本発明は、光合波回路に関し、より詳細には、光の3原色など複数の波長の光を合波し、各波長の光の強度をモニタリングすることができる光合波回路に関する。
近年、眼鏡型端末、小型のピコプロジェクタに適用する光源として、R(赤色光)、G(緑色光)、B(青色光)の3原色の光を出力するレーザダイオード(LD)を含む小型の光源の開発が行われている。LDは、LEDに比べて直進性が高いため、フォーカスフリーなプロジェクタを実現することができる。また、LDは、発光効率が高く低消費電力であり、色再現性も高く、近年注目を集めている。
図1に、LDを用いたプロジェクタの代表的な光源を示す。プロジェクタ用の光源は、R、G、Bの各色の単一波長の光を出力するLD1~3と、LD1~3から出力された光をコリメート化するレンズ4~6と、それぞれの光を合波してMEMSミラー16に出力するダイクロイックミラー10~12とを含む。1本のビームに束ねられたRGB光は、MEMSミラー16などを用いてスイープされ、LDの変調と同期させることにより、スクリーン17上に映像が投影される。レンズ4~6とダイクロイックミラー10~12との間には、ハーフミラー7~9が挿入されており、分岐した各色の光をフォトダイオード(PD)13~15によりモニタリングして、ホワイトバランスを調整している。
一般的に、LDは共振器の前後方向に光を出射するが、後方側のモニタリングでは精度が悪いため、光を出射させる前方側でモニタリング(フロントモニタリング)するのが一般的である。図1に示したように、RGB光源として使用するためには、LD1~3、レンズ4~6、ハーフミラー7~9、およびダイクロイックミラー10~12などのバルクの光学部品を、空間光学系により組み合わせる必要がある。さらに、ホワイトバランスの調整のためのモニタリングのために、ハーフミラー7~9、PD13~15などのバルク部品が必要となり、光学系として大型化してしまうため、光源の小型化の妨げになるという課題があった。
一方、バルク部品による空間光学系ではなく、石英系平面光波回路(Planar lightwave circuit:PLC)を用いたRGBカプラが注目されている(例えば、非特許文献1参照)。PLCは、Siなどの平面状の基板に、フォトリソグラフィなどによるパターニング、反応性イオンエッチング加工により、光導波路を作製し、複数の基本的な光回路(例えば、方向性結合器、マッハツェンダ干渉計など)を組み合わせることにより、各種の機能を実現することができる(例えば、非特許文献2及び3参照)。

図3に、2つの方向性結合器を用いたRGBカプラの構成を示す。PLCを用いたRGBカプラ100は、第1~第3の入力導波路101~103と、第1、第2の方向性結合器104,105と、第2の入力導波路102と接続された出力導波路106とを備えている。
第1の方向性結合器104は、第1の入力導波路101から入射されたλ2の光を第2の入力導波路102に結合し、第2の入力導波路102から入射されたλ1の光を第1の入力導波路101に結合して第2の入力導波路102へと再び結合するように導波路長、導波路幅および導波路間のギャップが設計されている。第2の方向性結合器105は、第3の入力導波路103から入射されたλ3の光を第2の入力導波路102に結合し、第1の方向性結合器104において第2の入力導波路102に結合されたλ1及びλ2の光を透過するように導波路長、導波路幅及び導波路間のギャップが設計されている。
例えば、第1の入力導波路101には緑色光G(波長λ2)、第2の入力導波路102には青色光B(波長λ1)、第3の入力導波路103には赤色光R(波長λ3)を入射し、3色の光R、G、Bが第1、第2の方向性結合器104,105によって合波されて出力導波路106から出力される。λ1、λ2、λ3の波長としては、それぞれ450nm、520nm、638nmの光が用いられる。
しかしながら、このようなRGBカプラを適用して、ホワイトバランスの調整のためのモニタリング機能を含めた光源を構成することについては、光源の小型化、モニタリングの精度の観点から検討がなされていなかった。
本発明の目的は、PLCからなる合波部を含み、複数の波長の光をそれぞれ精度よくモニタリングすることができる光合波回路を提供することにある。
