 本発明は、表示装置、特に直視型の表示装置に関する。
 従来から、テレビや情報表示用の表示装置において、複数の表示装置を配列する(タイリング技術ということがある)ことによって大画面の表示装置を擬似的に実現することが試みられている。しかしながら、このタイリング技術を用いると、複数の表示装置の継ぎ目が見えるという問題がある。

 以下、図面を参照して本発明による実施形態を説明するが、本発明は例示する実施形態に限定されるものではない。
 図1に、本発明による実施形態の直視型の液晶表示装置100aを模式的に示す。図1(a)は、液晶表示装置100aを観察者側から見た模式的な上面図であり、図1(b)は、図1(a)における1B-1B’線に沿った模式的な断面図である。
 図1(a)および(b)に示すように、液晶表示装置100aは、液晶表示パネル100と、液晶表示パネル100の観察者側に配置された透光性カバー200とを備える。液晶表示パネル100は、複数の画素が行および列を有するマトリクス状に配列された表示領域120と、表示領域120の外側に設けられた額縁領域130とを有する。表示領域120は、額縁領域130に隣接する周辺表示領域125と、周辺表示領域125以外の領域の中央表示領域124から構成されている。透光性カバー200は、平板部250とレンズ部210とを有している。
 液晶表示パネル100の周辺表示領域125とは、表示領域120の内、その観察者側に透光性カバー200のレンズ部210が配置される領域をいい、平板部250は中央表示領域124上に配置される。周辺表示領域125から出射される光をレンズ部210によって屈折させることによって、周辺表示領域125に形成される画像を周辺表示領域125および額縁領域130から構成される領域に拡大する。
 ここで、行方向を第1の方向D1とし、列方向を第2の方向D2とすると、表示領域120と額縁領域130との間には、第1の方向D1に延びる第1境界線B1、および第1境界線B1と交差し第2の方向D2に延びる第2境界線B2が存在する。周辺表示領域125と中央表示領域124との間には、第1の方向D1に延びる第3境界線B3と、第3境界線B3と交差し第2の方向D2に延びる第4境界線B4が存在する。
 周辺表示領域125は、第3境界線B3と第4境界線B4とが交差する点Cを通り第1境界線B1に直交する直線L1と、点Cを通り第2境界線B2に直交する直線L2と、第1境界線B1と、第2境界線B2とで囲まれた第1周辺表示部分121を有する。
 また、額縁領域130は、第1周辺表示部分121に第1境界線B1または第2境界線B2を介して隣接する第1額縁部分131を有している。第1額縁部分131は、第1境界線B1、第2境界線B2、直線L1および直線L2と液晶表示パネル100の外縁によって規定される部分である。
 透光性カバー200のレンズ部210は、図1(b)に示すように屈曲した表面を有している。図1(a)においては、レンズ部210の表面(観察者側表面)が屈曲している様子を等高線で示している。なお、ここでは簡単のために等高線の間隔を一定にしているが、これに限られない。レンズ部210の観察者側表面の好ましい形状については、後に詳述する。
 本発明による実施形態の液晶表示装置100aが有する透光性カバー200のレンズ部210は、第1周辺表示部分121から出射される光を屈折させることによって、第1周辺表示部分121に形成される画像を第1周辺表示部分121および第1額縁部分131から構成される領域に拡大する。すなわち、図1(a)に示すように、レンズ部210は、第1周辺表示部分121内の画素171から出射された光を、点Cから画素171に向かう方向X1に屈折させる。同様に、第1周辺表示部分121内の各画素から出射された光は、点Cからそれぞれその画素に向かう方向に屈折される。液晶表示装置100aの表示面に垂直方向から画像を観察すると、液晶表示パネル100の第1周辺表示部分121に形成される画像が第1周辺表示部分121および第1額縁部分131から構成される領域に拡大されて表示されることになる。すなわち、第1周辺表示部分121および第1額縁部分131の上に配置された、レンズ部210の部分は、第1周辺表示部分121から出射された光を、横方向D1でも縦方向D2でもない方向(例えばX1)に屈折させることによって、第1額縁部分131を見え難くする。
 以下、図2および図3を参照して、より詳細に説明する。
 図2は、液晶表示パネル100の角部付近を拡大して模式的に示す上面図である。図2に示すように、表示領域120と額縁領域130との間には、第1境界線B1と第2境界線B2が存在し、周辺表示領域125と中央表示領域124との間には、第3境界線B3と第4境界線B4が存在する。第1周辺表示部分121は、直線L1、直線L2、第1境界線B1および第2境界線B2で囲まれた部分である。第1額縁部分131は、額縁領域130内の、直線L1、直線L2、第1境界線B1、第2境界線B2および額縁領域130の外縁135に囲まれた部分である。
 次に、図3を参照する。図3は、液晶表示装置100aのX1―Y1平面における断面図である。ここで、Y1軸は、図2に示した点Cを通り、液晶表示パネル100の表示面19に垂直な軸である。
 液晶表示パネル100は、公知の任意の液晶表示パネルであってよく、上基板11および下基板12を有し、上基板11と下基板12との間には液晶層13が設けられている。下基板12には、例えばTFTや画素電極が設けられ、上基板11には、例えばカラーフィルタ層や対向電極が設けられている。上基板11の上方および下基板12の下方には必要に応じて偏光板が配置される。液晶表示パネル100の額縁領域130には、シール部16や駆動回路等が形成されている。液晶表示パネル100の下方には、バックライト装置15が設けられている。バックライト装置15は、例えば、互いに平行な複数の蛍光管を備える直下型バックライト装置である。
 図3に、表示領域120に配列された画素から出射された光線を破線で示す。図3に示すように、第1周辺表示部分121内の画素から出射された光は、レンズ部210に入射し、X1方向に屈折される。このとき、レンズ部210に入射した光は、レンズ部210の観察者側表面(「出射面」ともいう。)で屈折され、第1周辺表示部分121および第1額縁部分131の上に配置された、レンズ部210の部分の観察者側表面から出射される。レンズ部210の観察者側表面から出射された光は、表示面19に垂直な方向に直進する。従って、液晶表示装置100aの表示面に垂直な方向から画像を観察すると、液晶表示パネル100の第1周辺表示部分121に形成される画像が第1周辺表示部分121および第1額縁部分131から構成される領域に拡大されて表示されるので、第1額縁部分131は見えない。
