Method for measuring the average speed of a vehicle and apparatus for implementing this method The present patent has for objects a method for measuring the average speed of a vehicle throughout a determined route and a measuring device for implementing this method.
Numerous measuring devices are already known already comprising a first device actuated, for example, by an odometer, a second device actuated by a clockwork movement, and a hand indicating at each moment the quotient of the distance covered from the start of a race up to that moment, by the time taken to cover this distance.
Some of these devices establish the quotient to be indicated by logarithmic means, in the sense that the mechanisms actuated respectively by the kilometer counter and by the clockwork movement each have a logarithmic cam acting on a differential,
which establishes the difference between the logarithms of the distance traveled and the time taken to travel it and which actuates the indicator hand via a third logarithmic cam.
In other known measuring devices, the quo holds is established trigonometrically, based on the definition of the tangent of an angle or on the basis of theorems relating to like triangles.
Finally, there are also measuring devices which determine the quotient in question electrically, - on the basis of Ohm's law.
However, the known devices have the drawback either of being too imprecise, or else too expensive, or of not being suitable for assembly, for example in a motor car. Thus, the devices established sant the desired quotient by logarithmic route are first of all expensive because of the shape of the cams. In addition, they do not make it possible to indicate the average speed before a more or less long time, because the logarithms of the numbers from zero to one are negative.
The apparatuses establishing the trigo-metric quotient or on the basis of theorems relating to similar tri-angles, generally comprise two crossed smooth runners, to which a clearance must be given that the indication of the mean cannot be furnished with any precision. only after a relatively long time.
As for the devices indicating the quotient of distance by time, based on Ohm's law, they cannot easily be fitted in a motor vehicle, because to give a somewhat precise indication, it is essential to use a perfectly stabilized current source.
The object of the process according to the present patent is to create a means of establishing the desired quotient based on a law other than those used heretofore, so that the indication of the average speed is at least precise. after the first quarter of an hour. of racing and can be supplied by simple components, inexpensive to manufacture.
The method according to the present patent is characterized in that one applies, at a fixed point of a lever, a force directly proportional to the distance traveled by the vehicle, in that a moving unit is moved along this lever. , at a speed directly proportional to the time taken by the vehicle to travel the distance corresponding to said force applied to the lever, and in that the reaction to be exerted on said crew is measured,
to keep said lever in balance in a determined position.
The method according to the present patent thus operates on the basis of the definition of the moment of force in mechanics.
The apparatus according to the present patent, intended to ensure the implementation of this process, is characterized in that it comprises a spring exerting a force at the end of a lever arm, a mechanism. 'arm @ age of this res out, actuated by an odometer of the vehicle, a device for resetting said winding mechanism to zero, a movable crew along said lever arm, a drive mechanism of this crew. , operated by a clockwork movement,
so as to move said crew from a starting point located at the pivot point of the lever, towards said end of the latter, a device for returning said crew to its starting point, and a dynamometer connected to said crew.
In order for the force, which is applied to the end of the lever of the instrument according to the present patent, to produce a moment proportional to the distance traveled by the vehicle, it is important to use a dynamometer which does not modify this force by measuring. The safest way to achieve this is to use a dynamometer which does not cause the lever of the device to move.
For this purpose, it is possible to use a dynamometer which comprises a differential, one of the solar wheels of which is rotated at constant speed, the sun gear of which is secured to an indicator needle subjected to the action of a return spring and the other .wheel solar is subjected to a braking directly proportional to the force to be measured.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the measuring apparatus according to the present patent and it illustrates, by way of example, an embodiment of the process according to this patent.
Fig. 1 is a schematic perspective view of the measuring device, part of the latter being cut away, and FIG. 2 is a sectional view of part of this apparatus. The dynamometer of the apparatus shown comprises a differential 1 mounted on a shaft 2, to which is fixed an indicator needle 3 moving opposite a graduation 4 of a dial. The shaft 2 is subjected to the action of a return spring 5, which tends to bring the needle 3 back to the origin of the graduation 4.
The differential 1 comprises two sun wheels 6, 7, mounted idly on the shaft 2, as well as a planetary gear attached to this shaft. This planetary crew com takes a support 8 fixed to the shaft 2 by pins 9, as well as two toothed wheels 10, freely pivoting around tenons with heads 11 planted in corresponding holes of the support 8. A drive wheel 12 is fixed to the sun wheel 6. This wheel 12 is connected to a motor device (not shown), which drives it at constant speed, in the direction of arrow a, when the dynamometer is in service.
A disc 13 is likewise attached to the sun wheel 7.
The dynamometer also comprises a lever 14, pivoted at 15 at one of its ends and carrying a rotating roller 16 at its other end.
The force to be measured is normally applied at a determined point of the lever 14, so as to press the roller 16 more or less strongly against the disc 13.
The operation of this dynamometer is as follows: When no force is applied to the lever 14, the planetary gear of the differential 1 is immobilized by the spring 5 in the position of the needle 3 corresponding to the origin of the graduation 4 and the wheel 13 rotates at the same speed as the wheel 12. On the other hand, when a force is applied to the lever 14, this has the effect of increasing the rolling friction between the disc 13 and the roller 16 .
