<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
contre laquelle l'extrémité du tuyau en cours de cintrage, ou la longueur de tuyau qui précède le point de cintrage peut reposer au cours du cintrage;
et les deux butées sont constituées par un bras 22 faisant saillie sur un anneau 23 qui entoure le tube 3 auquel il est fixé par une vis 24 traversant une fente 24' dudit anneau de façon à permettre au bras 22 de se régler de lui-même en position tout en assurant son maintien constant dans une position propre à permettre l'insertion ou l'enlèvement du tube à cintrer. L'extrémité libre du bras 22 est recourbée., comme représenté en 25 sur la fig. 3, de façon qu'elle s'ajuste autour de la partie du tube qui fait saillie hors du gabarit le plus grand 1;
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>

Improvements to the chines to enter the pipes.
This invention relates to machines for bending tubes of the kind in which the tube is bent around a jig or mandrel, in the form of a groove wheel with a determined radius, using an arm or radial lever that is rotates around this jig, the arm acting on the tube via a grooved shoe which rests on the tube around the outside of the curved part, and the invention relates more particularly to jigs intended for use in machines like this.
In machines of this kind as they were built up to this day, the jig was made
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
made of cast iron or rigidly constructed, so that in order to bend tubes of slightly different outer diameters, a jig was required with a different groove corresponding to the different outer diameters of the tubes, since the grooved circumference of the jig was not may have in cross section only a single curvature suitable for supporting a single tube of particular external diameter and that, if tubes are used whose diameter is smaller than that of the tubes intended to be bent around the template, the walls of the tube are not properly supported and this results in a deformation or a sinuous formation of the tube, besides, of course,
it is not possible to bend tubes having a slightly larger diameter than that of the tubes for which the jig is intended without deforming or flattening the tube to allow it to penetrate into the groove of the jig.
The disadvantages of a rigid jig are particularly evident in the plumbing industry where tubes are classified according to their internal diameter but can have different wall thicknesses, depending on the pressure they are intended to withstand or the resistance. mechanical requirement, resulting in the use of tubes of the same inside diameter but different wall thicknesses and therefore slightly different outside diameters.
The molten or rigid jig is also heavy, and this is important when the bending machine is to be transportable.
Furthermore, with the known constructions of tube bending machines, only a straight shoe or shoe of short length can be used between the tube and the radial lever by means of which the bending force is exerted. so that, when the tube has to be bent over the major part of a circle, it is necessary to move the shoe in steps as the tube is bent
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
and, if one seeks to avoid this repeated putting back into position of the shoe by using a longer shoe, it is found that, although the bending force applied may be that which is appropriate at the start of the bending, at the time when the radial arm has been moved to such an extent that the other end of the shoe is between the tube and this arm,
the force exerted on the tube has been altered to the extent that it results in deformation of the tube.
The object of the present invention is to avoid these drawbacks and to establish a jig which can be used for tubes of slightly different outer diameters when they are bent on a jig intended for a tube of normal dimensions} and another purpose. of the invention is to establish a machine which enables a considerable bending operation to be carried out without having to change the position of the shoe between the bending arm and the jig,
According to the invention, a jig intended for use in a bending machine is made of a raised or stamped sheet and has in cross section the shape of a semicircle extended by two side wings which preferably s' widen to the diameter of the largest tube that can be fitted into the jig,
so that this tube is housed completely inside the side wings and that, consequently, the projecting parts of said wings can receive between them the edges of the shoe used between the tube and the bending arm.
The invention further comprises a bending machine construction comprising a sheet metal jig and, in the machine according to the invention, the shoe is carried by the bending arm and is given a relatively short length. and its rear end (having regard to the direction of movement of the bending arm around the jig), is set to fit between the jig wings, while
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
its front end protrudes out of these wings and occupies a position such that it is slightly spaced from the tube, which prevents the latter from fraying.
The concave face of the shoe receives, not an exact circular cross section, but a very slightly oval section, so that this shoe does not come into contact with the wall of the tube being bent over the entire extent of its face , but only supports the tube at points other than the limiting outer circumference of the bent part formed on the tube by the machine,
The edges of the shoe tapers off and end in sharp edges, so that the shoe can be fitted between the wings of the jig until its rear end forms with the grooved periphery of said jig a complete and virtually complete support. circular that surrounds the tube.
The shoe preferably occupies such a position on the bending arm, or this arm itself is bent such that the application of the bending force takes place at about the front of a line. radial passing through the bending point of the tube,
The jig according to the invention can be used with a shoe of ordinary length and section, and the bending force can be applied to the shoe with the help of a roller carried by the bending arm, in the usual manner.
A machine construction established according to the invention and comprising a sheet metal jig is shown in the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1, 2 and 3 are an elevation view, a plan view and an end view of the machine, respectively; fig. 4 shows a support member capable of being used with the machine; fig, 5 and 6 represent an arrangement of arms
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
bending capable of being substituted for the arm shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 when using an ordinary detachable shoe.
