Dispositif calculateur.

Le taquet 92 présente, en outre, une queue 92e qui coopère avec un levier 93 monté sur un pivot fixe 93a. A l'une de ses extré- mités, ce levier comporte un crochet non visi ble au dessin;
Par la tringle 166, cette opération fait également basculer l'arbre 154, ce qui dégage le bras 355 .du levier 155, lequel est alors rappelé par son ressort 177; par la tringle 176, ce levier 155 ferme l'interrup teur 175, et par la tringle 156, il met en prise l'embrayage à révolutions comme pour Pa.ddi- tion. Le moteur<B>I</B>l se met clone en marche et entraîne des arbres 88 et 58;
A<B>+</B><I>B.</I>
A<B><I>+</I></B>B.
Calculating device. The present invention relates to a positive calculator device which can in particular. be built to automatically perform addition, subtraction and multiplication of numbers. Key-operated cal euler machines are known which allow the result of the calculation to be read or which print it on a strip of paper.
By using these machines, in order to establish accounting sheets comprising at the same time a text, the data and the result of the calculation, one is obliged to write the text and the data of the calculation on the. accounting sheet,? to introduce these same data into the calculating machine then, the calculation carried out by this one, 3 to raise the result on it or on the strip of paper that it prints, and 4 to transcribe this result on the sheet of accounting or invoicing.
This method comprises twice the double operation of recording at least one number and reproducing it using the resources of the operator; the latter is therefore obliged, for each calculation, to shift his attention from the typewriter to the calculating machine, then generally to wait until the latter has provided the desired result, and finally to return to the machine to write. This process therefore involves a considerable waste of time, it is a source of errors, and it imposes undue fatigue on the operator.
Accounting machines are also known which make it possible on their own to write, often with certain restrictions such as the exclusive use of unadjusted letters, the text of the accounting sheet, the data of the calculation and its result which they show or print automatically. However, these machines are expensive and cumbersome, they do not lend themselves to routine writing jobs and are therefore generally not suitable for companies in which the accounting takes only part of the time during which they are available and occupy of the place.
The calculating device, object of the invention, is. intended to avoid these respective drawbacks of said calculating and accounting machines. It is; characterized in that it comprises a frame arranged to support a typewriter and a series of control members arranged so as to be able to be actuated by the number keys of the keyboard of this typewriter when the latter is placed on the device.
Although this device can be arranged to cooperate with a defined typewriter, possibly modified ad hoc, it is possible, thanks to the standardization of conventional typewriters, to produce forms of execution capable of cooperating with machines. to write various current models.
In the accompanying drawing, an embodiment of the calculating device, object of the invention, is shown by way of example.

The calculating device shown in the drawing is intended to be mounted under a writing machine of the current type, summarily represented and designated by 300 in FIG. 2. This machine has four rows of keys 301 to 304 for polishing the signs and letters to be struck, of which the upper one, 301, has the numbers 1 to 9 and 0 and the signs + and o / a. Each of these keys is mounted on a lever 305 articulated at the rear of the machine and actuating, via an angled lever 306, a striking lever 307.
In addition, the typewriter includes the finest row of tab keys 308, including decimal tab keys intended to set up the machine carriage for typing the first digit of a number, i.e. a key to place the first. figure in the ones column, a second to place it in that of tens, -third to place it in that of hundreds, etc., depending on whether the number to be struck has respectively one, two, three, etc.
digits before the decimal point. These keys 308 are guided in the front wall 309 of the machine and each articulated to a lever 310 whose pivot is also located at the rear of the machine. This arrangement of the keys and levers is substantially the same in all current typewriters equipped more particularly for accounting writings, machines with which the calculating device is intended to be 1, it111Sé. These common typewriters are opened from the bottom, so that the levers 305 and 310 are accessible without another from this side.
The calculating device comprises a frame 311 intended to receive, on its upper face, the typewriter 300 in a well-determined position. In this frame, ten rods 10 are guided vertically; each of them is arranged so as to come towards one of the levers 305 which correspond to the numbers 1 to 9 and 0 respectively, the rod corresponding to the number 1 carrying an arm arranged so as to come opposite the lever of the + key and the rod corresponding to the number 0 carrying an arm arranged so as to come opposite the lever of the '/ o key.
In addition, the device comprises a number of rods 312 equal to that of the tabulator keys 308 which are intended for the decimal tabulation; each of these rods 312 is arranged so as to be located against said lever 310 articulated to one of these decimal tabulation keys. The typewriter being placed on the calculating device, it is therefore possible to actuate the rods 10 by means of the number keys in row 301, and the rods <B> 312 </B> using the decimal tab keys in row 308.
The numbers struck on the typewriter are recorded in the calculating device in two ways, depending on whether it is an addition or a subtraction or a multiplicand, on the one hand, or of a multiplier, on the other hand.
In both cases, when a digit is entered by means of one of the keys 301, self. lever 305 depresses the corresponding rod 10. The movement of the latter is transmitted, by a return 11 and a rod 12, to a return 13 (Fig. 1). For the recording of numbers other than those constituting multipliers, a rod 14 is articulated to each of the references 13 which correspond to the numbers 1 to 9; for the number 0, such a rod is super read.
These rods slide in a common support 15 fixed, on the one hand, on a horizontal support plate 16 and, on the other hand, to a bar 17; the support plate 16 is mounted on a pivot 16a and the bar 17 on a pivot 17c arranged in the frame 311 along the same axis which also coincides with the common axis of the articulations of the rods 14 on the references 13 when these- these are in their rest position.
Each of the references 13 is biased by a spring 18, hooked to the fixed support 19, against a stop that this support presents. and which determines the retraction position of the corresponding rod 14. When all these rods occupy their retracted position, their front ends are located on a concave arc of a circle. A bar 20 is mounted parallel to the common rocking axis of the references 13 on a pair of cheeks 20a which can. also switch on this axis.
At the bottom of these cheeks is articulated a pusher 21 sliding in a stud 22 fixed on the support plate 16; a spring 23 which is based on this stud and which acts. on the pusher 21 tends to apply the bar 20 against the returns 13. Each time a rod 10 is depressed and advances the corresponding rod 14, the return 13 which transmits the movement to the latter therefore also moves the bar 20 and advances the pusher 21 against the force of the spring 23.
The recording of the numbers transmitted by the rods 14 is done on a drum 107 (fig. 2 and 13) comprising a certain number of elements, ten in this case, mounted on a shaft 102 and each composed of a disc 317. fixed on the shaft 102, nine pins 318 sliding radially in this disc and each provided with a lateral tenon 319 and a ring-shaped slider 320 having a groove made up of two parts 321 and 322 in the form of a arcs of a circle with the same center located on the axis of the shaft 102, but of different radius, and connected to each other by a ramp 323.
The tenons 319 of the pins 318 are engaged in this groove so that these pins exceed or not exceed the circumference of the disc 317 depending on whether these tenons are located in the part 321 or the part 322 of the groove, respectively. By rotating the cursor 320 relative to the disc 317, it is therefore possible to project a desired number of pins 318 beyond the circle of the disc, so that each element considered of the drum 107 is equivalent to a toothed wheel at number of teeth variable between 0 and 9. The rotation of each cursor 320 relative to the disc 317 is obtained by means of a tooth 324 which this cursor has.
Between the drum 107 and the area which the front ends of the rods 14 can occupy is a silent keyboard comprising a cage 52 with two walls in the form of cylinder segments, mounted so as to be able to rotate around the axis of the drum. 107. Opposite each cursor 320, nine pins 53 are mounted so as to be able to slide radially in the cage; he. there. therefore, in the device shown; ten rows of nine of these pins.
Each pin is guided, on the one hand, in the inner wall of the cage 52 and, on the other hand, by a portion of smaller diameter, in a slide 54 disposed on the outer wall of the cage, but passes through this outer wall with a certain clearance, so as to allow Lin some displacement: cnt of the slide 54 along the circumference of the cage. There is a slide 54 per row of pins 53. A spring 54a tends to rotate each smooth neck clockwise and thus maintains engaged under the outer wall of the cage 54 a shoulder 325 of each pin. of its row.
Each pin is further provided with a return spring 55.
For a determined position of the assembly which comprises the support plate 16, the bar 17, the support 15 and the rods 14 and which is articulated on the pivots 16a and 17c, the front ends of the nine rods 14 are each facing at the outer end of one of the nine pins 53 of the same row, so that when one of the rods 14 is advanced, it pushes the pin 53 which faces it and thus engages a shoulder bolster 326 of this pin under the outer wall of the cage.
This shoulder then maintains the pin in a position in which it protrudes towards the interior of the cage 52. Each eoulic, - # ze 54 is provided with a tooth 56 by means of which it can be moved relative to the cage 52 in counterclockwise, thus disengaging the second shoulder 326 from the pin from below the outer wall of the cage 52.
The spring 55 then recalls the, pin pille until its first shoulder 325 engages with this wall.
If, while a pin 53 of a row is pressed, and starting from the rest position shown in FIG. 2, the cage 52 is rotated by a determined angle (of the order of 130) in the direction of clockwise, the inserted pin will abut against the tooth 324 of the corresponding slider 320, then will cause the latter in the rotation of the cage 52 during the remainder of this rotation. The disc 317 remaining stationary, the cursor 320 then successively protrudes the pins 318.
It can be seen that the number of these protruding pins is all the greater as the pin 53 and the rod 14 which has driven it are located higher in the cage 52 and the support 15, respectively. The various elements are arranged so that, for this determined angle of rotation of the cage 52 from the position. resting, nine pins 318 are protruding when the first upper rod 14 has been advanced, eight pins 318 for the second rod, etc., and one pin for the ninth rod. The number of these projecting pins is equal to the number carried by the key 301 lowered to advance the rod 14 in question.
It goes without saying that in order not to project any pin, which must be done when key 0 of row 301 is struck, no rod 14 and therefore no connection between this key and the device described is necessary. A fixed stop bar not shown in the drawing and provided with notches giving passage to the pins 53 is arranged so as to retain the slides 54 by their teeth 56 at the very end of the rotation of the cage 52 and thus free all the gou pilles so that they return to their rest position after displacement, sliders 320. To return sliders 320 to their position.
rest corresponding to the recording of the number 0 in each element of the drum <B> 107, </B> a member 120 (fig. 13) is mounted so as to rotate freely on a bearing 108 fixed to the frame and in which the shaft 102 is supported <B> had to </B> drum. On or gane 120, a stop bar 57 is mounted so as to be able to slide in a direction parallel to the axis of the drum.
When the organ 120 is in its rest position (FIG. 13), the bar 57 is held in the position shown, to the right, by a stop with an inclined surface; in this position of the bar 57, its notches deliver not wise to the teeth 324 of the sliders 320 during the rotation of the drum.
When the member 120 rotates so as to move the bar 57 upwards, the latter disengages from said stopper and is biased to the left by a spring, not shown, so that its parts between the notches come into contact with the teeth 324 of the sliders and that these are returned to the position corresponding to 0, in which they are shown in FIG. "2. On the bearing 108, a washer 120b is fixed by a nut 120c in a position which can be adjusted after loosening this nut.