 液晶表示装置100aは液晶表示パネル100の額縁領域130の全ての領域に対応するレンズ部210を有するので、観察者には額縁領域130が全く見えないようにできる。しかしながら、これに限らず、額縁領域130の一部(例えば第1額縁部分131)のみを見えなくすることもできる。なお、第1額縁部分131のような角部以外の部分は、従来の任意の方法によって見え難くしてもよいが、透光性カバー200として一体となったレンズ部を用いることが好ましい。
 次に、液晶表示装置100aを2方向にタイリングした表示装置を説明する。液晶表示装置100aを縦方向および横方向の2方向にタイリングすることにより、図4に示す大画面の液晶表示装置100Aを得ることができる。なお、タイリングは公知の方法により行うことができる。図4は、液晶表示装置100aが2×2(×は乗算を示す)で配列された液晶表示装置100Aを模式的に示す上面図である。図4には、各液晶表示装置100aのレンズ部210の屈曲形状を等高線で示している。液晶表示装置100Aにおいて、継ぎ目が無い表示を実現するためには、各液晶表示装置100aの表示領域120に対して横方向(第1の方向D1)でも縦方向(第2の方向D2)でもない角部に存在する非表示領域138(図4に太斜線を付して示す。)を見え難くする必要がある。
 上述のように、各液晶表示装置100aでは、第1額縁部分131を見え難くすることができる。液晶表示装置100Aの非表示領域138は、4つの液晶表示装置100aの第1額縁部分131に含まれているので、液晶表示装置100Aでは、非表示領域138を見え難くすることができる。
 上述のように、図1(a)に示す液晶表示装置100aでは、液晶表示パネル100の額縁領域130の全ての領域に対応するレンズ部210を有しているので、継ぎ目が無い画像を表示することができるとともに、継ぎ目となる部分以外の額縁部分も見え難くすることができる。このとき、液晶表示装置100Aは、さらに大画面で表示することができる。
 上記の実施形態では、表示パネルとして液晶表示パネルを用いた液晶表示装置を例示しているが、本発明による実施形態の表示装置に用いる表示パネルは、これに限られない。表示パネルとして、たとえば、PDP用表示パネル、有機EL表示パネル、電気泳動表示パネル等を用いることもできる。また、液晶表示パネル100に代えて、液晶表示パネル100が筐体に収められた液晶表示ユニットを用いることもできる。
 また、図1、2、3および4に示すように、上記の実施形態では、液晶表示パネル100を矩形としている。また、第1の方向D1と第2の方向D2とは直交している。しかしながら、液晶表示パネルの形状および画素が配列される方向は、これに限られない。
 また、図3では、中央表示領域124内の画素から出射された光線も図示している。中央表示領域124上に配置されている平板部250の出射面は、表示面19に平行である。中央表示領域124から出射された光は、平板部250に入射し、平板部250内を表示面19に垂直な方向に直進し、観察者側に出射される。
 次に、レンズ部210のうち、第1周辺表示部分121上および第1額縁部分131上に配置された部分の好ましい形状を説明する。以下、この部分を第1レンズ体211という。
 第1レンズ体211は、回転体を、回転軸を含む2つの平面で切り取って得られる立体の一部分であることが好ましい。このとき、回転軸がY1軸に一致するようにこの回転体の一部分が配置されていることが好ましい。すなわち、回転軸が、点Cを通り、第3境界線B3と第4境界線B4とに垂直となるように配置されていることが好ましい。本明細書において、回転体とは、平面図形をそれと同平面に位置する直線の周りに360°回転することにより得られる立体図形をいうこととする。また、この直線を回転軸ということとする。
 図5は第1レンズ体211の模式的な斜視図である。図5には、第1レンズ体211を含む、Y1軸を回転軸とする回転体の一部分211’を示す。回転体の一部分211’は、平面211sをY1軸の周りに回転させた回転体の中心角が90°となる部分(全体の1/4の部分)である。回転体の一部分211’は、平面211sをY1軸の周りに回転させた回転体を平面S1およびS2で切り取って得られる。平面211sは、第1境界線B1と第2境界線B2が交差する点C’およびY1軸を含む平面である。また、平面S1は、Y1軸を含み第1境界線B1に垂直な平面であり、平面S2は、Y1軸を含み第2境界線B2に垂直な平面である。第1レンズ体211は、回転体の一部分211’を、額縁領域130の外縁135を通り表示面19に垂直な2つの平面S3およびS4で切り取って得られる形状を有する。平面S3は外縁135の第1の方向に延びる部分を通り、平面S4は外縁135の第2の方向に延びる部分を通る。平面211sの形状については後に詳述する。
 第1レンズ体211の出射面のX1-Y1平面との交線211cは、図3に示す曲線211cに相当する。第1レンズ体211はY1軸を回転軸とする回転体の一部であるので、第1レンズ体211の出射面と、X1-Y1平面以外の、Y1を通り表示面19に垂直な平面との交線は、交線211cと同様の曲線である。従って、第1周辺表示部分121内のX1軸上以外にある各画素から出射された光も、図3に示したレンズ部210に入射する光と同様に、点Cからそれぞれの画素に向かう方向に屈折される。このことにより第1額縁部分131全体を見え難くすることができる。
 図5に示す第1レンズ体211は、観察者側表面が軸対称曲面であるレンズの対称軸を含む一部分であり、その対称軸がY1軸と重なるように配置されたものであるということができる。また、第1レンズ体211の観察者側表面は、Y1軸を軸として、平面S1上の曲線または平面S2上の曲線を回転させて得られる軸対称曲面の一部であるということができる。回転体211’が回転体であるので、これらの曲線は図3に示す曲線211cと同様の形状である。また、第1レンズ体211は、表面が軸対称曲面である平凸レンズの一部であるということができる。
 本実施形態の液晶表示パネル100は、矩形であるので、第1レンズ体211は、回転体211’を互いに直交する平面S1およびS2で切り取って得られる立体図形の一部としている。液晶表示パネル100が、矩形でないときには、液晶表示パネルの角部の形状により、回転体211’を切り取る平面を選択すればよい。
 第1レンズ体211は、第1周辺表示部分121内の複数の画素のうち、点Cと画素171とを通る直線上にある複数の画素から出射された光が、第1レンズ体211の観察者側表面から出射される位置の間隔を略等しくするように光を屈折させるように設計されることが好ましい。このように設計された第1レンズ体211により、第1周辺表示部分121および第1額縁部分131から構成される領域に歪みが無い画像を表示することができる。このことを以下説明する。
 説明のため、図6に示すようにX1-Y1座標系を設定する。図6は、液晶表示装置100aの第1レンズ体211付近を拡大して示す斜視図である。X1-Y1座標系の原点は、第3境界線B3と第4境界線B4とが交差する点Cとする。X1軸は、原点Cおよび画素171の中心を通る軸とし、Y1軸は、原点Cを通り表示面19に垂直な軸とする。以下では、X1-Y1平面上の点を(x、y)と表すことにする。
