<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

It is known that, in order to bend a straight tube, it is well known to pull the tube on a rotating bending roller in the groove of which it winds. In the devices used for this purpose, the tube is applied against the bending roller and held in position by two support rollers.
It has also been proposed, in order to facilitate the bending of the tubes, in particular over a narrow radius of curvature, to heat the tube before the bending, especially in the region which will be the internal region of the bend.
In the case of thin-walled tubes, that is to say of tubes whose wall thickness is less than 10% of the diameter of the tube, and more especially in the case where it is necessary to heat the tube, it is necessary to It may happen that the support rollers, crushing the too weak metal, cause buckling, that is to say a flattening of the section of the tube, and folds which are harmful to obtaining a perfect bend .
To remedy this drawback, the Applicant has devised a device for supporting the tube consisting of a sleeve, preferably in two parts, completely surrounding the tube before it enters the bending roller, and leading it almost to the place. where the tube begins to take its curvature on the bending roller. This support sleeve is integral with the table carrying the bending roller and its presence, in addition to ensuring without buckling or wrinkling, the supply of the tube to the bending roller, eliminates one of the support rollers.
In addition, in the case of treating tubes of which, over a certain length, the section is ovalized beforehand to facilitate bending, the support sleeve must have a groove of oval section corresponding to that of the tube, but it is provided to provide at the entrance of the support sleeve and over a certain length a section groove such that it can be used both for the passage of the oval tube and of the same tube still having its cylindrical section. In this way, the portion of the tube which remains cylindrical can enter the support sleeve during the end of the bending and it suffices only to ovalize the length of straight tube which is to be bent.
The groove of the sleeve may even be such as to produce the ovalization of the tube inside it, under the effect of the traction exerted by the bending roller.
The description which follows, with reference to the accompanying drawings by way of example, will give a better understanding of the manner in which the invention can be implemented.
Fig. 1 shows schematically in plan the support die placed on the apparatus in front of the apparatus to be bent on the rotating roller.
The Ibis fig is a section by 1-1 of the tube of fig.
Fig. 2 is on a larger scale a section through II-II of fig.l.
Fig. 3 is on a larger scale a section through III-III of fig.l.
As seen in fig.l, the tube a that is to be bent engages on a rotating bending roller b, having a suitable groove, and in which the tube is applied by a roller d single support c. A hooking device, consisting of a finger d integral with the roller b and carrying a jaw mg, closed by a pivoting jack is provided to grip the edge of the tube a at its end, and in the region of this tube which is closest to the X axis of the rotating roller b. Under these conditions, the rotation in the direction of the arrow F of the roller b causes the winding of the tube a in the groove of the bending roller b and the bending of said tube.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
According to the invention, before its entry on the bending roller, the tube a is supported by a die preferably in two parts ef (fig.l and 2), between which is provided a groove whose section corresponds to the section of the tube to be treated, a section which may be ovalized beforehand as shown in Figures 1 and 2.
Part e is integral with the table on which the rollers pivot, and the second part f of the die engages in part e, as shown in fig.2. It can also be fixed on the table.
A heating mode, such as a torch i, is provided between the groove of the rotary bending roller b, and the front end of the support die ef, as seen in fig.l, so as to ensure in a continuous fashion during bending, the heating of the region of the tube which will become the internal region of the bend and this immediately before the moment the tube takes its bend on the bending roller. Thereafter, the tube is cooled, for example by contact with the grooves of the rollers bc, which rollers can be internally traversed by a cooling circuit so that the tube, once it has taken its belly, regains its cold stiffness.
In the case of a thin-walled tube, the tube of cyindrical section (fig.l bis) may have been ovalized beforehand, as stated above, over a length AB corresponding to the length of tube to be bent (as seen in fig. 1 and 2). The major axis EF of the oval is placed in the plane of symmetry perpendicular to the X axis of the bending roller.
As it is preferable to ovalize beforehand only the length AB of tube a, corresponding roughly to the length of tube to be bent, it is necessary to provide, at the end of the bending movement, that a certain portion of tube a of section which remains cylindrical, must penetrate into the soution die without passing over the bending roller. Therefore, according to the invention, the support matrix is in two parts. The part ef of the die located closest to the roller has a groove of oval section and the anterior part e f1 of said die has a section such that (as seen in fig. 3), it can be used both for passage of the tube of oval section (outline in phantom lines G) and of the tube which remains cylindrical (outline in dashed lines H).
The groove provided inside the support sleeve may moreover be that it gradually changes from the cylindrical shape to the oval shape, so that the ovalization of the tube occurs in said support matrix under the. tensile force exerted on the tube by the rotating roller b.
It goes without saying that modifications of detail can be made to the realization of this invention without departing from its scope.
