Calculator. This invention relates to a calculating machine comprising a transversely movable carriage on which is mounted a recorder, a rotary drive cooperating with this recorder and a positioning device further comprising number keys which cause the rotation of the recorder. trainer and determine the amplitude of this rotation. It is characterized by a device which is activated automatically, at the end of the rotation determined by the lowered number key, so as to move the cart.
In the accompanying drawing, there is shown, by way of example, an embodiment of the object of the present invention.
Fig. 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of the machine, some parts having been broken up to show the construction in more detail; Fig. 2 is a side view of part of the machine, part of the casing being broken and part of the mechanism shown in section to show the device for moving the carriage; Fig. 3 is a cross section of the machine and shows the device for moving the carriage;
Fig. 4 is a vertical longitudinal section of the machine and shows the device for controlling the operation of the device for -displacement -du trolley; Fig. 5 is a vertical longitudinal section of the machine and shows the device for disabling the automatic movement device of the carriage when adjusting the machine for the execution of the addition and sub problems. traction.
The application of the present invention has been shown to a calculating machine of the type that is the subject of Swiss Patent No. 113767 of January 9, 1925, to which reference will be made for a description of the entire calculating machine. Due to the existence of this prior patent, it has not been considered necessary to describe all of the mechanisms which go into the construction of the present machine.
The machine of the aforementioned prior patent comprises a drive mechanism or rotary "driver" which cooperates with a product registrar mounted on a transversely movable carriage. It is provided with a row of keys, called "automatic multiplier keys", which determine in advance the number of rotations of the trainer. The trainer is normally kept locked in the full cycle position and when one of the automatic multiplier keys is lowered it is unlocked rusty, receives a number of revolutions equal to the value of the lowered key and is then rusty worm in the full cycle position.
In the machine which is the subject of the previous patent, the carriage is then brought manually to the following numerical order. In the present machine, a device is provided for automatically bringing the carriage to the following numerical order at the end of the operation resulting from the lowering of one of the automatic multiplier keys.
In Swiss Patent No. 138351 of February 6, 1929, there is shown a device which operates only when the machine has been adjusted to perform division problems and whose role is to automatically stop the trainer when the, quo figure holding correct appears in the quotient recorder and then automatically bring the carriage to its next position.
Part of the mechanism disclosed in this patent is employed in the present machine to produce the transverse displacement of the carriage, when the machine has been set to perform the multiplication problems, at the end of the predetermined number of revolutions of the machine. trainer, and reference will be made to this disclosure for a description of the parts which are common to the two machines.
The machine shown comprises a rotary trainer, such as that described in the prior patent, in which values are introduced by pressing down on keys. The trainer is operated by an electric motor, and its connection to this motor is governed by a clutch, so that the number of revolutions of the trainer can be determined by the operator as desired, either manually or by lowering one of the buttons which determine in advance the number of turns of the trainer.
The values entered in the driver are transmitted, when this driver is rotated in one or the other of the two directions of its rotation, to the number discs of the counter mechanism which, in order to make possible the direct action of their -selected values on the disks with figures .de the highest order of magnitude, is arranged so as to be able to be moved parallel to the axis of the coach. The counting mechanism comprises a series of number wheels which are mounted on a carriage movable in the transverse direction of the machine relative to the driver.
This transverse movement of the carriage can be effected as desired either by hand, -as in the above-mentioned prior patent, or automatically, by applying the mechanism described below, when the machine has been adjusted for perform multiplication problems.
The machine comprises a control shaft 2 (fig. 1) which is connected to the motor 3 so as to rotate with this motor and which is coupled with the driver 4 and disengaged or uncoupled from this member by a mechanism ( such as that described in the aforesaid bre vet) which controls the clutch enclosed within a clutch housing 5. This clutch housing is connected to the driver. in a way to rotate with this latest. -This casing is normally disengaged from control shaft 2, and these two elements are only coupled when the machine is running.
As the driver 4 rotates, the values which have been entered are transmitted to the digit disks 6 of the product recorder, which is mounted in the movable carriage 7 crosswise.
The carriage receives an intermittent movement in either direction of the transverse direction by the pivoting of a lever 8 (fig. 3) towards one side or towards the other of its position. noiinal @. This levi. # R can receive a movement of p:
.vot rnanuelleiaenft, as in the aforementioned patent, and it can additionally receive an automatic pivoting. numerical order.
The machine shown is provided with a row of keys 12 whose role is to determine in advance the number of turns of the trainer, the lowering of any one of these keys having the effect of making turn the trainer by a number @: of turns equal to the value of the button. The construction and mode of action of these automatic multiplier keys and the associated control device are described in detail in the aforementioned patent. The automatic control mechanism comprises a lever 13 capable of being brought to a certain number of determined positions, by lowering one of the keys 12.
This lever determines the position of a slide 14 carrying a wafer 15 which, during the movement of the slide, comes into contact with a stepped plate 16 and causes this plate to move backwards. The slide 14 moves back by one rung on each turn of the driver, which brings the pin 15 into contact with the grain plate 16 and causes this plate to move backwards. The slide 14 pivots on a mesh 17 which meshes with a pinion 18 advancing itself under the action of a tooth 19 carried by the clutch housing 5. The movement of the plate 16 backwards locks some devices whose role. is to disengage the clutch and lock the housing 5 in its full cycle position.
