Abstract

 簡易な方法で逆電子移動が防止され、発電効率が著しく改善された色素増感型太陽電池を提供することを目的とする。基材、および上記基材上に形成された第1電極層を有する色素増感型太陽電池用基材と、上記色素増感型太陽電池用基材に対向するように配置され、電極としての機能を備える対電極基材と、上記色素増感型太陽電池用基材および上記対電極基材の間に形成された電解質層と、上記色素増感型太陽電池用基材または上記対電極基材のいずれか一方に積層され、かつ上記電解質層と接するように形成されており、表面に色素増感剤が担持された金属酸化物半導体微粒子を含む多孔質層と、を有する色素増感型太陽電池であって、上記電解質層と上記多孔質層の幅が異なっており、かつ前記シール材が上記電解質層および多孔質層の端部を覆い、さらに上記多孔質層が積層された基材の表面に上記電解質層が接しないように形成されていることを特徴とする色素増感型太陽電池を提供することにより、上記課題を解決する。

Description

色素増感型太陽電池
 本発明は、色素増感型太陽電池に関するものである。
 近年、二酸化炭素の増加が原因とされる地球温暖化等の環境問題が深刻となり、世界的にその対策が進められている。中でも環境に対する負荷が小さく、クリーンなエネルギー源として、太陽光エネルギーを利用した太陽電池に関する積極的な研究開発が進められている。このような太陽電池としては、単結晶シリコン太陽電池、多結晶シリコン太陽電池、アモルファスシリコン太陽電池、および化合物半導体太陽電池などが既に実用化されているが、これらの太陽電池は製造コストが高い等の問題がある。そこで、環境負荷が小さく、かつ製造コストを削減できる太陽電池として、色素増感型太陽電池が注目され研究開発が進められている。
 色素増感型太陽電池の一般的な構成の一例を図7に示す。図7(a)に例示するように、一般的な色素増感型太陽電池100は、基材111上に、第1電極層112が積層された色素増感型太陽電池用基材110と、電極としての機能を有する対電極基材120との間に、色素増感剤を担持した金属酸化物半導体微粒子を含む多孔質層102および電解質層101がシール材103の内側に形成された構成を有するものである。そして、多孔質層102における金属酸化物半導体微粒子の表面に吸着した色素増感剤が、基材111側から太陽光を受光することによって励起され、励起された電子が第1電極層へ伝導し、外部回路を通じて対電極基材へ伝導される。その後、酸化還元対を介して色素増感剤の基底準位に電子が戻ることよって発電するものである。このような色素増感型太陽電池としては、上記多孔質層を多孔質二酸化チタンから構成し、色素増感剤の含有量を増加させたグレッチェルセルが代表的であり、発電効率の高い色素増感型太陽電池として広く研究の対象となっている。なお、色素増感型太陽電池としては、図7(b)に例示するように、多孔質層102が対電極基材120側に接するように形成された、いわゆる‘逆構造セル型’の構成を有するものも知られている。
 ところで、上述したような色素増感型太陽電池においては、その発電効率を低下させる要因の一つとして「逆電子移動」という問題がある。この逆電子移動は、電極から電解質層へ電子が流れてしまう現象を意味するものである。例えば、図7(a)に例示した色素増感型太陽電池を例に挙げれば、逆電子移動とは、第1電極層112から電解質層101へ電子が流れてしまう現象であり、図7(b)に例示した色素増感型太陽電池を例に挙げれば、対電極基材120から電解質層101へ電子が流れてしまう現象を意味するものである。
 このような逆電子移動を防止する方法としては、例えば、図7(a)に示す色素増感型太陽電池を例に挙げれば、第1電極層を積層した基材、もしくは第1電極層と多孔質層を積層した基材を、四塩化チタン溶液やチタンテトライソプロポキシド溶液に浸し、第1電極層および多孔質層表面に緻密な酸化チタン層を形成することにより、電解質層と第1電極層とが接することを防止する方法が知られている(例えば、特許文献1~2)。また、第1電極層の表面を覆うように多孔質層を形成する方法も知られている(例えば、特許文献3)。しかしながら、前者の方法では、四塩化チタン由来の層を形成するためには高熱での加熱処理を要するため、このような層を形成する場合には基板としてフレキシブル性を有する樹脂製基板を用いることができないという欠点があった。また、後者の方法では、多孔質層はその名の通り多孔質体となっているため、液体の電解質層を用いると電解液が漏れてしまうという致命的な問題点があった。
 このようなことから、逆電子移動については、それが色素増感型太陽電池の発電効率を低下させてしまうことについては周知であったが、これを防止する有効な手段は確立されていなかった。

 本発明者らは、逆電子移動を巡るこのような状況に鑑みて、その有効な防止手段について鋭意検討した結果、次のようなことを見出した。図7(a)に例示した色素増感型太陽電池を例に挙げて説明すると、逆電子移動は電解質層と第1電極層とが接するところで生じるところ、通常の構造を有する色素増感型太陽電池において第1電極層と電解質層とが接する箇所としては、電解質層が多孔質層を介して第1電極層に間接的に接する多孔質層と第1電極層の界面(図7(a)中、Aで示す界面)、および電解質層と第1電極層とが直接的に接触する電解質層と第1電極層との界面(図7(a)中、Bで示す界面)に限られることを明らかにした。そして、それらの界面の面積を比較すると前者の界面の方が後者の界面よりも圧倒的に面積が広いため、逆電子移動を防止するには前者の界面を減少させることが効率的であると予測した。しかしながら、本発明者らがさらに深く検討した結果、電解質層と第1電極層との界面は、第1電極層と多孔質層との界面と比較すればごく微小な面積しか有さないが、当該電解質層と第1電極層との界面こそが、逆電子移動により発電効率が低下する主たる要因であることをが明らかとした。そこで、当該界面での逆電子移動を防止することにより、著しく発電効率を改善することができることを見出した。
 このことは、図7(b)に例示した逆構造セル型の色素増感型太陽電池においても同様に当てはまり、電解質層と対電極基材とが接する界面における逆電子移動が発電効率を低下させる主たる要因であり、当該界面での逆電子移動を防止することにより著しく発電効率を改善することができることを見出した。
 そして、第1電極層または対電極基材と電解質層とが直接的に接することがないように、図8(a)、(b)に示すように、多孔質層102および電解質層101の端部並びに第1電極層112あるいは対電極基材120の表面を覆うようにシール材103を形成することを試みたが、単にこのようにシール材を形成するのみでは、なおシール材と多孔質層との境界に染み込んだ電解質層が第1電極層あるいは対電極基材に達してしまい、逆電子移動を完全に防止することができないことが分かった。
 本発明はこのような状況および検討経過に基づいてなされたものであり、簡易な方法で逆電子移動を防止し、発電効率が著しく改善された色素増感型太陽電池を提供することを目的とするものである。
