Calculator. This invention relates to a calculating machine, characterized by the fact that it comprises number wheels, a trainer for controlling these wheels at will in one direction or the other, a motor, means for engaging. the motor with the trainer and to disengage it and calculation keys used to determine the duration of the coupling of the motor with the trainer and the direction of movement of the trainer.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the machine according to the invention, comprising for the control of the digit wheels of the counter mechanism, a driver: constituted by a rotary drum in which the values to be calculated are introduced. The values are fed into the control device of the counter mechanism by lowering a series of buttons.
The calculating machine shown is of the true rotary type comprising for the control of the counter mechanism a rotary "driver" of the reversible cycle type, that is to say receiving a rotational movement, from a initial or neutral stop position, the extent of a complete cycle, either in one direction or in reverse, to perform a cal cul operation. This trainer performs from the neutral stop position one or more complete 360 cycles in either direction and is stopped at the neutral stop position.
The counter mechanism is arranged on a carriage which is normally fixed with respect to the trainer and which is movable lengthwise to make possible the direct action of the trainer on the various number wheels or "knobs" of the counter mechanism. .
The drive receives its rotational movement from an electric motor which is preferably continuously energized while the machine is in use, a clutch and stop mechanism being interposed between these two. components to allow the trainer to run intermittently while the engine is running continuously. A reversing mechanism is interposed between the driver and the clutch to allow the driver to turn in either direction.

The machine shown is of the keypad type in which the values are entered into the machine by pressing down the keys. A machine of this type is described in Swiss Patent No. 113767. Lowering a key introduces a value, corresponding to the number marked on the key in a rotating drum arranged inside the machine, the rotation of the key. drum in either direction being performed to perform the calculation operation.
The values entered in the drum are transmitted, as the drum rotates, to the number wheels of a counter mechanism - which, in order to allow the direct action of the values chosen on the number wheels of the highest possible value. , is arranged so that it can be moved parallel to the axis: of the mechanism: value selector.
The appearance and general construction of the machine shown is analogous to that of the aforementioned patent. The machine comprises a reversible rotary driver for controlling the number wheels, the values to be calculated and then introduced into this driver by lowering buttons not shown. The means provided for introducing their values into the trainer by lowering the keys have been described in detail in the aforementioned patent.
The number wheels 3 are arranged in the longitudinally movable carriage 4 and are actuated, through an intermediate gear 5, by the reversible rotary drive 6 which comprises a series of selective drive elements 7 The trainer is actuated by a motor 8 and suitable devices are interposed between these two members to determine the rotation, the direction of the rotation and the duration of the. rotation of the coach.
Between the engine and the driver is interposed a clutch 9 which governs the rotation of the driver. The clutch 9 comprises a motor member 12 and a housing or receiver member 13, the latter being connected to the driver, while: the shaft 12 is connected to the motor by means of a suitable gear, such as shown in fig. 8. The gear train provided between the motor and the motor shaft 12 comprises a pinion 14 and toothed wheels 15, 16, 17. The wheels 15 and 16 are held by a spring 18 in the position -d'acoupling. friction, and these wheels are mounted on a hollow shaft through which passes the bar 19 controlling the reverse gear.
The reversing pinion 21 is provided with a grooved collar 22 and is mounted tongue and groove on a short shaft protruding from the receiver box 13. In the groove of the collar 22 is engaged a control yoke 23 fixed to the bar. 19. The reversing pinion 21, can be moved longitudinally to mesh either with a pinion 24 or with a pinion 25. The pinions 24 and 2 @ 5 are engaged and the pinion 2.5 meshes with a pinion 26 engener in turn with the pinion 27 of the drive shaft. When the pinion 21 is moved, the direction of rotation of the driver relative to the clutch is reversed.
The control bar 19 is moved longitudinally by a control cam 28 whose edge is engaged in a groove of the bar 19. The cam 28 pivots on the frame of the machine at 31, and receives an oscillating movement around it. its pivot to control the reverse gear.
