Abstract

 本発明は、透明基板の表面に透明導電膜が形成された透明導電基板と、透明導電基板に対向して配され、電極膜を有する電極基板と、透明導電膜と電極膜の間に形成された電解質層と、電解質層の周縁に環状に形成され、該電解質層を密封するシール部材と、を有する電気化学表示素子であって、透明導電膜に電気的に接続されるとともに、シール部材で覆われた導電部材を有することにより、給電電極(給電端子部)から表示媒体(電解質層)に電流が流れるまでの経路の抵抗成分を低減させることができ、該抵抗性分による経路の電圧降下を小さくすることができる。

Description

電気化学表示素子
 本発明は、電気化学表示素子に関する。
 近年、視認性に優れ、且つ消費電力の少ない表示素子が求められている。現在一般に用いられているCRT、PDP、LCDといった自発光もしくは自発光体から発せられる光を変調するような表示素子は、明るく見易いが消費電力が大きいという問題がある。
 低消費電力化の観点からは、表示内容を無電源で保持する機能(メモリ性)を有することが望ましく、さらには駆動電圧が低いことが望まれる。このような特性を備える表示素子として、電極膜の表面の酸化還元反応による光吸収状態の可逆変化を利用したエレクトロクロミック表示素子(以下、ECD素子とも記す)や、金属または金属を化学構造中に有する化合物を含む電解質から、電極膜の表面への金属の析出と電解液への溶解とを利用するエレクトロデポジション表示素子(以下、ED素子とも記す)等の電気化学表示素子の開発が近年盛んに行われている。ECD素子、及びED素子ともに表示原理としては、電極膜の表面での酸化還元反応を利用し、反応物質単独での光吸収の変化を利用したものであり、LCDのように偏光板やバックライトといった部材が不要であり、低コスト化、及び省プロセス化等に対して非常に有利な表示素子である。
 しかしながら、このような電気化学表示素子は、一対の電極膜の間に電圧を印加し、各電極膜の表面での酸化反応または還元反応といった電荷の移動、すなわち電流を流すことにより、表示状態を切り替える電流駆動型表示素子である。この為、電極膜に電圧を印加する為の給電電極(給電端子部)から表示媒体に電流が流れるまでの経路の抵抗成分に応じて電圧降下が生じ、表示位置により表示媒体に印加される電圧値が異なり、表示濃度にムラが生じるという問題がある。
 この表示濃度ムラは、表示素子の表示領域の面積を広くした場合、電流の流れる経路が長くなり、顕著に現れる。また、表示素子の観察側の透明基板の表面に形成されるITO(錫ドープ酸化インジウム)に代表される透明導電膜は、金属電極膜に比べ抵抗値が高く、表示濃度ムラが顕著に現れる。
 エレクトロクロミック層を用いた調光ガラスにおいて、濃度ムラを抑える為、特許文献1には、素子基板表面の端部及び内部に位置する上下の透明導電層上に銅の低抵抗電極部を設けることで、電流が流れる経路の抵抗値を低減する構成が開示されている。
 しかしながら、特許文献1に記載の構成は、封止されたエレクトロクロミック物質全体を一括して着色・消色する調光ガラスにおいては適用可能であるが、複数の電極が表示領域内に形成されたセグメント型やドットマトリクス型等の表示素子には適用が困難である。
 すなわち、セグメント型やドットマトリクス型の表示素子は、パターン化された複数の電極に個別に電圧を印加する為の引き出し電極を要する。このため、特許文献1に記載の低抵抗電極部を設ける場合には、この低抵抗電極部とは別に引き出し電極を設ける為の領域が必要となる。したがって、表示領域外の部分(以下、非表示領域、又は額縁とも記す)の面積が広くなり、表示素子が大型化し、表示素子が搭載される装置の小型化を阻害するといった問題が生じる。
 そこで、額縁を広めることなく、引き出し電極を設ける領域を確保する為、特許文献2では、以下の構成が開示されている。
