Description

Process for the preparation of a mixture of higher molecular weight aliphatic sulfides. In the main patent 168132, a process for the preparation of a mixture of higher molecular weight aliphatic sulfides has been described, in which a mixture of higher alkyl halides, which corresponds to the alcohol mixture obtainable by reducing naturally occurring fats and oils, is reacted with the sodium salt of mercaptoacetic acid .

It has now been found that a mixture of technically valuable sulfides of higher organic compounds that have a soap character can also be obtained by adding a mixture of the alkali compound - higher alkyl mercaptans, the alcohol mixture obtainable by reducing naturally occurring fats and oils corresponds, finitely treated with the sodium salt of a monohaloacetic acid.

The new mixture of the sodium salts of higher alkyl mercaptoacetic acids has soap-like and emulsifying properties. It can be used, among other things, as an auxiliary in the textile industry and as a soap substitute.

Example: 44 parts by weight of a mixture of higher alkyl mercaptans, which correspond to the alcohols obtainable by reducing the coconut oil fatty acids, are mixed with a solution of eight parts by weight of caustic soda in 250 parts by weight of alcohol. Furthermore, 18.8 parts by weight of monochloroacetic acid are dissolved in 100 parts by weight of water and neutralized with a solution of eight parts by weight of caustic soda in 50 parts by weight of water. The two solutions are combined and heated together for three hours on the water bath at the reflux condenser. After the reaction has ended, the solvent is evaporated on the water bath.

The residue can be recrystallized from alcohol. The mixture of the sodium salts of the higher alkyl mercaptoacetic acids is obtained as a white crystal mass which is soluble in water and shows good foaming. The new product can be used as a soap substitute.