 液晶表示装置100aのX1-Y1平面における断面を図7に示す。第1周辺表示部分121のX1軸方向における幅をL21とし、第1額縁部分のX1軸方向における幅をL31とする。図7に示すように、第1レンズ体211はx=0~(L21+L31)の領域に配置されている。
 ここで、画像圧縮率aをa=L21/(L21+L31)と定義する。aは第1周辺表示部分121の幅L21および第1額縁部分の幅L31から決まる定数であり、0<a<1である。画像圧縮率aは、第1レンズ体211上には画像が1/a倍に拡大されて表示されることを意味する。このとき、第1周辺表示部分121に形成する画像を、中央表示領域124に形成する画像と比較して画像圧縮率aだけ圧縮すると、第1レンズ体211上に表示される画像が中央表示領域上に表示される画像と同じ大きさとなるので好ましい。もちろん、このように圧縮されていなくても、本発明の効果が失われるものではない。
 第1レンズ体211の観察者側表面とX1―Y1平面との交線211c上の点を(x、y)とする。X1軸上のある点(ax、0)から出る光線61を考える。点(ax、0)は第1周辺表示部分121内の点とする(0<ax<L21)。図7に示すように、光線61は第1レンズ体211に入射し、点(x、y)を通って、観察者側へ出射されY軸に平行に進む(光線61’)。第1レンズ体211は、このように、X1軸上の点から出る光線が観察者側表面からY1軸に平行(表示面19に垂直)に進むように光線を屈折させる。入射する光線が観察者側表面を通る位置のx座標が1/a倍となるように、第1レンズ体211は設計される。
 このように設計された第1レンズ体211により、歪みが無い画像が表示されることを、図8を参照して説明する。図8は、図7同様に、液晶表示装置100aのX1-Y1平面における断面図である。第1周辺表示部分121内の画素171の中心(ax1、0)から出射される光線611と、画素171にX1軸方向正側に隣接する画素から出射された光線612を考える(図8において、画素171は不図示。)。光線612は(ax2、0)から出るとする(0<ax1<ax2<L21)。光線611は、第1レンズ体211に入射し、屈折し、観察者側表面上の点(x1、y1)を通って、観察者側へ出射され、Y1軸に平行に進む(光線611’)。同様に光線612は、第1レンズ体211に入射し、屈折し、観察者側表面上の点(x2、y2)を通って観察者側へ出射され、Y1軸に平行に進む(光線612’)。ここで、(x1、y1)は、曲線211c上の、X1座標がx1の点であり、(x2、y2)は、曲線211c上の、X1座標がx2の点である(0<x1<x2<L21+L31)。
 光線611と光線612とのX1軸方向における間隔はax2-ax1=a×(x2-x1)であり、光線611’と光線612’とのX1軸方向の間隔はx2-x1である(×は乗算を表す)。すなわち、X1軸上の互いに隣接する2つの画素から出る光線の、X1軸方向における間隔は、各光線が第1レンズ体211を透過して、1/a倍に拡大される。
 上記のように、第1周辺表示部分121から出射された光のうち、X1軸上にある互いに隣接する2つの画素から出射された光線のX1軸方向における間隔は、第1レンズ体211を透過して、1/a倍に拡大される。同様の原理により、画素171以外の、X1軸上にある2つの画素から出射される光線の間隔も、1/a倍に拡大される。また、同様に、第1周辺表示部分121内の、X1軸上にない2つの画素から出射された光線の間隔も1/a倍に拡大される。このことにより、液晶表示パネル100の第1周辺表示部分121に形成される画像は、第1周辺表示部分121および第1額縁部分131から構成される領域に1/a倍に拡大される。したがって、第1周辺表示部分121および第1額縁部分131から構成される領域に歪みが無い画像が表示される。
 第1レンズ体211を、図7および図8に示す曲線211cと、X1軸と、Y1軸とにより囲まれる平面図形をY1軸の周りに回転させて得られる回転体を切り取って得られる形状とすることにより、上記のように、第1周辺表示部分121内の任意の2つの画素から出る光線の間隔を1/a倍に拡大することができる。その結果、第1周辺表示部分121に形成された画像が拡大され、第1周辺表示部分121および第1額縁部分131の観察者側に歪みが無い画像が表示される。
 上記のように歪みが無い表示を行うには、第1レンズ体の出射面は、第1周辺表示部分121内の複数の画素から出射された光のX1座標を一様に1/a倍に拡大するように設計すればよい。完全に歪みが無い表示を行うには、交線211cは非球面関数で規定される曲線である必要がある。最適な非球面関数は、例えばORA社のLightTools等の光学設計ソフトウェアを使用することで容易に解を得ることができるが、以下に示す手法によっても関数を得ることができる。図7を参照して、第1周辺表示部分121に形成される画像を1/a倍に拡大するような第1レンズ体211の最適な形状を表す関数の算出方法を説明する。
 上述したように、X1軸上の点(ax、0)から出る光線61は第1レンズ体211に入射する。光線61は第1レンズ体211の観察者側表面のX1―Y1平面との交線211c上の点(x、y)を通ってY1軸に平行に進む(光線61’)。光線61’は、点(x、y)においてスネルの法則に従い屈折する。
 入射角をθ、屈折角をθ’、第1レンズ体211の屈折率をnとすると、以下の式(1)が成り立つ。

 交線211c(x=0~L21+L31)を表す式をf(x)とする。交線211c上の任意の点(x、y)における接線62の傾きは、f(x)の導関数であるf’(x)で表され、以下の式(2)が成り立つ。

 上記式(3)と式(4)が、X=0~L21+L31の領域において等しくなるように、関数f(x)を算出すればよい。
 関数f(x)として、下記式(5)に示す非球面関数を用いると、第1レンズ体211の好ましい形状が得られる。

 式(5)のf(x)で示される非球面関数のグラフの形状は、円錐定数kの値によって決まる。したがって、非球面関数の式(5)においては円錐定数kの値が重要である。検討の結果、画像圧縮率aと円錐定数kの関係式は下記式(6)で表される(特願2008-166458参照)。参考のために、特願2008-166458号の開示内容の全てを本明細書に援用する。

 式(6)に従って、円錐定数kを算出して第1レンズ体211を設計し、透光性カバー200を形成すれば、画像圧縮率aで圧縮された画像が1/a倍に拡大されて第1レンズ体211上に表示されるので、第1レンズ体211上に歪みが無い画像を表示することができる。