The machine is provided with a curved jig 1 which has in cross section the shape shown in fig, 1 as well as in the end view of fig. 3, oomprenant a soul or semicircular portion 11 and two side wings 2 which diverge slightly outwardly so that the groove of the template widens outward.
This jig is preferably made of a strip of flat sheet metal to which is first given, by bending it transversely, the desired cross section, that is to say a semicircular core and two diverging side wings, and which is then curved in the shape of a quarter of a circle, to obtain the curved and grooved template, as shown in FIG. 2, To constitute a support for the template, one end of this quarter-circle is connected to a straight tube 3, and its other end is welded to a transverse tube 4, the opposite end of which is itself welded to the tube 3 at right angles to him.
Above, but at a slight distance from the jig 1 is placed another jig of smaller radius 5, suitable for tubes of smaller diameter. This smaller jig can be constructed in a similar fashion to the larger 1 using a strip bent to the desired cross section and then bent into a quarter circle with its ends welded to the support tubes 3 and 4. As an alternative, the support of the jig 5 may be a flat wall 6 which can be obtained by stamping in one piece with the jig; and when such a wall is provided as in the construction shown, the small jig 5 is fixed to the larger 1 by means of extensions or brackets 7 and 8 which are welded to the outside of the tube 3 and to the outside. of tube 4, respectively.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
Mon. and the other of these two sheet metal jigs and their brackets may be set up as separate devices of a bending machine so that they can be used in place of other jigs, and the brackets may be adapted or modified to be used with bending machines of constructions other than that shown and described.
The transverse tube 4 also constitutes the support of an axis or bolt 9 on which pivots a bending lever 10 provided with two cheeks or flanges 11 and 12 which reign above and below the largest template 1 and whose ends have holes through which the bolt 9 passes, so that the bending lever 10 can be pivoted around its pivot or bolt 9 and the jig 1, in the usual manner,
The upper cheek 11 is embraced by a slider 13 which carries a block 14 disposed between the two cheeks 11 and 12 and at the end of which is attached a vertical arm 15 to which the shoe 16 is attached relating to the smaller template 5, the block 14 itself carrying the shoe 17 which cooperates with the larger jig 1.
The concave faces of these shoes have in cross section not an exactly semi-circular shape, but a slightly oval shape, so that the central part or birth of the concave face, indicated at 18 on the shoe 17, does not enter not in contact with the wall of the tube (indicated by dashed lines in fig, l) and that, in this way, the tube is only subjected to the action of those parts of the grooved faces of the shoes which are neighboring edges tapering to sharp edges. 19, as shown, each shoe thus being able to fit inside the side wings of the template with which it cooperates.
Further, the shoes 16 and 17 are arranged so that only parts of their
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
edges 19 enter the grooves of the jigs, the remaining part of each shoe protruding out of the jig as shown, and the maahine is intended to be used with these protrusions placed in front of the shoes during the movement of the jig. bending, i.e. the bending operation is supposed to be carried out by moving the bending lever 10 in a clockwise direction, looking at fig. 2.
Each shoe has a position such that, at the start of the bending, its front end is not in contact with the tube. This prevents the tube from being scuffed at the start of bending and it is found that a slight compression or tamping of the tube during bending is sufficient for the leading edge of the shoe to contact the tube.
The two shoes 16 and 17 occupy a position relative to each other such that they both penetrate into the respective templates when the bucket slide 13 is moved along its cheek towards the pivot 9, and this slider can be held in position by a detachable pin 20, which is preferably attached by a chain 21 to the bending lever 10 and which is engaged through holes in the cheeks 11 and 12 and in the slider 13 and the block 14, which holes are arranged in alignment when the shoes have been placed correctly between the wings of the jigs, as shown.
The two shoes 16 and 17 also occupy on the slide 13 positions such that the bending force acts at a point between 10 and 25, but preferably approximately 15, beyond a radial line passing through the bending point, but, if desired, the bending lever 10 may itself be bent to the extent desired to allow the shoes to be placed at right angles to the bent portion of this lever,
A stopper is also provided for each template
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
against which the end of the pipe being bent, or the length of pipe that precedes the bending point can rest during the bending;
and the two stops are constituted by an arm 22 projecting on a ring 23 which surrounds the tube 3 to which it is fixed by a screw 24 passing through a slot 24 'of said ring so as to allow the arm 22 to adjust itself in position while ensuring its constant maintenance in a suitable position to allow the insertion or removal of the tube to be bent. The free end of the arm 22 is curved., As shown at 25 in FIG. 3, so that it fits around the part of the tube which protrudes out of the larger jig 1;
and to the arm 22 is further fixed a curved bracket 26 which behaves similarly as a stop or support for the bent pipes in the smallest template 5,
The protruding part of the tube 3 can be clamped in a vice or fixed to any other suitable support, and the interior of the tube is intended to receive a part 27 (fig. 4) having a retracted end 28 which fits to the tube. inside said tube 3 and the other end of which is provided with a rubber foot 29, the narrowed end 28 of part 27 can be adjusted in tube 3 so that this part protrudes in the same direction as the following one which the bending lever is shown in fig.
2, so that the part 27 constitutes an arm against which the operator can exert traction during the bending of a tube by using lamnachine in the manner of a shear; or the foot 29 can be pressed against the ground and the part 27 used as a support leg when bending the tube by rotating the bending lever in a vertical plane. The tube 3 is further drilled with a transverse hole 30 to the alignment of the transverse tube 4 so that the narrowed end of the part 27 can be adjusted.