本発明は、このような目的を達成するために、光合波回路の一実施態様は、複数の入力導波路から出力された光をそれぞれ分岐する複数の分岐部と、前記複数の分岐部でそれぞれ分岐された一方の光を合波する合波部と、前記合波部で合波された光を出力する出力導波路と、前記複数の分岐部でそれぞれ分岐された他方の光を、それぞれ出力する複数のモニタリング用導波路と、各々の入力導波路の両側に所定の間隔を空けて設けられた遮光溝であって、当該入力導波路に結合できなかった迷光が、前記複数のモニタリング用導波路の出射端面および前記出力導波路の出射端面とは異なる端面に反射されるように設けられた、複数の遮光溝とを備えたことを特徴とする。
前記複数のモニタリング用導波路の各々、前記出力導波路、前記合波部の脇に設けられ、それぞれ前記入力導波路の光軸と45度の角度を有する複数の遮光溝をさらに備えることもできる。
本発明によれば、モニタリング用導波路に結合されるPD、出力導波路に結合されるポートに、迷光が入射しないように遮光溝が配置されるので、精度よくモニタリングすることが可能となる。
以下、図面を参照しながら本発明の実施形態について詳細に説明する。本実施形態では、合波器として、方向性結合器を用いる方法を用いて説明するが、合波方法によって本発明が限定されるものではない。また、光の3原色の波長を合波するRGBカプラを例に説明するが、その他の複数の波長を合波する光合波回路に適用できることは言うまでもない。
[第1の実施形態]
図4に、本発明の第1の実施形態の実施例1にかかるモニタリング機能付き光源を示す。モニタリング機能付き光源は、R、G、Bの各色の光をそれぞれ出力する第1~第3のLD2011~2013と、PLC型のRGBカプラ210と、RGBカプラ210に光学的に接続された第1~第3のPD2021~2023とを備えている。
図4に、本発明の第1の実施形態の実施例1にかかるモニタリング機能付き光源を示す。モニタリング機能付き光源は、R、G、Bの各色の光をそれぞれ出力する第1~第3のLD2011~2013と、PLC型のRGBカプラ210と、RGBカプラ210に光学的に接続された第1~第3のPD2021~2023とを備えている。
PLC型のRGBカプラ210は、第1~第3のLD2011~2013と光学的に接続された第1~第3の入力導波路2111~2113と、導波路を伝搬する光を2分岐する第1~第3の分岐部2121~2123と、第1~第3の分岐部2121~2123でそれぞれ分岐された一方の光を合波する合波部214と、第1~第3の分岐部2121~2123でそれぞれ分岐された他方の光を、第1~第3のPD2021~2023に出力する第1~第3のモニタリング用導波路2131~2133と、合波部214で合波された光を出力する出力導波路215とを含む。
PLC型のRGBカプラ210において、第1~第3の入力導波路2111~2113にそれぞれ入射した光は、第1~第3の分岐部2121~2123でそれぞれ2分岐される。分岐された光の一方は、第1~第3のモニタリング用導波路2131~2133を介して第1~第3のPD2021~2023に出力され、分岐された光の他方は、合波部214で合波されて出力導波路215に出力される。
合波部214としては、図3に示した方向性結合器を用いた光合波回路を用いることができる。この場合、第1~第3の入力導波路2111~2113が、それぞれ、図3に示す第1~第3の入力導波路101~103に結合し、出力導波路215が、図3に示す出力導波路106に結合する。しかしながら、合波部214としては、これに限定されず、導波路型の他の合波手段(例えば、マッハツェンダ干渉計、モードカプラなど)を用いてもよい。
図4に示したように、第1~第3の入力導波路2111~2113を伝搬する光を、第1~第3の分岐部2121~2123でそれぞれ分岐した場合、第1~第3のLD2011~2013と第1~第3の入力導波路2111~2113との結合特性をモニタリングすることができる。加えて、事前に、合波部214の合波特性を把握しておくことにより、第1~第3のPD2021~2023のモニタリング値を用いて、光源としてのホワイトバランスを調整することが可能である。