The clutch comprises, as has been seen, the drive shaft 12 and the receiver box 13. Attached to the drive shaft 12 is a ratchet 32 which is subjected to the action of a pivoting pawl 33. on the housing 13. The pawl is normally biased towards the ratchet by a spring 34 and it is kept free from the teeth of the ratchet by a lever 35, called the clutch control lever, which passes through an aperture. of the housing and acts on a lug 36 of the pawl 33, thus causing the pawl to pivot about its axis and keeping it away from the teeth of the ratchet 32.
When the end of the lever 35 is disposed in the opening of the housing, the latter is locked in its normal position for the entire cycle. Control of the clutch lever 35 therefore has the effect of unlocking the housing and enabling the clutch to be engaged. A res comes out: 37 normally holds the lever 35 in the position in which it locks the clutch in the full cycle position.
The machine also includes means for predetermining the number of operations of the trainer, either forward or backward. These means comprise two series of number keys connected to a control mechanism which is actuated in synchro nism with the control of: the machine and whose role is to cause the clutch to disengage and to twist the housing in the full cycle position when the machine has operated a number of times represented by the value of the key down.
In: fig: 14 there is shown the automatic keypad unit comprising the series of keys with number 41 whose lowering determines the rotation of the driver in one direction and the series of keys with number 42 whose lowering determines the rotation of the drive in the opposite direction. Each series comprises nine consecutively numbered keys and an unlock key 43 associated with each row of keys to unlock the lowered keys of that row.
In the present arrangement, the lowering of any of the keys 41 determines the rotation of the driver forwards, as in the execution: of problems of addition, and the lowering of a any of the keys 42 determines the rotation of the driver in reverse or backward direction, as in performing subtraction problems. Lowering a button 41 has the effect of unlocking and engaging the clutch and placing the automatic control unit in the position represented by the value of the lowered button. Lowering any of the buttons 42 has the effect of performing these functions and, in addition, moving the reverse gear from its normal or forward control position to its backward control position. .
The cam 2, 8 which controls the reverse gear is normally maintained in the forward position by a spring 45 connected to an oscillating lever 46 which is itself connected to the cam 28 by a rod 47. In the fig. 1, the cam 28 is shown in the reverse position, having been brought to this position by the lowering of button 42 of the row of reverse buttons.
Each reverse key 42 is provided on its stem 51 with a cam projection 52 which engages a notch 53 of a smoothing neck bar 54, so that when a key 42 is lowered, the sliding bar is moved forward. At its front end, the sliding bar 54 is provided with a pin 55 engaged in a slot of a lever 56 ft voting through an intermediate point of its length on a fixed support 57.
On the lower end of the lever 56 pivots a bar 58 provided with a narrowed end 59 which passes through an opening of the rod 47, the latter being bent at the location of the opening so that the movement of the bar 58 towards the rear determines the movement of the link towards the rear. Therefore, when any of the buttons 42 is pressed, the link 47 is moved so as to bring the cam 28 to the reverse position.
The row of keys 41 is not provided with reverse gear means of this kind, so that when one of the keys 41 is lowered, the cam 28 remains in the forward position, being maintained in this position. operation by the spring 45. When the operation represented by the value of the lowered key is completed and the key is released, the spring 45 returns the sliding bar 54 to its normal position.
Each of the rows of keys 42 and 41 is provided with means by which the lowering of a key unlocks the housing 1 3 and produces the clutch. As previously stated, the clutch is normally locked in its full cycle position by the clutch lever 35 which is held in engagement with the housing 1-3 by the spring 37. The clutch lever clutch 3.5 carries at its end remote from the housing a pin 61 which is normally located in a notch 62 provided in the end of a clutch control bar 63 normally held bare in a retracted position by a spring 64, the notch 62 rotating its opening downwards.
