Abstract

アルコール濃度測定方法、アルコール濃度測定装置、および当該装置を 含む燃料電池システム 技術分野
[0001] 本発明は、アルコール濃度測定方法、アルコール濃度測定装置および当該装置を 含む燃料電池システムに関する。
背景技術
[0002] 燃料電池は、燃料極および酸化剤極と、これらの間に設けられた電解質から構成さ れ、燃料極には燃料が、酸化剤極には酸化剤が供給されて電気化学反応により発 電する。燃料としては、一般的には水素が用いられる力 近年、安価で取り扱いの容 易なメタノール等のアルコールを燃料として直接利用する直接型の燃料電池の開発 も盛んに行われている。

[0006] 特に、直接型の燃料電池では、アルコール水溶液から水素イオンを得ることができ るので、改質器等が不要になり、小型化および軽量ィ匕を図ることができる。また、液体 のアルコール水溶液を燃料とするため、エネルギー密度が非常に高いという特徴が ある。
[0007] しかし、直接型の燃料電池では、発電状況により、燃料中のアルコール濃度が変化 してしまう。燃料電池の電力を安定的に保っためには、燃料中のアルコール濃度を 適正な範囲に保つ必要がある。そのため、燃料電池システムには、燃料中のアルコ ール濃度を検出する装置が要求される。
[0008] たとえば、特許文献 1には、液体中のアルコール濃度を測定するセンサが開示され ている。このセンサは、電極の間にポリチォフェン系の導電性ポリマー被覆が設けら れ、アルコール濃度に応じて抵抗が変化するように構成されている。
[0009] また、特許文献 2および 3には、電解質膜を挟持したアノードと力ソードを含む(特許 文献 2の図 15、特許文献 3の図 6参照)、燃料電池様のセルを用いて液体中のメタノ ール濃度を測定するセンサが開示されている。このセルにおいて、アノードしては Pt 一 Ru、力ソードとしては Pt等の触媒電極が用いられる。このように構成されたセルのァ ノード一力ソード間に定電圧を印加することにより、アノードにおいてメタノールが二酸 化炭素に変換され、力ソードにおいてプロトンが水素に変換される反応が起こり、ァノ 一ドー力ソード間に電流が流れる。この電流値を測定することにより、液体中のメタノ ール濃度が測定される。

[0011] しかし、上記特許文献 1に示された構成のセンサは、たとえばへキサンやガソリン等 の良溶媒中に置かれた場合とメタノールや水などの貧溶媒中に置かれた場合とで側 鎖のコンフオメーシヨンが異なることを利用して液体中のアルコール濃度を検出して いる。そのため、貧溶媒であるアルコール水溶液中のアルコール濃度を精度よく検出 するのは困難である。
[0012] また、上記特許文献 2および特許文献 3に開示された構成のセンサの場合、メタノ ール濃度測定用に燃料電池様のセルを準備する必要があり、アノードおよびカソー ドとして高価な Pt等の触媒金属を利用する必要がある。また、力ソードにおいて水素 ガスが発生するため、水素ガスを除去する必要もある。
[0013] 本発明は上記事情に鑑みなされたものであり、本発明の目的は、簡易な構造でァ ルコール濃度を検出することが可能なアルコール濃度測定装置および当該装置を 含む燃料電池システム、およびアルコール濃度測定方法を提供することにある。
[0014] 本発明によれば、アルコールを含む液体燃料を利用する燃料電池システムであつ て、固体高分子電解質膜と、該固体高分子電解質膜に配された燃料極および酸化 剤極とを含む燃料電池本体と、液体燃料を含む容器と、プロトン伝導性を有し、容器 内または容器の壁部に設けられた高分子膜と、液体燃料を高分子膜に含浸させたと きの高分子膜のプロトン伝導度の変化に基づき、容器中の液体燃料のアルコール濃 度を検出する濃度検出部と、を含むことを特徴とする燃料電池システムが適用される
