Device for continuously indicating the mean value of the ratio
of two variable quantities, in particular the mean value of the speed
of a vehicle from a determined time.
The present invention relates to a device intended to indicate continuously the average value of the ratio of two variable quantities, in particular the average value of the speed of a vehicle from a determined instant.
This device is characterized in that it comprises a cam, means for driving said cam in rotation as a function of one of the two variable quantities, an explorer member arranged to explore the surface of Ja cam and connected to an indicator element of the desired average value, means for driving, as a function of the other variable variable, said explorer member parallel to the axis of rotation of said cam, and means provided for returning said cam and said explorer member to a starting position .
The single figure of the accompanying drawing shows an embodiment of the object of the invention, given by way of example and seen in perspective.
The device shown is used to indicate the average value of the speed of a vehicle from a determined instant. This device comprises a cam 1 which is rotated at a uniform speed by means of the gears 2, 3 and 4, driven by the toothed wheel 5, set in motion by a barrel spring.
The toothed wheels 6, 7 and 8, connecting the toothed wheel 5 to an exhaust 9, ensure a constant speed of rotation of the cam; they constitute in. sort of the elements of a clockwork movement.
Thus, the angle of rotation of the cam 1 a, from a determined instant, is a function of time.
The value of the space traveled by the vehicle is introduced into the device by a shaft 10, which can, for example, be connected by a flexible hose, by reduction gears, or by any other means, to a wheel of the vehicle. vehicle or to an organ desmodromically connected to the latter. The number of revolutions of shaft 10, from a determined instant, will therefore be proportional. to the distance traveled.
Gears 11, 12 and 13 transmit, with a very large reduction, the rotation of the shaft 10 to a winding drum 14, on which is wound a cable 15, normally returned by a spring 16, acting on a drum. unwinder 17.
The cable 15 is in two sections between which is inserted a flange 18 of an explorer member, capable of sliding along a rule 19 disposed parallel to the axis of rotation of the cam 1 and next to the latter.
Besides the. flange 18, this explorer member comprises an arm 20 terminating in a finger 21 bearing on the cam and arranged to explore the surface of this cam.
A toothed wheel 22, located on the shaft 10 and driven by the latter via a friction coupling 23, produces the winding of the barrel spring driving the wheel 5. The clock mechanism of the device is thus automatically reassembled by the movement of the vehicle.
The rule 19 is rotatably mounted and can rotate with the flange 18, driving with it a toothed sector 24 which, by means of a toothed wheel 25, moves an indicator hand 26 showing the hourly speed on a suitable dial not shown.
The operation of the device described is as follows:
We start from a determined moment when all the elements of the device have a starting or zero position, in which the flange 18 is located near the unwinding drum 17 where the cable 15 is wound, and the cam is in a position. determined angular position; from this moment, the vehicle which is equipped with such a device covers various distances, at various speeds.
Cam 1 rotates regularly, over time.
Actuated by a wheel of the vehicle or a member connected to it, the cable 15 is wound up on the drum 14 and the finger 21 thus moves as a function of the distance traveled.
The surface of the cam is made in such a way that, in correspondence with the point reached at any time by the finger 21, the veeteur radius of the cam in this point is proportional to the ratio between the total distance traveled (cable winding) and the total time taken to travel it (rotation of the cam); the needle 26 will thus move as a function of this ratio, that is to say of the average speed resulting from the division of the first factor by the second.
The surface of such a cam is generated by a family of curves, functions of the two independent variables (space traveled and time, in the present example), said curves differing from each other by a parameter corresponding to the vector radius of the cam materializing the ratio of the two variables considered. In the embodiment described, said family of curves is made up of a series of cylindrical helices each having a constant radius and pitch, this radius and pitch being different from one helix to another.
Given, on the other hand, that the measurements are all made from a determined instant, that is to say from a starting point of the elements involved in the device, it is obvious that the possibility of returning the cam 1 and the exploration member to said starting position.
This possibility is guaranteed by the organs which will be described.
First, and for the cam 1, by a clutch 27, second, and for the cable 15, controlling the finger 21, by a clutch 28. The first clutch, ge is eoIll- mandated by a fork 29, the second by a fork 30.
The fork 29 ′ is actuated by a cam 31 and a linkage 32, the fork 30 by a cam 33 and a lever 34. The two cams are integral with a rod controlled in rotation pa. r a handle 35, which can occupy three positions designated respectively by 1 * by 0 and by 2.
In position 2, the cams 31 and 33 cause the disengagement and release of the drum 14 and of the cam 1. The cable 15, wound on the drum 14, is unwound from this drum to be wound on the drum 17 under 1. effect of the return spring 16. As for the cam 1, it is a spring 37 which, by means of the wheels 38 and 39, brings it back to the. starting position.
It could also happen that one wishes to neutralize the effect of time, for example to obtain an average speed by eliminating certain periods of stopping of the vehicle.
In this case, the handle 35 is brought into position at this moment, a cam 40, acting on a lever 41 and through it on a linkage 42, 43, causes a lever 45 to swing around the axis 44, which comes into place. in the. trajectory of the anchor of the escapement 9; cam 1 thus stops rotating. Provision could also be made for the operation of the handle 35 and via the cam 40 to be able to immobilize the drive means of the explorer member.