 特許文献2に開示の液晶表示装置は、2つの基板間に液晶を封入するシール材として、外側に位置する導電シール材と、この導電シール材の内側に位置する非導通シール材とを有する。導通シール材の中には導電粒子が混入されており、導電粒子が基板間で接触することにより、上側基板のコモン電極と下側基板の引き出し配線とが電気的に接続される。このことにより、シール材の外側に引き廻し配線を配置していた従来の構成に比べて、狭額縁化を図ることができる。

 しかしながら、特許文献2に記載されている構成は、導通シール材の中に混入された導電粒子によってのみ電気的接続を行うものであるので、十分に電気抵抗を小さくすることができないという問題があった。
 本発明は、上記課題を鑑みてなされたもので、狭額縁化を阻害することなく、表示濃度ムラを抑え、信頼性の高い電気化学表示素子を提供することを目的とする。
 上記目的は、下記に記載の発明によって達成される。
 1.透明基板の表面に透明導電膜が形成された透明導電基板と、
 前記透明導電基板に対向して配され、電極膜を有する電極基板と、
 前記透明導電膜と前記電極膜との間に形成された電解質層と、
 前記電解質層の周縁に環状に形成され、該電解質層を密封するシール部材と、を有する電気化学表示素子であって、
 前記透明導電膜に電気的に接続されるとともに、前記シール部材で覆われた導電部材を有することを特徴とする電気化学表示素子。
 本発明によれば、透明導電膜の周縁に電気的に接続される導電部材を設けることにより、給電電極(給電端子部)から表示媒体(電解質層)に電流が流れるまでの経路の抵抗成分を低減させることができ、該抵抗成分による経路の電圧降下を小さくすることができる。これにより、表示濃度ムラを抑えることができる。また、導電部材は、シール部材で覆われているので、外気、及び電解質層に触れることはない。これにより、導電部材の腐食や劣化を抑えることができ、信頼性を高めることができる。

 以下、図面に基づいて、本発明の実施形態に係る電気化学表示素子を説明する。尚、本発明は、該実施の形態に限られない。また、以下の全ての図において、図面を見易くする為、各構成部材の寸法の比率等は適宜異ならせている。また、以下の説明において、「透明」とは、可視光域(波長400nm~700nm)での透過率が約70%以上であることを指す。
(実施形態1)
 本発明の実施形態1に係る電気化学表示素子の構成を、図1を用いて説明する。図1は、実施形態1による電気化学表示素子1の概略構成を示す断面模式図である。
 電気化学表示素子1の要部は、図1に示すように、透明導電基板2、電極基板3、電解質層6、導電部材8、及びシール部材9等から構成される。
 透明導電基板2は、透明基板201、及び透明基板201の表面に形成された透明導電膜203等から構成される。
 透明基板201としては、ソーダライムガラス、無アルカリガラス、石英等の電子デバイスに使用されている硬質の材料で形成されたものや、フレキシブルなプラスチックで構成されたものを用いることができる。このプラスチック材料としては、例えば、ポリエチレンテレフタレート(PET)、トリアセチルセルロース(TAC)、セルロースアセテートプロピオネート(CAP)、ポリカーボネート(PC)、ポリエーテルスルホン(PES)、ポリエチレンナフタレート(PEN)、ポリイミド(PI)等を用いることができ、またこれらのプラスチック材料で構成された基板の特性を高める為に、その表面に公知の表面コートや表面処理を行ったものを用いることが好ましい。
 透明導電膜203は、錫ドープ酸化インジウム(ITO)、フッ素ドープ酸化スズ(FTO)、アルミニウムドープ酸化亜鉛(AZO)等の無機酸化物をスパッタリング法を用いて、あるいは、ポリスチレンスルホン酸ドープポリエチレンジオキシチオフェン(PEDOT/PSS)に代表される導電性高分子を各種ウェットコーティング法を用いて成膜することができる。
 電極基板3は、基板301、及び基板301の表面に形成された電極膜303等から構成される。電気化学表示素子1は、アクティブマトリクス構造であって、電極基板3は、その表面にマトリクス状に配列された複数の薄膜トランジスタ(図示せず)と、これら複数の薄膜トランジスタに対応して形成された複数の画素電極(図示せず)とを有する。これら複数の画素電極は、電極膜303によって形成される。この電極基板3としては、例えば、国際公開番号WO2006/129429号に開示のTFT基板を採用することができる。
