<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

"Method and device for obtaining, cinematographic light projections in relief **.
The invention relates to a new method and to subsequent devices for obtaining cinematographic projections giving the impression of relief, that is to say an illusion of optical depth.
The invention is essentially characterized by the fact that it carries out a process coordinating new means specific to the three main phases of cinematography, respectively the shooting, the making of the film and the projection in relief.
Unlike the methods already recommended, the illusion of optical depth is therefore, in accordance with the present invention, the result of the special and particular adaptation of these. three phases essential to highlighting.
This new process is essentially characterized
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
by the fact that two angular views are taken at the same time, at the normal rate, by two identical normal lenses, distant from the average of the two eyes, these two shots being taken on two negative films, each lens taking its views, of his angie, on his own negative. The new factor of the highlighting results from the convergence towards the subject or towards the center of the sight, of the two optical rays, or by rotation of the camera on the center of its objective.
The method of the invention is further characterized by the fact that using the two wires; negative cases thus obtained, a positive film is formed which has a succession of pairs of views, the two views of the same pair being placed one above the other, and presenting the same image taken at the same time, but from two different angles as indicated above. Finally, the process is completed by projection, with the help of an apparatus allowing the unfolding of the film at a speed twice as fast as the normal speed and by interposing between the film and the screen, a special device called "relief shutter", which will be described later.
According to the invention, the two cameras are therefore convergent towards the subject to be taken and this convergence is obtained by rotating the equipment around the center of their respective objective. This convergence will obviously only be essential for small and medium distances. For great distances, the convergence can be taken to infinity, which therefore places the two cameras in parallel.
According to one embodiment, the relief shutter is formed by a grid with equidistant parallel wires, the inter-wire distance being equal or approximately to the thickness of the wires. These dimensions will be as small as possible.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
This grid is interposed between the film and the screen, as close as possible to the film. It is animated by a movement. alternating rectilinear transverse to the length of the wires. This reciprocating movement is adjusted so that its amplitude is approximately equal to the distance between the wires of the grid, while the frequency is half that of the displacement of the film in front of the objective. The result of this is that the displacement of two images corresponds to a single lateral displacement of the grid forming the relief shutter.
These various conditions being fulfilled, one can achieve the cinematographic projection in relief practically with the same facility as the current plan projection.
The new process, object of the invention, therefore gives rise to three distinct ideas, which can be put into practice by various means all, however, all within the scope of the present invention.
THE SHOOTING.-
The shooting is done so that one takes at the same time two angular views, each on a negative film, by two similar and normal objectives, distant from the normal distance of the two eyes. The camera will be specially conditioned so as to present two similar objectives, lable and normal, -distant by a distance generally close to 58 mm. The device has a mechanism specially constituted for produce the synchronized movement of the advancement of the film, one view at a time, for example by means of the Maltese cross. The shutter which regulates the negative exposure of the film, the setting. in focus, the diaphragm, 'are in the field of current cinema tography.
As a new factor, the emphasis specific to the present process has been introduced. This emphasis can be done mechanically by converging the two shooting devices rotating for this purpose around the center of their respective objective, or even by optical means, which consists of placing a prism in front of the objective. or a set of
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
suitable prisms, in order to modify the direction of the optical rays by refraction according to the necessary convergence.
The pictures according to the invention can be carried out by two similar cameras at a distance from the normal distance of the two eyes and actuated synchronously. Or, the pictures can be taken by a single apparatus conditioned for the taking of two pictures simultaneously transmitted by an appropriate optical arrangement, so that they come to be placed one above the lane. 'another on the same film, which, in this case, advances two frames each time, by movement. It is possible to envisage extending this special shooting to the taking of two images in times allowing them to be considered as practically the same.
In this case, the two angular views are taken alternately and are projected onto a single film, by an appropriate optical system, placed in the center and in front of the film and rotating from left to right, 180, to transmit alternately. the two frames thus received, each time on the location of a frame of the film, which, in this case, advances one frame at a time. Obviously, these last two means have the great drawback of requiring lenses having very long focal points, which is practically impossible, especially for small formats.
As another corollary, we could still admit the extreme case of a single objective with one or two films, in which case the objective should be placed laterally, so as to take the images successively from two different angles, depending on the parallactic distance. from the center of the image.
This solution, although not impossible, is however difficult.
