬底上。
6.一种用于驱动元件的驱动装置,包括:
驱动晶体管,使大小与栅极和源极之间的电压相应的电流作为驱动电流流向所述元件;
第一开关,设置在所述元件和所述驱动晶体管间的所述驱动电流的电流路径上、控制所述驱动电流的流动;
第二开关,切换设定所述驱动晶体管的栅极与源极之间的电压的第一状态和保持所设定的所述栅极与源极之间的电压的第二状态;
在开始从电源供给用于驱动所述驱动晶体管的电位后、到为了使所述元件进行通常的动作而开始驱动所述元件之前的期间中的给定期间中,向所述第一开关供给用于控制所述驱动电流的流动使之成为受抑制的抑制状态的信号的电路;
在所述给定期间内,向所述第二开关供给用于使所述第二开关成为所述第一状态的信号的电路;以及
在所述给定期间内,在所述第一开关控制所述驱动电流的流动使之变为受抑制的抑制状态并且所述第二开关变为第一状态的期间,把用于将栅极与源极之间的电压设定为如下电位的信号作为用于设定栅极与源极之间的电压的所述信号而提供的电路,上述电位是指使所述元件变为低电平的驱动状态的所述驱动电流流过的电位。
7.一种用于驱动元件的驱动装置,包括:
为了分别驱动多个元件而配置为矩阵状的多个驱动电路,每个所述驱动电路分别具有使驱动电流流向所述元件的驱动晶体管、设置在所述元件和所述驱动晶体管间的所述驱动电流的电流路径上并用于控制所述驱动电流的流动的第一开关、切换第一状态和第二状态的第二开关,其中在所述第一状态下,将所述驱动晶体管的栅极与源极之间的电压设定为使所述驱动晶体管流过给定的所述驱动电流的电位,而在所述第二状态下,保持所设定的所述栅极与源极之间的电压;
多条布线,其中每条所述布线与配置为矩阵状的所述多个驱动电路的一部分连接;以及
通过所述多条布线同时向配置为矩阵状的多个驱动电路中的所述第一开关和第二开关中的每一个提供用于把所述第一开关控制为抑制所述驱动电流的流动的状态并把所述第二开关控制为所述第一状态的信号的电路;以及
在所述第一开关控制所述驱动电流的流动使之变为受抑制的状态并且所述第二开关变为第一状态的期间,中断提供给像素电路的数据信号的电路。
8.根据权利要求7所述的驱动装置,其中,还具有:
多条数据线,其中每条所述数据线与配置为矩阵状的多个驱动电路的一部分连接;以及
在把所述信号通过所述多条布线同时提供给配置为矩阵状的多个驱动电路的各个所述开关时,切断从所述多条数据线向所述多个驱动电路供给调制信号的供给路径的电路。
9.根据权利要求7所述的驱动装置,其中:
具有多条数据线,其中每条所述数据线与配置为矩阵状的多个驱动电路的一部分连接;
所述多条布线能兼用作扫描线,所述扫描线用于在扫描驱动时,选择按照从所述数据线供给的调制信号而设定所述驱动晶体管的栅极与源极之间的电压的驱动电路。
10.一种显示装置,包括:
如权利要求1所述的驱动装置;以及
由所述驱动电路驱动的所述元件;
其中所述元件是通过供给所述驱动电流而进行显示动作的显示元件。
11.一种显示装置,包括:
如权利要求6所述的驱动装置;以及
由所述驱动电路驱动的所述元件;
其中所述元件是通过供给所述驱动电流而进行显示动作的显示元件。
12.一种显示装置,包括:
如权利要求7所述的驱动装置;以及