 基板301は、ガラスやPET等の透明基板を用いることができる他、基板301は、必ずしも透明である必要はなく、ステンレスフォイルやポリイミドといった基板も用いることができる。
 電極膜303としては、ECD素子の場合は、ITO電極上にアンチモンをドープした酸化スズ層を有する電極を用いることができる。ED素子の場合は、銀電極や銀パラジウム電極等の金属電極を用いることができる。
 電気化学表示素子1は、観察側に透明導電基板2が、非観察側に電極基板3が配され、透明導電基板2の透明導電膜203と電極基板3の電極膜303とが対向するように配置されている。
 ECD素子の場合、透明導電膜203と電極膜303との間には、エレクトロクロミック色素を有する電解質層6が設けられており、対向電極(透明導電膜203、電極膜303)間に正負両極性の電圧を印加することにより、観察側の電極(透明導電膜203)の表面でエレクトロクロミック色素の酸化還元反応が行われ、エレクトロクロミックの着色状態を可逆的に切り替えることができる。尚、電解質層6の透明な状態における白色度を高める為、電解質層6にTiO、ZnO等の金属酸化物微粒子を分散、あるいは、該金属酸化物微粒子を水溶性高分子等のバインダーを用いて多孔質化した散乱層5を設けてもよい。
 ED素子の場合、透明導電膜203と電極膜303との間には、銀または銀を化学構造中に含む化合物を有する電解質層6が設けられており、対向電極(透明導電膜203、電極膜303)間に正負両極性の電圧を印加することにより、両電極の表面で銀の酸化還元反応が行われ、透明導電膜203表面では還元状態の黒い銀の状態と、酸化状態の透明な銀の状態とを可逆的に切り替えることができる。尚、この場合においても、ECD素子の場合と同様に、電解質層6の透明な状態における白色度を高める為、電解質層6にTiO、ZnO等の金属酸化物微粒子を分散、あるいは、該金属酸化物微粒子を水溶性高分子等のバインダーを用いて多孔質化した散乱層5を設けてもよい。また、銀の代わりに他の金属を用いてもよい。
 ここで、ECD材料、ED材料、電解質等の詳細を説明する。
 〔ECD材料〕
 電気化学表示素子1に用いられるエレクトロクロミック色素は、電子の供受により光吸収状態を変化させる化合物であり、有機化合物や金属錯体を用いることができる。有機化合物としては、ピリジン化合物や導電性高分子、スチリル化合物を用いることができ、特開2002-328401号公報に記載の各種ビオロゲン化合物、特表2004-537743号に記載の色素、その他公知の色素を用いることができる。また、ロイコ型色素を用いる場合には、必要に応じて顕色剤あるいは消色剤を併用してもよい。
 これらの材料は、電極の表面に直接塗布してもよいし、電子の供受をより効率的に行う為に、TiOに代表される酸化物半導体ナノ構造を電極上に形成し、その上にエレクトロクロミック材料をインクジェット法等の方法により塗布・含浸させてもよい。
 〔ED材料〕
 電気化学表示素子1に用いられる銀または銀を化学構造中に含む化合物とは、例えば、酸化銀、硫化銀、金属銀、銀コロイド粒子、ハロゲン化銀、銀錯体化合物、銀イオン等の化合物であり、固体状態、液体への可溶化状態、気体状態等の相の状態種、また、中性、アニオン性、カチオン性等の荷電状態種は、特に限定されない。
 また、電解質層6に含まれる銀イオン濃度は、0.2モル/kg≦[Ag]≦2モル/kgが好ましい。銀イオン濃度が0.2モル/kgより少ないと希薄な銀溶液となり駆動速度が遅延し、2モル/kgよりも大きいと溶解性が劣化し、低温保存時に析出が発生し易くなる。
 〔電解質〕
 電解質とは、通常、水等の溶媒に溶けて、その溶液がイオン伝導性を示す物質を示すが、本実施形態においては、電解質以外の他の金属や化合物等を含有させたものであっても構わないものとする。