[0015] ここで、燃料電池本体は、燃料極に液体燃料を直接供給する直接型のものであつ てもよぐまた液体燃料を改質して燃料として水素を利用するものであってもいずれ でもよレ、。液体燃料を含む容器は、燃料電池本体の燃料極に設けられた燃料極タン ク、燃料極タンクに供給する燃料を収容するバッファタンク、カートリッジ、またはこれ らを結ぶ配管を含み、高分子膜が液体燃料を含浸可能であれば、どのような構成と することちでさる。
[0016] 高分子膜は、容器中の液体燃料を含浸するように構成され、液体燃料のアルコー ル濃度に応じてプロトン伝導度が変化する材料により構成することができる。高分子 膜としては、プロトン酸基を含む材料を用いることができる。
[0017] 本発明の燃料電池システムによれば、簡易な構成で液体燃料のアルコール濃度を 検出することができる。本発明の燃料電池システムによれば、高分子膜のプロトン伝 導度の変化に基づき液体燃料のアルコール濃度を検出するので、貧溶媒であるァ ルコール水溶液中においても、アルコール濃度を精度よく検出することができる。
[0018] 本発明の燃料電池システムにおいて、濃度検出部は、高分子膜に配設された一対 の電極端子と、電極端子間の抵抗値を測定する抵抗測定部と、抵抗測定部が測定 した抵抗値に基づき液体燃料のアルコール濃度を算出する濃度算出部と、を含むこ とができる。
[0019] ここで、高分子膜は、アルコール濃度に応じてプロトン伝導度が変化する材料によ り構成されるので、電極端子間に高分子膜を介して電流を流した場合、液体燃料の アルコール濃度に応じて電極端子間の抵抗値が変化する。濃度検出部は、電極端 子間の抵抗値とアルコール濃度との対応関係を示す参照データを保持することがで き、濃度算出部は、参照データに基づき、液体燃料のアルコール濃度を算出するこ とができる。 [0020] ここで、濃度検出部は三以上の電極端子を含むこともでき、たとえば四つの電極端 子を含むこともできる。この場合、一方の一対の電極端子を電流測定用とすることが でき、他方の一対の電極端子を電圧測定用とすることができる。電極端子は、高分子 膜表面に設けることもできるが、高分子膜中に設けてもよい。また、電極端子は、液体 燃料中に設けることもできるが、液体燃料に直接接しない構成とすることもできる。電 極端子を液体燃料に直接接しない構成とすることにより、電極端子が液体燃料により 腐食等されるのを防ぐことができる。これにより、電極端子を安定に保つことができる。 電極端子は、導電性を有するものであれば、どのような材料により構成することもでき る。電極端子は、たとえば、金、銀、白金、アルミニウム、ステンレス等により構成する こと力 sできる。
[0021] 本発明によれば、上記特許文献 2および特許文献 3に開示された構成のセンサの ように触媒電極を用いる必要がないため、簡易な工程で濃度検出部を製造すること ができる。また、濃度検出部において、触媒金属を用いる必要がないため、燃料電池 システムを安価に製造することができる。さらに、上記特許文献 2および特許文献 3に 開示された構成のセンサにおいては、電極反応の出力に基づき液体燃料のアルコ ール濃度を検出しているが、本発明の燃料電池システムにおいては、高分子膜を流 れる電流の抵抗値を測定するだけなので、酸化剤極において水素ガスも発生せず、 構成を簡便にすることができる。さらに、上記特許文献 2および特許文献 3において は、電極反応の出力に基づき液体燃料のアルコール濃度を検出しているため、触媒 電極が劣化することにより電極反応の出力が変動してアルコール濃度を正確に測定 できない可能性もある。本発明の燃料電池システムにおいては、触媒反応を利用し ないため、このような触媒の劣化による問題も生じない。