1-n return spring 120a working in torsion and fixed, on the one hand, to the washer 120b and, on the other hand, to the member 120, tends to bring this member and, therefore, the stop bar 57 down, eliminating. at the same time the play between the pieces.
To register a number of several digits, the assembly 14 # to 17 rotating on the pivots 16a and 17a is successively placed in the positions for which the front ends of the rods 14 are located opposite the various rows of key pins 53 which correspond to the positions. elements of drum 107 in which the digits of the number are to be recorded.
The position of this assembly 14 to 17 is determined by an exhaust rack 48 (Fig. 13) articulated on a fixed pivot 49 and. whose. the teeth cooperate with the stud 22, so as to prevent said pivoting. assembly in an anti-clockwise direction (fig. 13), the direction in which a barrel spring 313 tends to peel this assembly by means of a rope 314 whose end is fixed to the tail 16b of the plate 16. The rack 48 is held in engagement with the stud 22 by a return spring 50, but can be released therefrom by a rod 47, on the one hand, through the pusher 21, on the other hand.
The release rod 47 (Figs. 2 and 13) is connected by a coupling 315 to a frame 46 articulated on the frame 311 and arranged to cooperate with all the levers 310 of the decimal tab keys of the typewriter. . Each time such a key is lowered, its lever 310 causes the frame -16 to tilt which, by the coupling 315, then advances the rod 4 7 so as to release the 1st rack 48 from the corner 48a of the stud 22 and thus release said assembly 14 to 17.
Simultaneously, the lever 310 of the key in question lowers the corresponding pull 312, which is placed in the path of a stop 316 fixed on the shank 16b of the plate 16. The assembly 14 to 17 therefore pivots under the effect of the ball spring 313 until the stop 316 comes to collide with that of the rods 312 which is lowered and stops in a position which corresponds to that of the number that is to be struck. When the key 308 is released, the rods 312 and 47 return to their rest positions, but the rack 48 engages on the corner 48a of the stud 22 and maintains the assembly 14 to 17 in the position it has just obtained. take.
The cage 52 of the silent keyboard is actuated by a shaft 58 (FIG. 13), driven in an oscillatory movement, as will be seen later. On this shaft is pinned a control part 59 (FIG. 3), in which an axis 60 parallel to the shaft 58 is fitted and fixed by a screw. Another axis 61 also passes through this part 59, but can slide freely in it. On one side of the part 59, an arm 62 is freely mounted on the shaft 58.
This arm is pierced with a hole 62a. in which the axis 60 can engage without play. A compression spring 63 which rests on a ring 63a, fixed on the shaft 58 by means of a stop screw, tends to press this arm 62 ers Exhibit 59; the tension of this spring can be adjusted by moving the ring 63a. On the other side of the part 59, a second arm 66 is freely mounted on the shaft 58; this arm is also pierced with a hole 66a in which the pin 60 can engage without play, and it is pressed towards the part 59 by a compression spring 67 weaker than the spring 63.
The other end of this spring rests on a ring on the hub of a lever 70 fixed to the shaft 58. At its end, the arm 62 carries a pin 64 on which is articulated a connecting rod 82 whose end opposite is coupled to the cage 52 of the silent keyboard (fig. 2 and 13). In addition, the arm 62 is connected by a second pin 64b to another connecting rod 82a, the free end of which cooperates with a horn 16c of the support plate 16.
The lever 66 carries at its end Lin axis 64a on which is articulated a connecting rod 117 le. connecting to the element 120 for resetting the sliders of the drum 107. The lever 70 is used to control the drive mechanism for the multiplier carriage 36; this mechanism will be described later, but it should be remembered that towards the end of any calculation operation, it brings this carriage towards the mechanism described here.
In a mortise of part 59 (fig. 3) is articulated a connecting rod 69 in the forked end of which is engaged the rod of a piston 78 which slides in the bore of cylinder 80 articulated at 81 on the built. A compression spring 79 tends to move the udder 78 away from the shaft 58. In the cylinder 80 the neck smooths transversely a tenon 76 which comes out here. 77 tends to push towards the interior of the cylinder.
Beyond the fork of the connecting rod 69, the piston rod 78 has a head 78a in the form of <B> of </B> corner. arranged so as to be able to engage between the part 59 and the arm 62 to move the latter on the shaft 58, against the force of the spring 63. On the frame pivots an elbow lever 73, one arm of which is connected by a rod 75 to the tenon 76 and returned to the cylinder 80 by a spring 74.
The other arm of the lever 73 has a. hook 73b intended to retain the arm 62 in its position away from the part 59, and its end 73a is located on the other side of this part 59, so as to be able to come into contact with the arm 66.- Another angled lever 71 has on one of its arms a hook 71a intended to retain the arm 66 in its position away from the part 59, against the force of the spring 67. A spring 72 connecting a third arm of the angled lever 71 to the cylinder 80 pulls the one -Here against a fixed stop 84 and the hook 71a of the lever 71 against the arm 66.
The other arm 71b of the lever 71 carries a tenon 83 located in the path of the carriage 36 (see also FIG. 13).
At rest, the arm 62 is applied by its spring 63 against the part 59, the pin 60 that the latter carries being engaged in the hole 62a of this arm. The latter therefore takes part in the rotation of the shaft 58 as soon as the latter begins to rotate.
The cage 52 of the silent keyboard is then driven by this arm by means of the connecting rod 82, so as to bring the sliders 320 of the drum 107 into the position determined by the pressed pins 53. Simultaneously, the connecting rod 82a pulled forward (fig. 13) by the arm 62 hooks the horn 16c and brings the assembly 14 to 17 back to the position it took during the prior recording of the number in question in the silent keyboard, in its rest position in which it is shown in FIG. 13.
Finally, the part 59 pulls the piston 78 towards the outlet of the cylinder 80, by means of the connecting rod 69, and allows the tenon 76 to engage behind the piston 78, which prevents the latter from returning. When the shaft 58 changes direction of rotation and returns the part 59 to its starting position, the wedge-shaped head 78a engages between this part and the arm 62 and while the axis 60 rotates the latter. Ci until in its starting position, moves it axially against the pressure of the spring 63 until the hook 73b of the angled lever 73 engages, under the action of the spring 74, behind the arm 62 and prevents this. ci to engage with the axis 60 fixed in the part 59.
Henceforth, the arm 62 no longer participates in the oscillations of the shaft 58 and of the part 59. The piston 7 8 remains retained by the tenon 76, and the forked end of the connecting rod 69 slides freely on the piston rod. .
The return: of the arm 62 brings back to its starting position the cage 52 of the silent keyboard, as well as the connecting rod 82a which then emerges from the horn 16c, the assembly 14 to 17 being retained by the rack 48. The recording of a number in the drum 107 being thus terminated and the organs which took part in it being retained in positions in which they are neither influenced by the oscillatory movement of the shaft 58, which continues, nor in sure d 'act in any way on the drum 107, the latter can be actuated, as will be seen later, to perform.
the operations: of calculation proper, which will be described later.
These computation operations completed, the return of said members to their starting positions, including the cancellation of the number recorded in the drum 107, is caused by the carriage 36 arriving at the end of its travel to the left ( fig. 13). This carriage comes into contact with the stop 83 of the angled lever 71 and causes the latter to tilt against the action called spring 72. Until this moment, the hook 71a of this lever has retained the arm 66 out of engagement with the axis. 60 fixed in the part 59 and thus prevented this arm from participating in the oscillatory movement of the shaft 58.
Now the hook 71a is. released from the arm 66, the latter is pushed towards the part 59 by the spring 67 and engages with the axis 60 as soon as the. piece 59 during its oscillatory movement reaches its starting position. The shaft 58 continuing its oscillation, the arm 66 takes part in it and by means of the connecting rod 117 rotates the member 120 so that the latter returns the cur sors 320 to their position corresponding to zero. When the arm 66 then returns to its rest position, by returning the member 120 to its own, it comes into contact with the end 73a of the lever 73.
He then swings the latter against the action of the spring 74, releases the hook 73b from the arm 62 and removes the tenon 76 which, thereby, releases the piston 78. Under the effect of the res out 79, this piston withdraws the head 78a wedge-shaped and allows. the spring 63 to drive the arm 62 towards the part 59. The arm 62 having at this moment substantially the same angular position close to the rest position as the part 59, engages again on the axis 60 and furthermore by means of the axis 61 moves the arm 66, against the pressure of its spring 67, until the hook 71a can engage on the arm 66, under the effect of the spring 72. This engagement. occurs as soon as the carriage 36 withdraws from the stud 83.
The arms 62 and 66 then once again occupy their rest position in which they are shown in FIG. 3. The cylinder 80, which during the engagement of the head 78a between the part 59 and the arm 62 must have pivoted somewhat on the axis 81, is biased by the spring 72 against the stop 84. During the return of the arm 62 against the part 59, a tenon 65 fixed to the hub of this arm causes the stopping of the shaft 58, as will be indicated below.
Immediately after their installation by the mute keyboard, the cursors 320 are locked in their position with respect to the drum 107, and they are released just before their reset, by means of the following mechanism: 'In the' frame which supports the shaft 102 of the drum 107, a rod 134 is mounted with a smooth neck parallel to this shaft (FIGS. 7 and 13).
At the end of this rod 134 is articulated a lever 136 which pivots freely on a shoulder screw 137 fixed to the frame. In the frame is slidably supported a small shaft 141 that a spring 144, interposed between the frame and a stop ring 143 fixed on this shaft 141, tends to move away from the drum 107. Another spring 145, hooked, d 'on the one hand, the lever 136 and, on the other hand, a ring 142 fixed on the shaft 141 in an adjustable position, tends to pull this shaft towards the drum 107 and to turn this lever in the direction which corresponds to the advancement of rod 7.34 towards the carriage 36.
On the end of the shaft 141 is fixed the member 146 for blocking the sliders 320. A hook 138 pivots on another shoulder screw 139 fixed to the frame and is biased towards the lever 136 by a spring 140; this hook can engage on a nose 136a of the lever 136 to limit its rotation in this direction. This hook comprises a tail 138a disposed in the path of the cage 52 of the mute keyboard, so that the latter, coming into engagement with this tail by returning to its rest position after installation of the sliders 320, causes the switch to tilt. hook 138, so that it releases the lever 136.
This then allows the spring 145 to relax and, consequently, the spring 144 also relaxes by moving the shaft 141 in a direction such that the member 146 mounted on this shaft moves away from the drum 107 and causes the locking of the sliders 320 of this drum by means of a crenellated rod 146a which slides axially in a groove of the shaft 102.
The crenals 146b of this rod cooperate with pins 146e each sliding radially in the hub of one of the discs 317, so as to keep these pins in engagement with the hollows of an internal toothing 320a of the corresponding slider 320.
The unlocking of the sliders 320 is commanded by the carriage 36 at the same time as it reaches the tenon 83 of the lever 71 by which it causes the resetting of these sliders. To this end, a stop 135 with a lock nut is screwed facing the carriage 36 in the opposite end of the rod 134, so that its position thereon is adjustable.