 透明導電膜203と電極膜303との間に設ける電解質層6は、有機溶媒、イオン性液体、酸化還元活性物質、支持電解質、錯化剤、白色散乱物、高分子化合物等を適宜選択して構成される。以下、電解質層6の各構成要素について説明する。
 (有機溶媒)
 電解質層6に用いる有機溶媒としては、電解質層6を形成した後、揮発を起こさず電解質層6に留まることができる沸点が120~300℃の範囲にある有機溶媒を用いることができる。例えば、プロピレンカーボネート、エチレンカーボネート、エチルメチルカーボネート、ジエチルカーボネート、ジメチルカーボネート、ブチレンカーボネート、γ-ブチルラクトン、テトラメチル尿素、スルホラン、ジメチルスルホキシド、1,3-ジメチル-2-イミダゾリジノン、2-(N-メチル)-2-ピロリジノン、ヘキサメチルホスホルトリアミド、N-メチルプロピオンアミド、N,N-ジメチルアセトアミド、N-メチルアセトアミド、N,N-ジメチルホルムアミド、N-メチルホルムアミド、ブチロニトリル、プロピオニトリル、アセトニトリル、アセチルアセトン、4-メチル-2-ペンタノン、2-ブタノール、1-ブタノール、2-プロパノール、1-プロパノール、無水酢酸、酢酸エチル、プロピオン酸エチル、ジメトキシエタン、ジエトキシフラン、テトラヒドロフラン、エチレングリコール、ジエチレングリコール、トリエチレングリコールモノブチルエーテル等を用いることができる。
 上記有機溶媒の中でも、環状カルボン酸エステル類、例えば、プロピレンカーボネート、エチレンカーボネート、γ-ブチロラクトン等がより好ましい。
 (高分子化合物)
 電解質層6の粘度を高める為に、バインダーとして高分子化合物を用いる。高分子化合物としては、特に限定されないが、例えば、ブチラール樹脂、ポリビニルアルコール、ポリエチレングリコール、ポリフッ化ビリニデン等の高分子化合物の中から、表示素子の特性や電解質の粘度等を鑑み適宜選択して用いることができる。
 (金属酸化物微粒子)
 散乱により白色度を高める為に、無機系金属酸化物を用いる。無機系金属酸化物としては、例えば、二酸化チタン(アナターゼ型あるいはルチル型)、硫酸バリウム、炭酸カルシウム、酸化アルミニウム、酸化亜鉛、酸化マグネシウム、水酸化亜鉛、水酸化マグネシウム、リン酸マグネシウム、リン酸水素マグネシウム、アルカリ土類金属塩、タルク、カオリン、ゼオライト、酸性白土、ガラス等を用いることができる。
 (スペーサ)
 スペーサ7は、対向電極(透明導電膜203、電極膜303)間のギャップを規制する為の球形微粒子である。スペーサ7としては、例えば、液晶ディスプレイ等に使用されているガラス製、アクリル樹脂製、シリカ製等の微小真球を用いることができる。スペーサ7の平均粒径は、電解質層6での分散安定性や電解質層6に分散させた金属酸化微粒子の散乱効果による白色度向上の為、10μm以上、50μm以下の範囲にあることが好ましい。
 図1に戻り、導電部材8は、断面形状が台形をなし、透明導電膜203の表示領域Aの外側周縁部に環状に形成されている。尚、断面形状は、台形に限定されることなく、例えば、その他多角形、円弧等であってもよい。
 導電部材8は、透明基板201の端部に設けられ、図示しない外部の駆動回路からの駆動電圧が印加され、透明導電膜203の一部をなす給電端子部203aから透明導電膜203を介して電解質層6に電流が流れるまでの経路の抵抗成分を低減させ、該抵抗成分による経路の電圧降下を小さくするものである。これにより、表示位置による透明導電膜203に印加される電圧値のバラツキを抑え、表示濃度ムラを抑えることができる。
 導電部材8は、銅、銀、金、白金、アルミニウム、クロム、ニッケル、タンタル、及びこれらの合金をスパッタリング法や真空蒸着法を用いて成膜した後、フォトリソグラフィー法を用いてパターン化する方法や、成膜時にマスキング成膜を行うことにより成膜と同時にパターン化する方法等を用いて形成することができる。
 また、導電部材8は、透明基板201に成膜された透明導電膜203の表面に形成されることから、該透明導電膜203とレジストパターンを利用した電解めっき法を用いてパターン化することもできる。この場合、導電部材8の材料としては、電解めっきが可能な銅、銀、金、白金、ニッケル、クロム等が好適である。