[第2の実施形態]
図5に、本発明の第2の実施形態にかかるモニタリング機能付き光源を示す。第1の実施形態によれば、R、G、Bの各色の光を、それぞれモニタリングすることができるので、例えば、RGBカプラの設計値からの偏差が、製造時の誤差により短波長側(B)と長波長側(R)とで異なる場合であっても、個別にフィードバック制御が可能なので、精度よくホワイトバランスを調整することができる。しかしながら、LD201の出射面と対向するようにPD202を配置すると、PD202に迷光が入射してしまい、正確なモニタリング値が取れない可能性がある。迷光とは、LD201の出力が入力導波路211に結合できずに、RGBカプラ210内部に漏れ出した光、合波部214において合波し切れなかった光または漏れ出した光、合波部214の捨てポートを介してRGBカプラ210内部に漏れ出した光などである。
図5に、本発明の第2の実施形態にかかるモニタリング機能付き光源を示す。第1の実施形態によれば、R、G、Bの各色の光を、それぞれモニタリングすることができるので、例えば、RGBカプラの設計値からの偏差が、製造時の誤差により短波長側(B)と長波長側(R)とで異なる場合であっても、個別にフィードバック制御が可能なので、精度よくホワイトバランスを調整することができる。しかしながら、LD201の出射面と対向するようにPD202を配置すると、PD202に迷光が入射してしまい、正確なモニタリング値が取れない可能性がある。迷光とは、LD201の出力が入力導波路211に結合できずに、RGBカプラ210内部に漏れ出した光、合波部214において合波し切れなかった光または漏れ出した光、合波部214の捨てポートを介してRGBカプラ210内部に漏れ出した光などである。
そこで、第2の実施形態では、LD301とPD302が対向しないように、第1~第3のモニタリング用導波路3131~3133を、90°の光路変換用の曲げ導波路とした。LD301からの光の出射方向および合波部314からの光の出射方向が、PD302における光の入射方向に対して概ね垂直となるように構成することにより、迷光がPD302に入射することを回避することができる。
PLC型のRGBカプラ310は、第1~第3のLD3011~3013と光学的に接続された第1~第3の入力導波路3111~3113と、導波路を伝搬する光を2分岐する第1~第3の分岐部3121~3123と、第1~第3の分岐部3121~3123でそれぞれ分岐された一方の光を合波する合波部314と、第1~第3の分岐部3121~3123でそれぞれ分岐された他方の光を、第1~第3のPD3021~3023に出力する第1~第3のモニタリング用導波路3131~3133と、合波部214で合波された光を出力する出力導波路315とを含む。
[第3の実施形態]
第2の実施形態によれば、迷光がPD302に入射することを回避することができる。しかしながら、LD301とRGBカプラ310の入力導波路311との接続端面においては、一般的に、LD出力の2~30%の光が、入力導波路には結合せず、迷光となることが知られている。従って、LD301からの光の出射方向とPD302における光の入射方向とを概ね垂直となるようにしても、PD302に入射する迷光を、完全に防ぐことができない。加えて、迷光が出力導波路315に結合されるポートに入射してしまうことも防ぐことができない。
第2の実施形態によれば、迷光がPD302に入射することを回避することができる。しかしながら、LD301とRGBカプラ310の入力導波路311との接続端面においては、一般的に、LD出力の2~30%の光が、入力導波路には結合せず、迷光となることが知られている。従って、LD301からの光の出射方向とPD302における光の入射方向とを概ね垂直となるようにしても、PD302に入射する迷光を、完全に防ぐことができない。加えて、迷光が出力導波路315に結合されるポートに入射してしまうことも防ぐことができない。
そこで、第3の実施形態では、RGBカプラ310内の導波路、光機能回路が形成されていない部分に遮光溝を設け、迷光を反射させることにより、PD302や出力導波路315に結合されるポートに入射する迷光を、極力防ぐ構成とする。