 上記課題を解決するために本発明は、基材、および上記基材上に形成された第1電極層を有する色素増感型太陽電池用基材と、上記色素増感型太陽電池用基材に対向するように配置され、電極としての機能を備える対電極基材と、上記色素増感型太陽電池用基材および上記対電極基材の間に形成された電解質層と、上記色素増感型太陽電池用基材の第1電極層上に積層され、かつ上記電解質層と接するように形成されており、表面に色素増感剤が担持された金属酸化物半導体微粒子を含む多孔質層と、上記電解質層を封止するように形成されたシール材とを有する色素増感型太陽電池であって、上記電解質層と上記多孔質層の幅が異なっており、かつ上記シール材が上記電解質層および多孔質層の端部を覆い、さらに上記第1電極層に上記電解質層が接しないように形成されていることを特徴とする色素増感型太陽電池を提供する。
 本発明によれば、上記シール材が上記電解質層および多孔質層の端部を覆い、さらに上記第1電極層に上記電解質層が接しないように形成されていることにより、本発明の色素増感型太陽電池において電解質層が第1電極層に直接的に接する箇所(図7(a)中、Bで示す界面)をなくすことができる。
 また、上記電解質層と上記多孔質層との幅が異なっていることにより、多孔質層とシール材との界面距離を長くすることができるため、電解質層がシール材と多孔質層の隙間に染み込んだとしても第1電極層に到達することを防止することができる。このため、本発明によれば電解質層と第1電極層とが直接的に接することによる逆電子移動を防止できる。
 このようなことから本発明によれば、簡易な方法で逆電子移動を防止し、発電効率が著しく改善された色素増感型太陽電池を得ることができる。
 また本発明は、基材、および上記基材上に形成された第1電極層を有する色素増感型太陽電池用基材と、上記色素増感型太陽電池用基材に対向するように配置され、電極としての機能を備える対電極基材と、上記色素増感型太陽電池用基材および上記対電極基材の間に形成された電解質層と、上記対電極基材上に積層され、かつ上記電解質層と接するように形成されており、表面に色素増感剤が担持された金属酸化物半導体微粒子を含む多孔質層と、上記電解質層を封止するように形成されたシール材とを有する色素増感型太陽電池であって、上記電解質層と上記多孔質層の幅が異なっており、かつ上記シール材が上記電解質層および多孔質層の端部を覆い、さらに上記対電極基材の表面に上記電解質層が接しないように形成されていることを特徴とする色素増感型太陽電池を提供する。
 本発明によれば、上記シール材が上記電解質層および多孔質層の端部を覆い、さらに上記対電極基材に上記電解質層が接しないように形成されていることにより、本発明の色素増感型太陽電池において電解質層が対電極基材に直接的に接する箇所(図7(b)中、Bで示す界面)をなくすことができる。
 また、上記電解質層と上記多孔質層との幅が異なっていることにより、多孔質層とシール材との界面距離を長くすることができるため、電解質層がシール材と多孔質層の隙間に染み込んだとしても対電極基材に到達することを防止することができる。このため、本発明によれば電解質層と対電極基材とが直接的に接することによる逆電子移動を防止できる。
 このようなことから本発明によれば、簡易な方法で逆電子移動を防止し、発電効率が著しく改善された色素増感型太陽電池を得ることができる。
 本発明においては、上記電解質層の幅が上記多孔質層の幅よりも狭いことが好ましい。これにより、本発明の色素増感型太陽電池を簡易な工程で製造することが可能になるからである。
 また本発明においては、上記電解質層と上記多孔質層との幅の差が0.5mm~5mmの範囲内であることが好ましい。電解質層と多孔質層との幅の差が上記範囲よりも少ないと、色素増感型太陽電池を作製することが困難になる場合があるからである。また多孔質層とシール材との界面距離が短くなり、電解質層が多孔質層とシール材との隙間に染み込んで第1電極層または対電極基材に到達し、逆電子移動を完全に防止できなくなくなる可能性があるからである。さらに、電解質層と多孔質層との幅の差が上記範囲よりも大きいと発電に寄与する多孔質層の面積が少なくなり、逆電子移動を防止したとしても著しい発電効率の向上が望めなくなる可能性があるからである。
 本発明の色素増感型太陽電池は、簡易な方法で逆電子移動を防止し、発電効率が著しく改善され、優れた特性を有するという効果を奏する。

 以下、本発明の色素増感型太陽電池について詳細に説明する。
 本発明の色素増感型太陽電池は、多孔質層が形成されている位置に応じて、2つの態様に大別することができる。
 したがって、以下、各態様に分けて本発明の色素増感型太陽電池について説明する。
 A.第1態様の色素増感型太陽電池
1.色素増感型太陽電池
 本発明の第1態様の色素増感型太陽電池は、基材、および上記基材上に形成された第1電極層を有する色素増感型太陽電池用基材と、上記色素増感型太陽電池用基材に対向するように配置され、電極としての機能を備える対電極基材と、上記色素増感型太陽電池用基材および上記対電極基材の間に形成された電解質層と、上記色素増感型太陽電池用基材の第1電極層上に積層され、かつ上記電解質層と接するように形成されており、表面に色素増感剤が担持された金属酸化物半導体微粒子を含む多孔質層と、上記電解質層を封止するように形成されたシール材とを有するものであって、上記電解質層と上記多孔質層の幅が異なっており、かつ上記シール材が上記電解質層および多孔質層の端部を覆い、さらに上記第1電極層に上記電解質層が接しないように形成されていることを特徴とするものである。
 このような本態様の色素増感型太陽電池について図を参照しながら説明する。図1は本態様の色素増感型太陽電池の一例を示す概略断面図である。図1に例示するように、本態様の色素増感型太陽電池10は、基材1a、および上記基材1a上に形成された第1電極層1bを有する色素増感型太陽電池用基材1と、上記色素増感型太陽電池用基材1に対向するように配置され、電極としての機能を備える対電極基材2と、上記色素増感型太陽電池用基材1および上記対電極基材2の間に形成された電解質層3と、上記色素増感型太陽電池用基材1の第1電極層1b上に積層され、かつ上記電解質層3と接するように形成されており、表面に色素増感剤が担持された金属酸化物半導体微粒子を含む多孔質層4と、上記電解質層3を封止するように形成されたシール材5とを有するものである。
 このような例において、本態様の色素増感型太陽電池10は、上記電解質層3と上記多孔質層4の幅が異なっており、かつシール材5が上記電解質層3および多孔質層4の端部を覆い、さらに上記第1電極層1bに上記電解質層3が接しないように形成されていることを特徴とするものである。
 本態様によれば、上記シール材が上記電解質層および多孔質層の端部を覆い、さらに上記第1電極層に上記電解質層が接しないように形成されていることにより、本態様の色素増感型太陽電池において電解質層が第1電極層に直接的に接する箇所(図7(a)中、Bで示す界面)をなくすことができる。