When the carriage 36 pushes on this stop and moves the rod 134, it returns the lever 136 to its original position, tensioning the spring 145 which then pushes the shaft 141 against the force of the spring 144 and thus brings the member 146 back into its original position. its unblocking position canopy which the interstices of the crenels 146b face the pins 146c.
These can then be pushed inward by the teeth of the teeth 320a of each cursor 320, which allows them to rotate freely. The hook 138 hooks again on the nose 136a of the lever 136 and retains the latter in its starting position.
When it is desired to use the calculating device to carry out a multiplication, only one of the two factors to be multiplied, namely the multiplicand, is recorded in the drum 107, while the multiplier is recorded on the carriage 36. This smooth neck on rails 116 and is called to the right by a spring 332 (fig. 13).
For this purpose, no key of the decimal tabulator being actuated, the assembly 14 to 17 remains in the rest position in which it is represented in FIG. 13 and in which the rods 14 do not cooperate with any of the rows of pins 53 of the mute keyboard.
To each of the ten references 13 of which nine actuate the rods 14 is hooked a rod 24 (fzg. 1) which is guided in -tin support 25 capable of sliding vertically in fixed guides 27 and 28 and returned upwards by a spring to blade 26. A lever 25a (FIG. 13) allows the support 25 to be lowered against the action of this spring. Each rod 24 ends, at its free end, with a hook which, when the support 25 is lowered, engages with a corresponding hook of a second rod 30 guided in a fixed support 29 and articulated on a reference 31.
From each of these references 31 leaves a vertical rod 32 hooked to a corresponding lever 33 (fig. 4 and 5) for the numbers 1 to 9 and 35 for the number 0. Each of these levers is returned by a spring. 42 against a bar 44 which determines its rest position. The arrangement of the references 31 is such that the rods 32 and the viers 33 and 35 are in the order 0 (vier 35), 2, 4, 6, 8, 9, 7, 5, 3, 1. Under all the levers 33, but not under the lever 35, pass a common bar 34a which is part of a frame 34 articulated on the same fixed axis <B> 357 </B> than these levers 33 and 35.
At their opposite ends, the lever 35 and the frame 34 operate with an exhaust unit 38 (fig. 5) in the form of a square, mounted to rock on a fixed pivot 358 and biased against the lever and the lever. frame by a spring 359. This exhaust block. has a pair of pins 360 and 361 cooperating with a rack 40 fixed to the carriage 36; these pins are arranged so that during each tilting of the block 38, this carriage can escape from a tooth. of the rack 40 under the traction of its spring. 332 (fig. 13).
In the carriage 36 are slidably mounted several racks 37 (seven in this case), each provided with a spring 41 which tends to the. call back. For each rack, a hammer 39 is pivotally mounted in the carriage and biased by a spring 363 in a position in which a tenon 39a that it presents is engaged between two teeth of the rack 37 and holds the latter. This dog also has a nose 39b located over a dish. provided on the frame 34, a little behind its end part which cooperates with the block 38.
Each 1st rack 37 has a stop 37a intended to co-operate with lugs 33cc which the ends of the levers 33 carry. These lugs are arranged one behind the other in numerical order from 1 to 9, from so as to rise in the path of the stopper 37a when the corresponding lever 33 is actuated.
When a number key 301 of the typewriter is lowered and rotates the corresponding return 13, as described flat top, and the support 25 is lowered so as to couple the rods 24 and 30, the the corresponding lever 33 is actuated by the rods 24 and 30, the return 31 and the corresponding vertical rod 32. This lever 33 lowers the frame 34 which then raises the nose 39b of the hammer 39. Simultaneously, the lug 33a of the actuated lever is raised.
The tilting of the hammer 39 has the effect of releasing the pin 39a from the rack 37 and releasing this rack, so that it is withdrawn by its spring 41 until its stop 37a reaches the raised lug 33a.
When the number key 301 is released, the lever 33 falls into its rest position and also brings the frame 34 back into it, which releases the lug 33a of the stop 37u, of the 1st rack, but makes the hammer 39 fall back to its original position, so that its tenon 39a maintains the rack 37 in its new position. The spacing of the lugs 33a of the di levers 33 being equal to that of the teeth of the rack 37, the latter has been moved from its rest position by a number of teeth corresponding to the number to be recorded.
At the same time as it tilts the hammer 39 and allows it to return to its original position, the frame 34 also tilts and then allows the exhaust block 38 to return. When the latter returns, it lets the valve escape. cha riot 36 of a tooth of the rack 40, which has the effect of bringing a new mesh creation 37 opposite the row of pins 33a. The next number of the multiplier can then be typed without further, and this number will be registered in the carriage 36 by the position of this new rack, and so on until all the multiplier is registered.
When the digit to be recorded is a 0, it is the lever 35 which is actuated. Consequently, only the block 38 is tilted and advances the carriage 36 by one tooth; the frame 34, the hammer 39 and the rack 37 with which co operates this dog remain in place.
Calculation operations are performed by a motor 1I1 which drives the drum 107 using the following mechanisms Via a. reducer 85 (fig. 13), this DI motor drives part 90 of a friction coupling intended to slide in the event that the mechanism is blocked due to a disturbance or incorrect operation. On the other hand,
this coupling comprises a cone 87 which forms part of a part 86 rotating freely on a shaft 88 and on which is secured, by means of a spring plate 89, a lining 87a cooperating with the part 90, so as to be driven by it by friction.
The part 86 further comprises a ring of teeth 86x (Figs. 8 and 13) forming part of a so-called revolving clutch, intended to ensure that each time the shaft 88 is driven, it starts from a definite angular position and stops - in this same position after having made a whole number of turns. On this shaft 88 is keyed a flange 91 on which pivots a latch 92 returned to the crown 86a by a spring 92a and having a tooth 92b which can engage between those of said crown.
The cleat 92 also has a tail 92e which cooperates with a lever 93 mounted on a fixed pivot 93a. At one of its ends, this lever has a hook that is not visible in the drawing;
a rod 156 articulated to one. arms of a rocker arm 156a, the other arm of which is articulated at the opposite end of the lever 93 (fig. 8 and 13) allows the latter to rock from a position in which this hook comes to rest. place in the path described by the 92nd tail of the cleat <B> 92 </B> when the latter rotates with the flange 91, to a position in which the hook is outside this path.
Around its periphery, the flange 91 has a notch 91a in which a pawl 94 can be engaged, pressed against it for turn by a spring 94a.
g the stop, the members of this clutch are in the position shown in FIG. 8. The pawl 94 is then engaged in the notch 91a of the flange 91, and the hook of the lever 93 is engaged with the tail. <B> 92nd </B> of ta quet 92, so as to keep tooth 92b thereof out of engagement with the. crown 86a. The spring 92a is then stretched and seeks to rotate the flange 91 in the opposite direction to that of clockwise.
This rotation is however prevented by the pawl 94. When the motor drives the coupling part 86, the latter rotates, with its crown 86a, clockwise (FIG. 8) without driving the flange that 91 until, by means of the control lever 156, the lever 93 is bottomed out of engagement with the tail 92c. The ta quet 92 is then returned to the crown 86a by its spring 92a, and its tooth 92b engages between two teeth of this crown.
Therefore, the flange 91 and, consequently, the shaft 88, is driven by the part 86 and the stopper 92 in a clockwise direction.
To stop the shaft 88, the lever 93 is returned to its original position by means of the rod 156. When, during its rotation, the flange 91 almost reaches the position of FIG. 8, the tail 92c is hooked by the hook of the lever 93, so that the latch 92 pivots on the hooking point, its tooth 92b is released from the crown 86a and the spring 92a is tensioned. The flange 91 is then phis driven by the. crown 86a, and at the same time, soli notch 91a. engages the pawl 94 which maintains the flange in its stop position.
The shaft 88 is supported by a bearing 95 fixed to the frame (fig. 13). On the side of this bearing which is opposite to the flange 91, this shaft carries an eccentric flange 96 which actuates a connecting rod 97 articulated on a crank pin 97a fixed on an arm 58a at the end of the shaft 58 already mentioned, so as to print to this shaft an oscillatory movement when the shaft 88 turns.
Next to this eccentric, a crown 98 having in its circumference a single notch 98a (fig. 6) is also fixed on the shaft 88. This crown 98 is part of a one-revolution clutch used to drive a shaft. 1.00 supported coaxially in shaft 88.
This clutch comprises a flange 99 keyed to the shaft 100 and on which is articulated a cleat 170 which has a tooth 170a capable of engaging in the notch 98a of the crown 98.
A spring 170b tends to return the cleat 170 towards the circumference of the crown 98 and to maintain the tooth 170a in the notch 98a. At its posterior end, the cleat presents sui dog <B> 170th </B> which exceeds the periphery of the flange 99, so as to abut, in a determined position of the flange, against a stopper 150 sliding in its guide part 327 integral with the frame (Fig. 6 and 9). The cleat 150 is crossed by a pin 151 to which is hooked a spring 150b which recalls the cleat upwards.
A pawl 171 pulled by a rap spring pel 171a in -Lin notch 99a. of the flange 99 maintains the latter in the position shown in FIG. 6. The flange 99 being in this position and the stopper. being in its advanced position, the latter maintains the stopper 170 so that its tooth 170a is out of contact with the crown 98.
As soon as this cleat is removed Lin instant, pulls it out. 170b tilts the stopper 170, so as to apply its tooth 170a against the periphery of the crown 98 and to make it fall into the notch 98cc when the latter comes opposite it; this may only take place after an almost complete turn of the shaft 100, for example when, at the time of the withdrawal of the stopper 150, the crown 98, which turns clockwise in FIG. 6, is in the position shown.
The dog <B> 170th </B> remains clear of the cleat 150, even if the latter quickly returns to its advanced position, because the end of the cleat 150 is bevelled. Tooth 170a. once fallen into the notch 98a, the crown 98 drags the stopper 170 and, consequently, the flange 99, with a full turn. The hammer 170c then abuts against the stopper. 150 returned to its advanced position, which causes the release of tooth 170a. of the check mark 98a and, consequently, the stop of the flas that 99.
The latter is then again retained by the pawl 171.
At flange 99 est. attached another large diameter flange 99b which, in its periphery, has a notch <B> 99th </B> arranged so as to provide passage to a tenon 143a (fig. 7) of the stop ring 143 fixed to the small shaft 141 when the flange 99 is in its stop position determined by the pawl 171 and notch 99a. Consequently, in any other position of the flange 99, the flange 99b prevents the sliding of the shaft 141 from the unlocking position of the sliders 320 to the locking position, and vice versa.
The locking and unlocking of these sliders can therefore practically only take place when the shaft 100 and, consequently, the drum 107, is at a standstill, that is to say before the start and after completion, respectively, of any computation operation.
The stop catch 150 is controlled by two separate mechanisms. first lie is. intended to keep this cleat withdrawn for the duration of operations during which the shaft 100 must. make several turns and is activated automatically, as we will see later, while the second is simply used to release this cleat from the hammer <B> 170th </B> so that the tree 100 will only turn once; this second mechanism depends on a manual control device for addition and subtraction, which will also be described later.
