Gear change mechanism, in particular applicable to a bicycle. The present invention relates to a speed change mechanism according to the claim of the main patent.
The speed change mechanism according to the present invention is characterized in that the members with the aid of which the cyclist operates the speed change by reversing the direction of rotation of the crankshaft include a series of keys successively brought into engagement. with the ratchet teeth of said gear wheels by means of cams provided on an axial spindle controlled by a ratchet device actuated by backpedaling.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, two embodiments of the object of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal section through the crankshaft with the key engaged for first gear; Figs. 2 to 4 show in section the positions of the spindle in the three keys in position according to fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a section through the ratchet device, and FIGS. 6 and 7 are used to understand the second shape of the cams on the axial spindle.
In fig. 1 to 4 of the drawing, the crankshaft 1 carrying the two cranks 2 is mounted eccentrically in the cylindrical box 3 clamped in the sleeve of the frame of the bicycle. Three toothed pinions 4, 5 and 6 are mounted on this shaft, corresponding to the three speeds provided, which are transmitted to the chain wheel 7 by a countershaft 8 by means of the wheels 9 fixed to the latter shaft. The coupling between the crankshaft and the toothed wheels 4, 5 and 6 is obtained by a nel unidirectional coupling by means of keys 10, one for each toothed wheel, mounted. sliding in the crankshaft and engaging by a tooth 11 with a ratchet toothing 12 inside said toothed wheels.
These keys are housed in cells 13 of the crankshaft, and pushed into engagement by springs 14 placed at the bottom of the cells when the crankshaft is turned backwards. Coupling with one of the toothed wheels and decoupling is effected by a cam pin 15 axially disposed in the crankshaft. The cams of this spindle are formed by eccentric rods 16 connecting the two side walls of cutouts 17 made in the spindle, one cutout per toothed wheel.
In fig. 2, the cam 16 has rotated in its upper position, so that the spring 14 has been able to push the tooth 11 of the key 10 into engagement with the teeth of the wheel 0, while in FIGS. 3 and 4, the cams are in an intermediate position where they still hold the compressed springs 14.
The movements of the spindle 15 are controlled by means of a ratchet device 18 according to FIG. 5 corresponding to the three speeds provided. The spindle is provided with a toothing of three ratchets 19, a pivotable arm 20 being mounted idle on this toothing in which is housed a control claw 21 biased by a spring 22 and held in place by a screw 23.
A cutout 24 in the crankshaft with an opening of 120 corresponding to one of the three possible speeds limits the lifts of said arm 20.
The operation of this gear change is as follows: To walk forward, the coupling between the crankshaft and one of the toothed wheels is that shown in fig. 1. The crankshaft then drives the arm 20 and the spindle 15, this spindle being in its position of FIG. 2. The arm 20 can then pass without further a terminating stop 18 provided on the path of this arm.
If you want to change gears and backpedal, the arm 20 will then change its position and make an oscillation of 120 as soon as it has encountered said stop which retains it and stops any subsequent pedaling to be repressed. through this displacement of the arm, the control claw 21 making the same movement as the arm 20 has engaged in the next ratchet tooth, so that when we pedal forward again, the bicycle will run at speed next. By repeating the process described in this way once more, it will be possible to change to third gear.
In fig. 6 and 7, the cams 25 of the spindle 26 have the form of blades connecting the two walls of the cutouts 27. The holes of the keys which are also circular like those receiving the spindle of FIGS. 1 to 4 has in this case again a mortise 28 in which the blade of the spindle can be introduced to allow the tooth 11 to come into engagement with the internal teeth of the toothed wheels 4, 5 and 6.