 また、上記電解質層と上記多孔質層との幅が異なっていることにより、多孔質層とシール材との界面距離を長くすることができるため、電解質層が多孔質層とシール材との隙間に染み込んだとしても第1電極層に到達することを防止することができる。このため、本態様によれば電解質層と第1電極層とが直接的に接することによる逆電子移動を防止できる。
 このようなことから本態様によれば、簡易な方法で逆電子移動を防止し、発電効率が著しく改善された色素増感型太陽電池を得ることができる。
 本態様の色素増感型太陽電池は、上記多孔質層と上記電解質層との幅が異なっていることを特徴の一つとするものである。
 本態様において、電解質層と多孔質層との幅が異なる態様について図を参照しながら説明する。図2は本態様の色素増感型太陽電池において、多孔質層と電解質層との幅が異なる態様について説明する概略断面図である。図2に例示するように、本態様の色素増感型太陽電池において多孔質層と電解質層の幅が異なる態様としては、多孔質層4の幅が電解質層3の幅よりも広い態様であってもよく(図2(a))、あるいは電解質層3の幅が多孔質層4の幅よりも広い態様であってもよい(図2(b))。
 本態様においては、多孔質層と電解質層との幅が異なる態様として、上記のいずれの態様であっても好適に用いることができるが、通常、電解質層の幅が多孔質層の幅よりも狭い態様であることが好ましい。これにより、本態様の色素増感型太陽電池を簡易な工程で製造することが可能になるからである。
 また本態様における上記電解質層と上記多孔質層との幅の差としては、多孔質層とシール材との界面距離を長くし、電解質層が多孔質層とシール材との隙間に染み込んだとしても第1電極層に到達することを防止できる範囲内であれば特に限定されるものではない。具体的な幅の差は電解質層の形態や組成等によって決定されるものであり、一義的に決定されるものではないが、なかでも本態様においては0.5mm~5mmの範囲内であることが好ましく、1mm~4mmの範囲内であることがより好ましく、1mm~2mmの範囲内であることがさらに好ましい。電解質層と多孔質層との幅の差が上記範囲よりも小さいと、多孔質層とシール材との界面距離が短くなり、電解質層が多孔質層とシール材との隙間に染み込んで第1電極層に到達し、電解質層が第1電極層に直接的に接触してしまう場合があるからである。また、電解質層と多孔質層との幅の差が上記範囲よりも大きいと発電に寄与する多孔質層の面積が少なくなり、逆電子移動を防止したとしても著しい発電効率の向上が望めなくなる可能性があるからである。
 なお、上記電解質層と多孔質層との幅の差は、任意の一端における電解質層の端部から多孔質層の端部までの距離を意味するものである。図3は、上記電解質層と多孔質層との幅の差について説明する概略図である。図3(a)、(b)に示すように、本態様における上記電解質層3と多孔質層4との幅の差は、電解質層3の端部から多孔質層4の端部までの距離Xを意味するものである。
2.電解質層
 次に、本態様に用いられる電解質層について説明する。本態様に用いられる電解質層は、本態様の色素増感型太陽電池において色素増感型太陽電池用基材と対電極基材との間に形成されるものである。また、本態様に用いられる電解質層は、その幅が多孔質層の幅と異なるように形成されていることを特徴とするものである。
 本態様に用いられる電解質層は、ゲル状、固体状または液体状のいずれの形態からなる電解質層であってもよい。また、本態様に用いられる電解質層は酸化還元対を含有するものであってもよく、あるいは含有しないものであってもよい。酸化還元対が用いられる場合、本態様に用いられる酸化還元対としては、一般的に色素増感型太陽電池の電解質層に用いられているものであれば特に限定されるものではないが、なかでもヨウ素およびヨウ化物の組合せ、臭素および臭化物の組合せであることが好ましい。
 上記酸化還元対として本態様に用いられるヨウ素およびヨウ化物の組合せとしては、例えば、LiI、NaI、KI、CaI等の金属ヨウ化物と、Iとの組合せを挙げることができる。
 さらに、上記臭素および臭化物の組合せとしては、例えば、LiBr、NaBr、KBr、CaBr等の金属臭化物と、Brとの組合せを挙げることができる。
 また、電解質層を液体状とする場合には、例えばアセトニトリル、メトキシアセトニトリル、炭酸プロピレンなどを溶媒とし、酸化還元対を含有させたものや、同じくイミダゾリウム塩をカチオンとするイオン性液体を溶媒とすることができる。
 一方、電解質層をゲル状とした場合には、物理ゲルと化学ゲルのいずれであってもよい。ここで、物理ゲルは物理的な相互作用で室温付近においてゲル化しているものであり、化学ゲルは架橋反応などにより化学結合でゲルを形成しているものである。
 また、固体状の電解質層としては、例えば、CuI、ポリピロール、ポリチオフェン等からなるものを挙げることができる。
3.多孔質層
 次に、本態様に用いられる多孔質層について説明する。本態様に用いられる多孔質層は、表面に色素増感剤が担持された金属酸化物半導体微粒子を含有するものであり、後述する色素増感型太陽電池用基材の第1電極層上に積層され、かつ上記電解質層に接するように形成されるものである。
(金属酸化物半導体微粒子)
 本態様に用いられる金属酸化物半導体微粒子としては、半導体特性を備える金属酸化物からなるものであれば特に限定されるものではない。本態様に用いられる金属酸化物半導体微粒子を構成する金属酸化物としては、例えば、TiO、ZnO、SnO、ITO、ZrO、MgO、Al、CeO、Bi、Mn、Y、WO、Ta、Nb、La等を挙げることができる。これらの金属酸化物半導体微粒子は、多孔性の多孔質層を形成するのに適しており、エネルギー変換効率の向上、コストの削減を図ることができるため本態様に好適に用いられる。
 本態様に用いられる金属酸化物半導体微粒子は、すべて同一の金属酸化物からなるものであってもよく、あるいは異なる金属酸化物からなるものが2種類以上用いられていてもよい。また、本態様に用いられる金属酸化物半導体微粒子は、一種をコア微粒子とし、他の金属酸化物半導体により、コア微粒子を包含してシェルを形成するコアシェル構造としてもよい。
 なかでも本態様においてはTiOからなる金属酸化物半導体微粒子を用いることが最も好ましい。TiOは特に半導体特性に優れるからである。
 本態様に用いられる金属酸化物半導体微粒子の平均粒径としては、多孔質層の比表面積を所望の範囲内にできる程度であれば特に限定されるものではないが、通常、1nm~10μmの範囲内が好ましく、特に10nm~1000nmの範囲内であることが好ましい。平均粒径が上記範囲よりも小さいと各々の金属酸化物半導体微粒子が凝集し二次粒子を形成してしまう場合があり、また平均粒径が上記範囲より大きいと、多孔質層が厚膜化してしまうだけではなく、多孔質層の多孔度、すなわち比表面積が減少してしまう可能性があるからである。ここで、多孔質層の比表面積が小さくなると、例えば、光電変換するのに十分な色素増感剤を多孔質層に担持させることが困難になる場合がある。
