<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
- Si l'on suppose que les fils,aussi bien de l'ai- guille que de la navette,sont convenablement enfilés, lors de l'aotionnement de la machine et chaque fois qae l'aigaille stest élevée d'environ 3 mm. à partir du débat de son trajet ascendant la pointe 10' du corps de cette navette qui tourne par suite du mouvement qu'elle reçoit de l'axe 7,prend le fil de l'aiguille et l'entraîne,en formant deux brins ( voir la figure 4 (;
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

Sewing machine shuttle ".
This invention relates to an improved shuttle for sewing machines, of the type with vertical axis and double rotation, that is to say which makes two turns for each stitch made by the needle,
This shuttle is designed and constructed so as to be able to move at high speeds without causing any disturbance in the sewing in progress and without danger of damage or premature wear. In addition, the constituent parts of this shuttle are of easy construction, lend themselves to mass production, and possess great resistance or solidity.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, a successful realization of this shuttle.
FIG. 1 is a view in longitudinal vertical section of this shuttle, in the middle of the neighboring members.
Figure 2 is a vne in horizontal projection.
Figure 3 is an exterior view from the front in the position it occupies in the machine.
FIG. 4 is a plan view thereof, the shuttle being shown on its own, this view showing how the needle thread passes through it.
FIGS. 5, 6 and 7 are respectively: the first a plan view, the other two two elevational views of the shuttle holder of this shuttle.
Figure 8 is a plan view of the flange which retains the bobbin holder in the body of the shuttle,
Figures 9 and 10 are, respectively, a plan view and an elevational view of the body of the shuttle.
The shuttle, which is shown here has a vertical axis 1 suitably mounted on the frame of the sewing machine. near its upper end, this pin 1 carries a collar 1 and, at its lower end, it is provided with a via 2 with a swollen head which cooperates with the collar 1 'to fix this pin 1 in the axial direction. Beyond. from its collar 1 ', the axis 1 is extended and carries a bevel pinion 3 on which the body 4 of the shuttle is placed. This body 4 comprises a lower extension 4 'which penetrates into the central hole of the pinion 3 and which is fixed to the axis 1 by a screw 5 embedded axially in the latter and which is introduced from above into the body 4 of the shuttle.
The pinion 3 is therefore held between the collar 1 'of the axis 1 and the bottom of the. body 4 in the form of a bowl for the shuttle. The axis 1, the pinion 3 and the shuttle body 4 therefore form a block. Pinion 3 meshes with a bevel gear

6 which has twice as many teeth as it and which is fixed on a horizontal axis 7 animated by a rotational movement in a determined direction. The construction of this axis, its method of assembly and the way in which it receives its movement are not described here, since they do not form part of the invention.
The body 4 of the shuttle externally takes the shape of an inverted cone section and has, internally, a cylindrical cavity 8 with a flat bottom limited, at its upper part, by a coping forming a projection 8 ', This shuttle body 4 is cut on its inner face of a notch 9 diametrically opposed to another groove 10 so as to balance the masses formed by the assembly delimiting the internal cavity 8, as clearly shown in FIGS. 8, 9 and 10. The groove 10 starts from the bottom of the body 4 of the shuttle and extends over its side wall; it is cut obliquely to form a point 10 'which protrudes from the upper part of the body in question.
This has, in addition, from the point 10 'and approximately up to 180 thereof, a projection 11 located above and outside this body 4 and provided with a longitudinal depression 11 'which is necessary so that the needle thread does not rub against the edge of the boat and next to which is placed (when looking at the shuttle body from above in figure 9) a leaf spring 12 which is fixed to the inclined side. of the body 4 using a screw 12 '.
This blade 12 forms, by its lower part, a projecting point 12 "which projects from the lower part of the point 101, thus constituting a part which guides the thread of the needle at the appropriate time until it stops. meets a stop 12 "', formed by this blade 12, and which it penetrates into a lateral hole made in the body 4.
Inside the body 4 of the shuttle is housed the
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
eanette holder 13, which is shown separately in figars 5, 6 and 7. This piece has a cylindrical zone 14 on the outside which fits exactly against the projection-guide 8 'of the body 4 which serves as a rest. The fixing of the bobbin holder 13 in the body 4 of the shuttle is provided by a flange 15, which is fixed by means of screws 15 'on the sapérieare face of the body 4; this flange 15, in the form of an arched arc, is gaping in its part which coincides with the lateral opening 10 of the shuttle body 4.
Likewise, the cylindrical zone 14 of the bobbin holder 13 is interrupted at 14 'in its part which faces the needle and extends slightly in the direction of the rotation of the shuttle, as clearly shown in figures 4,5 and 7. In the linear zone 14 are made notches 14 "which leave the guide projection 8 'of the shuttle body 4 free of any dirt resulting from friction against the wire; these notches are cleaned automatically each time in front of them. passes through the notch 10. Thanks to these notches, the guide and the circular slide, which are made of hardened steel, can operate without being greased at any speed and for all the time necessary.