[0022] 本発明の燃料電池システムにおいて、濃度検出部において、電極端子は、容器外 部に設けることができる。また、濃度検出部は、電極端子を覆う疎水性膜を有すること ができる。
[0023] 本発明の燃料電池システムにおいて、固体高分子電解質膜の一部を上記高分子 膜として利用することができる。この場合、固体電解質膜において、触媒層が設けら れていない領域に電極端子を設けることができる。 [0024] 本発明の燃料電池システムは、容器中の液体燃料とはアルコール濃度が異なる液 体燃料を収容する異濃度燃料収容部と、異濃度燃料収容部から容器に液体燃料を 供給する供給部と、濃度検出部が検出した容器中の液体燃料のアルコール濃度に 応じて、供給部が供給する液体燃料の供給量を調整する制御部と、をさらに含むこと ができる。異濃度燃料収容部に含まれる液体燃料は、容器中の液体燃料よりも濃度 が高くても低くてもどちらでもよい。本発明の燃料電池システムは、複数の異濃度燃 料収容部を含むことができる。また、異濃度燃料収容部は、アルコールを含まない水 を含むこともできる。この場合、液体燃料を燃料電池本体に供給した後に燃料極で 生じる水を異濃度燃料収容部に回収し、循環させる構成とすることもできる。本発明 の燃料電池システムによれば、容器中の液体燃料の濃度変化を検出して、アルコー ル濃度が適切な液体燃料を燃料電池本体に供給することができる。

アクリルアミドー 2—メチルプロパンスルフォン酸のようなアクリルアミド類と n—ブチルメタ タリレートのようなアタリレート類とを共重合させて得られる共重合体;

高分子膜 694としてナフイオン Ni l 7膜(デュポン社製、厚さ約 50 z m、幅約 5mm 、長さ約 60mm)を用レ、、高分子膜 694の表面にストレインゲージを貼付し、センサ 6 98を準備した。容器内に濃度が既知のメタノール水溶液 (メタノール濃度 0%、 20% 、 40%、および 60%)を導入し、ブリッジを備えた直流ソースメーターを用いてストレ インゲージの電極間の抵抗値を測定した。表 1に、メタノール水溶液中のメタノール 濃度と抵抗値の変化率との関係を示す。このように、高分子膜 694の歪みを検出す ることにより、精度よくアルコール濃度を検出することができた。

Claims

請求の範囲
[1] アルコールを含む液体燃料を利用する燃料電池システムであって、
固体高分子電解質膜と、該固体高分子電解質膜に配された燃料極および酸化剤 極とを含む燃料電池本体と、
前記液体燃料を含む容器と、
プロトン伝導性を有し、前記容器内または前記容器の壁部に設けられた高分子膜 と、
前記液体燃料を前記高分子膜に含浸させたときの前記高分子膜のプロトン伝導度 の変化に基づき、前記容器中の前記液体燃料のアルコール濃度を検出する濃度検 出部と、
を含むことを特徴とする燃料電池システム。
[2] 請求の範囲第 1項に記載の燃料電池システムにおいて、
前記濃度検出部は、前記高分子膜に配設された一対の電極端子と、前記電極端 子間の抵抗値を測定する抵抗測定部と、前記抵抗測定部が測定した抵抗値に基づ き前記液体燃料のアルコール濃度を算出する濃度算出部と、を含むことを特徴とす る燃料電池システム。
[3] 請求の範囲第 2項に記載の燃料電池システムにおいて、
前記濃度検出部において、前記電極端子は、前記容器外部に設けられたことを特 徴とする燃料電池システム。
[4] 請求の範囲第 2項または第 3項に記載の燃料電池システムにおいて、
前記濃度検出部は、前記電極端子を覆う疎水性膜を有することを特徴とする燃料 電池システム。
[5] 請求の範囲第 1項乃至第 4項いずれかに記載の燃料電池システムにおいて、 前記固体高分子電解質膜の一部が前記高分子膜として利用されることを特徴とす る燃料電池システム。