 なお、上記金属酸化物半導体微粒子の平均粒径は一次粒径を意味するものとする。
 また本態様においては、上記金属酸化物半導体微粒子としてすべて同一の平均粒径のものを用いてもよく、あるいは、平均粒径の異なる複数の金属酸化物半導体微粒子を2種類以上用いてもよい。平均粒径の異なる金属酸化物半導体微粒子を併用することにより、多孔質層における光散乱効果を高めることができ、本態様の色素増感型太陽電池をより発電効率に優れたものにできるという利点がある。
 本態様において、平均粒径の異なる金属酸化物半導体微粒子を2種類以上用いる場合、異なる平均粒径の組み合わせとしては、例えば、平均粒径が10nm~50nmの範囲内にある金属酸化物半導体微粒子と、平均粒径が50nm~800nmの範囲内にある金属酸化物半導体微粒子との組み合わせを例示することができる。
(色素増感剤)
 本態様に用いられる色素増感剤としては、光を吸収して起電力を生じさせることが可能なものであれば特に限定はされない。このような色素増感剤としては、有機色素または金属錯体色素を挙げることができる。上記有機色素としては、アクリジン系、アゾ系、インジゴ系、キノン系、クマリン系、メロシアニン系、フェニルキサンテン系の色素が挙げられる。本態様においてはこれらの有機色素の中でも、クマリン系色素を用いることが好ましい。また、上記金属錯体色素としてはルテニウム系色素を用いることが好ましく、特にルテニウム錯体であるルテニウムビピリジン色素およびルテニウムターピリジン色素を用いることが好ましい。このようなルテニウム錯体は吸収する光の波長範囲が広いため、光電変換できる光の波長領域を大幅に広げることができるからである。
(任意の成分)
 本態様に用いられる多孔質層には、上記金属酸化物半導体微粒子の他に任意の成分が含まれていてもよい。本態様に用いられる任意の成分としては、例えば、バインダー樹脂を挙げることができる。上記多孔質層にバインダー樹脂が含有されることにより、本態様に用いられる多孔質層を脆性の低いものにできるからである。
 本態様において多孔質層に用いることができるバインダー樹脂としては、多孔質層の脆性を所望の程度にできるものであれば特に限定されるものではない。もっとも、本態様においては、多孔質層が電解質層と接するように形成されることから電解質層に対する耐性を備えるバインダー樹脂が用いられることが必要になる。このようなバインダー樹脂としては、例えば、ポリビニルピロリドン、エチルセルロース、カプロラクタン等を挙げることができる。
 なお、本態様に用いられるバインダー樹脂は1種類のみであってもよく、あるいは2種類以上であってもよい。
(その他)
 本態様に用いられる多孔質層の厚みは、本態様の色素増感型太陽電池の用途に応じて、適宜決定できるものであり特に限定されるものではい。なかでも本態様における多孔質層の厚みは、通常、1μm~100μmの範囲内であることが好ましく、特に3μm~30μmの範囲内であることが好ましい。多孔質層の厚みが上記範囲よりも厚いと、多孔質層自体の凝集破壊が起りやすく、膜抵抗となりやすくなってしまう場合があるからである。また、多孔質層の厚みが上記範囲よりも薄いと厚みが均一な多孔質層を形成するのが困難となったり、色素増感剤が担持される量が少なくなり、太陽光を十分に吸収できないために性能不良になる可能性があるからである。
 本態様における多孔質層は単一の層からなる構成でもよく、また複数の層が積層された構成でもよい。複数の層が積層された構成を有する多孔質層としては、本態様に用いられる色素増感型太陽電池用基材の製造方法等に応じて任意の構成を適宜選択して採用することができる。このような構成としては、例えば、多孔質層が上記第1電極層と接する酸化物半導体層と、上記酸化物半導体層上に形成され、かつ上記酸化物半導体層よりも空孔率が高い介在層とからなる2層構造である態様を挙げることができる。多孔質層がこのような酸化物半導体層と介在層とからなる2層構造を有することにより、本態様に用いられる多孔質層を、いわゆる転写法により容易に作製することができるからである。すなわち、本態様に用いられる多孔質層は、耐熱基板上で焼成することにより色素増感型太陽電池用基材上に多孔質層を形成した後、これらの層を基材上に転写する方法によって作製することも可能であるところ、本態様における多孔質層を上述した酸化物半導体層と介在層とからなる2層構造とすることにより、多孔質層の性能を低下させることなく耐熱基板と多孔質層との密着力を低下させることが可能になる結果、転写方式により本態様に用いられる色素増感型太陽電池用基材を作製することが容易になるからである。
 多孔質層を上記酸化物半導体層と上記介在層との2層構造を有するものにする場合、酸化物半導体層と介在層との厚み比としては特に限定されるものではないが、なかでも酸化物半導体層の厚み:介在層の厚みが10:0.1~10:5の範囲内であることが好ましく、さらには10:0.1~10:3の範囲内であることが好ましい。
 上記酸化物半導体層の空孔率としては、10%~60%の範囲内であることが好ましく、中でも20%~50%の範囲内であることが好ましい。酸化物半導体層の空孔率が上記範囲よりも小さいと、例えば、多孔質層において太陽光を有効に吸収できなくなる可能性があるからである。また上記範囲よりも大きいと、多孔質層に所望量の色素増感剤を担持させることができなくなる可能性があるからである。
 また上記介在層の空孔率としては、上記酸化物半導体層の空孔率よりも大きければ特に限定されないが、通常、25%~65%の範囲内であることが好ましく、なかでも、30%~60%の範囲内であることが好ましい。
 なお、本態様における空孔率とは単位体積当たりの金属酸化物半導体微粒子の非占有率のことを示す。上記空孔率は、細孔容積をガス吸着量測定装置(Autosorb-1MP;Quantachrome製)にて測定し、単位面積あたりの体積との比率から算出する方法により測定することができる。介在層の空孔率については酸化物半導体層と積層された多孔質層としての空孔率を求めた後、酸化物半導体層単体で求めた値より算出することができる。
4.シール材
 次に、本態様に用いられるシール材について説明する。本態様に用いられるシール材は、上記電解質層および多孔質層の端部を覆い、さらに上記第1電極層に上記電解質層が接しないように形成されていることにより、電解質層と第1電極層とが直接的に接触して逆電子移動が生じることを防止するとともに、電解質層を封止する機能を有するものである。