A pin -65 carried transversely by the bar 63 is located directly behind a button control finger 66. This finger 6 is fixed to a flap 67 which is common to the two rows of keys 41 and 42 and which is moved towards the back when lowering any of the buttons. The movement of the flap, and therefore of the finger 66, backwards determines the rearward movement of the clutch bar 63 in antagonism to the action of the spring 6-1, which has the effect to oscillate the clutch lever 35 around its axis and to disengage the end of this lever from the housing 13. Consequently, the lowering of any one of the keys 41 or 42 produces the unlocking of the gearbox and therefore performs the clutch.
Each of the keys 41 and 42 bears on its rod 51 a projection forming a cam 69 which passes through a slot of a sliding bar 71. A sliding bar of this type is associated with each row of keys, and these two bars are in contact with each other. their rear end with the flap 67. Therefore, when any one of the keys 41, 42 is lowered, the corresponding slide bar 71 is moved rearward to oscillate the flap 67 and produce the clutch. .
Means are provided for producing the disengagement and locking the clutch housing 13 when the driver has operated a number of times corresponding to the value of the lowered key. Each row of keys 41 and 42 is associated with a value selector lever, which is double in the present example. This double lever comprises a lever 73 pivoting by its front end on a fixed support 74. And a lever 75 pivoting at the rear, on a fixed support 76, the two levers being connected to each other. a pivoting manner at an intermediate point of their length by an axis 77.
The forward end of the lever 7.5 is in alignment with the rear portion of the lever 73 and these aligned portions of the levers are located below the key shafts so that lowering a key causes motion to move. 'selectively the rear end of lever 73. The two levers 73 of the two rows of keys 41 and 42 are interconnected at their rear end where they are connected to the automatic selector device. Consequently, the lowering of a key of one or the other of the rows 4.1, 42 has the effect of placing the positive selector in the position corresponding to the value of the. down key.
The automatic selector device, shown in fig. 3 and 1: 3 is described in detail in the aforementioned patent. In the machine is disposed a sliding plate 81 having a stepped edge 82 and normally held in a forward position by a spring 83. The movement of the sliding plate 81 backwards a. the effect of disengaging the clutch lever 35 from the clutch bar 63, thus allowing this lever to engage with the clutch housing 13 and to lock this housing.
The smoothing plate 8'1 is moved rearward during the last operation of the trainer, operation determined by the. key value down. With the stepped plate 81 is com bined a rack 84 which is engaged with a pinion 85. In the toothing of this pinion is engaged a tooth 85a carried by the clutch housing 13, so that each rotation of the clutch moves the rack one degree rearward.
A spring loaded pawl 87 holds the rack in the withdrawn position. .On the front end of the chainring 84 pivots a lever 90 carrying a pin 86 which is located in the plane of the stepped edge 82 of the sliding plate 81.
The vier 90 is displaça.ble angularly around its pivot axis carried by the mesh cage 84 to allow the pin 86 to be brought into alignment with a rung or floor:
selected from the anterior face of plate 81, the successive rungs differing from each other by one, so that, with lever 90 having been moved to a selected position, pin 86 will contact the stepped face when the trainer will have turned a number of times less than one unit than the value selected by pressing the button down. In the next rotational movement of the driver, the pin causes slack plate 81 to be seen rearwardly and, in this movement, this plate acts to unlock the clutch lever 35.
On the sliding plate 81 a cam lever 88 pivots, the rear face of which is in contact with a fixed stop 89, so that the movement of the lower end of the lever towards the rear has the effect of making the lever pivot. around the stopper.
Laterally to the clutch bar 63 is disposed a pin 91 which is in contact with the cam face 92 of the lever 88, so that the rotation of the lever 88 around its axis causes the pin 91 to move upwards. , this movement having the effect of raising the clutch bar 63 so as to disengage its size 69 from the pin 61 of the clutch lever, then allowing the spring 37 to move this lever so that it brings its rear end into contact with the face of the clutch housing 13, so that the projection provided at the end of said lever falls into the opening of the housing and locks the latter in the full cycle position at the same time as 'it moves the pawl 33 to produce the clutch.
The lever 88 carries at its upper end a lip 93 placed above the pawl 87, so that the pivoting movement of the lever 88 causes the pawl to rise and unlock the rack 84 which is then returned. to its normal position by the spring 94.