 なお、透光性カバー200は、たとえばアクリル樹脂を用いて射出成形により製造される。得られた透光性カバー200の表面形状は、製造誤差によりその円錐定数kが式(6)に厳密に従わないことがある。しかし、円錐定数kが式(6)に概ね従う非球面となっていれば、十分な効果が得られる。効果が得られる範囲は主観評価によって決められ得る。
 次に、最適な円錐定数kを求める方法を説明する。図6において、X1軸を点C’(第1境界線B1と第2境界線B2とが交差する点)および点C(第3境界線B3と第4境界線B4とが交差する点)を通る軸としたときを考える。このときの第1周辺表示部分121のX1軸方向の長さをL21’とし、第1額縁部分131のX1軸方向の長さをL31’とする。ここで、画像圧縮率a=L21/(L21+L31)は、X1軸を第1周辺表示部分121内のいずれの画素および点Cを通る軸としても一定である。従って、画像圧縮率aは、L21’およびL31’を用いて、a=L21’/(L21’+L31’)と表すこともできる。L21’=49.9mmとし、L31’=9.4mmとした場合、a≒0.841となる。上記式(6)において、a=0.841を代入すると、最適な円錐定数kは1.46と求まる。このように、表示領域120の角の点C’と液晶表示パネル100の角を通る直線上において、画像圧縮率a=L21’/(L21’+L31’)を決めればよい。すなわち、点Cの位置(L21’の長さ)を決めればよい。
 次に、最適な曲率半径Rを求める方法を、図9を参照して説明する。曲率半径Rは、曲率cを用いて、R=1/cと表されるので、曲率cを求めれば曲率半径Rを求めることができる。曲率cは、次のようにして求めることができる。図9は、図6におけるX1軸を点C’および点Cを通る軸とした場合の、液晶表示装置100aのX1-Y1断面図である。
 点C’から出る光線61を考える。点C’は第1周辺表示部分121の外縁上の点に相当するので、点C’から出る光線61は、第1レンズ体211の出射面の外側端部から表示面19の法線方向に出射される。このことは、図9において、(L21’、0)から出る光線61が、第1レンズ体211の出射面上の点P(L21’+L31’、f(L21’+L31’))から出てY1軸に平行に進むことに相当する(光線61’)。点C’から出る光線61が、点PからY1軸に平行に進む条件を求める。上記式(1)、式(2)、式(5)と、求めた条件とから、曲率cが求まる。この曲率cを用いて、最適な曲率半径Rは、84mmと求まる。なお、平板部250の厚さh=40mmとした。また、透光性カバー200の屈折率nは1.49(アクリル樹脂)とした。また、ここで示した曲率cの計算は、上記の光学設計ソフトウェアを用いて容易に行うことができる。
 次に、画像圧縮率aの好ましい範囲を説明する。画像圧縮率が低い場合(例えばa<0.7)では、1/aの値が大きくなり、各画素は大きく拡大される。このため、画素と画素の間にあるブラックマトリクスが目立って見えてしまうことがあり、表示不良となる場合が多い。また画像圧縮率が高い場合(例えばa>0.9)では、額縁領域の幅に対して大きいレンズ部が必要となるために、あまり好ましくない。
 したがって、画像圧縮率aは0.7~0.9程度が好ましい。式(6)を用いて、画像圧縮率a=0.7および0.9における円錐定数kは、それぞれk≒0.38および2.4と算出される。よって、円錐定数kの好ましい範囲は、0.38以上2.4以下であるといえる。もちろん、上記範囲外でも、本発明の効果が失われるものではない。
 なお、画像圧縮率aは0<a<1の範囲であるため、円錐定数kの値は0<k<5.26の範囲にある。このkの範囲は、式(6)よりa=0および1におけるkを算出することで求まる。
 上述の平面211sを、非球面関数によって規定される曲線を含む平面図形とし、この平面図形をY1軸の周りに回転して得られる回転体を切り取って第1レンズ体211とすれば、第1周辺表示部分121および第1額縁部分131から構成される領域に歪みが無い画像を表示することができる。すなわち、第1レンズ体211の出射面の断面が非球面関数によって規定される曲線であることにより、第1周辺表示部分121および第1額縁部分131から構成される領域に歪みが無い画像が表示される。
 表示領域120には、複数の画素が第1の方向D1および第2の方向D2に等間隔に配列されている。画素が等間隔に配列されているときには、第1周辺表示部分121内のX1軸上にある画素に供給される表示信号は、中央表示領域124内の画素に供給される表示信号と比較して、X1軸方向に一様に圧縮されていることが好ましい。このとき、X1軸上にある画素から出射された光で形成される画像は、中央表示領域124に形成される画像と同じ大きさに拡大される。このことにより、中央表示領域124、第1周辺表示部分121、および第1額縁部分131の全体に歪みが無い表示を行うことができる。
 なお、X1軸上にある複数の画素に供給される表示信号をX1軸方向に圧縮することは、表示信号を第1の方向D1および第2の方向D2に同じ圧縮率で一様に圧縮することと等価である。また、複数の画素が配列される方向が互いに直交していない場合には、第1周辺表示部分121内の画素に供給される表示信号は、点Cを通り第1境界線B1に垂直な方向、および点Cを通り第2境界線B2に垂直な方向に一様に圧縮すればよい。なお、複数の画素が配列される方向が互いに直交している場合には、点Cを通り第1境界線B1に垂直な方向は、第2の方向D2に一致し、点Cを通り第2境界線B2に垂直な方向は、第1の方向D1に一致する。
 図10を参照して、液晶表示パネル100から出て、透光性カバー200を透過する光の光線追跡シミュレーションの結果を示す。シミュレーションでは、第1レンズ体211の出射面の断面の形状を上記式(5)に示す非球面関数によって規定される曲線であるとした。また、上記式(5)において、円錐係数kを1.46とし曲率半径を84mmとした。図10には、第1レンズ体211付近の、X1-Y1断面における光線追跡シミュレーションの結果を示す。
 図10に示すように、中央表示領域124に配列された画素から出る光は、平板部250に入射し、平板部250内を表示面19に垂直な方向に直進して観察者側に出射され、表示面19に垂直な方向に進む。第1周辺表示部分121に配列された画素から出る光は、第1レンズ体211に入射し、X1軸の正側へ屈折して観察者側に出射され、液晶表示パネル100の表示面19に垂直な方向に進む。このことにより、第1額縁部分131の前面に画像が表示されるので、第1額縁部分131が見え難くなる。
 また、図10に示すように、第1レンズ体211の出射面から観察者側へ出射される光はX1軸方向の間隔が等しい。また、第1周辺表示部分121に形成される画像は上述した画像圧縮率aで圧縮されており、第1レンズ体211の出射面から出射される光の間隔と平板部250の出射面から出射される光の間隔とは等しい。このことにより、第1レンズ体211の観察者側および平板部250の観察者側には歪みが無い画像が表示される。