(実施例1)
図6に、本発明の第3の実施形態の実施例1にかかるモニタリング機能付き光源を示す。モニタリング機能付き光源は、R、G、Bの各色の光をそれぞれ出力する第1~第3のLD3011~3013と、PLC型のRGBカプラ310と、RGBカプラ310に光学的に接続されたPD3021~3023とを備えている。RGBカプラ310は、実際の導波路の寸法、光機能回路の寸法の比に近くなるように書き改めている。遮光溝316は、光機能回路の分岐部312と合波部314、その他導波路の形成されていない部分に設けられる。
図6に、本発明の第3の実施形態の実施例1にかかるモニタリング機能付き光源を示す。モニタリング機能付き光源は、R、G、Bの各色の光をそれぞれ出力する第1~第3のLD3011~3013と、PLC型のRGBカプラ310と、RGBカプラ310に光学的に接続されたPD3021~3023とを備えている。RGBカプラ310は、実際の導波路の寸法、光機能回路の寸法の比に近くなるように書き改めている。遮光溝316は、光機能回路の分岐部312と合波部314、その他導波路の形成されていない部分に設けられる。
図7に、第3の実施形態の遮光溝の構造を示す。RGBカプラ310の入力導波路311が形成された部分の断面図である。基板401上に下部クラッド層を堆積し、さらにコア層を堆積し、所望の導波路パターンとなるように、エッチング加工してコアパターン403a~403cを形成する。下部クラッド層とコアパターン403とを覆うように、上部クラッドを堆積して、クラッド402を形成し、埋め込み型導波路が完成する。次に、クラッド402を基板401に達するまでエッチングして、遮光溝404a~404dを形成する。一般的なPLCにおいて、コアは2μm角、クラッドの厚さが20μm、遮光溝404の幅が50~75μmである。
遮光溝404の側壁が全反射面となって、迷光を反射することができるが、さらに遮光溝404を、遮光材で埋めてもよい。このように、従来の方法で作製したPLC型のRGBカプラにおいて、遮光溝を形成するエッチング工程のみを追加すればよく、簡単な工程の追加でモニタリングの精度を向上することができる。
遮光溝316の配置について、再び図6を参照して説明する。遮光溝316は、LD301からの光の出射方向および合波部314からの光の出射方向に対して、概ね45度の角度で形成されている。LD301からの出射光のうち入力導波路311に結合できなかった迷光が、遮光溝316で反射して、PD302と結合する面とは反対の面に出射するように設けられる。すなわち、遮光溝316は、モニタリング用導波路313の出射端面および出力導波路315の出射端面とは異なる端面に、迷光を反射するように配置される。遮光溝316の角度は、LD301からの光の出射方向に対して45度が最適であるが、PD302および出力ポートと結合しない方向に反射できれば、どのような角度でもよい。
迷光を除去する効果が大きい順に、第1に、LD301と入力導波路311との接続端面に近い入力導波路311の両側に一対、入力導波路311と所定の間隔を空け、入力導波路311の入射端面から光軸に沿って45度の角度をなす遮光溝316a~316dを設ける。このとき、LD301からの迷光を、モニタリング用導波路313の出射端面とは反対方向の面に反射するように配置する。さらに、入力導波路311の入射端面から光軸に沿って複数対の遮光溝を設けてもよい。
第2に、PD302とモニタリング用導波路313との接続端面に近いモニタリング用導波路313の両側に一対、モニタリング用導波路313と所定の間隔を空け、遮光溝316e~316hを設ける。モニタリング用導波路313を伝搬する光以外の迷光が、PD302に入射しないように配置する。すなわち、遮光溝316は、モニタリング用導波路313の出射端面からの光の出射方向とは異なる方向に、迷光を反射するように配置される。遮光溝316の角度は、モニタリング用導波路313からの光の出射方向に対して45度が好適である。さらに、入力導波路311の間、モニタリング用導波路313の間に複数の遮光溝を設けることもできる。ただし、PD302の受光面に垂直な線上および出力導波路315の出射端面に垂直な線上には、遮光溝を配置しない方がよい。