[6] 請求の範囲第 1項乃至第 5項いずれかに記載の燃料電池システムにおいて、 温度または pHに対するプロトン伝導度が異なる複数の高分子膜を含み、 前記濃度検出部は、前記複数の高分子膜それぞれのプロトン伝導度の変化に基 づき、前記容器中の前記液体燃料の温度又は pHを考慮して、前記液体燃料のアル コール濃度を検出することを特徴とする燃料電池システム。
[7] 請求の範囲第 1項乃至第 6項いずれかに記載の燃料電池システムにおいて、 前記高分子膜は、プロトン酸基を含むことを特徴とする燃料電池システム。
[8] アルコールを含む液体燃料を利用する燃料電池システムであって、
固体高分子電解質膜と、該固体高分子電解質膜に配された燃料極および酸化剤 極とを含む燃料電池本体と、
前記液体燃料を含む容器と、
前記容器内または前記容器の壁部に設けられ、前記液体燃料を含浸して前記液 体燃料中のアルコールの濃度に応じて寸法変化する高分子膜と、
前記高分子膜の寸法変化の度合いを検出し、その寸法変化の度合いに基づき前 記容器中の前記液体燃料のアルコール濃度を検出する濃度検出部と、
を含むことを特徴とする燃料電池システム。
[9] 請求の範囲第 8項に記載の燃料電池システムにおいて、
前記濃度検出部は、前記高分子膜に配設されたストレインゲージと、前記ストレイン ゲージの抵抗変化を検出する抵抗測定部と、前記抵抗測定部が測定した抵抗の変 化を前記液体燃料のアルコール濃度に変換する濃度算出部と、を含むことを特徴と する燃料電池システム。
[10] 請求の範囲第 8項または第 9項に記載の燃料電池システムにおいて、
前記固体高分子電解質膜の一部が前記高分子膜として利用されることを特徴とす る燃料電池システム。
[11] 請求の範囲第 8項に記載の燃料電池システムにおいて、
前記濃度検出部は、前記高分子膜を挟んで構成されたコンデンサと、前記コンデ ンサの電気容量を測定する電気容量測定部と、前記電気容量測定部が測定した電 気容量の変化に基づき前記高分子膜の寸法変化を検出し、当該寸法変化の度合い を前記液体燃料のアルコール濃度に変換する濃度算出部と、を含むことを特徴とす る燃料電池システム。
[12] 請求の範囲第 8項に記載の燃料電池システムにおいて、 前記濃度検出部は、前記高分子膜に配設された水晶振動子と、当該水晶振動子 の共振周波数の変化を検出する共振周波数特性測定部と、前記共振周波数特性測 定部が測定した共振周波数特性に基づき、前記液体燃料のアルコール濃度に変換 する濃度算出部と、を含むことを特徴とする燃料電池システム。
[13] 請求の範囲第 8項乃至第 12項いずれかに記載の燃料電池システムにおいて、 前記高分子膜は、プロトン酸基を含むことを特徴とする燃料電池システム。
[14] 請求の範囲第 6項乃至第 13項いずれかに記載の燃料電池システムにおいて、 温度または pHに対する寸法変化の度合いが異なる複数の高分子膜を含み、 前記濃度検出部は、前記複数の高分子膜それぞれの寸法変化の度合いに基づき 、前記容器中の前記液体燃料の温度又は pHを考慮して、前記液体燃料のアルコー ル濃度を検出することを特徴とする燃料電池システム。
[15] 請求の範囲第 1項乃至第 14項いずれかに記載の燃料電池システムにおいて、 前記高分子膜は、架橋されたことを特徴とする燃料電池システム。
[16] 請求の範囲第 1項乃至第 15項いずれかに記載の燃料電池システムにおいて、 前記燃料電池本体に取り外し可能に構成されたカートリッジをさらに含み、 前記容器は、前記カートリッジに設けられたことを特徴とする燃料電池システム。
[17] 請求の範囲第 1項乃至第 16項いずれかに記載の燃料電池システムにおいて、 燃料注入口を有し、前記燃料極に前記液体燃料を供給する燃料極タンクと、 前記燃料極タンクの前記燃料注入口と嵌合する嵌合部を有し、前記燃料極タンク に取り外し可能に構成されたカートリッジと、
をさらに含み、
前記容器は、前記カートリッジに設けられたことを特徴とする燃料電池システム。