Consequently, the shooting will be done most generally, but not exclusively, by the simultaneous capture of two angular views, each on a negative film and that with the intervention of two similar and normal objectives, distant of the average distance of the two eyes.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
THE POSITIVE DRAW.
The aim of the printing of the positive is to constitute, with the help of two negatives, a single positive, in which a succession of pairs of damages has been produced, each pair of images being made up of two similar images and taken at the same time, these images being placed one after the other.
For this purpose, it is necessary to have a printer specially conditioned for this purpose. The two negative films, left and right, are placed next to 1 + the other, each in front of a window of equal luminosity, which can open and close alternately. The positive strip is moved in such a way that it is able to come and stand alternately in front of one and the other negative. The special relief film is therefore obtained by the laterally movable strip, thus coming into contact with one or the other of the negative views, the luminous window of which opens at this moment of pressure.
In other words, when the positive strip requests, on a view of the negative, left for example, the shutter of the latter opens, while the shutter corresponding to the right negative remains closed. The left positive is thus impressed, after which the corresponding shutter closes, while the left positive and negative move forward one notch, during which the right negative remains motionless. Then the positive goes to the right negative, the window of which opens, while the left negative window remains closed. The positive right is impressed and these different movements are repeated continuously.
It is obviously possible to obtain a relief film in accordance with the invention, by a printer in which the two negatives come to be placed above the positive strip in front of a single light window; the two images of the same pair are therefore impressed by the same window on the positive and the latter will then have to move each time by one image. The two negative films will obviously be moved laterally,
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
so as to be placed next to the single window. Or again, the positive can be impressed by the first negative by moving the positive each time by a step equal to two image heights. In this way, each impression will be preceded and followed by a blank surface on which the images of the second negative will be impressed.
Obviously, the impression of the latter will be done very exactly like the first, but by making its images coincide with the blank surfaces of the positive by still moving the latter with a movement such that it moves each time from the height of two images.
The characteristics relating to the exposure of the film to the exposure time; chemical treatment, etc., are within the common field of photography.
PROJECTION.
For the projection of the images, it is necessary to have an ordinary apparatus to which various modifications have been made. First of all, it will have to be adapted to enable it to move the film at double the usual speed. Next, it is necessary to interpose between the film and the screen a relief shutter of the type, for example, of that which has been described above. In this case, it is a grid with narrow, equidistant wires, the inter-wire spaces of which are substantially equal to the thickness of the wires.
According to one embodiment, this grid will be placed vertically, the son being also in the vertical position. The grid moves horizontally in a rectilinear reciprocating motion. It is recommended that the relief shutter be placed as close as possible to the film and that the amplitude of its displacement be substantially equal to the inter-wire distance, while its frequency should be half that of the film. The exact position of this relief shutter must be adjustable with great precision. The grid being placed vertically, the wires could also be placed horizontally.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
tally or inclined.
The reciprocating movement will always be transverse to the length of the wires. Use could also be made of two grids placed one opposite the other and animated with normal reciprocating movements with respect to one another. It is moreover also possible to envisage means of adjustment for the interdistance of the wires of the grid and especially for the amplitude and the frequency of the reciprocating movement thereof.
The illusion of relief could 'also result from' the use -of two similar projection devices, each perfectly synchronized and projecting / a positive coming respectively from the left negative and the right negative, these devices functioning in such a way. that the same images of two films be projected successively. Both cameras would also make use of the relief shutter. The speed of rotation of the devices would be similar to that currently accepted; the relief shutter would move at a frequency equal to. that of the apparatus and the two projection objectives would be found as close as possible to each other.
Obviously, in such a case, only one of the two devices would have to render the sound, which would also make it possible, by corollary, having two films, to provide, for example, that one of the filma would render the words in one language. , while the other film would deliver the words in another language. As we will notice, the achievement! This new process is in itself relatively simple, especially if one takes into account the precision and development currently achieved in the cinematographic field.
The camera (s) will be executed in a rational manner and it is useful that objectives are provided so that they can be angularly variable, independent of each other.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
One could also introduce the advantages of the relief shutter - for example of the grid with reciprocating movement - in the printing of films and in the shooting.
Or again, this means could be used in all phases or only certain phases of the making and screening of the film.
Even if we have two synchronized devices, we can pair them on the same support, so as to make their use more comfortable. It is understood that the three main characteristics, objects of the three main ideas of this new process, can be used together or individually, in combination with other means.
CLAIMS.