The control lever 90 is selectively put into position by lowering the keys of one or the other of the rows 41, 42 The levers 78 associated with the two rows of keys are in contact by their ex rear end with a pin 95 carried by a lever 96 which pivots around an intermediate point of its length on the frame 97 of the mechanism determining the automatic rotation and which is provided at its other end with a pin 98 engaged in a slot 99 of the movable lever 90.
Therefore, lowering one of the keys of either row 41 and 42 has the effect of positioning lever 90 and, therefore, pin 86, so that the sliding plate 81 moves backward when the trainer has operated a number of times represented by the value of the key down.
Means are provided to retain the selected down keys 41 or 4: 2 in the down position and to unlock them when the operation represented by the value of the contemplated key has been completed. The rod, 51 of each key is provided laterally with two notches 101 and 102 and each row of keys is provided with an unlocking bar, row 41 being provided with an unlocking bar 103 and row 42 being provided with a release bar 104.
The bars 103 and 104 pivot at their ends on the frame of the keyboard unit and are interconnected by a threaded spacer 105, so that the two bars oscillate simultaneously to unlock the lowered key. The bar 104 is provided with a tongue 106 to which is connected a spring 107 which tends to maintain the bar in the position in which it engages with the rod of the key. Means are provided for making the bars 103 and 104 oscillate when the sliding bar 81 moves rearwardly so as to unlock them. keys down.
In the machine is pivotably disposed an angled lever 108, the front end of which is placed above the tongue 106, its other end being connected by a rod 10.9 to the sliding plate 81. When the sliding plate 81 is moved rearwardly by pin 86, the front end of lever 108 exerts downward pressure on tab 106, causing release bars 103, 104 to swing and unlock key. lowered.
Keys 41 and 42 representing values from 2 to 9 inclusive are of the same construction. The keys 41 'and 42' having the value 1 do not have any sizes laterally with which the unlocking bars are intended to engage to keep these keys lowered. Lowering one or the other of the buttons marked with the number 1 has the effect of moving the lever 90 i to position 1 and, at the same time, starting the operation of the machine, so that the pin 8.6 immediately comes into contact with the stepped face of the slide, and this takes place before the key has been able to return to its raised position, so that it is not necessary to provide means for maintaining these two keys lowered.
Each release key 43 is laterally provided with a cam surface 43 'which engages the release bar, so that when the key 43 is depressed, the release bar swings to unlock all the way. key that may have been lowered.
The lever 90 is normally placed with its pin 8.6 there in the zero position and when the machine is actuated other than by lowering one of the keys 42, this lever 90 remains at the zero position. The rack 84 is moved one tooth rearward with each rotation of the driver, and when the pin 86 occupies the zero position, means are actuated to unlock the rack and allow it to return forward. back to its normal position. On the frame 97 pivots a lever 1.12 whose front end 113 has the shape of a cam with which the pin 86 is in contact when it occupies its normal position.
The other end of the lever 112 is placed below a pin 114 carried by the end of the pawl 87, so that when the pin 8.6 is moved rearward by the movement of the. rack 84 towards the rear, the lever 112 oscillates around its pivot, lifts the pin 11: 4 and unlocks the rack 84 which is immediately returned to its normal position by the spring 94. Consequently, when the machine is not controlled by the lowering of one of the keys 41 or 42, the rack simply oscillates by one tooth alternately backward and forward.
During this movement, the slide 81 is not moved and the result is that the clutch lever 35 is not unlocked. The machine is also provided with start-up control keys 121 and 122, the lowering of which determines the rotation of the driver either backward or forward, respectively. These keys cooperate with an oscillating plate 123 which is connected to the clutch bar 63, the lowering of one or the other of these keys having the effect of causing the plate 123 to oscillate rearwardly to unlock. the lever 35 with the housing.
The keys 121 and 122 also cooperate with the oscillating lever 46 to which the link 47 is connected. The lever 46 is normally held in its forward position by the spring 45. The lowering of the start-up control button 122 will normally have no effect on the rocker lever 46. On the contrary, lowering the negative drive control button 12.1 will have the effect of rocking the lever 46 to actuate the cam 28 and move the pinion. reverse gear for reverse gear.