 また、導電部材8は、真空成膜法に比べ、抵抗値は大きくなるがスクリーン印刷やインクジェット法といった印刷法を用いて形成することもできる。この場合、透明導電膜203の表面にダイレクトに非真空でパターン化することができるので、コストを低減することができる。
 スクリーン印刷を用いる場合のペースト材料としては、前述の金属、及び合金の微粒子、バインダー樹脂、有機溶媒等を混合した混合物を用いることができる。バインダー樹脂としては、アクリル系樹脂、エポキシ系樹脂、ポリエステル系、フェノール系樹脂、シリコーン系樹脂、ポリオレフィン系樹脂、ポリイミド系樹脂を用いることができる。有機溶媒としては、金属微粒子と反応せず、バインダー樹脂材料を溶解するものであれば特に限定されるものではない。
 シール部材9は、電解質層6の周縁に環状に形成され、電解質層6を密封することで、電解質層6を形成する電解液61の漏洩と、電解質層6の性能に影響を及ぼす外気からの水分や酸素等の侵入を防止するとともに、透明導電基板2と電極基板3とを接着するものである。
 また、シール部材9は、導電部材8を覆う構成、すなわちシール部材9と導電部材8とを略同じ位置で重ねるように配する構成としたので、狭額縁化を図ることができる。
 また、導電部材8は、シール部材9で覆われているので、外気、及び電解質層6に触れることはない。これにより、導電部材8の腐食や劣化を抑えることができ、信頼性を高めることができる。
(実施形態2)
 本発明の実施形態2に係る電気化学表示素子の構成を、図2を用いて説明する。図2は、実施形態2による電気化学表示素子1の概略構成を示す断面模式図である。実施形態2による電気化学表示素子1の基本構成は、実施形態1の場合と概ね同様であるので、その説明は省略し、実施形態1とは異なる導電部材8の配置等について説明する。
 電極基板3の基板301の表示領域Aの外側周縁には、透明導電基板2に形成された透明導電膜203に電圧を印加する為の給電電極305が環状に形成され、導電部材8は、給電電極305の表面に環状に形成されている。
 また、シール部材9は、電解質層6の周縁に環状に形成され、その内部には導電粒子901が分散されている。導電部材8は、該導電粒子901を介して、透明導電基板2の透明導電膜203に電気的に接続されている。導電部材8、シール部材9の材料や形成方法は、実施形態1の場合と概ね同様である。
 導電粒子901は、金属のみから構成される金属粒子であってもよいし、無機材料もしくは有機材料の絶縁性粒子をメッキ法等の方法で金属にて被覆した粒子であってもよい。特に、導電粒子としては、有機材料の絶縁性粒子を金属被覆した粒子が、製造が容易であることから、好適である。
 有機材料の絶縁性粒子としては、ポリエチレン樹脂、ポリプロピレン樹脂、ポリスチレン樹脂、アクリル樹脂等の粒子が使用可能であり、被覆材料の金属としては、銅、銀、金、白金、アルミニウム、クロム、ニッケル、タンタル、パラジウム等が使用可能である。特に、メッキ法によって被覆する場合の金属としては、金、ニッケル、パラジウムが好適である。
 導電粒子901の粒径は、透明基板2と電極基板3との間隔よりも小さいことが必要であり、例えば1~20μmの範囲であり、より好適には2~10μmの範囲である。また、金属で被覆した粒子の場合には、0.1~1μmの範囲の厚みで金属を被覆することが好ましい。さらに、導電粒子901は、シール部材9の材料に対して0.1~5質量%の範囲で混合すればよく、より好ましくは0.5~3質量%の範囲で混入すればよい。
 このような構成においても、実施形態1の場合と同様に、導電部材8により、給電電極305の一部をなす給電端子部305aから透明導電膜203を介して電解質層6に電流が流れるまでの経路の抵抗成分を低減させることができ、該抵抗成分による経路の電圧降下を小さくすることができる。これにより、表示位置による透明導電膜203に印加される電圧値のバラツキを抑え、表示濃度ムラを抑えることができる。