The first control mechanism com takes a rod 147 (fig. 7, 9 and 13) slidably mounted in the frame parallel to the rod 134 which controls the slider locking mechanism 320.
This rod 147 is articulated to an arm 148 (fig. 7 and 9) fixed to a small shaft 149 which carries another arm 1.49a (fig. 6; invisible in fig. 9) in contact with the pin 151 which crosses the cleat 150 (fig. 6 and 9). When the rod 147 is moved to the right (fig. 9 and 13), it tilts the shaft 149 which, by its arm 149a, withdraws the cleat 150 against the force of the spring 150b, so that it can bind. not come into contact with the dog <B> 170th </B> of the pawl 170.
The second mechanism comprises a shaft 152 which can be actuated by said control device and which carries an arm 153 in contact with the opposite part of the pin 151. It suffices to briefly actuate the control device, so as to make turn the shaft 152 and the arm 153 which then does not wisely withdraw the latch 150 engaged against the hammer 150c of the pawl 170, to release the latter and allow the flange 99 to make one turn.
The shaft 100 further carries a pinion 101 engaged, on the one hand, with a pinion 104 rotating freely and sliding on a fixed axis 104a, on the other hand, with a pinion 105 rotating freely and sliding on an axis fixed 105a. The shaft 102 which carries the drum 107 is arranged in the extension of the shaft 100, the opposite ends of these two shafts being supported in one. same level.
The shaft 102 carries a pinion 103 having the same number of teeth as the pinion 101 and with which can. being engaged the pinion 104; on the other hand, the pinion 103 in mesh with an intermediate pinion 106 with which the pinion 105 is engaged when the pinions 103 and 104 are not engaged with each other. For this purpose, each of the pinions 104 and 105 carries at the center of its left face (fig. 13) a button behind which is engaged a tenon .; these two tenons are attached to the ends of a common lever, not shown, which can swing around a fixed vertical axis.
The control of this lever is. Made, by a coupling not shown, from a lever 328 (fig. 12) which carries a tenon 241 held by a key 240 in a position such that the pinion 104 is engaged. with pinion 103. When key 240 is lowered, it releases tenon 241; the lever 328 is then pulled by a spring 242 acting on a lever 329 engaged with another tenon 330 of the lever 328, so as to disengage the pinion 104 and engage the pinion 106 with the pinion 103, which reverses the direction of rotation of shaft 102 and drum 107.
On the other side of the drum 107, the shaft 102 is supported in the pad 108 already mentioned which carries the member 120 for resetting the sliders of the drum. On the end of the shaft 102, finally, is fixed a crank pin 109 which, during the rotation of this shaft, imparts by a connecting rod 110 and a crank pin 111 an oscillatory movement to a small shaft 112 (fig. 5 and 13 ). The latter carries an arm 113 on which a. pawl 114 having a ramp 114a by which it rests on one of the rails 116 which support the recording carriage 36 of the multiplier.
This pawl 114 is used to return to its zero position that of the racks 37 of the carriage which is located in its vertical plane. At each revolution of the shaft 1.02, the crank pin advances the pawl 114, the front end of which, thanks to the ramp 114a, descends into engagement with a tooth of the rack 37 and advances a distance corresponding to that from one tooth to the other, against the traction of the spring 41. By another tooth of the rack 37, the tenon 39a of the hammer 39 is lifted and falls behind this tooth, thus preventing the return of the rack when the pawl 11-1 is again removed.
Opposite the pawl 114; a stop 128a of an angled lever 128 articulated on a fixed lon pin 129 is located in the path of the rack 37 actuated by this pawl (FIG. 13). When this rack reaches its position corresponding to the number 1, that is to say when the drum 107 and the shaft 102 have made one revolution less and the small shaft 112 one oscillation less than the number of teeth of which the rack was moved from its zero position when saving the multiplier,
the rack comes into contact with the stop 128a. During the next revolution of the shaft 102 and the next oscillation of the small shaft 112, which returns the rack 37 to zero position, the latter tilts the lever 128, thus causing, as will be explained, the movement of the carriage 36, so as to put another rack 37 opposite the pawl 114 and. the stop 128a.
The displacement of the multiplier carriage 36 is controlled by the already mentioned lever 70, fixed on the shaft 58: On this lever is articulated a connecting rod <B> 119 </B> which carries a small roller 118 which can cooperate with the end of one of the arms of a three-arm lever 121 pivoting on a fixed journal 121a.- The lever 121 is biased against a fixed stop 125 by a -spring 124.
On a second arm of the lever 121 is slidably mounted a mo bile stopper 122, returned to the outside by a res out, not shown, and cooperating with an exhaust rack 43 fixed to the carriage 36; the teeth of this rack are shaped so that the cleat 122 can move the carriage 36 to the left, but they push the cleat back when it moves to the right.
The arm of the angled lever 128 opposite to that which carries the stop 128a can be hooked to the frame by a hook 164 in an extreme position of this lever. This hook 164 can be released by means of a manual control device for multiplication, which will be discussed later.
This same arm of lever 128 carries a button 128b engaged in a mor taise <B> 127b </B> a connecting rod 127 which is articulated in <B> 127th </B> on a lever with two arms 126; this lever pivots on a vertical axis fixed to the frame, placed under the pad 108 and, consequently, invisible in FIG. 13, and its opposite arm is articulated to the rod 147.
A spring 127a pulls on the connecting rod 127, so as to maintain the left end of the mortise 127b in engagement with the journal 128b of the lever 128; on the other hand, a spring 128c hooked to the stop 125 tends to cause the lever 128 to turn, so as to return its stop 128a towards the carriage 36 and its journal 128b - towards said end of the mortise 127b.
The end of the lever 126 on which is articulated in <B> 127th </B> the connecting rod 127 also comprises a loop (hidden by the connecting rod 127 in fig. 13) in which the end part 119a of the connecting rod 119 is guided, so that the cooperation of the ga let 118 of this connecting rod with the three-arm lever 121 depends on the position of the lever 126.
When in front of the stop 128a of the lever 128 is a rack 37 of the rack 36 which has its zero position thereon, it maintains the lever 128 in the position in which it is shown in FIG. 13, against the tension of its return spring 128c, and the connecting rod 127 and the lever 126 are also maintained in the position shown, in which the roller 118 cooperates with the lever 121.
The lever 126 maintains the rod 147 in its rest position, so that the stopper 150 remains in engagement with the hammer 170c of the stopper 170 and that the latter can therefore not drive the flange 99, the shaft 102 and drum 107.
When the calculating device is started by the manual control device for a multiplication, this device disengages the hook 164 of the lever 128. At each oscillation of the shaft 58, the lever 70 does. aloi-, advance the connecting rod 119, so that its ga let 118 swings the lever 121. The latch 122 thereof, engaged against a tooth of the, rack 43 moves the carriage 36 to the left by a corresponding distance to the spacing of the teeth of this rack 43 and brings another of the racks 37 against the stop 128a and the pawl 114.
If this rack is also in its zero position, this operation is repeated. If the mesh 37, facing the stop 128, c, on the other hand occupies a corresponding position. to a digit from 1 to 9, the spring 128c will have. rotates the lever 128, so that the stop 128a is advanced towards this rack, from the position it has in fig. 13, by a distance corresponding to. a tooth of the rack <I> 37. By </I> Therefore, the. connecting rod 127 and the front end of the lever <B> 126 </B> with the strap guiding the connecting rod 119 occupy a position which prevents the roller 118 of this connecting rod from coming into contact with the lever 12l ..
The latter therefore remains applied against its stop 125. In this position, the lever 126 also holds the rod 147 in a position such that the stopper 150 is maintained, out of engagement with the hammer 170c. , by means of the shaft 149 and the arm 149u. The ta quet 170 therefore engages with the crown 98, so that the flange 99, the shaft 102 and the drum 107 are. driven by the shaft 1.00.
In this case, the oscillations of the shaft 58 do not cause any movement of the carriage 36, but only advance, by one tooth by oscillation and therefore by revolution of the drum 107, the rack 37 which is located opposite the pawl. 114. When this rack finally passes from its position corresponding to the number 1 to its zero position, it pushes back the stop 128a. and, through lever 128, connecting rod 127, and the loop of lever 126 engages roller 118 of connecting rod 119; again during the same half-oscillation of the shaft 58, this connecting rod advances the carriage 36, as explained above.
Simultaneously, the lever 126 withdrawn by the connecting rod 127 pushes the rod 147 to the left, which releases the pawl 170 from the crown 98 and causes the stopping of the drum 107. At the end of its travel, the carriage 36 comes into contact with the stop 135 on the rod 134 and with the tenon 83 of the angled lever 71, thus causing, as explained above, the unlocking and resetting of the sliders 320 of the drum <B> 107. </B> In addition, a cleat 331 mounted on the rod 134 drives the rod 147 to the left a little beyond the position to which it has been brought back by the cooperation of the last rack 37 with the lever 128 ,
which not only keeps the cleat 150 of the clutch back at a revolution (fig. 6 and 9), but also ensures a small additional displacement of the lever 126, of the connecting rod 127 and of the lever 128. This displacement This additional release completely disengages the stop 128, c from the ends of the hooks 37 for the return of the carriage 36 and further allows the hook 164 to hook the lever 128 in this inactivity position.
The actual calculation operations and the indication of their result are carried out using a counter A of known construction placed on a carriage 336 which can move on rails not shown parallel to the axis of the drum 107 . This counter (fig. 2 and 13) comprises a certain number, eleven in this case, of wheels with ten teeth 337 each one solid with a disc 338 bearing on its periphery the figures from 1 to 9 and 0, revolving around freely on an axis 339 fixed in the carriage 336.
Each of the toothed wheels 337 meshes with a twenty-toothed wheel 185 in drag, via a pinion 340, by another pinion 341 arranged so that its teeth can engage with those of the pins 318 which are protruding on the circumference of a disc 317 of the drum 107 when these pins are in the plane of the pinion 341.
Each time during the rotation of the drum 107 - One of these pins passed opposite the pinion 341, it rotates the latter by an angle corresponding to the division of the teeth of this pinion, which then prints on the disc 338 moon rotation of a tenth of a turn, which shows in a window 342 formed in the frame 311 the next number that this disc carries. Each turn of drum 107,
the number visible in the window 342 therefore increases or decreases by a number of units corresponding to the number of pins 318 which are projecting on the disc 317 opposite the pinion 341 in question.
Each disc 317 of the drum 107 carries two teeth 319a movable in the direction of the axis of the drum and returned, by springs not shown, to a position such that they pass in the interval between two of the pins 341.