 次に、液晶表示装置100aの角部以外の部分の好ましい構成を説明する。
 まず、図2を参照して、液晶表示パネル100の角部以外の部分を説明する。液晶表示パネル100において、周辺表示領域125は、第1周辺表示部分121、第1境界線B1、および第3境界線B3に隣接する第2周辺表示部分122と、第1周辺表示部分121、第2境界線B2、および第4境界線B4とに隣接する第3周辺表示部分123とをさらに有する。また、額縁領域130は、第1額縁部分131および第1境界線B1に隣接する第2額縁部分132と、第1額縁部分131および第2境界線B2に隣接する第3額縁部分133とをさらに有する。
 続いて、透光性カバー200の全体の構成を示し、レンズ部210の第1レンズ体211以外の部分の構成を説明する。図11は透光性カバー200の斜視図である。レンズ部210は、透光性カバー200の、第1の方向D1に延びる2辺と、第2の方向D2に延びる2辺と、4箇所の角部に設けられている。レンズ部210は、第1の方向D1に延びる2辺にレンズ体212および222、第2の方向D2に延びる2辺にレンズ体213および223、4箇所の角部にレンズ体211、221、231および241を有する。
 図12はレンズ部210の角部である第1レンズ体211付近を拡大して示す、液晶表示装置100aの模式的な斜視図である。図12に示すように、透光性カバー200の、第1の方向D1に延びる辺に設けられたレンズ体212は第2周辺表示部分122および第2額縁部分132の上に配置されている(以下、第2レンズ体212という。)。第2の方向D2に延びる辺に設けられたレンズ体213は第3周辺表示部分123および第3額縁部分133の上に配置されている(以下、第3レンズ体213という。)。
 第2レンズ体212は、第2周辺表示部分122内の複数の画素から出射された光を第2周辺表示部分122から第2額縁部分132に向かう方向に屈折させるように設計されることが好ましい。このとき、第2周辺表示部分122内の画素から出射された光は、第2周辺表示部分122および第2額縁部分132から構成される領域に出射される。このことにより、第2周辺表示部分122に形成された画像が第2周辺表示部分122および第2額縁部分132から構成される領域に拡大されて表示されるので、第2額縁部分132を見え難くすることができる。
 このことを、図12および図13を参照して説明する。図12に示すように、第3境界線B3上に原点O2を設定する。また、原点O2から第2の方向D2にX2軸を設定する。さらに、原点O2から表示面19に垂直な方向にY2軸を設定する。図13は第2レンズ体212の第1境界線B1に垂直な平面における断面である。第2周辺表示部分122のX2軸方向における幅をL22とし、第2額縁部分132のX2軸方向における幅をL32とする。第2レンズ体212は、x=0~(L22+L32)の領域に配置されている。
 図13に示すように、第1レンズ体211と同様に、X2軸上の(ax、0)から出る光線61は第2レンズ体212に入射し、第2レンズ体212の出射面上の点(x、y)を通って、観察者側へ出射され、Y2軸に平行に進む(光線61’)。第2レンズ体212は、このように、X2軸上の画素から出射された光を第2周辺表示部分122から第2額縁部分132に向かう方向(すなわち、X2軸の正方向)に屈折させる。入射する光線が観察者側表面を通る位置のx座標が1/a倍となるように、第2レンズ体212は設計されている。このことにより、X2軸上の画素から出射された光を、x=0~(L22+L32)の領域の観察者側に出射させることができる。このことにより、第2額縁部分132を見え難くすることができる。
 第3レンズ体213は、第3周辺表示部分123内の複数の画素から出射された光を第3周辺表示部分123から第3額縁部分133に向かう方向に屈折させるように設計されることが好ましい。このとき、第3周辺表示部分123内の画素から出射された光は、第3周辺表示部分123および第3額縁部分133から構成される領域に出射されるので、第3額縁部分133を見え難くすることができる。このことを、図14を参照して説明する。図12に示すように第2境界線B2上に原点O3を設定し、原点O3から表示面19に垂直にY3軸を設定し、原点O3を通り第2境界線B2およびY3軸に垂直にX3軸を設定する。図14は、第3レンズ体213のX3-Y3平面における断面図である。第3周辺表示部分123のX3軸方向における幅をL23とし、第3額縁部分133のX3軸方向における幅をL33とする。第3レンズ体213は、x=0~(L23+L33)の領域に配置されている。
 図14に示すように、第1レンズ体211および第2レンズ体212と同様に、X3軸上の(ax、0)から出る光線61は第3レンズ体213に入射し、第3レンズ体213の出射面上の点(x、y)を通って、観察者側へ出射され、Y3軸に平行に進む(光線61’)。このことにより、X3軸上の画素から出射された光を、x=0~(L23+L33)の領域の観察者側に出射させることができ、第3額縁部分133を見え難くすることができる。
 また、第2レンズ体212は、第2周辺表示部分122内の複数の画素から出射された光が、第2レンズ体212の出射面から出射される位置の、X2軸方向における間隔を略等しくするように、光を屈折させるように設計されることが好ましい。このとき、第1レンズ体211と同様に、第2レンズ体212の観察者側に歪みが無い画像を表示することができる。
 また、第3レンズ体213は、第2レンズ体212と同様に、第3周辺表示部分123内の複数の画素から出射された光が、第3レンズ体213の出射面から出射される位置の、X3軸方向における間隔を略等しくするように、光を屈折させるように設計されることが好ましい。このことにより、第3レンズ体213の観察者側に歪みが無い画像を表示することができる。
 また、第2レンズ体212の出射面と第1境界線B1に垂直な平面との交線(曲線212c)、および第3レンズ体213の観察者側表面と第2境界線B2に垂直な平面との交線(曲線213c)は、曲線211cと同じ関数で規定される曲線であることが好ましい。このとき、曲線212cは、上述の式(5)で表される非球面関数によって規定される曲線であれば、第2レンズ体212上に歪みが無い表示を行うことができる。同様に、曲線213cも、非球面関数によって規定される曲線であれば、第3レンズ体213上にも歪みが無い画像を表示することができる。このとき、第1額縁部分131、第2額縁部分132および第3額縁部分133の観察者側全体に歪みが無い画像を表示することができる。