 また、同様に、シール部材9は、導電部材8を覆う構成、すなわちシール部材9と導電部材8を略同じ位置で重ねるように配する構成としたので、狭額縁化を図ることができる。また、導電部材8は、シール部材9で覆われているので、外気、及び電解質層6に触れることはない。これにより、導電部材8の腐食や劣化を抑えることができ、信頼性を高めることができる。
 さらに、電極膜303用の図示しない給電電極が設けられている電極基板3側に、透明導電膜203用の給電電極305を設けることにより、図示しない外部の駆動回路からの配線を一つの基板(電極基板3)に集結することができる。これにより、配線を簡略化することができる。
 以下、本発明の実施形態に係る電気化学表示素子1の実施例を説明する。
 (実施例1)
 図3に、実施例1による電気化学表示素子1の製造工程の概要を示す。図3(a)~図3(f)における左図は断面模式図、右図は平面模式図である。本実施例は、実施形態1に係る電気化学表示素子1の製造実施例である。
 最初に、ガラス基板(図3(a):透明基板201)の表面に、スパッタリング法を用いてITOを厚さ110nmで成膜し(図3(a):透明導電膜203)、透明導電基板2を製作した。尚、この時、透明導電膜203の左端の一部に、外部の駆動回路からの駆動電圧が印加される給電端子部203aを形成した(図3(f2))。
 続いて、透明導電膜203の表示領域Aの外側周縁部の表面に、スクリーン印刷法を用いて導電性ペーストであるドータイトFA-401CA(藤倉化成社製)を厚さ15μm、断面形状が台形で環状に成膜し、導電部材8を形成した(図3(b1))。尚、この時、ドータイトFA-401CAには、予め0.4質量%のスペーサ材であるミクロパールGS-230(積水化学工業社製)を混合しておいた。また、導電部材8には、後述の電解液61を注入する為の注入口8aを設けておいた(図3(b2))。
 続いて、導電部材8が形成された透明導電基板2を、150℃、30分間の加熱処理を行うことにより、溶媒を乾燥させ、導電部材8を低抵抗の導電性樹脂配線とした。
 次に、ガラス基板(図3(c):基板301)の表面に、図示しないマトリクス状に配列した複数の薄膜トランジスタと、該複数の薄膜トランジスタに対応する複数の画素電極として厚さ100nmで銀パラジウム電極(図3(c):電極膜303)を形成し、アクティブマトリクス構造の電極基板3を製作した。
 続いて、電極膜303の表面に、ポリビニルアルコール(平均重合度3500、けん化度87%)2質量%を含むイソプロパノール溶液中に、酸化チタン20質量%を超音波分散機で分散させた混和液を各セルに塗布し、加熱乾燥させることにより、厚さ20μmの散乱層5を形成した(図3(d))。
 続いて、散乱層5が形成された基板301の表示領域Aの外側周縁部の表面に、前述の透明導電基板2に形成した導電部材8と略同じ環状形状で、ディスペンサ法を用いて熱硬化型エポキシ系シール剤ストラクトボンドXN-21S(三井化学社製)を塗布し、シール部材9を形成した(図3(e1))。
 続いて、散乱層5の表面に、スペーサ材ミクロパールSP-210(積水化学工業社製)を配置した(図3(e1)、図3(e2):スペーサ7)。
 次に、透明導電基板2の透明導電膜203と電極基板3の電極膜303とを対向させて位置合せした後、重ね合せ、加圧状態で150℃、1時間の加熱処理を行うことによりセルを作成した(図3(f1))。
 次に、電解液61を調製した。電解液61としては、プロピレンカーボネート/エチレンカーボネート(質量比7/3)25g中に、p-トルエンスルホン酸銀を1.0g、3,6-ジチア-1,8-オクタンジオールを1.5g、メルカプトトリアゾールを10mg加えて完全に溶解させた後、ポリエチレングリコール(平均分子量50万)を1.5g加えて120℃に加熱しながら攪拌することにより調製した。
 続いて、調製した電解液61を、真空注入法を用いて導電部材8の注入口8aよりセルに注入した後、注入口8aを紫外線硬化型封口剤フォトレックA-720-180(図3(f2):封口部材801)で封止することにより、電解質層6を形成し、電気化学表示素子1を完成させた(図3(f1))。