However, they can be tacky in the plane of the corresponding pinion 341 by one piece 341a mounted to rock in the frame and having two side surfaces inclined in opposite directions and capable of cooperating with the teeth 319a. Each part 341a is raised by a cam integral with the adjacent pinion 340 on the right at the moment when this pinion, by entraining the disc 338 which corresponds to it,
causes the number 0 to succeed the number 9 or the number 9 to the number 0 of this disc in the window 342. The part 341a thus raised then remains in a position such that one of its inclined surfaces pushes in the plane of the pinion 341 the tooth 319a which at the end of rotation of the drum comes into contact with it, so that this tooth rotates the pinion 341 in tenth of a turn and, consequently,
increases or decreases by one the number that the corresponding disc 338 shows in window 342, each time the number shown in this window by the adjacent disc 338 on the right has changed from 9 to 0, or from 0 to 9 respectively. Thereupon, the tooth 319a slides on the inclined surface in the opposite direction of the part 341a, which allows it to return to a not healthy plane by the interval between two pinions 341, and simultaneously the part 341a is pushed back into its lower position.
The carriage 336 is pulled to the left by a barrel spring 343; it carries on the right an exhaust rack 169 and on the left a similar rack 160. The rack 169 cooperates with a tooth 123b which has on one of its arms a lever 123 mounted to rock on a journal 123a fixed to the third arm of the three-arm lever 121 mentioned above. The opposite arm of the lever 123 rests on a pin 168a mounted on one of the arms of a three-arm lever 168 articulated on the frame.
Another arm of this lever is connected by a rod 167 to a lever 131 ft freely voting on the same fixed journal 129 as the bent lever 128 and returned by a spring 130a towards a stop 130.
A hook 165 makes it possible to retain the lever 131 in a position remote from the stop 130; like the hook 164, this hook 165 can be released by means of the control device for the multiplication. When the lever 131 is hooked to the hook. 165, it maintains the three-arm lever 168 by the link 167 in a position such that the pin 168a prevents the lever 123 from engaging with the rack 169, whatever the position of the lever 121.
However, when the lever 131 is disengaged from the hook 165 and retained by the res out 130c against the stopper 130, the pin 168a is held in a position such that at each oscillation of the lever 121, the tooth 123b is brought into engagement with the stopper 130. rack 169 to remove it, and the carriage 336 with it, by a distance corresponding to the length of a tooth of this rack. This withdrawal of the carriage 336 takes place simultaneously with the advancement to the left of the carriage. 36 which carries the racks <B> 37. </B>
To the third arm .chi lever 168 is hooked a rod 13 to which is articulated a lever 159 controlling a latch 159a, guided in a fixed support 335, so as to be released from the rack 160 of the carriage 336 when the tooth 123b is. clear of the mesh ring 169.
When the lever 1.31 is hand held against the stopper 130, the lever <B> 1.58 </B> is in a fine position such that it maintains the latch 159a engaged in the rack 160, but when the lever 1.31 is retained by its hook 165, this latch 159a is released.
The teeth of the rack 160 have the same spacing as the discs 338 of the rack A, except for the first tooth on the left 160b which is spaced two apart from the second tooth 160a. The lever 131 is brought into its hooked position on the hook 165 by a tenon 172 fixed to the carriage 36 and which comes into contact with this lever when this carriage reaches the end of its travel to the left.
For the triggering of the calculation operations, two control keys are required, one to trigger the addition operations and the other to trigger the multiplications.
The addition key, which is not itself shown in the drawing, actuates a control rod 344 (fig. 13) which cooperates with one of the arms of a lower angled lever 345 which is mounted on a fixed pivot 346. A the other arm of this lever is articulated, on the one hand, a slider 347 slidably mounted in the frame and, on the other hand, a rod 348 coupled, by a return 349, to a sliding rod 350 .
The slider 347 has a stop 351 against which is pulled, by a spring 352, a crank 353 of the shaft 152 by which the cleat 150 of the one revolution clutch can be temporarily released; as we already have. described (fig. 9 and 13). The end of the rod 350 cooperates with an arm 354 fixed on a shaft 154 rotating in fixed bearings, not shown. The other end of the shaft 154 carries an arm 355 which locks the lever 155 (fig. 8 and 13), pivoting on a fixed journal 356.
To the opposite arm of this lever 155 is articulated a rod 176 connected to the movable contact of a switch 175 which coiiunande the circuit of the motor 11. This same arm called the vier 155 also cooperates with the tenon 65 fixed to the hub of the arm 62 (fig. 3, 8 and 13) which is used to actuate the cage 52 of the silent v ier cïa. A spring 177 recalls the lever 155 against this tenon and tends to close the switch 175. Finally, the rod 156 which is used for. controlling the revolving clutch described above is also articulated to lever 155.
The multiplication key is not represented itself in the drawing either; it acts on a lever 157a (FIG. 13) to which a rod 157 is articulated. At the opposite end of this rod is articulated a lever 158 which controls a second latch 158a guided in the same fixed support 335 as the latch 159a; at rest, this lock 158a is engaged in the crankshaft 160 of the carriage 336, but when the multiplication key is lowered, it is pulled back by the lever 157a, the rod 157 and the lever 1.58.
On the other hand, the multiplication key acts on the end 163a of a lever 163 which carries a cooperating bar 163b. with the hooks 164 and 165 already mentioned, which serve to retain the levers 128 and 131; when the multiplication key is lowered, it switches the lever 163 so that its bar 163b unhooks these hooks from the levers 128 and 131 and releases the latter. At the ends 164a and 165a of said hooks, a rod 166 is hooked so as to be withdrawn when these hooks are released. The opposite end of this rod is articulated to the end of the arm 354.
When they are released by bar 163b, said hooks thus rotate arm 354 and shaft 154 as if the addition key had been lowered.
In addition to these commands intended to trigger the actual calculation operations, the calculator device comprises a few accessory control devices not shown in detail, which are actuated in a known manner from a strip removably attached to the rear. of my writing cart. This strip carries tenons which, when this carriage passes through a determined position, actuate members mounted on the calculating device.
By appropriate connections, each of these bodies is linked to one of several levers 178 grouped on a fixed axis 178a, and each of these levers controls a mechanism involved in the operations for preparing the calculations.
A mechanism of this kind controls the movement of the lever 25a which lowers the support 25 so as to engage, by their hooks, the rods 24 and 30 as the typewriter carriage advances in such a manner as the digits which will be hit subsequently fall into a column reserved for multipliers. As soon as said carriage has reached the point established by the tabulating device, it releases the lever 25a and allows the support 25 to return to its original position, the rods 24 and 30 then being released from one another.
Still other mechanisms may be provided to automatically actuate, when the carriage of the typewriter passes through certain positions, the commands described which depend on the addition, multiplication, subtraction keys. These positions of the machine carriage will preferably be those for which the last of the columns intended to receive the elements of these calculation operations leaves the location of the strike, so that these operations are triggered as early as possible.
To add, we start by recording in the drum <B> 107 </B> the first of the numbers - to add. For this purpose, we lower <B> there </B> Decimal tabulation key 308 corresponding to the position of the first digit of this number, which has the effect of bringing the assembly 14 to 17 opposite the corresponding row of pins 53 of the mute keyboard. The first digit of this number is then typed by means of the corresponding key 301, which at the same time prints this number fre on the _sheet <U> that </U> carries the carriage of the typewriter and advances the rod 14 corresponding to this figure; the latter pushes the pin 53 which is in front of it.
At the same time as this rod 14, the pusher 21 is advanced, as has already been explained. This polisher releases the rack 48 from the stud 22, which allows the assembly 14 to 1 i to escape per. evenings the effect of the spring 313 until the rod 14 which has been advanced abuts laterally against the corresponding pin 53 of the adjacent row on the right. In the meantime, the typewriter carriage has moved one interval. The key 301 which has been actuated rises under the effect of its output 18, so that it releases the corresponding rod 10.
The spring 23 then withdraws the pusher 21, thus allowing the rack 48 to return against the stud 22; due to the displacement of the assembly 14 to 17 which has occurred in the meantime, it is the tooth adjacent to that previously engaged with this stud which is placed so as to receive it. At the same time as the pusher 21, the advanced rod 14 which held the assembly 14 to 17 is also withdrawn in its rest position, so that this assembly is released and undergoes a small displacement under the effect of the spring 313, the stud 22 then abuts against said tooth of the rack. Rods 14 are now facing the next row of pins 53.
The next number is then typed, which is printed on the sheet to the right of the previous one, and at the same time the pin 53 of this new row which corresponds to the number fre struck is inserted by the corresponding rod 14. The carriage of the. typewriter again moving one interval, and 14-17 seemingly escaping. the length of a tooth of the rack 48, these elements are in place for striking the third digit. This is continued until all the digits of the number in question are printed on the sheet carried by the carriage of the typewriter and the pins 53 corresponding to these digits are driven into the cage 52.
The addition key is then actuated, which has the effect, on the one hand, of removing for an instant the cleat 1.50 of the clutch at. one revolution, thus releasing the latch 170, and, on the other hand, to release the lever 155 from the te i: on 65. This lever is then returned by its spring "177 in the direction of clockwise (fig. 13); in this movement, it closes the circuit of motor 1I by means of the rod <B> 176 </B> and switch 175, and by means of rod 156, it releases lever 93 from cleat 92, thus engaging the revolving clutch (fig. 8). The engine M then starts and, by this clutch, drives the shaft 88.
By its eccentric 96 and the connecting rod 97, this shaft 88 imparts to the shaft 58 the oscillating movement for which the latter is intended. The cleat <B> 170 </B> having just been released by the cleat 150, the shaft 88 makes one full turn and the shaft 58 a full swing before the cleat <B> 170 </B> engages the crown 98 and the shaft 100 is driven in the rotation of the shaft 88. During this complete oscillation of the shaft 58, the already described play of the arms 62 and 66 ( fig. 3) first rotate the.
cage 52 of the silent keyboard to bring the cur sors 320 of the drum 107 in the position corresponding to the number struck and the pins 53 pressed in, and brings the assembly 14 to 17 back to its rest position. Towards the end of its rotation, the cage 52 brings the teeth 56 of the slides 54 against a fixed stop not shown in the drawing, which retains these slides. so that the pins 53 are all released and return to their starting position when the cage finishes its rotation.
Then, the cage 52 also returns to its rest position by actuating the device shown in FIG. 7 which, at. in turn, move it. crenellated rod 146a (fig. 13) and locks the sliders 320.
This revolution of the shaft 88 completed, the latch 170 engages with the crown 98, so that on the following revolution, this shaft drives the shaft 100 which, through the gear 101, 104, 103 and the shaft 102, makes a revolution of the drum 107. Therefore, the pins 318 which have. been placed and are held in projection on the cir conference of the discs 317 by the sliders 320 rotate the discs 338 by means of the toothed wheels 341, 340, 185 and 337 of angles such that, from their starting position in which the number 0 of each disk appeared in window 342, these disks now show in this window the digits corresponding to those of the number which was struck.
During its two complete oscillations corresponding to these two revolutions of the shaft 88, the shaft 58, by means of the lever 70, of the connecting rod 119, of its roller 118, of the three-arm lever 121, of its cleat 122 and the rack 43, has brought back towards the tenon 83 of the lever 71 the carriage 36 which carries the racks 37. The latter do not cooperate with the angled lever 128, because they are kept apart from the latter and the lever 128 itself is kept hooked by the hook 164 which has not been released.