 本態様に用いられるシール材としては、電解質層に対して耐久性を有する材料からなるものであれば特に限定なく用いることができる。このようなシール材としては、例えば、ヒートシール可能な各種の熱可塑性樹脂乃至熱可塑性エラストマー、低密度ポリエチレン、高密度ポリエチレン、ポリプロピレン、ポリ1-ブテン、ポリ4-メチル-1-ペンテン、或いはエチレン、プロピレン、1-ブテン、4-メチル-1-ペンテン等のα-オレフィン同士のランダム乃至ブロック共重合体等のポリオレフィン系樹脂;エチレン-酢酸ビニル共重合体、エチレン-ビニルアルコール共重合体、エチレン-塩化ビニル共重合体等のエチレン-ビニル化合物共重合体樹脂;ポリスチレン、アクリロニトリル-スチレン共重合体、ABS、α-メチルスチレン-スチレン共重合体等のスチレン系樹脂;ポリビニルアルコール、ポリビニルピロリドン、ポリ塩化ビニル、ポリ塩化ビニリデン、塩化ビニル-塩化ビニリデン共重合体、ポリアクリル酸、ポリメタクリル酸、ポリアクリル酸メチル、ポリメタクリル酸メチル等のビニル系樹脂;ナイロン6、ナイロン6-6、ナイロン6-10、ナイロン11、ナイロン12等のポリアミド樹脂;ポリエチレンテレフタレート、ポリブチレンテレフタレート、ポリエチレンナフタレート等のポリエステル樹脂;ポリカーボネート;ポリフェニレンオキサイド;カルボキシメチルセルロース、ヒドロキシエチルセルロースなどのセルロース誘導体;酸化澱粉、エーテル化澱粉、デキストリンなどの澱粉;及びこれらの混合物からなる樹脂などを使用することができる。
 なお、本態様に用いられるシール材の厚みは、通常1μm~100μmの範囲内であることが好ましく、1μm~50μmの範囲内であることがより好ましい。ここで、本態様におけるシール材の厚みは、色素増感型太陽電池用基材と対電極基材との間隔に相当するものになる。
5.色素増感型太陽電池用基材
 次に、本態様に用いられる色素増感型太陽電池用基材について説明する。本態様に用いられる色素増感型太陽電池用基材は、基材と、上記基材上に形成された第1電極層とを有するものである。
 以下、このような色素増感型太陽電池用基材に用いられる各構成について順に説明する。
(1)基材
 まず、本態様に用いられる基材について説明する。本態様に用いられる基材としては、本態様に用いられる第1電極層、および多孔質層を支持することが可能な程度の自己支持性を有するものであれば特に限定されるものではない。したがって、本態様に用いられる基材は可撓性を有するフレキシブル材であってもよく、または、石英ガラス、パイレックス(登録商標)、合成石英板等の可撓性を有さないリジッド材であってもよい。なかでも本態様に用いられる基材はフレキシブル材であることが好ましく、上記フレキシブル材のなかでも樹脂製基材であることが好ましい。樹脂製基材は加工性に優れ、製造コストの低減ができるからである。
 上記樹脂製基材としては、例えば、エチレン・テトラフルオロエチレン共重合体フィルム、二軸延伸ポリエチレンテレフタレートフィルム、ポリエーテルサルフォン(PES)フィルム、ポリエーテルエーテルケトン(PEEK)フィルム、ポリエーテルイミド(PEI)フィルム、ポリイミド(PI)フィルム、ポリエステルナフタレート(PEN)、ポリカーボネート(PC)等の樹脂からなる基材等を挙げることができる、なかでも本態様においては二軸延伸ポリエチレンテレフタレートフィルム(PET)、ポリエステルナフタレートフィルム(PEN)、ポリカーボネートフィルム(PC)が用いられることが好ましい。
 また、本態様に用いられる基材の厚みは、本態様の色素増感型太陽電池の用途等に応じて適宜選択することができるものであるが、通常、50μm~2000μmの範囲内であることが好ましく、特に75μm~1800μmの範囲内であることが好ましく、さらに100μm~1500μmの範囲内であることが好ましい。
 また、本態様に用いられる基材は、耐熱性、耐候性、水蒸気、その他のガスバリア性に優れたものであることが好ましい。上記基材がガスバリア性を有することにより、例えば、本態様の色素増感型太陽電池の経時安定性を向上できるからである。なかでも本態様においては、酸素透過率が温度23℃、湿度90%の条件下において1cc/m/day・atm以下、水蒸気透過率が温度37.8℃、湿度100%の条件下において1g/m/day以下のガスバリア性を有する基材を用いることが好ましい。本態様においては、このようなガスバリア性を達成するために、基材上に任意のガスバリア層を設けたものを用いてもよい。
(2)第1電極層
 次に、本態様に用いられる第1電極層について説明する。本態様に用いられる第1電極層は、上記基材上に形成されたものである。
 本態様に用いられる第1電極層を構成する材料としては、所望の導電性を有する材料であれば特に限定されるものではなく、導電性高分子材料や金属酸化物等を用いることができる。
 上記金属酸化物としては、所望の導電性を有するものであれば特に限定されるものではない。なかでも本態様に用いられる金属酸化物は太陽光に対して透過性を有するものであることが好ましい。このような太陽光に対する透過性を有する金属酸化物としては、例えば、SnO、ITO、IZO、ZnOを挙げることができる。本態様においては、これらのいずれの金属酸化物であっても好適に用いることができるが、なかでもフッ素ドープしたSnO(以下、FTOと称する。)、ITOを用いることが好ましい。FTOおよびITOは、導電性および太陽光の透過性の両方に優れているからである。
 一方、上記導電性高分子材料としては、例えば、ポリチオフェン、ポリエチレンスルフォン酸(PSS)、ポリアニリン(PA)、ポリピロール、ポリエチレンジオキシチオフェン(PEDOT)等を挙げることができる。また、これらを2種以上混合して用いることもできる。
 本態様に用いられる第1電極層は、単一の層からなる構成であってもよく、また、複数の層が積層された構成であってもよい。複数の層が積層された構成としては、例えば、仕事関数が互いに異なる材料からなる層が積層された態様や、互いに異なる金属酸化物からなる層が積層された態様を挙げることができる。
 本態様に用いられる第1電極層の厚みは、本態様の色素増感型太陽電池の用途等に応じて、所望の導電性を実現できる範囲内であれば特に限定されない。なかでも本態様における第1電極層の厚みとしては、通常、5nm~2000nmの範囲内が好ましく、特に10nm~1000nmの範囲内であることが好ましい。厚みが上記範囲よりも厚いと、均質な第1電極層を形成することが困難となる場合や全光線透過率が低下して良好な光電変換効率を得ることが難しくなる場合があり、また、厚みが上記範囲よりも薄いと、第1電極層の導電性が不足する可能性があるからである。
 なお、上記厚みは、第1電極層が複数の層から構成される場合には、すべての層の厚みを合計した総厚みを指すものとする。
(3)任意の構成
 本態様に用いられる色素増感型太陽電池用基材は、少なくとも上記基材、および第1電極層を有するものであればよいが、必要に応じて他の任意の構成を有してもよいものである。本態様に用いられる任意の構成としては、例えば、上記第1電極層に接するように形成され、導電性材料からなる補助電極を挙げることができる。このような補助電極が形成されていることにより、上記第1電極層の導電性が不足する場合に、それを補充することができるため、本態様の色素増感型太陽電池をより発電効率に優れたものにできるという利点がある。
(4)色素増感型太陽電池用基材の製造方法