[18] 請求の範囲第 1項乃至第 17項いずれかに記載の燃料電池システムにおいて、 前記容器中の液体燃料とはアルコール濃度が異なる液体燃料を収容する異濃度 燃料収容部と、
前記異濃度燃料収容部から前記容器に液体燃料を供給する供給部と、 前記濃度検出部が検出した前記容器中の前記液体燃料のアルコール濃度に応じ て、前記供給部が供給する前記液体燃料の供給量を調整する制御部と、 をさらに含むことを特徴とする燃料電池システム。
[19] 請求の範囲第 18項に記載の燃料電池システムにおいて、
燃料注入口を有し、前記燃料電池本体に前記液体燃料を供給する燃料極タンクを さらに含み、
前記容器は、前記燃料極タンクの前記燃料注入口と嵌合する嵌合部と、前記供給 部と接続する第一の接続部を有し、前記燃料極タンクおよび前記供給部に取り外し 可能に構成され、
前記異濃度燃料収容部は、前記供給部と接続する第二の接続部を有し、前記供 給部に取り外し可能に構成されたことを特徴とする燃料電池システム。
[20] 請求の範囲第 19項に記載の燃料電池システムにおいて、
前記容器および前記異濃度燃料収容部は、一体に形成されたことを特徴とする燃 料電池システム。
[21] 請求の範囲第 1項乃至第 20項いずれかに記載の燃料電池システムにおいて、 前記容器中の前記液体燃料の温度を測定する温度センサをさらに含み、 前記濃度検出部は、前記温度センサが測定した温度に応じて前記容器中の前記 液体燃料のアルコール濃度を補正することを特徴とする燃料電池システム。
[22] 請求の範囲第 1項乃至第 21項いずれかに記載の燃料電池システムにおいて、 前記容器中の前記液体燃料の pHを測定する pH測定部をさらに含み、 前記濃度検出部は、前記 pH測定部が測定した pHに応じて前記容器中の前記液 体燃料のアルコール濃度を補正することを特徴とする燃料電池システム。
[23] 請求の範囲第 1項乃至第 22項いずれかに記載の燃料電池システムにおいて、 警告を提示する警告提示部と、
前記濃度検出部が検出した前記容器中の前記液体燃料のアルコール濃度が所定 の範囲外になつた場合に、前記警告提示部に警告の提示を指示する制御部と、 をさらに含むことを特徴とする燃料電池システム。
[24] アルコール濃度の測定装置であって、
プロトン伝導性を有し、アルコールを含む液体を含浸した際に当該液体中のアルコ ール濃度に応じてプロトン伝導度が変化する高分子膜と、 前記高分子膜のプロトン伝導度の変化に基づき、前記液体中のアルコール濃度を 検出する濃度検出部と、
を含むことを特徴とするアルコール濃度測定装置。
[25] 請求の範囲第 24項に記載のアルコール濃度測定装置において、
前記濃度検出部は、前記高分子膜に配設された一対の電極端子と、前記電極端 子間の抵抗値を測定する抵抗測定部と、前記抵抗測定部が測定した抵抗値を前記 液体中のアルコール濃度に変換する濃度算出部と、を含むことを特徴とするアルコ ール濃度測定装置。
[26] アルコール濃度の測定装置であって、
アルコールを含む液体を含浸した際に、当該液体中のアルコール濃度に応じて寸 法変化する高分子膜と、
前記高分子膜の寸法変化の度合いを検出し、その寸法変化の度合いに基づき前 記液体のアルコール濃度を検出する濃度検出部と、
を含むことを特徴とするアルコール濃度測定装置。
[27] 請求の範囲第 26項に記載のアルコール濃度測定装置において、
前記濃度検出部は、前記高分子膜に配設されたストレインゲージと、前記ストレイン ゲージの抵抗変化を検出する抵抗測定部と、前記抵抗測定部が測定した抵抗の変 化を前記液体燃料のアルコール濃度に変換する濃度算出部と、を含むことを特徴と するアルコール濃度測定装置。
[28] アルコール濃度の測定方法であって、
測定対象のアルコールを含む液体をプロトン伝導性を有する高分子膜に含浸させ る工程と、