in the opening thus formed, at right angles to the position just mentioned, during bending.
To perform the bending operation, the bending lever 10 is brought to a position perpendicular to that shown and engages the tube to be bent between the side wings of one or the other of the templates 1 or 5, said wings being sufficiently elastic ( due to the fact that the jig is made of sheet metal) to receive tubes of slightly different outer diameters, and the end of the tube or the part where the bending is to start is supported by the desired stop 25 or 26.
The slide 13 is then made to move along the bending lever towards the axis 9 until the shoe fits between the wings of the jig and the tube has been trapped between the groove of said jig and the shoe, which only comes into contact at its rear end with the tube, and the shoe is fixed by passing the pin 20 through the holes in the cheeks 11 and 12 of the bending lever and the hole (which then came to be place in their alignment) of block 14.
The part 27 is then adjusted in the tube 3 to constitute a fulcrum and a lever action for the bending and then the bending lever 10 is pulled around the jig so that the shoe moves along the surface of the bending. tube, the leading or front end of said shoe being that which protrudes from between the wings of the jig, It is noted that, with the arrangement and the construction described above of the shoes, it is possible to provide a pipe with a strongly curved part without deform or damage it and, of course, as the shoe moves around the jig with the lever, there is no need to interrupt the bending motion at certain intervals to change the position of the shoe.,

As soon as the bending movement has started,
part 27 can be transferred from the initial position which it occupied and in which it constitutes an extension of the tube 3 to a position in which it is fitted into the hole 30 made on the side of the tube 3, in alignment with the tube 4 , so as to obtain a greater leverage.
If desired, the usual separate shoe can be used with a jig of the kind described above and, in this case, the slide 13 and the shoes 16 and 17 carried by the bending lever itself are removed, the latter having the form shown in FIGS. 5 and 6.
In this case, the cheeks 11 and 12 carry pins 31 and 32 on which turn rollers 33 and 34, one or the other of which can rest on the flat face of a shoe arranged, in the well-known manner, between the roller and the pipe to be bent. The roller 33 is placed in a position such that it acts on the shoe cooperating with the larger template 1 and the other roller 34 in a position such that it can rest on the shoe used with the smaller template 5 ,
The machine shown has two jigs of different diameters, but it is obvious that the smaller one can be omitted, if necessary, in which case the machine would only be intended for bending pipes of one approximate normal dimension,
although it is obviously possible to provide separate jigs of other dimensions intended to be used with the same bending lever and the same shoe, ensuring that these other jigs and their supports can be substituted by the operator for the jig and its media that are already in the machine.
Furthermore, although the templates shown cover only about a quarter of a circle, one could

obviously give them a semi-circular or almost completely circular shape to allow

semi-circular or circular bent parts on a pipe by a single movement of the bending lever.
Due to the fact that the jig is made of a piece of tale, i.e. unmelted, the wings or flanges may flex elastically when placing the pipe in the groove of the jig, which creates the holes. top and bottom thrusts which are always desirable in pipe bending and which are particularly necessary when bending thin-walled copper tubing used in modern hot and cold water installations, besides, due to the ability of the sheet metal jig to open slightly, it can accommodate pipes of slightly different outside diameters or pipes with normal inside diameter but different wall thickness.
Such a jig therefore makes it unnecessary to use different jigs for tubes of slightly different diameters and wall thicknesses, as is necessary when using a molten or rigid jig, and sheet metal jigs are much larger. lighter than the cast jigs, which greatly reduces the weight of the entire machine.
Although the jig according to the invention is provided with flanges which protrude to the entire diameter of the tube to be bent, this is not essential when bending thick-walled tubes or a tube in which a spring has been fitted. inserted during bending; and the jig can therefore be given a semicircular shape in section (devoid of fully protruding flanges) when only thick-walled tubes have to be bent.
In addition, by the application of a shoe of the construction described above, it is found that deformation or deterioration of the tube is avoided and that an operator can create any desired degree of bending, up to the limit of the template, without that it is necessary to adjust the guide during bending.