The cylindrical zone 14 of the bobbin holder is extended. by its lower part, by a frustoconical projection 16 limited by a flat 16 '.
The various members are arranged so qae, once the bobbin holder is placed in the body 4 of the shuttle, as has been described and as shown in Figure 1, there remains a free space between the projection 16 and the bottom of the shuttle body 4. this space is accessed by the notch 10 made in this body and by the gaping part of the corresponding retaining flange 15 as well as by the part 14 'which runs below the cylindrical zone 14 da bobbin holder.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
i At the upper part of its zone 14, the bobbin holder 13 has a crown 17 with a frustoconical surface, the lower edge of which coincides with the outer edge of the flange 15 and, consequently with the interior of the. protrusion 11 of the shuttle body 4, so that the flange 15 remains below the protrusion 11. The crown 17 is made from the edge of the plate of the machine on which we sew, and ends a little below the longitudinal axis of the machine. This crown 17 is extended by a curved horizontal arm 18 which ends in a spout 18 'shaped on its upper edge.
Against the outer face of this arm is fixed the leaf spring 19, by means of a screw 19 ', in order to adjust the tension of the wire. It is between this leaf spring 19 and the outer wall of the arm 18 that the coil wire engages which passes below this arm, then below the leaf spring 19 and is retained by a lug 19 "which the arm 18 presents and which penetrates into a notch made in the blade 19.
This, in this region, rises higher than the upper plane of the needle holder so that, thanks to the presence of the bead 19 "', it prevents the loop made by the needle thread from tangling. with the wire coming out of the paddle holder.by its part opposite to that which has just been described, the crown 17 is extended by a cylindrical part 30 which ends in an inclined plane 20 ', which gives rise to a path oblique which leads, according to the required shape, the wire of the spool under the circular arm 18 with a view to its threading in the manner described above.
The cylindrical wall 20 has a projection 21 diametrically opposed to the point of exit 19 "'of the wire; this projection 21 is housed in a cavity 28 made in the frame of the machine, This is how the immobilization of the door is achieved. -oanette. This one is hollowed out, in addition, of a cylindrical cavity 22 with a flat bottom, in
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
the wall of which are made several holes 23 designed to reduce its weight.
From the center of the bottom of this cavity rises a cylindrical rod 24 on which the bobbin is mounted, a spool 25. At the upper part of this rod 24, an articulated tongue 26 is mounted, the positions of which are raised and lowered. are determined by a spring 27 housed in this rod.
This tongue 26 serves, in its folded-down position, to retain the bobbin 25 in its housing but so that it can turn freely, in order to pull it with silk once the tongue 26 has been lifted, the bobbin is introduced. 'fingernail of the index finger of the hand in the recess 20' and the can is pulled towards you by the lower part of its upper disc *
The operation of this shuttle operates as follows:
- If it is assumed that the threads, both of the needle and of the shuttle, are correctly threaded, when the machine is actuated and each time the needle is raised by about 3 mm. from the debate of its upward path the tip 10 'of the body of this shuttle which turns as a result of the movement it receives from the axis 7, takes the thread of the needle and drives it, forming two strands ( see figure 4 (;
a lower strand which enters through the notches 10 of the body 4 of the shuttle and the flange 15 and through the notch 14 'of the bobbin holder to pass, in this form, below the latter, and a another upper strand or strand which slides along the protrusion 11 because it is driven by the stop 12 "'of the leaf spring 12 which forces it to raise it along the conical crown 17 and pass freely above the bobbin holder 13, as shown in FIG. 4. In the latter, the bobbin lined with thread has not been shown, so as not to confuse the drawing.
In the position represented by this figure, the thread guide of the machine which has facilitated the passage of the maximum quantity of thread with a view to
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
@ formation of the corresponding loop, begins to pull on it reducing it and forcing it to escape from the projection 21 of the bobbin holder 13 and from the cavity 28 of the frame of the machine.
These components prevent the total rotation of the part in question, but they leave it a small angular play which, together with its lightness, facilitates the full passage of the buckle when it is completely free with respect to the boat since , as this last one has continued to turn, the aus-indicated grooves, which had given passage to the lower strand of the thread, coincide and allow it to come out.
When the tip 10 'of the shuttle body has made a complete revolution from the time when. she had picked up the loop of thread near the needle, the thread guide of the machine will end the upward path, tighten the thread of the loop already crossed by the shuttle thread, stretched by the blade of 19 'steel is obtained in this way a stitch, the needle down, while the point 10' of the shuttle makes another turn to find the needle once it has been raised. vee of about 3 mm.
The shuttle described can vary from the point of view of the dimensions and the accessory shapes of its constituent parts, of the material or materials of which they are made, and of the construction details provided that the functional relationships between the various organs remain the same.