These devices are described in detail in the aforementioned patent. After having triggered the operation: of these devices, the stepped plate 16 advances again. To its normal position. In the present embodiment, the forward movement of the plate 16 is used to govern the operation of the motor-driven device for moving the cart. The stepped plate or trigger slide 16 is provided with a foot or lateral extension 21 which is itself provided at its outer end with a cam 22 (FIG. 4) which, in its forward movement, controls the carriage movement mechanism.
The energy required to move the cart is supplied by a drive shaft 23 which is coupled to the motor so as to rotate with it, as described in the aforementioned patent. To this shaft is fixed a ratchet wheel 24 surrounded by a clutch housing 2! 5 (Fig. 2). This casing carries a pawl 26 which cooperates with the ratchet wheel 24 to produce the coupling between this wheel and the casing. The casing 25 has a peripheral opening 27 through which a tooth 28 provided at the end of a lever 29 enters the casing to come into contact with a nose 31 of the pawl 26.
The parts normally occupy the position shown in fig. 2 in which the tooth 28 is in contact with the nose 31, which keeps the pawl 26 disengaged from the teeth of the ratchet wheel 24. When the lever 29 rotates clockwise, its tooth 28 disengages from the nose 31 and comes to occupy a position situated outside the periphery of the oaxter 25, which unlocks this casing and allows the pawl 26 to engage with the rocker wheel 24, which thus transmits its movement. ; nt to the housing 25.
The lever 29 is fixed to a shaft 32, and a device is provided for moving the shaft '32 at the desired time to effect the unlocking and engagement of the coupling and the locking and disengagement of this coupling.
To the clutch housing 25 is fixed a cam 36 arranged to cause a bar 37 to oscillate transversely which has for this purpose a notch 38 in which the cam is placed so that a full rotation of this cam produces a transverse oscillation of the bar 37. The bar 37 pivots at its other end on a slider 39 (FIG. 3) which is engaged with a pin 42 fixed to the oscillating lever 8, so that, at. each rotation of the cam 36, the lever 8 bones to move the carriage from one order of magnitude to the next.
The cam 36 has at its periphery a notch 43 (fig. 2) which, when the cam is stopped in the full cycle position, is located in the plane of the bar 37, so that this bar can be moved transversely when The clutch housing is worm rusty in the full cycle position. This makes it possible to operate the oscillating lever 8 by hand.
The clockwise rotational movement of the shaft 32 has the effect of unlocking the housing 25 and effecting the clutch to produce the rotation of the housing and the resulting displacement of the carriage. A device is provided to automatically oscillate the tree '32 at the end of a calculation operation in a numerical order, and @this movement: oscillating -of the shaft 3.2 is effected by the movement of the gravel plate or trigger slide 16 towards the front. To the shaft 32 is fixed a lever 45 (fig. 4) carrying at its free end a ga let 46.
On the shaft 32 is mounted idle, at a point substantially adjacent to the lever 45, a second lever 4: 2 which is biased upwardly by a spring 48 so that a surface 0 forming a cam 49 of this lever is applied. against the roller 46. The lever 47 has a preferably curved slot 51 in which is placed a pin 52 carried by a lever 53 which pivots at 54 on the frame of the machine. The lever 53 is provided with a short arm 55 which is normally in contact or substantially in contact with the rear face of the cam to the trigger element 22 fixed to the slider 16. The movement of the slider 16 is very small, and the role of the levers 53 and 47 is to amplify this movement and to transmit it to lever 45.
Normally, the cam 2.2 is located immediately in front of the lever arm 55 (fig. 4), and when the slider 16 moves backwards, this cam also moves backwards on one side. to the other of the lower end of the arm 55 and produces an inactive oscillating movement of the lever 53. When the slider 16 is unlocked, it is thrown forward by suitable springs and, in this movement, the projection or cam 22 rotates lever 53 counterclockwise, which has the effect of oscillating lever 47, and therefore lever 45, to an extent sufficient to disengage tooth 28 from lever 29 of the opening the clutch housing 25.
When the cam 22 has passed the lever arm 55, the parts return to their normal position and the tooth 28 slides on the periphery of the housing 25 and, at the end of one revolution of this housing, falls into the opening of said housing. housing, engaged with pawl 2,6, disengages. and locks the housing -in the full cycle position. A device is provided for disabling the automatic carriage moving mechanism when it is desirable to employ the machine in addition and subtraction problems.
The machine is provided with an add, add or "repeater" button 61 (fig. 5) which, when lowered, brings another mechanism of the machine to a position so that the execution of addition problems. Key 61 is normally held in its raised, or repeating, position by a res out 62 and has a notch 63 with which it can be locked in its lowered position. On the key 61 pivots a lever 64 which is supported at 65 and enters the machine so that its rear end 66 comes to be placed below the bar 37.
When the key 61 is lowered, the rear end 66 of the lever rises, causes the bar 37 to wobble around its pivot and raises the end of this bar so as to release it from the cam 36 (fig. . 3), so that the rotation of the cam has no effect on the movement of the carriage.