Likewise, the lever 131 is kept hooked by the hook 165, so that the tooth. 123b of lever 123 cannot engage with crankshaft 169 and carriage 336 of counter t1 remains stationary.
The carriage 36 carrying the racks 37 is in its extreme left-hand position, in which it is shown in FIG. 13. With each oscillation of the three-arm lever 12: 1, the latch 122 thereof, in engagement with the last right tooth of the rack 43, further pushes the carriage 36 to the left and abuts the latter against the tenon 83 of the lever 71, thus freeing the hook 71u from the arm 66.
Although it is thus released by the hook 71a, the arm 66 cannot be moved to the right by the spring 6 7 during the outward phase of the first oscillation of the shaft 58, because the spring 63, including the. pressure is transmitted to the arm 66 by the arm 62 and the axis 61 and which tends to press the arm 66 to the left, is stronger than the spring 67 and keeps the latter compressed.
During the return phase of this first oscillation of the shaft 58, as the carriage 36 withdraws from the non-83, the hook 71a comes back into engagement with the arm 66, while the wedge-shaped head 78a engages. between the part 59 and the arm 62 and moves it against the pressure of the spring 63, as has already been explained. During the forward phase of the second oscillation of the shaft 58, the lever 121 pushes the carriage 36 again against the lug 83, which releases the hook 71a from the lever 66.
This time, the force of the spring 63 is no longer transmitted by the arm 62 to the axis 61; the arm -66 is then pushed towards the part 59 by the spring 67 and during the return phase of this second oscillation of the shaft 58, the pin 60 enters the hole 66a of the lever 66, so that the latter is driven by the part 59 and takes part in the third oscillation of the shaft 58.
During this third oscillation, the carriage 36 no longer comes into contact with the lug 83, because since its displacement by the spring 67, the arm 66 prevents the hook 71a. to engage and, consequently, the lever 71 to return to its rest position.
At the end of this third oscillation of the shaft 58, the arm 66 engages the end 73c of the lever 73 and returns all the parts to their rest position.
The drum <B> 107 </B> stopped at the end of the second turn of shaft 88, due to the fact that the cleat 150, returned to its forward position, at that moment released the cleat 170 of the crown 98 and that the latter is then no longer trained. Simultaneously with the movement of the tenon 83, the carriage 36 comes into contact with the stop 135 and pushes back the rod 134 which then causes the sliders 320 to unlock. These are returned to their position corresponding to zero by the member 120, which is actuated by arm 66 during the third oscillation of shaft 58.
The arm 62, which during this moves axially on this shaft; already exposed, rocks lever 155 against the force of spring 177, thereby separating the contacts of switch 175 and returning lever 93 of the revolving clutch to the path of tail 92c of cleat 92. Hence, , engine 111 is. stopped and the shaft 88 disengaged when it reaches its rest position. The arm 62, by its tenon 65, blocks the lever 155 in its starting position. All the components of the calculating device are thus found in their original position, with the exception of counter A, in which the number entered remains recorded and appears in window 342.
We can now hit in the same way a second number to add to the first. After the transfer of this second number from drum 107 to counter A, the latter will indicate in window 342 the sum of the two numbers struck, since its discs 338 are each rotated from their position corresponding to the digits of the first number. and no longer from the position corresponding to zero, and they describe, during this rotation, angles corresponding to the digits of the second number.
Other numbers can be added one after another in the same way; counter A will then indicate the sum of all the numbers struck and each transferred to the counter after depressing the add key. It should be noted that, the assembly 14 to 17 and the cage 52 having returned to their starting positions as soon as this key has been pressed, it is not necessary to wait until the transfer of each number has taken place. place to start typing the next number, possibly preceded by a text, which saves significant time.
To subtract a number from another number previously struck, or from the sum of several numbers recorded in counter A, the procedure is the same as for addition. of this number, except that, simultaneously, with the addition key, the subtraction key> is pressed. 240. Ceei has the effect of disengaging the pinion 103 from the pinion 104 and bringing the pinion 105 into mesh with the pinion 106, which itself meshes with the pinion 103.
Therefore, the rotation of the drum 107 is in the opposite direction to that in which this drum rotates during addition, and rotates the discs 338, so as to decrease each figure appearing. in window 342, of as many units as indicated by the corresponding digit of the number to be subtracted.
When the addition or subtraction is complete, the sum shown in window 342 is keyed in and subtracted as described. If there has been no reading or typing error, then the 338 discs of the counter must all have the position corresponding to the number 0. Better than by simple reading, this is checked by pressing a key. of the typewriter which prints an asterisk next to the amount transcribed.
For this star key, the calculator device comprises the following control mechanism (fig. 2) Under the lever which carries this key of the typewriter, a rod, not shown, whose longitudinal displacement causes a shaft 262a to tilt a pair arm 262 is mounted so as to slide vertically in the frame of the calculating device. Each of the arms 262 carries a slide 262b guided in a part 334 secured to the frame, these slides being interconnected by a blade 262e.
Each of the wheels 185 has two slots 261 diametrically opposed and deeper than the hollows between its teeth; these slots are arranged so that. one or the other of them is in front of the blade <B> 262nd </B> when the disc 338 dragged by this wheel has the number 0 in the window 342. Consequently, <B> he </B> All disks 338 must have the number 0 in this window so that the blade 262c can engage in the slots 261 and the star key can be lowered.
If not. not possible, the reset of the counter was incomplete, ie the sum was incorrectly transcribed; the operator is therefore obliged to verify this transcription, it is worth being able to type the asterisk which, on the accounting sheet, serves as a witness for the correct transcription.
To perform a multiplication, we first hit the multiplicand in the same way as a number would go into an addition. This multiplicand remains recorded in the silent keyboard 52. Then, the multiplier is typed, at the place on the accounts sheet provided for this purpose.
When the carriage of the typewriter is brought into the corresponding position, its slide acts on the lever 25a, so as to lower the support 25 and thus engage the rods 24 and 30; on the other hand, the assembly 14 to 17 remains in its extreme right position, so that the rods 14 do not come into contact with the pins 53 when they are advanced, and that the recording of the xnalti- plicande in the mute keyboard 52 is not changed.
The multiplier is therefore registered in the manner described in the carriage 36, owing to the fact that the racks 37 are placed there in positions corresponding to the digits struck. The carriage 36 is held in position by the exhaust device shown in fig. 5, comprising the rack 40 and the tooth 360, and moves to the right according to the multiplier struck.
The multiplication key is then pressed, which has the effect of disengaging the worm 158a from the rack 160, the hook 164 of the lever 128 and the hook 165 of the lever 131. The latter is then pulled against the stop 130 by its spring 130a and, by the link 167, swings the three-arm lever 168 so as to engage the tooth 123b with the rack 169 and to engage the latch 159a with the rack 169, by the rod 7.73 and the lever 159.
By the rod 166, this operation also causes the shaft 154 to tilt, which frees the arm 355 .du lever 155, which is then biased by its spring 177; by rod 176, this lever 155 closes switch 175, and by rod 156, it engages the revolving clutch as in the edition. Engine <B> I </B> The clone starts up and drives trees 88 and 58;
however, the rod 152 not being actuated, the latch 150 keeps the latch 170 out of engagement with the crown 98 and the shaft 100 and the drum 107 are not driven. At the first complete oscillation of the shaft 58, the arm 62 rotates the cage 52 of the mute keyboard and thus brings the sliders 320 of the drum 107 in the position corresponding to the multiplicand. By returning to its starting position, the cage 52 causes the locking of the sliders 320 and the return to their rest position of all the pins 53, as in the case of the addition. Simultaneously, the lever 70 pushes forward and then withdraws the connecting rod 119.
As has already been described, the position of that of the racks 37 of the carriage 36 which is located at this moment in front of the stop 128u of the lever 128 determines what effects this movement of the connecting rod 119 produces. In this case, at the start of this multiplication operation, it is the first rack 37 from the left, the position of which represents the last digit of the multiplicateïzr (ie the units if the multiplier is a whole number) which is in sight of stop 128a.
If this number is a 0, said rack maintains the lever 128 in the position shown. The roller 118 of the connecting rod 119 therefore engages with the three-arm lever 121 and causes the latter to tilt so that it simultaneously pulls the length of a tooth, the rack 43 of the carriage 36 to the left by the cleat 122, and the rack 169 of the carriage 336 to the right by the lever 123 and its tooth 123b.
During this time, the drum 107 is not driven. The lever 126 also remains stationary. The result of this operation is therefore that none of the discs 338 of the counter g has left its position corresponding to the number 0, but that the carriage 336 carrying this counter is moved to the right by the length of a tooth of its creating mesh 169, thus putting aside the tam bour <B> 107 </B> its last digit, which will remain 0.
If, on the other hand, the last number of the multiplier is different from 0, the rack 37, the position of which corresponds to this number, allows the lever 128 to tilt under the effect of its spring by putting the roller 118 out of reach of the lever. with three arms 121 and by disengaging the cleat 150 from the cleat 170 of the one-revolution clutch, as explained above. From the second turn of the shaft 88, the shaft 100 is therefore coupled to it due to the fact that the cleat 170 drives the crown 98.
The drum 107 and the arm 109 therefore begin to rotate, the latter causing the first rack 37 to advance by the length of one tooth at each turn until the latter is in contact with the stop 128a of the lever 128 and brought it back to the position it would have occupied if the last digit of the multiplier had been 0. In doing so, the rack 37 causes the return of the cleat 150 in the path of the hammer 170c of the cleat 170; the latter is therefore only trained until the completion of the turn started. The drum 107 then made as many turns as the rack 37 had teeth withdrawn.
At each of these turns, he drove the 338 discs as for the addition of the number recorded on him, that is to say, he has, on counter A, multiplied this number by the figure indicated by the initial position of the first rack <B> 37. </B> After stopping the drum 107, the shaft 58 makes a complete oscillation, as in the case where this last digit is 0, the carriages 36 and 336 being thus withdrawn from the length of a tooth, the first to the left and the second -to the right.
In the following turn, a similar cycle of operations begins, controlled by the second rack 37, the position of which corresponds to the tens digit of the multiplier. The 336 counter cart !! being now in a position such that the row of pins 318 of the drum 107 which correspond to the -units of the multiplicand is in front of the element of the counter corresponding to the tens, it is the tenfold of the multiplicand which is carried over to this counter at each revolution of drum 107 and added to the product of the previous partial multiplication.
This cycle completed, the carriages 36 and 336 are again withdrawn by the length of a tooth of their respective racks 43 and 169, then a new similar cycle takes place, in which the drum 107 makes as many turns as indicated by the figure represented by the position of the third rack 37, while the carriage 336 is in a position such as the row of pins 318 indicating. the units of the multiplicand is in front of the counter element corresponding to the cents.
It is therefore the hundredfold of the product of this partial multiplication which is carried over to the counter.