前記高分子膜のプロトン伝導度の変化を検出する工程と、
前記プロトン伝導度の変化に基づき、前記液体中のアルコール濃度を検出するェ 程と、
を含むことを特徴とするアルコール濃度測定方法。
[29] 請求の範囲第 28項に記載のアルコール濃度測定方法において、
前記プロトン伝導度の変化を検出する工程は、前記高分子膜に配設された一対の 電極端子間の抵抗値を測定する工程を含み、
前記アルコールの濃度を検出する工程は、前記抵抗値に基づき前記液体のアルコ ール濃度を算出する工程を含むことを特徴とするアルコール濃度測定方法。
[30] 請求の範囲第 28項または第 29項に記載のアルコール濃度測定方法において、 前記高分子膜のプロトン伝導度の変化を検出する工程の前に、前記液体を二酸化 炭素ガスで飽和させる工程をさらに含むことを特徴とするアルコール濃度測定方法。
[31] アルコール濃度の測定方法であって、
測定対象のアルコールを含む液体を当該液体を含浸することにより寸法変化する 高分子膜に含浸させる工程と、
前記高分子膜の寸法変化を検出する工程と、
前記高分子膜の寸法変化の度合いに基づき、前記液体中のアルコール濃度を検 出する工程と、
を含むことを特徴とするアルコール濃度測定方法。
[32] 請求の範囲第 31項に記載のアルコール濃度測定方法において、
前記寸法変化を検出する工程は、前記高分子膜に配設されたストレインゲージの 抵抗変化を測定する工程を含み、
前記アルコール濃度を検出する工程は、前記抵抗変化を測定する工程において 測定された抵抗の変化を前記液体中のアルコール濃度に変換する工程を含むことを 特徴とするアルコール濃度測定方法。
[33] 請求の範囲第 31項に記載のアルコール濃度測定方法において、
前記寸法変化を検出する工程は、前記高分子膜を挟んで構成されたコンデンサの 電気容量を測定する工程を含み、
前記アルコール濃度を検出する工程は、前記電気容量を測定する工程において 測定された電気容量の変化に基づき前記高分子膜の寸法変化を検出する工程と、 当該寸法変化の度合いを前記液体燃料のアルコール濃度に変換する工程とを含む ことを特徴とするアルコール濃度測定方法。
[34] 請求の範囲第 31項に記載のアルコール濃度測定方法において、
前記寸法変化を検出する工程は、前記高分子膜に配設された水晶振動子の共振 周波数の変化を測定する工程を含み、
前記アルコール濃度を検出する工程は、前記共振周波数の変化を測定する工程 において測定された共振周波数の変化に基づき前記高分子膜の寸法変化を検出す る工程と、当該寸法変化の度合いを前記液体燃料のアルコール濃度に変換するェ 程とを含むことを特徴とするアルコール濃度測定方法。
[35] 燃料電池本体と、第一の電極端子および第二の電極端子と、前記第一の電極端 子および第二の電極端子間に電圧を印加する電圧印加手段と、を含む燃料電池シ ステムに取り外し可能に構成され、前記燃料電池本体に供給する液体燃料を収容す る燃料収容容器であって、
プロトン伝導性を有する高分子膜と、
前記高分子膜に配設され、前記第一の電極端子および第二の電極端子とそれぞ れ電気的に接続される第三の電極端子および第四の電極端子と、
を含むことを特徴とする燃料収容容器。
[36] 燃料電池本体と、第一の電極端子および第二の電極端子と、前記第一の電極端 子および第二の電極端子間に電圧を印加する電圧印加手段と、を含む燃料電池シ ステムに取り外し可能に構成され、前記燃料電池本体に供給する液体燃料を収容す る燃料収容容器であって、
アルコールを含む液体を含浸することにより寸法変化する高分子膜と、 前記高分子膜に配設されたストレインゲージと、
前記第一の電極端子および第二の電極端子とそれぞれ電気的に接続され、前記 ストレインゲージの抵抗変化を取り出す第三の電極端子および第四の電極端子と、 を含むことを特徴とする燃料収容容器。