The disc 13 therefore remains stationary for a certain time and the sun wheel 6 drives the planetary gear of the differential in the direction of the arrow a, which causes a corresponding displacement of the needle 3, as well as a certain winding of the gear. spring 5. When the degree of winding. of the spring 5 balances the rolling friction between the disc 13 and the roller 16, the planetary gear of the differential is mobilized and the disc 13 as well as the sun wheel 7 take their rotation at the same speed as wheels 6 and 12.
As the spring 5 exerts on the shaft 2 a return torque directly proportional to the angle of rotation of this shaft and the degree of winding of the spring 5 is itself proportional to the rolling friction between the disc 13 and the roller 16, it follows that the deflection of the needle 3 is directly proportional to the force applied to the lever 14.
Such a dynamometer can be used to measure forces with intensities ranging from one to ten units of force.
The dynamometer described has the advantage of allowing the measurement of a force without the point of attack of this force undergoing a displacement.
In addition to the dynamometer described, the measuring apparatus shown comprises a lever 17 pivoted at 18. A coil spring 19 is hooked to one end of an arm of the lever 17. The other end of the spring 19 is attached. at one end of a wire 20 passing over a reference 21 and the other end of which is anchored to a pulley 22 mounted on a shaft 23. The pulley 22 and the shaft 23 are rotated in the direction of the arrow b from the odometer 24 of the vehicle on which the writing measuring device is mounted. A cone clutch is inserted between counter 24 and shaft 23.
A part 25 of this clutch is fixed to the end of the shaft 23. The other part, 26, of this clutch is integral in rotation with a shaft 27 dragged by the counter 24; but it can move axially along this shaft, against the action of a spring 28 bearing on a wedge 29 fixed to the shaft 27.
By driving the pulley 22 in the direction of the arrow b, the counter 24 causes a winding of the wire 20 on the pulley 22 and it consequently increases the tension of the spring 19. The latter is thus armed in proportion to the records of the counter 24, so that it generates on the lever 17 a moment of force proportional to the distance that the vehicle on which the measuring instrument described is mounted,
travels from a determined starting point.
The resetting of the organs of the instrument driven by the counter 24 is carried out manually using a button 30 fixed to a shaft 31 carrying a cam 32, which then engages with the part 26 of the clutch (25, 26) to release the cones of this clutch from one another. The spring 19 returns: then a pin 33, planted in the pulley 22, against a fixed stop 34, which thus determines one of the starting positions of the measuring device.
To avoid overvoltage of the spring 19, the instrument further comprises a cursor 35, sliding freely on a bar 36 and carrying two fingers 37 and 38. When the finger 37 is actuated by a ramp 39 of the pulley 22, the finger 38 acts on the part 26 of the clutch (25, 26), so as to move it away from the part 25, against the action of the spring 28. The instrument also comprises a crew 40, movable along the lever arm 17 from its pivot point 18, towards the anchor point of spring 19.
This crew comprises two rollers 41, which roll along the lever 17, as well as a third roller 42, determining a measurement point described below. The crew 40 is connected to an endless chain 43, mounted on two chain wheels 44, 45. The wheel 44 is driven in the direction of arrow c by a clock movement 46, by means of a friction coupling 47. The wheel 45 carries a pin 48 arranged to abut against an arm 49, integral with the shaft 31, when the crew 40 reaches the end of its travel.
From this moment, the coupling 47 slips and the crew 40 is no longer trained.
The latter is brought back to its starting position by the button 30, during the movement which produces the resetting of the organs driven by the counter 24.
As the crew 40 moves at constant speed under the action of the clockwork movement 46, it follows that the distance from the measuring point 42 to the pivot 18 of the lever 17 is directly proportional to the time.
If F denotes the reaction that must be exerted on the lever 17 at point 42 to keep this lever in equilibrium under the action of the force exerted on it by the spring 19, e the lever arm of this reaction and M the moment of force exerted on the lever 17 by the spring 19, the theorem of moments gives the equation M = Fe hence.
EMI0003.0019
As the moment M is directly proportional to the distance L traveled by the vehicle and e, at the time t taken to travel it, we have
EMI0003.0023
The reaction measured at point 42 is directly proportional to the average speed of the vehicle.
To measure this reaction at point 42, however, the corresponding roller cannot be made to act directly on the lever 14 of the dynamometer. On the contrary, the lever 14 must be connected to this roller 42, so that the action of the roller 42 on the lever 14 is independent of the position of the crew 40 along the lever 17. Such a connection can be: ensured , according to the known principle of the balance, by two levers 50, 51. The lever 50 pivots at 52 and it is connected to the lever 14 by a rod 53, located in the middle of the length of the lever 51.
The latter has one end connected by a rod 54 to the lever 50 and the other end connected by a rod 55 to the lever 14; the distances, on the one hand, from the rod 55 to the pivot 15 and, on the other hand, from the rod 54 to the pivot 52, are equal to each other. The roller 42 acts on the lever 51 and thus transmits to the lever 14 a force equal to the reaction which must be exerted at point 42 to keep the lever 17 in balance, whatever the position of the roller 42 along the lever 51. .
As the lever 14 neither flexes nor moves under the action of the forces exerted on it, its position being in fact determined by the roller 16, it is clear that the same is true of the lever 50 and in particular of the lever 51.
