一般にゲームソフトウェアは、初版がリリースされた後、シナリオやキャラクタなどが追加されて、ゲームの世界観が広げられていく。追加されたシナリオやキャラクタは、追加コンテンツとしてコンテンツサーバからユーザの端末装置に配信され、ユーザは、追加コンテンツを楽しめるようになっている。
現在のところユーザは、追加コンテンツの取得を、もっぱらコンテンツサーバからの配信に頼るしかない。そこで追加コンテンツを、別の形態で流通させる仕組みを構築することが望まれている。

入力装置6は複数のプッシュ式の操作ボタンや、アナログ量を入力できるアナログスティック、回動式ボタンなどの複数の入力部を有して構成される。撮像装置であるカメラ7は出力装置4の近傍に設けられ、出力装置4周辺の空間を撮像する。情報処理装置10は、カメラ7の撮像画像からユーザを顔認証して、ログインさせる機能をもつ。
図2は、情報処理装置10の機能ブロックを示す。情報処理装置10は、メイン電源ボタン20、電源ON用LED21、スタンバイ用LED22、システムコントローラ24、クロック26、デバイスコントローラ30、メディアドライブ32、USBモジュール34、フラッシュメモリ36、無線通信モジュール38、有線通信モジュール40、サブシステム50およびメインシステム60を有して構成される。
メインシステム60は、メインCPU(Central Processing Unit)、主記憶装置であるメモリおよびメモリコントローラ、GPU(Graphics Processing Unit)などを備える。GPUはゲームプログラムの演算処理に主として利用される。これらの機能はシステムオンチップとして構成されて、1つのチップ上に形成されてよい。メインCPUは、補助記憶装置2やROM媒体44に記録されたゲームソフトウェアを実行する機能をもつ。
サブシステム50は、サブCPU、主記憶装置であるメモリおよびメモリコントローラなどを備え、GPUを備えず、ゲームソフトウェアを実行する機能をもたない。サブCPUの回路ゲート数は、メインCPUの回路ゲート数よりも少なく、サブCPUの動作消費電力は、メインCPUの動作消費電力よりも少ない。サブCPUは、メインCPUがスタンバイ状態にある間においても動作し、消費電力を低く抑えるべく、その処理機能を制限されている。
メイン電源ボタン20は、ユーザからの操作入力が行われるボタンであって、情報処理装置10の筐体の前面に設けられ、情報処理装置10のメインシステム60への電源供給をオンまたはオフするために操作される。電源ON用LED21は、メイン電源ボタン20がオンされたときに点灯し、スタンバイ用LED22は、メイン電源ボタン20がオフされたときに点灯する。
システムコントローラ24は、ユーザによるメイン電源ボタン20の押下を検出する。クロック26はリアルタイムクロックであって、現在の日時情報を生成し、システムコントローラ24やサブシステム50およびメインシステム60に供給する。
デバイスコントローラ30は、サウスブリッジのようにデバイス間の情報の受け渡しを実行するLSI(Large-Scale Integrated Circuit)として構成される。図示のように、デバイスコントローラ30には、システムコントローラ24、メディアドライブ32、USBモジュール34、フラッシュメモリ36、無線通信モジュール38、有線通信モジュール40、サブシステム50およびメインシステム60などのデバイスが接続される。デバイスコントローラ30は、それぞれのデバイスの電気特性の違いやデータ転送速度の差を吸収し、データ転送のタイミングを制御する。
メディアドライブ32は、ゲームなどのアプリケーションソフトウェアを記録したROM媒体44を装着して駆動し、ROM媒体44からプログラムやデータなどを読み出すドライブ装置である。ROM媒体44は、光ディスクや光磁気ディスク、ブルーレイディスクなどの読出専用の記録メディアである。
USBモジュール34は、外部機器とUSBケーブルで接続するモジュールである。USBモジュール34は補助記憶装置2およびカメラ7とUSBケーブルで接続してもよい。フラッシュメモリ36は、内部ストレージを構成する補助記憶装置である。無線通信モジュール38は、Bluetooth(登録商標)プロトコルやIEEE802.11プロトコルなどの通信プロトコルで、たとえば入力装置6と無線通信する。有線通信モジュール40は、外部機器と有線通信し、AP8を介してネットワークに接続する。
メディアドライブ32はROM媒体44を装着されてROM媒体44からデータを読み出す。なおメディアドライブ32に装着される記録媒体はROM媒体44に限られるものではなく、書込可能な記録媒体であってもよい。HDDやフラッシュメモリである補助記憶装置2のデータ読出速度とメディアドライブ32のデータ読出速度を比較すると、補助記憶装置2のデータ読出速度の方が、メディアドライブ32のデータ読出速度よりも相対的に高速となる。そこで実施例の情報処理装置10は、ROM媒体44からデータを補助記憶装置2にコピーし、補助記憶装置2にコピーしたファイルを読み出すことで、ゲームを実行するようにしている。