 図15に第2レンズ体212付近の、X2-Y2断面における光線追跡シミュレーションの結果を示す。図10で示したX1-Y1断面におけるシミュレーション結果と同様に、図15に示すように、第2周辺表示部分122に配列された画素から出る光は、第2レンズ体212に入射し、X2軸の正側へ屈折して観察者側に出射されるので、液晶表示装置100aは、第2額縁部分132を見え難くすることができる。また、図15に示すように、第2レンズ体212の出射面から出射される光の間隔と平板部250の出射面から出射される光の間隔とは等しいので、第2レンズ体212上には歪みが無い画像が表示される。
 図16に第3レンズ体213付近の、X3-Y3断面における光線追跡シミュレーションの結果を示す。図16に示すように、図10に示したX1-Y1断面および図15に示したX2-Y2断面におけるシミュレーション結果と同様に、液晶表示装置100aは、第3額縁部分133を見え難くすることができる。また、第3レンズ体213上には歪みが無い画像が表示される。
 第2周辺表示部分122内の画素に供給される表示信号は、中央表示領域124内の画素に供給される表示信号と比較して、第2の方向D2に画像圧縮率aで一様に圧縮されていることが好ましい。同様に、第3周辺表示部分123内の画素に供給される表示信号は、中央表示領域124内の画素に供給される表示信号と比較して、第1の方向D1に圧縮率aで一様に圧縮されていることが好ましい。画像圧縮率aは、
  a=L21/(L21+L31)
   =L22/(L22+L32)
   =L23/(L23+L33)
となるように設計されることが好ましい。このとき、第1周辺表示部分121、第2周辺表示部分122および第3周辺表示部分123に形成される画像は、中央表示領域124に形成される画像と同じ大きさに拡大される。このことにより、第1レンズ体211、第2レンズ体212、第3レンズ体213および平板部250上に歪みが無い画像が表示される。
 なお、第1の方向D1と第2の方向D2が互いに直交しない場合には、第2周辺表示部分122内の画素に供給される表示信号を第1の方向D1に垂直な方向に画像圧縮率aで圧縮し、第3周辺表示部分123内の画素に供給される表示信号を第2の方向D2に垂直な方向に画像圧縮率aで圧縮することで、歪みが無い画像を表示することができる。
 図11に示す透光性カバー200において、レンズ体221、231、および241が第1レンズ体211と同様の構成を有し、レンズ体222が第2レンズ体212と同様の構成を有し、レンズ体223が第3レンズ体213と同様の構成を有するように設計すれば、液晶表示装置100aは、画面全体として額縁領域130を視認させないようにすることができ、また、画面全体として歪みが無い画像を表示することができる。
 上述したように、図4に示す液晶表示装置100aをタイリングした液晶表示装置100Aにおいては、非表示領域138を見え難くすることができる。第2レンズ体212および第3レンズ体213によって、各液晶表示装置100aが第1の方向D1または第2の方向D2に隣接する境界付近に形成される非表示領域を見え難くすることができる。このことにより、液晶表示装置100Aは、全ての非表示領域を見え難くすることができる。すなわち、液晶表示装置100Aは、継ぎ目が無い画像を表示することができる。また、各レンズ体が、上述の歪みが無い画像を表示する構成を有すると、液晶表示装置100Aの表示面全体に歪みが無く継ぎ目が無い画像を表示することができる。
 次に、本実施形態の液晶表示パネル100aの設計値を示す。ここで、図6において、X1軸を点C(第3境界線B3と第4境界線B4とが交差する点)およびC’(第1境界線B1と第2境界線B2とが交差する点)を通る軸とした場合の、第1周辺表示部分121のX1軸方向の幅L21’、および第1額縁部分131のX1軸方向における幅L31’を考える。第2周辺表示部分122のX2軸方向における幅はL22であり、第2額縁部分132のX2軸方向における幅はL32である。第3周辺表示部分123のX3軸方向における幅はL23であり、第3額縁部分133のX3軸方向における幅はL33である。本実施形態の液晶表示パネル100は矩形であり、L21’、L31’、L22、L32、L23およびL33の間に以下の関係が成り立つ。
  L21’2=L222+L232

 液晶表示パネル100では、それぞれのパラメータの値を以下の通りとした。
  L21’=49.9mm
  L22=26.6mm
  L23=42.5mm
  L31’=9.4mm
  L32=5mm
  L33=8mm
また、平板部250の厚さh=40mmとした。なお、前述の最適な円錐係数k(1.46)および曲率半径R(84mm)は、上記の値をもとに算出した値である。
 液晶表示装置100aによって表示される画像の例を図17に示す。図17(a)は、液晶表示パネル100の表示領域120に形成される画像を示す模式的な図である。図17(b)は、透光性カバー200の観察者側に表示される画像を示す模式的な図である。なお、図17(b)では、レンズ部210の屈曲形状を図示していない。
 図17(a)に示すように、第1周辺表示部分121に表示される文字A1は、中央表示領域124に表示される文字A4と比較して、第1の方向D1および第2の方向D2に一様に圧縮されている。また、第2周辺表示部分122に表示される文字A2は、文字A4と比較して第2の方向D2に一様に圧縮されている。第3周辺表示部分123に表示される文字A3は、第1の方向D1に一様に圧縮されている。
 図17(b)に示すように透光性カバー200を液晶表示パネル100の観察者側に配置すると、観察者には、文字A1(図17(a))は、第1レンズ体211により第1の方向D1および第2の方向D2に拡大されて文字A1’として視認される。また、文字A2は、第2レンズ体212により第2の方向D2に拡大されて文字A2’として視認され、文字A3は、第3レンズ体213により第1の方向D1に拡大されて文字A3’として視認される。文字A4は、平板部250の観察者側に、文字A4’として視認される。文字A1’、A2’、A3’およびA4’は全て同じ大きさに表示されている。このように、液晶表示装置100Aは、額縁領域130を見え難くするとともに、歪みが無い画像を表示させることができる。
 次に第1レンズ体211の外側端部の長さと額縁部分の幅との関係を説明する。図6に示すように、第1レンズ体211の角部の長さをh1とする。また、第1レンズ体211の、点Cを通り第1境界線B1に垂直な平面における断面の外側端部の長さをh2とする。また、第1レンズ体211の、点Cを通り第2境界線B2に垂直な平面における断面の外側端部の長さをh3とする。液晶表示パネル100において、第2額縁部分132の幅L32は第3額縁部分133の幅L33より小さい(図2)。このとき、第1レンズ体211は上述のように回転体の一部であるので、h2>h3である。また、図6に示すように、h2>h1でありh3>h1である。なお、L32がL33より大きいときには、h2<h3となる。また、第1レンズ体211の形状が上述のような回転体の一部でない場合であっても、h2>h1でありh3>h1であれば、歪みを少なくすることができる。
