Description
Process for the production of a new textile auxiliary. We have found that the sulphonation of hydroxyl groups in ss, ss', ss "-trihydroxy-tert-butylstearamide through the action of a sulphonating agent such as oleum gives a new textile auxiliary with valuable properties. <I> Example : </I> <B> 60 </B> parts of ss "-trihydroxy-tertiary-butylstearamide are slowly brought into 180 parts of 94% sulfuric acid at ordinary temperature with vigorous stirring.
A further 20 parts of amide and 40 parts of 50% oleum are then added to the mixture at the same time. The whole is stirred for 30-31 minutes and then carefully neutralized with 15% aqueous sodium hydroxide.
The product forms a thin, white dough, which mainly consists of the two-base sodium salt of the disulfuric acid ester of the probable formula
EMI0001.0021
For example, it is equivalent to the sodium salt of the sulfuric acid ester of cetyl alcohol in neutral solution and better than the latter in hard water or acid solution.
It has an excellent cleaning effect on textile materials in acidic and alkaline baths and is also suitable for use in hard water. Other alkaline metal salts, for example potassium salts, are obtained by using other caustic alkalis instead of caustic soda.
fl, ss ', ss "-trihydroxy-tertiary-butylstearamide can be prepared by adding equal amounts of stearic acid and ss, ss', ss" -trihydroxy-tertiary-butylamine (compare Piloty and Ruff, $ er. 1897, 80; 1665, 2067) heated to <B> 180 '</B> until the development of steam ceases.
Recrystallization from methyl alcohol gives the product a white powder.
