Description

Process for the preparation of a mixture of higher molecular weight aliphatic sulfides. The main patent 168132 describes a process for the preparation of a mixture of higher molecular weight aliphatic sulfides, in which a mixture of higher alkyl halogerrides, which corresponds to the alcohol mixture obtained by reducing naturally occurring fats and oils, is mixed with the sodium salt which converts lzercaptoacetic acid.

It has now been found that a mixture of technically valuable sulfides of higher organic compounds that have a soap character can also be obtained by using a mixture of the alkali compounds of higher alkyl mercaptans which corresponds to the alcohol mixture obtainable by reducing naturally occurring fats and oils , with the sodium salt of an ß-halogerr-ätlran-a-sulfonic acid.

The new mixture of the sodium salts of higher alkyl mereaptoethane sulfonic acids has soap-like and emulsifying properties. It can be used as an auxiliary substance in the textile industry and as a soap substitute.

Example: 44 parts by weight of a mixture of higher alkyl mercaptars, which correspond to the alcohols obtainable by reducing the coconut oil fatty acids, are mixed in an alcoholic solution with a solution of 8 parts by weight of caustic soda in alcohol. A solution of 42 parts by weight of sodium P-bromethane-a-sulfonic acid in 400 parts by weight of alcohol is added to this solution. The mixture is heated in the reflux condenser on the water bath for 3 hours. After the reaction has ended, the sodium bromide formed during the reaction is filtered off under warm conditions.

On cooling, the mixture of the sodium salts of the higher alkyl mercaptoethanesulfonic acids crystallizes out in the form of a white crystal mass. The new product is clearly soluble in water; the solutions show good foaming power. It can be used as a soap substitute.