図3は、ROM媒体44の記録ファイルを説明するための図である。ROM媒体44は、ゲームソフトウェア、パッチファイル、追加コンテンツファイルを記録して構成されている。
ゲームソフトウェアは、起動ファイル、ゲームプログラムなどのゲームを実行するためのリソースファイル群、および情報処理装置10のOSが使用するファイル群を含んで構成される。ゲームプログラムは、ゲームの実行に必要なプログラムであり、ゲームプログラムを走らせることでゲームが進行する。起動ファイルは、ゲームプログラムを起動するためのプログラムであり、起動ファイルを実行すると、ゲームプログラムが呼び出されて実行される。OSが使用するファイル群は、たとえば、情報処理装置10におけるメニュー画面に表示されるゲームアイコン画像などを含む。
ゲームソフトウェアはツリー型ディレクトリ構造を有し、最上層のルートディレクトリに起動ファイルが含まれる。下層のサブディレクトリは、ファイルの種類ごとに分類され、たとえば3Dモデル用のサブディレクトリ、テクスチャ用のサブディレクトリ、スクリプト用のサブディレクトリなどが形成されている。各サブディレクトリには、対応するファイルが含まれており、3Dモデル用サブディレクトリには複数の3Dモデルファイルが、テクスチャ用サブディレクトリには複数のテクスチャファイルが、スクリプト用サブディレクトリには複数のスクリプトファイルが含まれる。たとえばテクスチャ用のサブディレクトリには、ゲームのシナリオ1用のテクスチャファイル、シナリオ2用のテクスチャファイル、シナリオ3用のテクスチャファイルなどが含まれている。
ゲームソフトウェアは、論理的に複数のグループに分割される。論理的に分割された各グループには、複数のサブディレクトリに含まれるファイルが属し、すなわち各グループは、種類の異なるファイルによって構成され、情報処理装置10がゲーム中のシーンやステージなどの特定の単位を実行するのに必要なファイルが属するように設定されている。
グループの先頭となる第1グループには、ゲームソフトウェアの起動に必要なプログラムファイルおよびデータファイルが属している。したがって情報処理装置10は、第1グループに属する全てのファイルを補助記憶装置2にコピーすれば、後続の第2グループ以降のファイルをコピーする前に、ゲームソフトウェアを起動することが可能となる。なお情報処理装置10は、第1グループに属する全てのファイルを取得して、ゲームソフトウェアを起動した後に、後続のグループに属するファイルをバックグランドで補助記憶装置2にコピーする。このようにゲームの実行に必要な最低限のファイルをまず最初に補助記憶装置2にコピーし、それらのファイルが揃った時点でゲームを実行可能とすることで、プレイ開始までのユーザの待ち時間を短くできる。
パッチファイルは、ゲームソフトウェアの実行時にゲームソフトウェアに適用されるものであり、バグを修正したゲームプログラムや、ゲーム機能を変更するためのデータファイルなどを含む。パッチファイルはゲームソフトウェアと同じファイル構成を有し、たとえばゲームソフトウェアに含まれるファイルと置き換えられるべきファイルを含んで構成されてよい。
追加コンテンツファイルは、シナリオやステージ、キャラクタ、アイテム、音楽などの新たなコンテンツに関するデータファイルを含む。一般に追加コンテンツファイルは、ゲーム世界観を拡張して、新たな楽しみをユーザに与えるためにゲームメーカにより提供される。そのためゲームの初版のROM媒体44には追加コンテンツファイルは含まれておらず、同一ゲームに関して初版以降にリリースされるROM媒体44に、追加コンテンツファイルは含まれることになる。
図4は、情報処理装置10の構成を示す。メインシステム60は、記録処理部100、表示処理部102およびアプリケーション実行部104を備える。記録処理部100は、ROM媒体44に記録されているファイルを、補助記憶装置2にコピーする機能をもつ。これらの構成は、ハードウエアコンポーネントでいえば、任意のコンピュータのCPU、メモリ、メモリにロードされたプログラム、ストレージなどによって実現されるが、ここではそれらの連携によって実現される機能ブロックを描いている。したがって、これらの機能ブロックがハードウエアのみ、ソフトウエアのみ、またはそれらの組合せによっていろいろな形で実現できることは、当業者には理解されるところである。なおこれらの構成は、OSの機能により実現されてよい。
まずユーザAが、新規購入した図3に示すROM媒体44、すなわちゲームソフトウェアを構成するファイル、パッチファイルおよび追加コンテンツファイルを記録したROM媒体44を、メディアドライブ32に装着する。メディアドライブ32にROM媒体44が装着されると、記録処理部100は、ROM媒体44に記録されているファイルを補助記憶装置にコピーする。