 上記色素増感型太陽電池用基材の製造方法としては、上述した構成を有する色素増感型太陽電池用基材を製造できる方法であれば特に限定されるものではなく、一般的に公知の方法を適宜参考にして用いることができる。
6.対電極基材
 次に、本態様に用いられる対電極基材について説明する。本態様における対電極基材は、電極としての機能を有するものである。
 本態様に用いられる対電極基材としては、電極としての機能を有するものであれば特に限定されるものではない。このような対電極基材としては、金属箔からなるものや、対向基材上に、第2電極層が形成された構成を有するもの等を挙げることができる。
 本態様に用いられる対電極基材として金属箔からなるものが用いられる場合は、金属箔それ自体が電極としての機能を有するため、他の構成を有することは必須ではないことになる。上記対電極基材として用いられる金属箔としては、例えばチタン、ステンレス、アルミニウム、銅等からなるものを挙げることができる。また、金属箔からなる対電極基材が用いられる場合、当該金属箔の厚みとしては、対電極基材に所望の自己支持性を付与できる範囲内であれば特に限定されるものではないが、通常、5μm~1000μmの範囲内であることが好ましく、10μm~500μmの範囲内であることがより好ましく、20μm~200μmの範囲内であることがさらに好ましい。
 次に、上記対電極基材として対向基材上に第2電極層が形成された構成を有するものを用いる場合、当該第2電極層としては、所望の導電性を有する導電性材料からなるものであれば特に限定されるものではなく、導電性高分子材料や金属酸化物等からなるものを用いることができる。ここで、上記導電性高分子材料や金属酸化物については、上記第1電極層に用いられるものとして説明したものを用いることができる。
 本態様に用いられる第2電極層は、単一の層からなる構成であってもよく、また、複数の層が積層された構成であってもよい。複数の層が積層された構成としては、例えば、仕事関数が互いに異なる材料からなる層を積層する態様や、互いに異なる金属酸化物からなる層を積層する態様を挙げることができる。また、本態様に用いられる第2電極層の厚みは、通常、5nm~2000nmの範囲内が好ましく、特に10nm~1000nmの範囲内であることが好ましい。
 本態様に用いられる対向基材は、上記色素増感型太陽電池用基材に用いられる基材と同様のものを用いることができるため、ここでの説明は省略する。
 また、本態様に用いられる対電極基材には必要に応じて触媒層が形成されていてもよい。対電極基材に触媒層が形成されていることにより、本態様の色素増感型太陽電池をより発電効率に優れたものにできる。このような触媒層の例としては、例えば、上記第2電極層上にPtを蒸着した態様や、ポリエチレンジオキシチオフェン(PEDOT)、ポリスチレンスルフォン酸(PSS)、ポリアニリン(PA)、パラトルエンスルホン酸(PTS)およびこれらの混合物から触媒層を形成する態様を挙げることができるが、この限りではない。なお、対電極基材として対向基材と第2電極層とを有するものが用いられる場合、上記触媒層は第2電極層上に形成されることになる。
7.色素増感型太陽電池の態様
 本態様の色素増感型太陽電池は、上記多孔質層、および上記対電極基材がパターニングされていることにより、一対の色素増感型太陽電池用基材および対電極基材の間に複数のセルが連結された構成を有するものであってもよい。このような構成を有することにより、本態様の色素増感型太陽電池を起電力の高いものにできるからである。
 図4は、上記対電極基材として対向基材と第2電極層とを有するものが用いられる場合において、一対の色素増感型太陽電池用基材および対電極基材に複数のセルが連結された構成を有する場合の一例を示す概略断面図である。図4は、一例として3つのセルが連結した構成を有するものであり、図4(a)は、直列に連結された態様、図4(b)は並列に連結された態様を示すものである。なお、図4(a)における6は配線を示す。
 また、上記多孔質層等のパターニングの形状としては、本態様の色素増感型太陽電池に求める起電力等により任意に決定することができるが、なかでも本態様においてはストライプ形状が最も好ましい。
8.色素増感型太陽電池の製造方法
 次に、本態様の色素増感型太陽電池の製造方法について説明する。本態様の色素増感型太陽電池は、例えば、上記色素増感型太陽電池用基材上に多孔質層を形成し、上記対電極基材との間に電解質層を形成することにより製造することができる。
 本態様において、上記色素増感型太陽電池用基材と、上記対電極基材との間に電解質層を形成する方法としては、電解質層を厚み精度よく形成できる方法であれば特に限定されない。このような方法としては、例えば上記色素増感型太陽電池用基材上に形成された多孔質層の周囲および第1電極層の表面を覆うようにシール材を形成した後、上記シール材で囲まれた内側であり、かつ多孔質層上に電解質層を形成し、さらに当該電解質層上に対電極基材を配置する方法を挙げることができる。
 このような色素増感型太陽電池の製造方法について図を参照しながら説明する。図5は本態様の色素増感型太陽電池の製造方法について、その一例を説明する概略図である。図5に例示するように、本態様の色素増感型太陽電池10は、多孔質層4が積層された色素増感型太陽電池用基材1を準備し(図5(a))、第1電極層1bの表面上において上記多孔質層4を囲うようにシール材5を形成し(図5(b))、上記シール材5で囲まれた内側であり、かつ上記多孔質層4上に電解質層3を形成し(図5(c))、さらに当該電解質層3上に対電極基材2を配置する方法を挙げることができる(図5(d))。
B.第2態様の色素増感型太陽電池
1.色素増感型太陽電池
 本発明の第2態様の色素増感型太陽電池は、基材、および上記基材上に形成された第1電極層を有する色素増感型太陽電池用基材と、上記色素増感型太陽電池用基材に対向するように配置され、電極としての機能を備える対電極基材と、上記色素増感型太陽電池用基材および上記対電極基材の間に形成された電解質層と、上記対電極基材上に積層され、かつ上記電解質層と接するように形成されており、表面に色素増感剤が担持された金属酸化物半導体微粒子を含む多孔質層と、上記電解質層を封止するように形成されたシール材と、を有するものであって、上記電解質層と上記多孔質層の幅が異なっており、かつ上記シール材が上記電解質層および多孔質層の端部を覆い、さらに上記対電極基材の表面に上記電解質層が接しないように形成されていることを特徴とするものである。
 このような本態様の色素増感型太陽電池について図を参照しながら説明する。図6は本態様の色素増感型太陽電池の一例を示す概略断面図である。図6に例示するように、本態様の色素増感型太陽電池10は、基材1a、および上記基材1a上に形成された第1電極層1bを有する色素増感型太陽電池用基材1と、上記色素増感型太陽電池用基材1に対向するように配置され、電極としての機能を備える対電極基材2と、上記色素増感型太陽電池用基材1および上記対電極基材2の間に形成された電解質層3と、上記対電極基材2上に積層され、かつ上記電解質層3と接するように形成されており、表面に色素増感剤が担持された金属酸化物半導体微粒子を含む多孔質層4と、上記電解質層3を封止するように形成されたシール材5とを有するものである。