These cycles continue until the product <B> of </B> multiplicand by the first digit of the multiplier has also been transferred to the counter. The remaining racks 37 of the carriage 36 being in their position corresponding to the number 0, this carriage 36 is then withdrawn to the left, and the carriage 336 of the counter to the right, without the drum 107 being yet driven, until 'so that the carriage 36 abuts against the stops 33 and 135, thus stopping the operations, as in the case of an addition. Simultaneously,
the tenon 172 of the carriage 36 comes into contact with the lever 131 and the ra leads into the position in which it is hooked by the hook 165.
Therefore, by the connecting rod <B> 167 </B> and the three-arm lever 168, the tooth 123b of the lever 123 is released from the rack 169, so that the counter carriage 336 escapes under the effect of the spring 343 which returns it to the left, and at the same time, the latch 159a is removed by the lever 168, the rod 173 and the lever 159. The latch 158a having returned in place when the operator released the multiplication key, the carriage stops when the first tooth 160b of the rack 160 abuts against this lock 158a.
The digits with which one operates must always be entered with two decimal places after the decimal point, the carriage 336 of the counter A is then in the correct position for the reading of the result, of the multiplication, that is to say in position such that the digits of disks 338 corresponding to the third and fourth decimal of the product remain hidden to the right of window 342.
So that the carriage 336 only returns to its starting position in which it is shown in FIG. 13, the multiplication should have been done with a single digit multiplier, so that the carriage 336 has only moved to the right one interval and the first tooth 160b has not yet exceeded .the lock 158a. When the carriage is released by tooth 123b, it is then the second tooth 160a which would abut against the advanced latch 158a.
Immediately thereafter, when the lever 131 has reached its position for engaging with the hook 165, the latch 159a also comes back into engagement with the rack 1.60. We can then read the product indicated by counter A, and as in the case of the result of an addition, it is typed in its place on the tally sheet, the subtraction key is pressed to reset the counter, and we hit the star key to check that the counter has returned to zero. Calculating a percent discount is done the same way as a multiplication.
We hit the multiplicand, which can be the result of a previous operation, like a number to enter in an addition. Then, the carriage of the typewriter is pushed into a position corresponding to a neutral column, and a key, not shown, which is multiplied by hand, is actuated; this key lowers a part 25b coupled to the support 25 and, consequently, engages the rods 24 and 30, as if this support were lowered under the control of the carriage of the typewriter by means of the slide thereof and the lever 25a, in the manner already described .about the multiplication automatically controlled by said strip.
To obtain directly, without having to use a division by 100,, the amount of the discount indicated in percent, press the o / o key on the typewriter. This key acts, like the 0 key, on the rod 10 corresponding to the number 0 (fig. 1). Therefore, the multiplier carriage 36 moves one interval to the right without the first rack 37 on the right being moved. The digits of the percentage of the discount are then typed in succession, expressed in a whole number (we will speak of decimals later), which sets up the racks 37, as during an ordinary multiplication.
The multiplication key is then pressed, which has the effect of triggering the multiplication operations in the manner already described, starting with the last digit struck by the number indicating the percentage of the discount. Finally, the carriage 36 comes to the position for which the first crankcase 37 on the right, which has not been moved because it is the 1 / o key which has been lowered first. facing the end 128a of the lever 128.
This rack 37 being a little longer than the others, it swings the lever 128 so that it is hooked by the hook 164; in this position, it maintains the roller 118 of the connecting rod 119 in engagement with the lever 121, so that the latter still moves the carriage 36 one üt- tervalle to the left. Lever 131, on the other hand, still remains free, so that at the same time that carriage 36 is moved to the left, carriage 336 is moved to the right. It is only after this movement of the two carriages that the tenon 172 of the carriage 36 engages with the lever 131 and returns it to its hooked position.
Through rod 173, latch 159a is then withdrawn, so that carriage 336 escapes to the left until tooth 160b of rack 160 abuts against latch 158a. Consequently, the carriage 336 is stopped in a position such that the digits indicated by the two discs 338 on the far right are to the right of the window 242 and remain invisible. The visible number therefore directly indicates the amount of the discount and no longer has to be divided by 100, although the percentage of the discount has been entered as a whole number.
If you want to calculate a fine discount, the rate of which is indicated by a percentage - to two decimal places, you first enter the whole number that this percentage includes. Then, when striking the comma of this percentage, we lower a special key which, by a lever 174, advances a latch 174x offset two intervals to the right with respect to the latch 158a, then we strike the two decimal places of the percentage.
The calculation having been carried out by the machine, as above, the carriage 336 will be recalled to the left only until the tooth 160b of its rack 160 abuts against the latch 174a; the carriage therefore stops in a position such that the last four digits of the product recorded at counter A are hidden to the right of window 242.
This product being a figure with four decimal places when considering the percentages of the discount rate as transferred, and with six decimal places when considering these percentages. like hundredths, it is again. the amount of the discount itself, which appears with two decimal places in window 242.
If you want to calculate, instead of the amount of a discount to be deducted, an amount already increased by a certain percentage increase of less than 10%, you will first lower the + key (which introduces the factor 1 in carriage 36), then the / o key (introducing the factor 0 in the following place as for the calculation of a discount to be deducted) and finally the percentage rate will be entered. The result appearing in window 242 will then be the increased amount.
To allow the addition and subtraction of the results of several consecutive calculation operations performed in the manner described, a second counter B is provided, into which each sum indicated in the counter A can be transferred when resetting that counter. -this.
This counter B (fig. 2, 11 and 13), arranged under a window 272 of the frame, also comprises a series of disks 270, in this case eighteen, divided into two groups B1 and B2 of nine disks each, each disc being coupled to a pinion 192 with ten teeth and rotating freely on an axis 271 parallel to the axis 339 of the counter A and supported at its ends by two vertical flanges 208 and 209, which are kept parallel and at an equal distance l 'from each other by spacer rods.
This assembly constitutes a carriage which can slide longitudinally on two shafts 186 and 190, in order to be able to transfer the sum indicated at counter A on the disks 270 of any one of groups B1 and B2 of counter B. Each of the pinions 192 meshes with another pinion 191 of ten teeth also.
Depending on the direction in which the discs 270 of counter B are to be driven by the twenty-tooth wheel 185 of the gear train driving the corresponding disc 338 of counter A, it is one or a-Liter of sprockets 191 and 192 which must be engaged with this wheel 185.
The carriage of the counter B having to be able to be raised or lowered for this purpose, the shafts 186 and 190 on which it slides are supported by two flange bolsters 188 and 189 pinned on an axis 193 which can be raised or lowered. This axis 193 is carried by heavens arms 194 pinned on a shaft 196, which turns on two journals <B> 197 </B> and 198 screwed respectively into fixed trays 199 and 200 integral with the frame. Springs 206 and 207 attached, on the one hand, to these fixed plates and, on the other hand, to the flanges 189 and 188 respectively,
tend to keep these flanges and the counter B carriage in an elevated position.
On the plate 200 is fixed, by a support 250, the cylinder of an air brake 249, the piston of which is connected to a pin 251 mounted on the flange 188. This air brake serves to damp the movement of the assembly. supported by the arms 194 and the axle 193 when it is returned to its upper position by the springs <B> 206 </B> and 207.
The carriage constituted by the counter B and the flanges 208, 209 is returned to the right by a spring 254 stretched between the flange 209 and the fixed plate 200. The cylinder 252 of another air brake, which serves to damp the movement ment of this carriage when it is returned by the spring 254, is fixed to the flange 188, while the rod 253 of the piston of this brake is connected to the flange 208 of the carriage.
The shaft 190 on which this carriage slides is held between the flanges 188 and 189 by stop rods 201 and 202 and carries at its left end (fig. 11) a pinion with ten teeth 205.
On the shaft 190 is fixed a drum 190u opposite which can be placed either one or the a-Liter of groups B1 and B2 of meter B. For each pinion 191 of the Cree group in question, the drum 190a carries a pair of teeth 190b movable in the direction of the axis of the drum. At rest, these teeth are maintained, by return springs (not shown), in planes intermediate to those of the pinions 191, so as not to come into engagement with them.
However, a piece 191u having two surfaces inclined in opposite directions small come to be placed in the course of each tooth 190b, so as to be deflected axially during the rotation of this drum, so that it comes into engagement with the gear 191 adjacent to the right and rotate it a tenth of a turn.
This part 191a is controlled by a cam integral with the adjacent pinion 192 on the right, so as to be ready to cooperate with the tooth 190b in question after each time that, during the rotation of this pinion 192 and of the disc <B> 270 </B> corresponding, the number presented by this disk in the window 272 goes from 9 to 0 or vice versa. When, during the rotation of the shaft 190, the tooth 190b passes over the inclined surfaces of the part 191a thus placed, it therefore rotates the adjacent disk 270 on the left, so as to increase or decrease, respectively one unit, the number presented by this disc.
So that this change is done in the sense of an increase when the number presented by the right hand say 270 goes from 9 to 0, and of a decrease when it goes from 0 to. 9, it is necessary to ensure that the shaft 190 turns in the corresponding cens.
For this purpose, the rotation of the shaft 190 is controlled by the arm 66 which serves, as has already been explained, to reset the cur sors 320 of the drum 107 to zero. This arm comprises an extension not shown in FIGS. . 3 and 13, at the end of which is articulated a connecting rod 233 (fig. 12) which connects it .à an arm 234 pinned to a countershaft 247 (fig. 10, 11 and 12). At its left end, this shaft carries another arm 248, on which a connecting rod 236 is articulated, the other end of which is integral with a journal 273 slidably guided in a slot 274 of a support 275 integral with the frame.
This journal also carries a piece 225 in the form of a jaw having two mesh cranks 226 <B> 227 </B> capable of engaging pinion 205. When arm 66 and countershaft 247 rotate counterclockwise (fig. 12), connecting rod 236 pushes towards the rear (to the left in fig. 12) part 225, fat-.
so turn the pin 205 in the same direction if it is engaged with the upper rack 226, and clockwise if it is in engagement with the lower first rack 227 of part 225 On the journal 273 is further articulated a connecting rod 237 which, at its opposite end, has a slot 237a through which passes a shoulder screw 238a fixed in a screw 238 tilting on a fixed journal 238b.
At the opposite end of this lever is articulated another connecting rod 239 which connects it to the lever 328 controlling the reversal of the direction of rotation of the drum 107. So that the pinions 191, if the carriage is in its high position, or the pinions 192 if it is in its low position, can be engaged and disengaged with the corresponding wheels 185, the assembly supported by the shaft 193 can tilt around the axis thereof.
By ime connecting rod 220 (FIG. 10), the flange 189 is connected to an arm 221 wedged on a shaft 276 which rotates freely in the frame and which also carries a lever with two arms 218, one of which carries a tenon. 219 which cooperates with the stop 277 of the lever 278 of a control button 217.
A spring 224 tends to tilt the lever 218 and, therefore, the assembly carried by the shaft 193 in the direction such that the pinion 191 or 192 is engaged with the wheel. <B> 185. </B> However, when the control key 217 is not actuated, the stop 277 stops the tenon 219 of the lever 218 in a position such that said pinion remains out of engagement with the wheel 185. The other arm of the le vier 218 esL provided with a roller 222 which cooperates with the disc 99 of the clutch at a revo lution described more hala.