Therefore, lowering button 121 will cause the driver to rotate backward, and lowering button 12: 2 will. the effect of turning the trainer forward.
Means are provided whereby the rotation of the driver, determined by the lowering of any one of the keys 121, 122, will be limited to one rotation or may continue as long as the key is kept down. For this purpose, the machine -is provided with a key 124 called a "plus and minus" key. When this key occupies its. raised position, the driver will rotate as long as the start-up control button 121 or 122 is held down.
If it is desired to perform addition or subtraction problems, the key 124 is lowered and, by the projection 125 of this key which cooperates with a slider 126, the key is held in the lowered position. An unlocking key 127 is provided to move the slide 12; 6 and unlock the lowered “plus and minus” key 124.
To the key 124 is attached an arm 128 which is placed above the setting lever 75 and when the key 124:
is lowered, the lever 75 comes to occupy position 1, that is to say a position such that it places the pin 86 in position 1. In this position of the pin 86, the first rotation of the clutch has the effect that the rack 84 moves the slide 81 to produce the clutch. Therefore, when the key 124 is lowered, the lowering of one or the other of the towers 121, 122 determines only one rotation of the driver, whether or not this key 121 or 1225 is kept down.
The unlocking key 127 also has the role of unlocking the keys of the keyboard which have been lowered to introduce the first factor into the machine. As described in the aforementioned patent, these keys are hand held lowered by a slide 131, one of them 132 being shown by way of example in FIG. 10. The slide 131 is biased forward by a spring 1.33 and the movement of this slide backward determines the unlocking of the keyboard key.
The sliders are provided at the rear with a raised end 134 and a single pivoting shutter 135 is arranged in front of all the raised ends 134., On the frame of the machine a lever 1:36 pivots, one side of which is in contact. with the flap 135, the anterior end of this lever being placed below the rod of the release button 137. Consequently, when the button 127 is lowered, the lever 136 pivots around its axis, this which oscillates the shutter 135 to move all the slides 131 and thus unlock the al, aia- keys of the keyboard.
The shutter 135 can also receive its oscillation movement from a swing arm 138 which carries at its anterior end a hook which is intended to act on the shutter when the arm 138 occupies a position. as it describes a path intersecting the shutter. Normally, the arm 138 described. a path located below the shutter, but when the "plus and minus" key 124 is lowered, this key rests against a lever 139 carrying at its internal end a projection 141 - your contact with which the lever 138 moves.
When the key 124 is lowered, the projection 141 rises and brings the hook provided at the end of the arm 138 to a position such that its movement intersects the shutter 1.35, so that when the arm 138 swings for operation of the machine, the shutter 135 oscillates; as a result, the keys of the keyboard are unlocked during the first operation of the machine. This occurs when key 12.4 has been depressed.
On the other hand, if this key occupies its high position, the hook provided at the end of the arm 138 passes below the shutter 135, so that the keys of the keyboard are not unlocked. The key 24 is lowered when it is desired to perform addition and subtraction problems, but if it is desired to perform multiplication and division problems, key 124 is returned to its high position. The fi-. 15 and 16 relating to another embodiment of the machine according to the invention, in which there is only one row of keys 142 for determining the rotation.
Normally, lowering any of the keys rotates the driver forward a number of times represented by the key value. In this variant, the machine is provided with a "minus" or reverse key 143 which can be locked in the lowered position. This key is connected by an angled lever 144 to a bar 145 associated with the reverse gear link 47 in the same way as the. bar 58 of fig. 1.
Lowering the button 143 therefore has the effect of actuating the reversing mechanism to actuate the driver backwards, so that when the button 143 is lowered, the lowering of one of the buttons 142 has the effect that the trainer performs in the opposite direction the number of rotations represented by the lowered number key. In other respects. the machine of figs. 15 and 16 is identical to that of the other figures.