 上述したように、本実施形態では、周辺表示領域125内の画素に供給される表示信号が圧縮されている。表示信号の圧縮は、例えばソフトウェアで実現される。画像を圧縮する他の方法としては、例えば周辺表示領域125内の画素の間隔を第1の方向D1または第2の方向D2に変化させる方法がある。周辺表示領域125内の画素の間隔を中央表示領域124内の画素の間隔より狭くし、信号処理を行なうことなく圧縮画像を形成する方法である。この方法は特別な信号処理が不要であるものの、予め専用の表示パネルを製造する必要がある、汎用性に劣る、また、コストが掛かる、等の問題がある。本実施形態の表示装置では、表示領域120全体に亘って画素を等間隔に配列するため、上記の問題がない簡易な構造であるという利点を有する。
 第1周辺表示部分121に形成される画像は、2方向に圧縮される必要がある。画像を2方向に圧縮する方法として、画素を等間隔に配列し、表示信号を第1の方向D1および第2の方向D2に異なる圧縮比で圧縮し、第1周辺表示部分121に圧縮された画像を形成する方法もある。液晶表示装置100aでは、第1レンズ体211の形状が回転体の一部であり、画像を第1の方向D1および第2の方向D2に均一に拡大するよう設計されているので、表示信号も第1の方向D1および第2の方向D2に一定の圧縮率で圧縮すればよく、信号処理を簡単に行なえるという利点を有する。
 続いて、輝度の均一化について説明する。液晶表示装置100aから出射される光のうち、周辺表示領域125内の画素から出射された光はレンズ部210によって拡大されるので、その拡大率(1/a)に応じて輝度が低下する。従って、レンズ部210上に表示される画像と平板部250上に表示される画像との間に輝度差が発生する。
 このような輝度差は、レンズ部210に入射する光の輝度を平板部250に入射する光の輝度よりも相対的に高めることにより改善できる。このことは、周辺表示領域125から出射される光の輝度を、中央表示領域124から出射される光の輝度よりも相対的に高めることで実現される。
 ここで例示した液晶表示装置100aの場合には、以下の2つの方法が考えられる。
  方法a:中央表示領域124内の画素の透過率を下げる。
  方法b:周辺表示領域125内の画素から出射される光の輝度を中央表示領域124内の画素から出射される光の輝度よりも高くする。
 方法aは、画素に供給する電圧を調整することによって容易に実現できる。方法bは、例えば、バックライト装置15として冷陰極管が配列されている場合、周辺表示領域125に対応して配置された冷陰極管群を他の冷陰極管(中央表示領域124に対応して配置された冷陰極管)よりも明るく点灯させればよい。また、バックライト装置15として、発光ダイオード(LED)が並べて配置されている場合でも同様の方法で実現できる。もちろん上記の方法aおよびbを組み合わせて、輝度の均一化を行ってもよい。
 また、表示パネルが、プラズマ表示パネル(PDP)や有機EL表示パネル(OLED)のような自発光型の表示パネルである場合には、平板部250に入射する光を出す画素の輝度を相対的に小さくすればよい。
 次に、複数の液晶表示装置100aをタイリングして得られる大画面の表示装置の他の形態を例示する。図4では、液晶表示装置100aを2方向にタイリングした表示装置を示したが、本実施形態の液晶表示装置100aは、第1の方向D1または第2の方向D2のいずれか一方向にタイリングしてもよい。一方向に液晶表示装置100aをタイリングして得られる表示装置においても、継ぎ目が無い表示を行うことができる。液晶表示パネル100を例えば第1の方向D1に互いに隣接するように配置し、透光性カバー200を第1の方向D1に互いに隣接するように配列する場合、互いに隣接する液晶表示装置100aの透光性カバー200の第3レンズ体213が隣接するように配置すると、継ぎ目が無い表示を行うことができる。また、図18に示す液晶表示装置100Bのように、液晶表示パネル100aを180度未満の角度θを設けて配列しても良い。このことにより、継ぎ目が見え難い曲面型の表示装置が実現される。なお、角度θは、互いに隣接する2つの液晶表示装置100aの透光性カバー200の観察者側表面のなす角である。もちろん、液晶表示パネル100を第2の方向D2に互いに隣接するように配置してもよい。
 本実施形態では表示パネルとして、矩形の液晶表示パネル100を用いる場合を例示したが、矩形ではない表示パネルにも本発明を適用することができる。また、矩形ではない表示パネルをタイリングする場合にも本発明を適用することができる。また、本実施形態では液晶表示パネルを用いたが、本発明の表示パネルは液晶表示パネルに限られない。また、バックライト装置を有しない自発光型の表示装置にも適用可能である。
 また、上記においては、4辺全てレンズ形状とした透光性カバー200を示したが、3辺または2辺をレンズ形状としても、角部をレンズ形状とする必要がある場合には、本発明を適用できる。
 また、本実施形態では、透光性カバー200をアクリル樹脂で作製したが、もちろんこれに限られるものではなく、ポリカーボネート等の透明樹脂やガラスなど、透光性の材料であれば用いることができる。
 また、透光性カバー200と液晶表示パネル100を固定する方法は、見栄えを損なわない範囲でどのような固定方法でもよい。例えば、液晶表示パネル100の側面と透光性カバー200の側面とを粘着シートで固定してもよい。また、液晶表示パネル100の額縁上に両面粘着シートを貼って、透光性カバー200を固定しても良い。最も見栄えが良くなる方法は、屈折率が、透光性カバー200の材料の屈折率と液晶表示パネル100の最表面に配置される部材(たとえば偏光板)の材料の屈折率(通常は1.5前後)に近く、透光性の高い、例えば両面粘着シートやシリコーンゲル、液状接着剤などによって、空気層が入り込まないように液晶表示パネル100と透光性カバー200を貼り合わせる方法である。このとき用いられる両面粘着シート等の屈折率と、透光性カバーの屈折率との差は、0.1以内であることが好ましい。この方法によると、液晶表示パネル100の観察者側の最表面と、透光性カバー200の液晶表示パネル100側の表面との間において、界面反射が約0.1%以下に抑制されるので、表示品位が良好になる。
 次に、平板部250の他の形態を、図19を参照して説明する。図19は透光性カバー200’の斜視図である。図19に示す透光性カバー200’は、平板部250の厚さがレンズ部210の厚さより小さい。透光性カバー200’は、図11を参照して示した透光性カバー200に比べ薄型化および軽量化されるという利点を有する。
