Abstract

1,133,721. I. C. engine throttle valve linkages. SMITHS INDUSTRIES Ltd. Jan. 21, 1966 [Jan. 29, 1965 (2); May 21, 1965; Jan. 10, 1966], Nos. 3927/65; 3928/65; 21535/65 and 1125/66. Heading F1B. [Also in Division F2] A continuously variable-ratio transmission device is included in a pedal/throttle valve linkage so that for a given movement of a cable inner 4, Fig. 1, adapted to be operatively connected to a throttle valve spindle 7, the angular movement of valve spindle 7 is greater at large valve openings than at small valve openings. When the throttle pedal is depressed cable inner 4 is moved upwardly rotating cam 1 and spindle 7 in the anti-clockwise direction. Other embodiments operate as follows: - Fig.2 (not shown). A cable inner (15) is attached to a shaped lever (13) which engages a shaped lever (16) fixed to a butterfly valve spindle (17). When the throttle pedal is depressed the inner (15) rotates lever (13) in the clockwise direction thereby rotating lever (16) in the anti-clockwise direction. Fig.3. The cable inner 30 is connected to a curved lever 27 which is welded to a pivot pin 25 and engages an oppositely-curved lever 28. The latter lever is welded to a pivot pin 26 and is connected through a link 33 to the throttle valve spindle. When the throttle valve is depressed levers 27 and 28 are respectively rotated about pins 25 and 26, the point of engagement between the levers 27 and 28 moving so as to vary the transmission ratio. Fig.6 (not shown). The cable inner (48) is connected to one end of a curved lever (44) which has indentations (51) meshing with teeth (50) in a trough-like bracket (41). The opposite end of lever (44) is connected to the throttle spindle through a link (47). When the throttle pedal is depressed the lever (44) rolls along the bracket (41) so as to vary the transmission ratio. Fig.8. The cable inner 108 passes around a pulley 106 to an attachment point 107 located adjacent the periphery and which coincides with the mounting of the pulley on arm 111 which is secured to the butterfly valve spindle. When the throttle pedal is depressed the cable inner 108 moves the pulley 106 towards the fixing point of the cable outer 101. This causes rotation of the pulley 106 and rotation of the arm 111, the combined effect of which varies the transmission ratio. Fig. 11. The cable inner 123 is attached to a point lying on the throttle spindle axis 124. The cable outer 125 is attached to a sleeve (129) Fig. 10 (not shown) which is carried by a pivoted U-shaped arm 128. A link 120 is pivotally-mounted on sleeve 129 and is connected to an arm 121 attached to the throttle spindle. The longer limb (130) of arm 128 is carried by an axial slot in a moulded member 132 which is rotatably mounted on plate 126. Member 132 has a serrated disc (135) Fig. 12 (not shown) which is engaged by a spring to retain the device in a datum position. When the throttle pedal is depressed the cable outer 125 moves away from the throttle spindle axis 124. An extension 122 of link 120 is held in engagement with arm 128 by a light spring. Link 120 is moved and rotated and thereby rotates the arm 121 to vary the transmission ratio.