 このような例において、本態様の色素増感型太陽電池10は、上記電解質層3と上記多孔質層4の幅が異なっており、かつ上記シール材5が上記電解質層3および多孔質層4の端部を覆い、さらに上記対電極基材2の表面に上記電解質層3が接しないように形成されていることを特徴とするものである。
 本発明によれば、上記シール材が上記電解質層および多孔質層の端部を覆い、さらに上記対電極基材に上記電解質層が接しないように形成されていることにより、本発明の色素増感型太陽電池において電解質層が対電極基材に直接的に接する箇所(図7(b)中、Bで示す界面)をなくすことができる。
 また、上記電解質層と上記多孔質層との幅が異なっていることにより、多孔質層とシール材との界面距離を長くすることができるため、電解質層がシール材と多孔質層の隙間に染み込んだとしても対電極基材に到達することを防止することができる。このため、本発明によれば電解質層と対電極基材とが直接的に接することによる逆電子移動を防止できる。
 このようなことから本発明によれば、簡易な方法で逆電子移動を防止し、発電効率が著しく改善された色素増感型太陽電池を得ることができる。
 ここで、本態様の色素増感型太陽電池において、多孔質層と電解質層の幅が異なる態様については、上記「A.第1態様の色素増感型太陽電池」の項において説明したものと同様である。
2.電解質層
 本態様に用いられる電解質層は、上記「A.第1態様の色素増感型太陽電池」の項において説明したものと同様であるため、ここでの説明は省略する。
3.多孔質層
 次に、本態様に用いられる多孔質層について説明する。本態様に用いられる多孔質層は、表面に色素増感剤が担持された金属酸化物半導体微粒子を含有するものであり、対電極基材上に積層され、かつ上記電解質層に接するように形成されるものである。なお、本態様に用いられる多孔質層は、第1電極層上ではなく、対電極基材上に積層されていること以外は、上記「A.第1態様の色素増感型太陽電池」の項において説明したものと同様である。
4.シール材
 次に、本態様に用いられるシール材について説明する。本態様に用いられるシール材は、上記電解質層および多孔質層の端部を覆い、さらに上記対電極基材に上記電解質層が接しないように形成されていることにより、電解質層と対電極基材とが直接的に接触して逆電子移動が生じることを防止するとともに、電解質層を封止する機能を有するものである。
 ここで、本態様に用いられるシール材は、第1電極層ではなく上記対電極基材に上記電解質層が接しないように形成されていること以外は、上記「A.第1態様の色素増感型太陽電池」の項において説明したものと同様である。
5.色素増感型太陽電池用基材
 本態様に用いられる色素増感型太陽電池用基材は、上記「A.第1態様の色素増感型太陽電池」の項において説明したものと同様である。
 なお、本態様に用いられる色素増感型太陽電池用基材は、上記第1電極層上に触媒層が形成されていることが好ましい。上記第1電極層上に触媒層が形成されていることにより、本態様の色素増感型太陽電池をより発電効率に優れたものにできる。このような触媒層の例としては、例えば、上記第1電極層上にPtを蒸着した態様や、ポリエチレンジオキシチオフェン(PEDOT)、ポリスチレンスルフォン酸(PSS)、ポリアニリン(PA)、パラトルエンスルホン酸(PTS)およびこれらの混合物から触媒層を形成する態様を挙げることができるがこの限りではない。上記第1電極層上に触媒層を形成する場合、光透過性を損なわない範囲で触媒能を発揮させる必要があり、例えば、Ptを蒸着した態様では、Ptの厚みは0.1~20nmが好ましい。0.1nmを下回る場合、触媒能が不足する可能性があり、20nmを上回る場合は透過する光の量が不足する可能性がある。
6.対電極基材
 本態様に用いられる対電極基材は、上記「A.第1態様の色素増感型太陽電池」の項において説明したものと同様である。
7.色素増感型太陽電池の態様
 本態様の色素増感型太陽電池は、多孔質層等、および、上記色素増感型太陽電池用基材の第1電極層等がパターニングされていることにより、一対の色素増感型太陽電池用基材および対電極基材の間に複数のセルが連結された構成を有するものであってもよい。このような構成を有することにより、本態様の色素増感型太陽電池を起電力の高いものにできるからである。
8.色素増感型太陽電池の製造方法
 次に、本態様の色素増感型太陽電池の製造方法について説明する。本態様の色素増感型太陽電池は、例えば、上記対電極基材上に多孔質層形成し、色素増感型太陽電池用基材と、対電極基材との間に電解質層を形成することにより製造することができる。このような方法は、多孔質層を対電極基材上に形成すること以外は、上記「A.第1態様の色素増感型太陽電池」の項において説明したものと同様であるため、ここでの説明は省略する。
 なお、本発明は、上記実施形態に限定されるものではない。上記実施形態は例示であり、本発明の特許請求の範囲に記載された技術的思想と、実質的に同一の構成を有し、同様な作用効果を奏するものは、いかなる場合であっても本発明の技術的範囲に包含される。
 以下、実施例を用いて、本発明をさらに具体的に説明する。
[実施例1]
 1mm厚のガラス基板を基材として用い、当該基材上に、第1電極層としてFTOをスパッタ法で厚み400nmで形成し、次いで20mm×20mm角に切り出し、色素増感型太陽電池用基材を得た。第1電極層の表面抵抗率は10Ω/□であった。
 次に、酸化チタン粉末(日本アエロジル社製:P-25(商品名))に4wt%のエチルセルロースとエタノールとを添加したインキを、乾燥後の厚みが8μmとなるよう、第1電極層上に10mm×10mm角の大きさに塗布して成膜し、500℃で15分焼成することにより多孔質層を得た。
 次に、色素増感剤として、SOLARONIX社製のRuthenium535-bisTBA(商品名)を、エタノール溶剤に溶解し、濃度5×10-4Mに調製して色素溶液とした。この色素溶液に上記多孔質層を12時間浸漬して多孔質層に色素を吸着させ、その後エタノールで洗浄して乾燥させた。
 次に、1-メチル-3-プロピルイミダゾリウムアイオダイド(8g)と、プロピオニトリル(2g)の混合溶液に脂環式エポキシ樹脂(0.5g、ダイセル化学社製の商品名;2021)とシリコーン樹脂(0.5g、東レシリコーン社製のSH6018)を加えて溶解し、また、ヨウ素をヨウ素濃度が0.03Mになるように溶解させ、電解質層組成物とした。
 次に、上記多孔質層の外周部を2mm覆うように第1電極層上にシール材(三井・デュポンポリケミカル社製ハイミラン25μm)を配し、シール材に囲まれた多孔質層上に上記電解質層組成物を積層した。