 また、本実施形態の透光性カバー200のレンズ部210は、観察者側に曲面を有するものを示したが、レンズ部210の曲面はこれに限られない。レンズ部210は観察者側と反対側に曲面を有しても良いし、観察者側と、観察者側と反対側との両側に曲面を有してもよい。レンズ部の表裏両面が曲面であると、レンズ部に入射する光は、2回屈折されて出射される。従って、片面のみ屈曲している場合に比べ、透光性カバーを薄型化および軽量化することができるという利点を有する。また、レンズ部が観察者側と反対側にのみ曲面を有する場合、すなわち、レンズ部の観察者側表面が平坦面であり、レンズ部の背面側表面が曲面である場合には、観察者側表面に付着した埃や汚れ等をふき取りやすいという利点を有する。
 上述してきたように、本発明によると、複数の表示装置を2方向にタイリングした場合にも継ぎ目が無い画像を表示することができる直視型の表示装置を提供することができる。
 本発明は、テレビや情報表示用の表示装置として好適に用いられる。

Claims (12)

  1.  複数の画素が行方向および列方向にマトリクス状に配列された表示領域と、前記表示領域の外側に設けられた額縁領域とを有し、前記表示領域と前記額縁領域との間に、前記行方向に延びる第1境界線と、前記第1境界線と交差し前記列方向に延びる第2境界線とが存在する少なくとも1つの表示パネルと、
     前記少なくとも1つの表示パネルの観察者側に配置された少なくとも1つの透光性カバーとを備え、
     前記表示領域は、前記額縁領域に隣接する周辺表示領域と、前記周辺表示領域以外の領域の中央表示領域から構成され、
     前記周辺表示領域と前記中央表示領域との間には、前記行方向に延びる第3境界線と、前記第3境界線と交差し前記列方向に延びる第4境界線が存在し、
     前記周辺表示領域は、前記第3境界線と前記第4境界線とが交差する点を通り前記第1境界線に直交する直線と、前記交差する点を通り前記第2境界線に直交する直線と、前記第1境界線と、前記第2境界線とで囲まれた第1周辺表示部分を有し、
     前記少なくとも1つの透光性カバーは、前記周辺表示領域および前記額縁領域の上に配置されたレンズ部を有し、前記レンズ部は、前記第1周辺表示部分内の少なくとも1つの画素から出射された光を、前記交差する点から前記少なくとも1つの画素に向かう方向に屈折させる、直視型の表示装置。
  2.  前記額縁領域は、前記交差する点を通り前記第1境界線に直交する直線と、前記交差する点を通り前記第2境界線に直交する直線と、前記第1境界線と、前記第2境界線と、前記額縁領域の外縁とに囲まれた第1額縁部分を有し、
     前記レンズ部は、前記第1周辺表示部分および前記第1額縁部分の上に配置された第1レンズ体を有し、
     前記第1レンズ体は、回転体を、回転軸を含む2つの平面で切り取って得られる立体の一部分であり、前記回転軸は、前記交差する点を通り、前記第3境界線と前記第4境界線とに垂直となるように配置されている、請求項1に記載の表示装置。
  3.  前記第1レンズ体は、前記第1周辺表示部分内の複数の画素のうち、前記交差する点と前記少なくとも1つの画素とを通る直線上にある複数の画素から出射された光が、前記第1レンズ体の観察者側表面から出射される位置の間隔を略等しくするように前記光を屈折させる、請求項1または2に記載の表示装置。
  4.  前記交差する点および前記少なくとも1つの画素を通り、前記少なくとも1つの表示パネルの表示面に垂直な平面と、前記第1レンズ体の表面との交線は、非球面関数によって規定される曲線である、請求項3に記載の表示装置。
  5.  前記表示領域において、前記複数の画素は、前記行方向および前記列方向に等間隔に配列されており、
     前記少なくとも1つの画素に供給される表示信号は、前記中央表示領域内の画素に供給される表示信号と比較して、前記交差する点を通り前記第1境界線に垂直な方向、および前記交差する点を通り前記第2境界線に垂直な方向に一様に圧縮されている、請求項3または4に記載の表示装置。
  6.  前記周辺表示領域は、
     前記第1周辺表示部分と、前記第1境界線と、前記第3境界線とに隣接する第2周辺表示部分と、
     前記第1周辺表示部分と、前記第2境界線と、前記第4境界線とに隣接する第3周辺表示部分とをさらに有し、
     前記額縁領域は、前記第1額縁部分と前記第1境界線とに隣接する第2額縁部分と、前記第1額縁部分と前記第2境界線とに隣接する第3額縁部分とをさらに有し、
     前記レンズ部は、前記第2周辺表示部分および前記第2額縁部分の上に配置された第2レンズ体と、前記第3周辺表示部分および前記第3額縁部分の上に配置された第3レンズ体をさらに有し、
     前記第2レンズ体は、前記第2周辺表示部分内の複数の画素から出射された光を前記第2周辺表示部分から前記第2額縁部分に向かう方向に屈折させ、
     前記第3レンズ体は、前記第3周辺表示部分内の複数の画素から出射された光を前記第3周辺表示部分から第3額縁部分に向かう方向に屈折させる、請求項2から5のいずれかに記載の表示装置。
  7.  前記第2レンズ体は、前記第2周辺表示部分内の複数の画素から出射された光の、前記第2レンズ体の観察者側表面から出射される位置の間隔を略等しくするように、前記光を屈折させ、
     前記第3レンズ体は、前記第3周辺表示部分内の複数の画素から出射された光の、前記第3レンズ体の観察者側表面から出射される位置の間隔を略等しくするように、前記光を屈折させる、請求項6に記載の表示装置。
  8.  前記第2レンズ体の表面と前記第1境界線に垂直な平面との交線、および前記第3レンズ体の表面と前記第2境界線に垂直な平面との交線は、前記第1レンズ体の表面と前記少なくとも1つの表示パネルの表示面に垂直な平面との交線と同じ関数で規定される曲線である、請求項7に記載の表示装置。
  9.  前記少なくとも1つの透光性カバーは、前記レンズ部以外の部分に、観察者側表面が前記少なくとも1つの表示パネルの表示面と略平行な面で形成される平板部をさらに有し、
     前記平板部の厚さは前記レンズ部の厚さより小さい、請求項2から8のいずれかに記載の表示装置。
  10.  前記少なくとも1つの表示パネルは、前記行方向に互いに隣接するように配置された2つ以上の表示パネルを含み、
     前記少なくとも1つの透光性カバーは、前記行方向に互いに隣接するように配列された2つ以上の透光性カバーを含み、
     前記2つ以上の透光性カバーの前記第3レンズ体は、前記行方向に互いに隣接する、請求項6から9のいずれかに記載の表示装置。
  11.  前記少なくとも1つの表示パネルは、前記行方向および前記列方向に互いに隣接する4つ以上の表示パネルを含み、
     前記少なくとも1つの透光性カバーは、前記行方向および前記列方向に互いに隣接する4つ以上の透光性カバーを含み、
     前記4つ以上の透光性カバーの前記第1レンズ体は互いに隣接する、請求項6から9のいずれかに記載の表示装置。
  12.  前記2つ以上の表示パネルは、前記行方向に互いに隣接する表示面の角度が180°未満の角度に設定されている、請求項10に記載の表示装置。