このとき、記録処理部100は、パッチファイル、追加コンテンツファイル、ゲームソフトウェアを構成するファイルの順番に、ROM媒体44からデータを読み出して、補助記憶装置2にコピーする。つまり記録処理部100は最初にパッチファイルをコピーし、パッチファイルをコピーした後、追加コンテンツファイルをコピーする。記録処理部100は、追加コンテンツファイルをコピーした後、ゲームソフトウェアを構成するファイルをコピーする。なお記録処理部100は、補助記憶装置2に同じ追加コンテンツファイルが既に存在する場合には、当該追加コンテンツファイルをコピーしない。
このように記録処理部100は、パッチファイル、追加コンテンツファイルの順番にコピーした後、ゲームソフトウェアのコピーを開始する。記録処理部100がゲームソフトウェアのうち、第1グループに属するファイルを全てコピーすると、第2グループ以降のファイルをコピーする前に、アプリケーション実行部104が、ゲームソフトウェアを起動可能な状態となる。そのためゲームソフトウェアの前に、パッチファイル、追加コンテンツファイルをコピーしておくことで、第1グループに属するファイルが全てコピーされた時点で、アプリケーション実行部104が、ゲームソフトウェアを起動できるようになる。つまりアプリケーション実行部104は、第1グループのファイルが補助記憶装置2にコピーされると、パッチをゲームソフトウェアに適用し、追加コンテンツファイルを利用した状態で、ゲームソフトウェアを実行できる。
なおROM媒体44には、ゲームを起動するための権利情報が記録されている。そのためアプリケーション実行部104は、ROM媒体44のファイルを全て補助記憶装置2にコピーした後であっても、ROM媒体44がメディアドライブ32に装着された状態でなければ、ゲームを実行できない。補助記憶装置2にコピーしたゲームソフトウェアを実行するためには、ROM媒体44がメディアドライブ32に装着されている必要がある。
なお図3に示すROM媒体44は、1種類のゲームソフトウェアを記録していることを前提としている。このケースで記録処理部100は、上記したように、ROM媒体44がメディアドライブ32に装着されると、コピー可能な全てのファイルの自動コピーを実行する。
なおROM媒体44が、複数種類のゲームソフトウェアを記録していることもある。記録処理部100は、複数種類のゲームソフトウェアを記録しているROM媒体44がメディアドライブ32に装着されたとき、全てのファイルを補助記憶装置2に自動コピーするようには振る舞わない。このケースで記録処理部100は、複数種類のゲームソフトウェアを記録しているROM媒体44がメディアドライブ32に装着されて、ユーザAによるゲームの選択操作を受け付けると、選択されたゲームソフトウェアのファイルと、当該ゲームソフトウェアに適用するパッチファイルと、当該アプリケーションソフトウェアが利用する追加コンテンツファイルのコピーを実行する。つまり記録処理部100は、ROM媒体44が複数種類のゲームソフトウェアを記録している場合には、ユーザAによってゲームが選択されたときに、当該選択されたゲームに関するファイルをコピーするようにしている。
なお1つの追加コンテンツが、複数のゲームによって利用可能な場合がある。たとえば追加コンテンツAが、ROM媒体44に記録されているゲームソフトウェアB、ゲームソフトウェアCの双方で利用される場合である。ユーザによりゲームBが選択されると、記録処理部100は、ゲームBに関するファイルを補助記憶装置2にコピーする。このとき追加コンテンツAはコピーされた状態となる。そのため、その後に記録処理部100が、ゲームソフトウェアCに関するファイルをコピーするとき、追加コンテンツAはコピー済であるため、再度追加コンテンツAをコピーする必要はない。
なおユーザAが、同一ゲームの追加コンテンツを、コンテンツサーバからダウンロードしていることがある。補助記憶装置2に、コンテンツサーバからダウンロードした同一ゲームの追加コンテンツファイルが記憶されている場合、ROM媒体44がメディアドライブ32に装着されている状態で、ゲームソフトウェアは、ROM媒体44から補助記憶装置2にコピーされた追加コンテンツファイル、およびコンテンツサーバから補助記憶装置にダウンロードした追加コンテンツファイルの両方を利用可能である。たとえばユーザAがROM媒体44を取得した後、ゲームメーカが新たな追加コンテンツをリリースすると、ユーザAはコンテンツサーバから、新しい追加コンテンツファイルをダウンロードする。そのためゲームソフトウェアは、ROM媒体44からコピーされた追加コンテンツファイルだけでなく、コンテンツサーバからダウンロードした追加コンテンツファイルも利用できるように構成されている。
表示処理部102は、ROM媒体44がメディアドライブ32に装着されている状態で、ゲームソフトウェアが使用できる追加コンテンツをリスト表示する。