 次に、白金15nmをスパッタ法で積層したフッ素ドープ酸化錫電極を第2電極層とし、ガラス基板を対向基材として用いた対電極基材を、上記第2電極層が電解質層と接するように配置し、170℃、1分加熱して本発明における色素増感型太陽電池を作製した。
[実施例2]
 実施例1の電解質層組成物に、エチルセルロース5wt%を含有させたこと以外は、実施例1と同様の方法により色素増感型太陽電池を作製した。
[実施例3]
 100μ厚のPEN基板を基材として用い、当該基材上に第1電極層としてITOをイオンプレーティング法で厚み200nm形成した。次いで、20mm×20mm角に切り出した。第1電極層の表面抵抗率は15Ω/□であった。
 次に、多孔質層として、酸化チタンペースト(Solaronix社製:Ti-Nanoxide T-L)を、乾燥後の厚みが8μmとなるよう、第1電極層上に10mm×10mm角の大きさに塗布して成膜し、150℃で1時間乾燥させて多孔質層とした。
 次に、実施例1と同様にして多孔質層に色素を吸着させ、その後エタノールで洗浄して乾燥させた。
 上記多孔質層の外周部を2mm覆うように第1電極層上にシール材(三井・デュポンポリケミカル社製ハイミラン25μm)を配置し、シール材に囲まれた多孔質層上に実施例1と同様にして電解質層組成物を積層した。
 次に、白金をつけたフッ素ドープ酸化錫電極を第2電極層とし、ガラス基板を対向基材として用いた対電極基材を、上記第2電極層が電解質層と接するように配置し、140℃、3分加熱して本発明における色素増感型太陽電池を作製した。
[実施例4]
 実施例1において、白金15nmをスパッタ法で積層した80μm厚のチタン箔を対電極基材とし、白金を電解質層と接するように配置した。また、多孔質層の外周部を1mm覆うように第1電極層上にシール材(三井・デュポンポリケミカル社製ハイミラン25μm)を配した他は、実施例1と同様に作製した。
[実施例5]
 1mm厚のガラス基板を基材として用い、当該基材上に第1電極層としてITOをスパッタ法で厚み200nmで形成し、次いで上記第1電極層上に白金をスパッタ法で1nm積層した後、20mm×20mm角に切り出し、色素増感型太陽電池用基材を得た。第1電極層の表面抵抗率は9Ω/□であった。
 次に、酸化チタン粉末(日本アエロジル社製:P-25(商品名))に4wt%のエチルセルロースとエタノールとを添加したインキを、乾燥後の厚みが7μmとなるよう、対電極基材である80μm厚のチタン箔上に10mm×10mm角の大きさに塗布して成膜し、500℃で15分焼成することにより多孔質層を得た。
 次に、実施例1と同様にして多孔質層に色素を吸着させ、その後エタノールで洗浄して乾燥させた。
 次に、実施例1の電解質層組成物にエチルセルロース5wt%を含有させ、電解質層組成物とした。
 次に、上記多孔質層の外周部を1mm覆うように対電極基材上にシール材(三井・デュポンポリケミカル社製ハイミラン25μm)を配し、シール材に囲まれた多孔質層上に上記電解質層組成物を積層した。
 次に、色素増感型太陽電池用基材を、白金が電解質層と接するよう配置し、170℃、1分加熱して本発明における色素増感型太陽電池を作製した。
[実施例6]
 実施例5において、100μm厚のPENフィルムを基材として用い、当該基材上に、第1電極層としてITOをイオンレーティング法で厚み200nm形成し、次いで上記第1電極層上に白金をスパッタ法で1nm積層した後、20mm×20mm角に切り出し、色素増感型太陽電池用基材を得た。第1電極層の表面抵抗率は15Ω/□であった。色素増感型太陽電池用基材を、白金が電解質層と接するよう配置し、140℃、3分加熱して本発明における色素増感型太陽電池を作製した他は、実施例5と同様に行った。
[実施例7]
 実施例5において、白金をスパッタ法で5nm積層した他は、実施例5と同様に行った。
[実施例8]
 実施例5において、白金をスパッタ法で10nm積層した他は、実施例5と同様に行った。
[比較例1]
 実施例1において、多孔質層の大きさを8mm×8mmとし、シール材と多孔質層の間を1mm空けた他は実施例1と同様に行った。
[比較例2]
 実施例3において、多孔質層の大きさを8mm×8mmとし、シール材と多孔質層の間を1mm空けた他は実施例3と同様に行った。
[比較例3]
 実施例8において、白金をスパッタ法で10nm積層し、多孔質層の大きさを8mm×8mmとし、シール材と多孔質層の間を1mm空けた他は、実施例8と同様に行った。
 表1に、実施例および比較例で作製した色素増感型太陽電池の評価結果を示す。評価は、色素増感型太陽電池を作製した直後と、気温65℃、相対湿度60%の雰囲気中に168時間保存した後に行った。なお、評価は、得られた色素増感型太陽電池の性能を測定するにあたり、擬似太陽光(AM1.5、照射強度100mW/cm)を光源として用いたときの電流電圧特性を、ソースメジャーユニット(ケースレー2400型)により求めた。

Claims (4)

  1.  基材、および前記基材上に形成された第1電極層を有する色素増感型太陽電池用基材と、
     前記色素増感型太陽電池用基材に対向するように配置され、電極としての機能を備える対電極基材と、
     前記色素増感型太陽電池用基材および前記対電極基材の間に形成された電解質層と、
     前記色素増感型太陽電池用基材の第1電極層上に積層され、かつ前記電解質層と接するように形成されており、表面に色素増感剤が担持された金属酸化物半導体微粒子を含む多孔質層と、
     前記電解質層を封止するように形成されたシール材と、
    を有する色素増感型太陽電池であって、
     前記電解質層と前記多孔質層の幅が異なっており、かつ前記シール材が前記電解質層および前記多孔質層の端部を覆い、さらに前記第1電極層に前記電解質層が接しないように形成されていることを特徴とする色素増感型太陽電池。
  2.  基材、および前記基材上に形成された第1電極層を有する色素増感型太陽電池用基材と、
     前記色素増感型太陽電池用基材に対向するように配置され、電極としての機能を備える対電極基材と、
     前記色素増感型太陽電池用基材および前記対電極基材の間に形成された電解質層と、
     前記対電極基材上に積層され、かつ前記電解質層と接するように形成されており、表面に色素増感剤が担持された金属酸化物半導体微粒子を含む多孔質層と、
     前記電解質層を封止するように形成されたシール材と、
    を有する色素増感型太陽電池であって、
     前記電解質層と前記多孔質層の幅が異なっており、かつ前記シール材が前記電解質層および前記多孔質層の端部を覆い、さらに前記対電極基材の表面に前記電解質層が接しないように形成されていることを特徴とする色素増感型太陽電池。
  3.  前記電解質層の幅が前記多孔質層の幅よりも狭いことを特徴とする、請求の範囲第1項または第2項に記載の色素増感型太陽電池。
  4.  前記電解質層と前記多孔質層との幅の差が0.5mm~5mmの範囲内であることを特徴とする、請求の範囲第1項から第3項までのいずれかに記載の色素増感型太陽電池。