第3に、迷光が出力導波路315に結合されるポートに入射しないように、遮光溝316i~316jを設ける。遮光溝316jは、他の遮光溝と同じ方向、例えば出力導波路315の光軸と45度の角度に設置されるが、遮光溝316iは、出力導波路315を挟んで反対側に、遮光溝316jと90度の角度で形成する。すなわち、出力導波路315を挟んで「ハ」の字の形状に配置し、出力導波路315からの光の出射方向とは異なる方向に、迷光を反射するように配置する。
さらに、合波部214の捨てポートを介して漏れ出した迷光を除去するために、合波部314の周囲に、入力導波路311の光軸と45度の角度、すなわち他の遮光溝と平行な複数の遮光溝を設ける。なお、遮光溝は、所定の長さの遮光溝を複数形成してもよい、RGBカプラ310に形成されている導波路を横切らない限り、長く形成してもよい。
このような構成により、迷光は、PD302と結合する面とは反対の面に反射され、かつ、出力導波路315に結合されるポートに入射しないように反射されるので、モニタリングの精度を向上することができる。
(実施例2)
図8に、第3の実施形態の実施例2にかかるモニタリング機能付き光源を示す。実施例1では、第1~第3のモニタリング用導波路3231~3233のそれぞれにPD3021~3023を接続したが、実施例3においては、1つのPD302により受光する。PDの受光面における有効受光領域が広ければ、3本のモニタリング用導波路を、RGBカプラ310の端面において5~20μm間隔に配置すれば、3本のうちのいずれのモニタリング用導波路3231~3233から出射された光もPD302で受光することができる。
図8に、第3の実施形態の実施例2にかかるモニタリング機能付き光源を示す。実施例1では、第1~第3のモニタリング用導波路3231~3233のそれぞれにPD3021~3023を接続したが、実施例3においては、1つのPD302により受光する。PDの受光面における有効受光領域が広ければ、3本のモニタリング用導波路を、RGBカプラ310の端面において5~20μm間隔に配置すれば、3本のうちのいずれのモニタリング用導波路3231~3233から出射された光もPD302で受光することができる。
なお、R、G、Bの各色の光をそれぞれモニタリングする場合は、第1~第3のLD3011~3013を時分割で発光動作させ、PD302にてモニタリングすればよい。
実施例1と同様に、LD301と入力導波路311との接続端面に近い入力導波路311の両側に遮光溝316a~316dを設け、PD302とモニタリング用導波路313との接続端面に近いモニタリング用導波路313の両側に遮光溝316e~316fを設け、出力導波路315の出射端面に近い両側に遮光溝316i~316jを設ける。実施例1との相違点は、モニタリング用導波路をまとめたことにより、遮光溝を設置する空間が広がる。遮光溝は、細切れの遮光溝を多数設置するよりも、長い遮光溝を設置する方が、迷光の除去の効果が大きい。
(実施例3)
図9に、第3の実施形態の実施例3にかかるモニタリング機能付き光源を示す。実施例3では、合波部314の出力の近傍に分岐部312が設けられ、合波部314の出力の一部がモニタリング用導波路313を介してPD302に入力される。実施例3では、出力導波路315の出力を直接モニタリングすることがで、各色ごとのモニタリング用の回路を用意することなくモニタリングが可能である。このため、より小型な光源を実現できるとともに、合波部314の合波特性を把握しておくことにより、PD202のモニタリング値を用いて、光源としてのホワイトバランスを調整することが可能である。
図9に、第3の実施形態の実施例3にかかるモニタリング機能付き光源を示す。実施例3では、合波部314の出力の近傍に分岐部312が設けられ、合波部314の出力の一部がモニタリング用導波路313を介してPD302に入力される。実施例3では、出力導波路315の出力を直接モニタリングすることがで、各色ごとのモニタリング用の回路を用意することなくモニタリングが可能である。このため、より小型な光源を実現できるとともに、合波部314の合波特性を把握しておくことにより、PD202のモニタリング値を用いて、光源としてのホワイトバランスを調整することが可能である。