On its face opposite to that visible in FIG. 6, this disc comprises a groove 223, one of the sides of which forms, with one part of the periphery of this disc, a cam with the periphery of which the roller 222 is in contact under the effect of the spring 224 which acts on the lever 218. During the rotation of the disc 99, this roller can engage in the groove 223 when the stop 277 is disengaged from the pin 219, but when the roller comes out of the groove to regain the perimeter of the disc, it returns the lever 218 to a position such that the stop 277 retains the pin 219 as soon as the key 217 returns to its rest position.
Another key 268 (fig. 12 and 12A) articulated on a tenon 269 fixed in one of the arms 194 makes it possible to tilt the latter downwards and thus to lower the shaft 193 with the assembly that it has. door, thus placing the pins 192 opposite the wheels 185.
A pawl 246, articulated by a pin 279 on the fixed plate 199 and returned to the tenon 269 by a spring 280, has two notches 281 and 282 to retain this tenon and, consequently, said assembly, one, 281, in its upper position and the other, 282, in its lower position.
A fishplate 245 slidably mounted on this pawl cooperates with a tenon 244 fixed to an arm 243 integral with the countershaft 247; Each time that this shaft ends its oscillation counterclockwise, the tenon 244, coming into contact with the splice 245; swings the pawl 246 so as to disengage it from the tenon 269 and thus allow the return of said assembly in its upper position.
Yet another control key 228 (fig. 12) serves to engage the lower rack 227 of part 225 with pin 205. The lever 228a of this key is coupled to an elbow rod 229 which rests on a pin. fixed tenon 230 and which comprises the foot 229a on which the part 225 rests.
This connecting rod also has a hook 231 by which it hooks to the tenon 230 when it is raised by means of the key 228 when the latter is lowered, thus maintaining the hook 227 in engagement with the pinion 205.
The hook 231 is disengaged from the tenon 230 at the time when a stop 232, provided on the underside of the part 225, comes into contact with the end of the foot 229a and pushes the latter back during the movement of the part 225 to the right (fig. 12) under the effect of the movement of the arm 66. The connecting rod 229 being thus released, falls if the key 228 is released, and the part 225 then tilts so as to put the rack 227 out of engagement and the rack 226 engaged with the pinion 205.
The key 228 is coupled, in a manner not shown, to the mechanism controlled by the key 217, so as to put, when it is lowered, the pinion 191 in engagement with the wheel 185.
To make it possible to check the setting to zero of the disks 270 of the counter B, a pawl 283 (fig. 2 and 13) is mounted to rock in a fixed support 284 opposite each of the pins 192 and returned towards the latter by a res comes out 285. Those of the teeth of the pinion 192 which are in engagement with the pawl 283 when the corresponding disk 270 shows the number 0 at the window 272 have a notch 192a. which allows the pawl 283 to engage further into the pinion 192 than when the latter is in another position.
A common rectangular plate 255 sup carried by two arms 286 pivoting on fixed pins 287 is pulled towards the back of the oliquets 283 by two springs 288. In front of this plate, a key 259 is guided vertically; this key carries a tenon 260 which cooperates with the plate 255. When all the pawls 283 are engaged in said notch 192a of the pinions 192, the plate 255 is biased rearward by its springs 288 in a position in which it delivered not wise at tenon 260.
However, as soon as any of the disks 270 is not in the position in which it indicates the number 0, the corresponding pawl 283 cannot be fully engaged and retains the plate 255 in the path of the tenon 260. The key 259 therefore cannot be lowered. The fact that this key can be lowered indicates on the other hand that all the discs 270 are in their position 0.
The key 259 can be connected, by means not shown, to the star key or another conventional sign key of the typewriter, so that this sign can only be struck if key 259 is released. by plate 255; this allows this sign to appear on the accounting sheet as a witness to the resetting of counter B.
To transfer a sum from counter A to counter B, this sum is read on counter A and typed, as in the case already described, where this sum must then be canceled in counter A. However, instead of l 'cancel purely and simply by pressing the 240 key which causes the. subtracting this sum, therefore resetting counter A to zero, key 217 is first pressed which causes counter B to be brought into relation with counter A.
Three cases should be distinguished: In the first, the sum to be subtracted and canceled in counter A must be added to that recorded in counter B, which will be indicated abbreviated by the notation -A + B. In the second case, which will be designated by <I> -A -B, </I> the sum to be subtracted and canceled in counter A must be subtracted from that recorded at counter B.
Finally, in the third case, designated by + A -B, it is the sum recorded in counter B which must be subtracted and canceled in it, and transferred to counter A to be added there to that which is there. recorded.
* In the case of -A <I> + B, </I> the assembly comprising the compeur B is held in its upper position by the springs 206 and 207, so that it is the pinion 191 which engages with the wheel 185 after the key 217 has been lowered.
As soon as the disc 99 is driven by the motor i11 and begins to rotate the drum 107, the roller 222 engages in the groove 223 of this disc, which has the effect of causing said assembly to tilt so as to. engaging the gears 191 with the wheels 185 and rotating the discs 270 of the counter B in synchronism with the discs 238 of the counter A, but in the opposite direction. The sum subtracted in the counter A is therefore added in the counter B.
This transfer completed, the roller 222 leaves the groove 223, and said assembly returns to its rest position, which puts the pinions 191 out of engagement with the wheels 185.
In the case -A -B, the key 268 is pressed, which has the effect of lowering said assembly to its lower position. By its check mark 282 which locks the pin 269, the pawl 246 then maintains this assembly - in this position, the transfer of the sum from counter A to counter B takes place as in the case -A -1- B, except that it is now the pinions 192 which engage with the wheels 185. As a result, the discs 270 of the counter B rotate in the same direction as the corresponding discs 238 of the counter A. The sum subtracted and canceled in this itself. ci is therefore subtracted in counter B.
We saw above that at the end of any calculation operation, the lever 66 performs a reciprocating movement to reset the cursors 320 of the drum 107 to zero by means of the member 120. this movement, which obviously also occurs after the cancellation of the sum in the counter A, the arm 66 oscillates the countershaft 247 by means of the connecting rod 233. The tenon 244 then comes into contact with the splice 245 and by it releases the pawl 246 from the pin 269.
The assembly supported by the arms 194 is then returned to its upper position by the springs 206 "and 207. When the tenon 264 is withdrawn during the return of the lever 66 to its rest position, it is the notch 281 of the pawl 246 which engages on the tenon 269 of the arm 194 and which hand holds said assembly in its upper position, ready for a transfer: of the type -A <B> + </B> <I> B. </I>
Both in the case -A -I- B and in the case -A = B, the oscillation -of the countershaft 247 causes the journal to move - to the left and then turn back to the right (fig. 12) the journal 273 and the connecting rod 237. At the end of its travel to the left, this connecting rod switches the lever 238 which then, by the connecting rod -239, withdraws the lever 328 against the force of the spring 242 and returns it to the position for which the pin 104 engages with the pinion -103.
The key 240 then returns to its rest position in which it maintains the lever 328 in its own; by the post 241_ thereof. Drum drive gear 107 is then ready to rotate the drum in the addition direction.
In the case + A-B, the sum indicated on the counter -B is entered so as to record it in the drum <B> 107 </B> of counter A, then the key 228 is pressed, which has the effect of lifting the lower rack 227 and engaging it with the pin 205, by means of the connecting rod 229. The shaft 1.90 and the drum 190a then turn in the opposite direction to that for the case <B> <I> -A + </I> </B> B.
The drum 107 rotates this time in the direction corresponding to an increase in the number recorded in the counter A, and the drive of the counter B is effected by engagement of the pins 191 with the wheels 185; as in the case <I> -A </I> + <I> B, </I> the disks 270 of the counter <I> B </I> the disks 238 of counter A turn in the opposite direction, but these directions of rotation are opposite to those in which these disks turn in the case -A <B> <I> + </I> </B> B. Therefore, the sum added in counter A is subtracted into counter B..
As soon as the pins 318 of the drum 107 have finished their action on the pinions 341 and, consequently, on the discs 338 and 270, and again before the pins 319a come into engagement with these pinions 341 to carry out the decimal transfer in the counter A, the counter B. Is separated from the counter A and returns to its rest position. While the sliders 320 of the drum 107 are reset to zero by means. of the member 120 actuated by the arm fi6, the arm 234 is tilted by the connecting rod 233.
By means of the connecting rod 236, it then moves backwards the part 225 presenting the two racks 226, 227 and thus turns the pinion 205, the shaft 190 and the drum 190a which carries the movable teeth 190b. Consequently, the decimal transfer also takes place in counter B in the manner already indicated.
The drum 107 shown in FIG. 13 comprises ten discs 317 carrying the pins 318 intended to transfer the numbers from drum 107 to counter A. On the other hand, the latter comprises eleven discs 338, so there are more discs 317. This difference allows to carry out again the decimal transfer necessary for the correct indication of the result when, by adding names of ten digits at most, one arrives at a sum of eleven digits. On the other hand, <B> care- </B> my up to nine digits can be transferred to each of the counters B1 and B2.
As explained above, at the end of each multiplication the carriage 336 of the counter A is moved two or four intervals to the right, relative to its rest position. In this case, nine or seven disks 338 are aligned with disks 270, that is to say that a number of nine or of seven digits can be transferred to the counter B. When for this transfer this transfer is recorded. number in the cage 52, one or three rows of pins 53 thereof remain unused.
When we have totaled in one of the groups <I> B1, B2 </I> counter <I> B </I> a number constituting the sum of several products obtained one after the other if the counter A and. that we want to transfer this number to the group <I> B1, B2 </I> remained free, we must hit this number to register it in the cage 52, press the 228 key as for the operation + A -B and a subtotal key which prevents the release of the pins 53 of the cage 52.
In this way, the group B1, B2 in which the number was recorded is reset to zero, but the number remains stored in the cage 52 and is visible at the counter A .. The other group B1, B2 is then aligned on the counter A and the transfer is carried out on it by the operation -A + B, this time releasing the pins 53.
To move the counter carriage B to the right, a key 258 (fig. 13) provided for this purpose is acted on; this key carries a wedge (invisible in the drawing) by which, while descending, it rotates in the opposite direction to that of clockwise a lever 257 having a stop 257a retaining the carriage by its plate 209. Said rotation of the lever 257 releases the stop 257a from the carrier, and the latter is returned by the spring 254 to the right until its plate 208 abuts against the ring 201.
To move the counter carriage B to the left, against the force of the spring 254, we use a device shown controlled by a crank, device which acts on the plate 208 to push the carriage against the action. of the spring 254, until the lever 257 catches the plate 209 again.
To simply cancel the number entered, Bistré in a group B1, <I> B2 </I> counter <I> B, </I> we place this group @ next to counter A, we perform the operation -B <B> <I> + </I> A, </B> then we reset counter A to zero as after an addition.