図5は、あるゲームに関して補助記憶装置2にインストールされている追加コンテンツリストの表示例を示す。ここでは、追加コンテンツとして、ステージ10~13のシナリオファイルがインストールされている。

ここで表示処理部102は、ROM媒体44から補助記憶装置2にコピーした追加コンテンツに、ROM媒体44からコピーした追加コンテンツであることを示す情報を表示する。ここではステージ10、11の追加コンテンツに、ディスクマーク108が付加されている。これによりユーザAは、ステージ10、11の追加コンテンツが、ROM媒体44から取得されたものであることを認識できる。
なおステージ12、13の追加コンテンツには、ディスクマーク108が付加されていない。したがってユーザAは、ステージ12、13の追加コンテンツが、コンテンツサーバからダウンロードして取得されたものであることを認識できる。
表示処理部102は、ユーザAが使用できない追加コンテンツには、ロックマーク110を付加して表示する。コンテンツサーバからダウンロードされた追加コンテンツの使用権は、ダウンロードしたユーザや、その家族などの限定したユーザが有しており、それ以外のユーザに使用権はない。そのため表示処理部102は、ユーザAが使用できない追加コンテンツにロックマーク110を付加して、使用できないことをユーザAに認識させる必要がある。
以上の実施例は例示であり、それらの各構成要素や各処理プロセスの組合せにいろいろな変形例が可能なこと、またそうした変形例も本発明の範囲にあることは当業者に理解されるところである。実施例では、アプリケーションの例としてゲームを示したが、それ以外のアプリケーションであってもよい。

Claims (8)
- 情報処理装置であって、
アプリケーションソフトウェアを構成するファイルおよび追加コンテンツファイルを記録した記録媒体が装着されるドライブ装置と、
記録媒体に記録されているファイルを補助記憶装置にコピーする記録処理部と、を備え、
前記記録処理部は、追加コンテンツファイルを補助記憶装置にコピーした後、アプリケーションソフトウェアを構成するファイルを補助記憶装置にコピーする、
ことを特徴とする情報処理装置。 - 補助記憶装置に、コンテンツサーバからダウンロードした同一アプリケーションの追加コンテンツファイルが記憶されている場合、記録媒体が前記ドライブ装置に装着されている状態で、アプリケーションソフトウェアは、記録媒体から補助記憶装置にコピーされた追加コンテンツファイル、およびコンテンツサーバから補助記憶装置にダウンロードした追加コンテンツファイルの両方を利用可能である、
ことを特徴とする請求項1に記載の情報処理装置。 - 記録媒体が前記ドライブ装置に装着されている状態で、アプリケーションソフトウェアが使用できる追加コンテンツをリスト表示する表示処理部を、さらに備える、
ことを特徴とする請求項1または2に記載の情報処理装置。 - 前記表示処理部は、記録媒体から補助記憶装置にコピーした追加コンテンツに、記録媒体からコピーした追加コンテンツであることを示す情報を表示する、
ことを特徴とする請求項3に記載の情報処理装置。 - 前記記録処理部は、一種類のアプリケーションソフトウェアを記録している記録媒体が前記ドライブ装置に装着されると、コピー可能な全てのファイルの自動コピーを実行し、
前記記録処理部は、複数種類のアプリケーションソフトウェアを記録している記録媒体が前記ドライブ装置に装着されて、ユーザによるアプリケーションの選択操作を受け付けると、選択されたアプリケーションソフトウェアのファイルと、当該アプリケーションソフトウェアが利用する追加コンテンツファイルのコピーを実行する、
ことを特徴とする請求項1から4のいずれかに記載の情報処理装置。 - 記録媒体から補助記憶装置にファイルをコピーする方法であって、
アプリケーションソフトウェアを構成するファイルおよび追加コンテンツファイルを記録した記録媒体から、追加コンテンツファイルを読み出して、補助記憶装置にコピーするステップと、
追加コンテンツファイルのコピー終了後、当該記録媒体から、アプリケーションソフトウェアを構成するファイルを読み出して、補助記憶装置にコピーするステップと、
を有することを特徴とするファイルコピー方法。 - コンピュータに、
アプリケーションソフトウェアを構成するファイルおよび追加コンテンツファイルを記録した記録媒体から、追加コンテンツファイルを読み出して、補助記憶装置にコピーする機能と、
追加コンテンツファイルのコピー終了後、当該記録媒体から、アプリケーションソフトウェアを構成するファイルを読み出して、補助記憶装置にコピーする機能と、
を実現させるためのプログラム。 - アプリケーションソフトウェアを構成するファイルおよび追加コンテンツファイルを記録した記録媒体であって、
当該記録媒体がドライブ装置に装着されたとき、補助記憶装置にコピーするために追加コンテンツファイルが読み出された後、アプリケーションソフトウェアを構成するファイルが読み出される、
