Process for the preparation of a mixture of higher molecular weight aliphatic sulfides. In the main patent 168132 a process for the preparation of a mixture of higher molecular weight aliphatic sulfides has been described in which a mixture of higher alkyl halides, which corresponds to the alcohol mixture obtainable by reducing naturally occurring fats and oils, is reacted with the sodium salt of acaptoacetic acid.
It has now been found that a mixture of technically valuable sulfides of higher organic compounds which have soap character can also be achieved by using a mixture of higher alkyl halides corresponding to the alcohol mixture obtained by reducing naturally occurring fats and oils , with a sodium salt of mercaptoethanesulphonic acid, which can be obtained by reacting, Q-haloethanesulphonic acid with NaHS or other compounds that provide mercapto groups,
implements. The new mixture of sodium salts of higher alkyl mercaptoethane sulfonic acids has soap-like and emulsifying properties. It can be used as an auxiliary material in the textile industry and as a soap substitute.
Example: 20.4 parts by weight of the disodium compound of mercaptoethanesulphonic acid, which can be obtained by reacting P-haloethanesulphonic acid with NaHS or other compounds containing 31capto groups, are 80% by weight of hot alcohol in 500 parts by weight solved.
Then 20 parts by weight of a mixture of higher alkyl chlorides corresponding to the alcohols obtainable by reducing the coconut oil fatty acids are added. The mixture is heated for 3 to 4 hours in a reflux condenser on a water bath and, when the reaction is complete, filtered hot. On cooling, the mixture of the sodium salts of the higher allzylmercaptoetharosulfuric acids crystallizes out as a white crystal mass. The new product is clearly soluble in water.
The aqueous solutions show good foaming properties: It can be used as a soap substitute and as an auxiliary in the textile industry.
