Process for making an optical brightening agent. The subject of the present patent is a process for the production of an optical brightening agent. The process is characterized in that 4-nitro-4'-amino-stilbene-2,2'-disulfonic acid is acylated with a 2-acyloxy-benzoyl halide, the aeyloxy group is saponified to form the hydroxyl group and this is ethylated,
then the nitro group of the stilbene derivative is reduced to the amino group and reacted with cyanuric halide and the halogen atoms of the triazine ring react with ammonia.
The new brightening agent obtained, the 4- [21 ", 4" '- diamino-triazinyl-amino- (6 "')] -4'- (2" -ethoxy-benzoylamino) -stilbene-2,2'-disulfone- acid is a yellowish powder and has a good affinity for cellulose.
Example: 40 parts of 4-nitro-4'-amino-stilbene-2,2'-disulphonic acid are dissolved in 800 parts of water with the addition of 10.6 parts of calc. Dissolved soda and after the addition of 27.2 parts of crystallized sodium acetate at 0 to 5 with a solution of 39.7 parts of 2-acetoxy-benzoyl chloride in 150 parts of benzene for 10 hours vigorously stirred.
The mixture is then neutralized with a 15% soda solution until the mixture reacts neutrally, heated. 80 to 90 and are at this temperature while stirring so much soda until the reaction mixture constantly reacts with phenolphthalein alkaline. The benzene is distilled off on the descending cooler and, after adding 60 parts of common salt, the aqueous suspension is allowed to cool.
The disodium salt of 4-nitro-4'- (2 "-oxybenzoylamino) -stilbene-2,2'-aisulfonic acid isolated by suction forms an orange-yellow, water-soluble powder after drying.
56.4 parts of 4-nitro-4'- (2 "-oxy-benzoylamino) -stben-2,2'-disulfonic acid sodium are in. 600 parts by volume of water and 4 parts of sodium hydroxide and at 55 to 65 with thorough stirring with 15 , 4 parts of diethyl sulfate added.
The mixture is stirred at 55 to 65 until the mixture reacts neutrally or only weakly phenol-phthalein-alkaline, by adding sodium hydroxide solution produces a clearly phenol-phthalein-alkaline reaction, allowed to cool and the reaction product, a yellow, crystalline mass, sucks off.
The disodium salt of 4-nitro-4 '- (2 "-ethoxy-benzoylamino) -stilbene-2,2'-disulfonic acid obtained in this way is converted in the usual way by the Bechamp method with cast iron powder and acetic or hydrochloric acid to the 4 -Amino-4 '- (2 "-ethoxy-benzoyl-amino) -stilbene-2,2'-disulfonic acid reduced. The latter is a pale yellowish to reddish powder, which is clearly soluble in water when alkaline agents are added.
25.9 parts of 4-amino-4 '- (2 "-ethoxy-benzoyl-amino) -stilbene-2,2'-disulfonic acid are dissolved in 800 parts of water and 5.3 parts of alc. Soda neutral and at -2 to 0 with vigorous stirring with an acetone solution of 9.25 parts of cyanuric chloride, the reaction mixture being kept neutral to slightly acidic by the simultaneous addition of 15% sodium carbonate solution.
The reaction mixture, which has been kept neutral with soda, is stirred until primary amino groups are no longer detectable. Should diazotizable amino groups still be detectable even after prolonged stirring. a small amount of cyanuric chloride is added again until the diazo reaction does not occur.
The primary condensation product obtained in this way is then mixed with excess, aqueous ammonia and then heated to 90 to 100, the acetone being distilled off and recovered using a descending condenser. Holds with the addition of ammonia. the mixture is clearly phenolphthalein alkaline for 11/2 hours at 90 to 100, filtered hot and salted out with 100 parts of sodium chloride.
The disodium salt of 4- [2 "', 4"' - diamino-triazinyl-amino- (6 "')] -4'- (2" -ethoxybenzoylamino) -stben-2,2'-disulfonic acid thus obtained forms a pale yellowish powder and is suitable for lightening uncolored cellulose fibers.