 このようにして製作した電気化学表示素子1に、図3(f2)に示す透明導電基板2の給電端子部203aと電極基板3の図示しない薄膜トランジスタの給電端子部に駆動信号(駆動電圧)を印加し表示動作を行ったが、表示領域Aの中心部から周縁部に渡り表示濃度ムラの非常に少ない良好な画像が得られることが確認できた。
 また、恒温恒湿試験として60℃、相対湿度90%の槽内に240時間放置し、試験前後の表示画像を比較したが、シール部材9の破損による表示状態の異常や導電部材8の劣化にともなう抵抗値上昇による表示濃度ムラのいずれも見られず、高い信頼性が確保されていることが確認できた。
 (実施例2)
 図4に、実施例2による電気化学表示素子1の製造工程の概要を示す。図4(a)~図4(f)における左図は断面模式図、右図は平面模式図である。本実施例は、実施形態2に係る電気化学表示素子1の製造実施例である。
 最初に、ガラス基板(図4(a):透明基板201)の表面に、スパッタリング法を用いてITOを厚さ110nmで成膜し(図4(a):透明導電膜203)、透明導電基板2を製作した。
 続いて、透明導電膜203の表示領域Aの外側周縁部の表面に、ディスペンサ法を用いて紫外線硬化・熱硬化併用型シール剤ワールドロックNo.717を環状に塗布し、シール部材9を形成した(図4(b1)、図4(b2))。尚、この時、ワールドロックNo.717中には予め導電性めっき層が表面に形成された粒径5.0μmの導電性粒子ミクロパールAU-205(積水化学工業社製)を1.5質量%混合しておいた(図4(b1):導電粒子901)。
 次に、ガラス基板(図4(c):基板301)の表面に、図示しないマトリクス状に配列した複数の薄膜トランジスタと、該複数の薄膜トランジスタに対応する複数の画素電極として厚さ100nmで銀パラジウム電極(図4(c):電極膜303)を形成し、アクティブマトリクス構造の電極基板3を製作した。尚、この時、基板301の表示領域Aの外側周縁部の表面に環状に、透明導電膜203用の銀パラジウム電極(図4(c):給電電極305)を同時に形成した。また、電極膜303と給電電極305とは、基板301の表面に、スパッタリング法を用いて銀-パラジウム電極100nmを成膜した後、フォトリソグラフィー法を用いてパタニングし形成した。また、電極基板3の表示領域A内の図示しない画素電極のスルーホールと薄膜トランジスタの給電端子部以外は、絶縁膜にて覆った。
 続いて、給電電極305の表面に、スクリーン印刷法を用いて導電性ペーストであるドータイトFA-401CA(藤倉化成社製)を厚さ25μm、断面形状が台形で環状に成膜し、導電部材8を形成した(図4(d))。
 続いて、導電部材8が形成された電極基板3を、150℃、30分間の加熱処理を行うことにより、溶媒を乾燥させ、導電部材8を低抵抗の導電性樹脂配線とした。
 次に、電解液61を調製した。電解液61としては、ジメチルスルホキシド1.0g中に、高分子バインダーとして平均分子量が20万のポリエチレンオキシドを0.2g、無機酸化物微粒子として二酸化チタンCR-90(石原産業社製)を0.48g、酸化還元活性物質としてp-トルエンスルホン酸銀を0.04g、添加剤として2-メルカプトベンズイミダゾールを0.08g加えて加熱溶解して調製した。尚、電解液61には、セルの厚みを規定するためのギャップ制御材として直径30umの球形粒子ミクロパールGS-230(積水化学工業社製)を0.5質量%分散させておいた。
 次に、調製した電解液61をディスペンサ法を用いて、電極基板3の電極膜303の表面にドット状のパターンで塗布した。(図4(e1)、図4(e2))。
 次に、シール部材9が形成された透明導電基板2と電解液61が塗布された電極基板3とを、貼り合せ装置である真空チャンバー内に導入し、透明導電基板2の透明導電膜203と電極基板3の電極膜303とを対向させて位置合せした後、減圧し貼り合わせて電解液61を密封することにより、電解質層6を形成した(図4(f1))。尚、この時、導電部材8は、シール部材9に混合しておいた導電粒子901を介して、透明導電基板2の透明導電膜203に電気的に接続された。
