Lap counter. The object of the present invention is a revolution counter, of which the figure of the accompanying drawing shows, by way of example, an embodiment, the glass, the needles and the casing being removed.
On the box 1 of the meter is placed, removably, a device 2 comprising speed reduction members actuated by a wheel 3, of determined circumference, this wheel being intended to roll on the periphery of the element of a machine which is wants to know the linear speed; the wheel 3 can be replaced at will by a metal part having for example a rubber key member which is intended to come into engagement with the machine element whose number of revolutions is to be known.
The rotary movements of the wheel 3 are communicated, by the aforementioned speed reducing members, and by a train (reversible gears making it possible to use the counter for any direction of rotation, these members not being shown in the drawing, to a toothed wheel 4, which is engaged with a toothed wheel 5, freely mounted on a pivot 6, said wheel 5 being interposed between an upper gear wheel 7 and a lower pinion 8, the two forming body with pivot 6.
A coil spring, not shown in the drawing, is interposed between the ratchet wheel 7 and the wheel 5 against which it bears with a certain pressure so that the wheel 5 can drive the ratchet wheel 7 by friction, as soon as this the latter is released automatically from the action of a locking pin, fixed to a lever 33, and able to engage with the teeth of the ratchet 7.
The pinion 8 is in engagement with an intermediate wheel 9, which is itself in engagement with. a toothed wheel 10 fixed to a pivot 11, comprising a pinion 12; the latter meshes with an intermediate wheel 13, which engages with a wheel 14, fixed on a) pivot 15. The gear train described above suitably multiplies the number of revolutions recorded by the apparatus so that the total is made legible on a circular plate comprising three graduated dials indicating the number of recorded revolutions, in units, hundreds and miles, and this by means of needles mounted respectively on the upper ends of the pivots 6, 11 and 15, slightly exceeding the above-indicated circular plate, not shown in the drawing.
Below the latter are fixed on the pivots 6, 11 and 15, cams 6 ', 11' and 15 'in the shape of a heart, the usefulness of which is described below.
This counter also comprises a winding mechanism and a clockwork movement actuating the hand making it possible to read the measurements recorded in an automatically determined unit of time.
This movement comprises a winder comprising an external pusher 16, the end 16 'of which presses against a rod 17, riveted below a cut plate, forming a lever 18 which can pivot at 19, as soon as pressure is exerted. on the pusher 16; the travel of the lever 18 is limited by means of a stop screw 20, the rod of which passes through a slot 21, made in the lever 18; the latter is constantly returned to its rest position by means of a spring 51.
The lever 18 has on its periphery three rectilinear parts 22, 22 ', 22 ", intended to come to press against the cams 6', I1 'and 15', and allow them to be rotated to place them in a determined position. , equivalent to the indication of zero by the hands of the three dials graduated in units, hundreds and miles; for this it is sufficient to move lever 18 to the full position.
The lever 18 has a fourth rectilinear part 23 intended to push a rod 24, projecting from a slot 25, made in the upper metal plate serving as a frame, said rod 24 being riveted to the end of a lever 26 causing, by a latching a pivot 27, on which is fixed a toothed wheel 28; the latter meshes with a pinion 29 fixed on a pivot 30, the upper end of which projects out of the metal plate serving as a frame, comprises a cam 31, with epicyclic profile, provided with a pawl 32, the latter being intended to allow the nose of a lever 33 to exit the notch of the cam 31, by pivoting slightly on himself.
The cam 31 has on its periphery a notch into which the nose which the lever 33 comprises, pivoting at 34, and constantly brought back to its rest position by a spring 35, can penetrate.
The lever 33 has a hook 36 of tines to come into engagement with the hook 37 which comprises a flexible rod 38 fixed by one end to the lever 18.
The lever 26 is constantly returned to its rest position by a coil spring 39.
The clockwork movement is regulated by a spiral balance 40, so that a seconds hand, not shown in the drawing, fixed on the pivot 30 can move on a scale graduated in time units (seconds, printed at the periphery of the circular plate comprising the three aforementioned dials graduated in units, hundreds and miles.
On the movable end of the lever 33 is fixed by one end a flexible strand 41, the other movable end of which is intended to come to bear on the periphery of the balance 40 as soon as said balance has reached its rest position, so as to 'immobilize; the immobilization of the latter is therefore effected by this braking as soon as the cam 31 has executed one revolution, or in other words as soon as the needle moving on the scale graded in units of time has made a complete revolution.
The operation of the revolution counter described is as follows: the wheel 3 being pressed against the element of the machine whose linear speed is to be measured, for example, has the effect of driving in rotation, by means of the reduction members gear, wheel 4 and freely mounted wheel 5.
It then suffices to fully push the push button 16 so as to cause the lever 18 to pivot, so that its rectilinear parts 22, 22 ', 22 "come to press simultaneously against the cams 6', 11 'and 15' and place them in a position equivalent to the zeroing of the hands of the dials graduated in units, hundreds and miles. Simultaneously the rectilinear part 23 of the lever 18 has come to push the rod 24 to a certain extent, which has the effect of tensioning the spring 39 of the clockwork movement; likewise the hook 37 of the flexible rod 38 has come into engagement with the hook 36 of the lever 33.
By allowing the pusher 16 and the lever 18 to return to their rest position, it follows that the lever 33 is rotated to a certain extent by the hook 37, returning back, enough so that the nose of the lever 33 sort of the notch that the cam 31 has and comes to rest on the periphery of the latter, and on the other hand so that the locking pin of the lever 33 is no longer in engagement with the teeth of the ratchet 7, at this time the cam 31, driven by pinion 29, wheel 28, lever 26 and spring 29, performs one complete revolution so that lever 33, under the influence of the epicyclic profile of cam 31, pivots and gradually resumes its primitive position until the nose of lever 33 again enters the notch of cam 31,
and immobilizes the latter, while the flexible strand 41 has come to brake and immobilize the spiral balance 40.
Simultaneously with the stopping of the cam 31, the ratchet wheel 7 is immobilized by the locking pin of the lever 33, which has voted, so that the wheel 5 turns freely on its pivot 6, and thus automatically disengages the gear train ac. operating the needles indicating the speed measurements.
It goes without saying that the revolution counter described can be constructed in different ways without departing from the scope of the invention; for example, the counter mechanism could be set so that the seconds hand, indicating the time in which a speed measurement is made, completes a full revolution in 15 seconds, instead of a minute, so as to allow rapid measurement of speed.