実施例1と同様に、LD301と入力導波路311との接続端面に近い入力導波路311の両側に遮光溝316a~316dを設け、PD302とモニタリング用導波路313との接続端面に近いモニタリング用導波路313の両側に遮光溝316e~316fを設け、出力導波路315の出射端面に近い両側に遮光溝316i~316jを設ける。モニタリング用導波路が出射端面の近くに移動することにより、さらに遮光溝を設置する空間が広がるので、長い遮光溝を設置することができ、迷光の除去の効果が大きい。
(その他の実施例)
図4に示した第2の実施形態において、RGBカプラ210に遮光溝を設けてもよい。LD201と入力導波路211との接続端面に近い入力導波路211の脇に、遮光溝を設けるとともに、出力導波路215の脇、およびPD202とモニタリング用導波路213との接続端面に近いモニタリング用導波路213の脇に、導波路を挟んで「ハ」の字の形状に遮光溝を配置する。さらに、入力導波路211の間、モニタリング用導波路213の間に複数の遮光溝を設けたり、合波部214の周囲に複数の遮光溝を設けることもできる。
図4に示した第2の実施形態において、RGBカプラ210に遮光溝を設けてもよい。LD201と入力導波路211との接続端面に近い入力導波路211の脇に、遮光溝を設けるとともに、出力導波路215の脇、およびPD202とモニタリング用導波路213との接続端面に近いモニタリング用導波路213の脇に、導波路を挟んで「ハ」の字の形状に遮光溝を配置する。さらに、入力導波路211の間、モニタリング用導波路213の間に複数の遮光溝を設けたり、合波部214の周囲に複数の遮光溝を設けることもできる。

Claims (8)
- 複数の入力導波路から出力された光をそれぞれ分岐する複数の分岐部と、
前記複数の分岐部でそれぞれ分岐された一方の光を合波する合波部と、
前記合波部で合波された光を出力する出力導波路と、
前記複数の分岐部でそれぞれ分岐された他方の光を、それぞれ出力する複数のモニタリング用導波路と、
各々の入力導波路の両側に所定の間隔を空けて設けられた遮光溝であって、当該入力導波路に結合できなかった迷光が、前記複数のモニタリング用導波路の出射端面および前記出力導波路の出射端面とは異なる端面に反射されるように設けられた、複数の遮光溝と
を備えたことを特徴とする光合波回路。 - 前記複数の遮光溝は、前記複数の入力導波路の入射端面から光軸に沿って45度の角度で設けられることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の光合波回路。
- 前記複数のモニタリング用導波路の出射端面は、前記複数の入力導波路の入射端面および前記出力導波路の出射端面に垂直な端面であり、
前記遮光溝は、前記迷光を前記複数のモニタリング用導波路の出射端面とは反対の面に反射するように配置されていることを特徴とする請求項1または2に記載の光合波回路。 - 各々のモニタリング用導波路の両側に所定の間隔を空けて設けられた遮光溝であって、当該モニタリング用導波路の出射端面からの光の出射方向とは異なる方向に迷光を反射するように配置された複数の遮光溝をさらに備えたことを特徴とする請求項1または2に記載の光合波回路。
- 前記複数の遮光溝は、前記複数のモニタリング用導波路の前記出射方向に対して45度の角度で設けられることを特徴とする請求項4に記載の光合波回路。
- 前記出力導波路の両側に所定の間隔を空けて設けられた遮光溝であって、前記出力導波路からの光の出射方向とは異なる方向に迷光を反射するように配置された複数の遮光溝をさらに備えたことを特徴とする請求項1または2に記載の光合波回路。
- 前記複数の遮光溝は、前記出力導波路の光軸と45度の角度を有する第1の遮光溝と、該出力導波路を挟んで反対側に第1の遮光溝と90度の角度を有する第2の遮光溝とを含むことを特徴とする請求項6に記載の光合波回路。
- 前記合波部の周囲に設けられ、前記複数の遮光溝と平行な遮光溝をさらに複数備えたことを特徴とする請求項1または2に記載の光合波回路。