 続いて、貼り合せ後、真空チャンバーから取り出し、透明導電基板2側から紫外線を100mW/cmの照度で30秒間照射し、シール部材9を紫外線硬化させた。紫外線硬化後、120℃で30分間熱処理し、シール部材9を熱硬化させることにより、電気化学表示素子1を完成させた(図4(f1))。
 このようにして製作した電気化学表示素子1に、図4(f2)に示す電極基板3に形成された透明導電膜203用の給電端子部305aと電極基板3の図示しない薄膜トランジスタの給電端子部に駆動信号(駆動電圧)を印加し表示動作を行ったが、実施例1の場合と同様に、表示領域Aの中心部から周縁部に渡り表示濃度ムラの非常に少ない良好な画像が得られることが確認できた。
 また、恒温恒湿試験として60℃、相対湿度90%の槽内に240時間放置し、試験前後の表示画像を比較したが、シール部材9の破損による表示状態の異常や導電部材8の劣化にともなう抵抗値上昇による表示濃度ムラのいずれも見られず、高い信頼性が確保されていることが確認できた。
 このように本発明の実施形態に係る電気化学表示素子1においては、透明導電膜203の表示領域Aの外側周縁部に対向して環状に形成され、該透明導電膜203に電気的に接続される導電部材8を設け、該導電部材8を電解質層6を密封するシール部材9で覆う構成とした。
 透明導電膜203の周縁に電気的に接続される環状の導電部材8を設けることにより、給電電極(給電端子部203a、給電端子部305a)から表示媒体(電解質層6)に電流が流れるまでの経路の抵抗成分を低減させることができ、該抵抗成分による経路の電圧降下を小さくすることができる。これにより、表示濃度ムラを抑えることができる。
 また、導電部材8とシール部材9を並走させた2重構造にすることなく、導電部材8をシール部材9で覆う構成、すなわち2つの部材を略同じ位置で重ねるように配する構成としたので、狭額縁化を図ることができる。
 また、導電部材8は、シール部材9で覆われているので、外気、及び電解質層6に触れることはない。これにより、導電部材8の腐食や劣化を抑えることができ、信頼性を高めることができる。
 また、電気化学表示素子1を、大画面化が進展するアクティブマトリクス構造の表示素子1とすることにより、表示面積が拡大しても表示濃度ムラを抑えることができる。

Claims (4)

  1.  透明基板の表面に透明導電膜が形成された透明導電基板と、
     前記透明導電基板に対向して配され、電極膜を有する電極基板と、
     前記透明導電膜と前記電極膜との間に形成された電解質層と、
     前記電解質層の周縁に環状に形成され、該電解質層を密封するシール部材と、を有する電気化学表示素子であって、
     前記透明導電膜に電気的に接続されるとともに、前記シール部材で覆われた導電部材を有することを特徴とする電気化学表示素子。
  2.  前記導電部材は、前記透明導電基板の前記透明導電膜の表面に形成されていることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の電気化学表示素子。
  3.  前記導電部材は、前記電極基板の周縁部に形成され、
     前記シール部材には、導電粒子が分散され、
     前記導電部材は、前記シール部材に分散された前記導電粒子を介して、前記透明導電基板の前記透明導電膜に電気的に接続されていることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の電気化学表示素子。
  4.  前記電気化学表示素子は、アクティブマトリクス構造であって、
     前記電極基板は、
     前記電極基板の表面にマトリクス状に配列された複数の薄膜トランジスタを有し、
     前記電極膜により、前記複数の薄膜トランジスタに対応する複数の画素電極が形成されていることを特徴とする請求項1から3の何れか1項に記載の電気化学表示素子。
