Definitions
- the invention relates to a firing pin, in particular for a machine gun, with an elongated, essentially cylindrical firing pin barrel, a stop formation and a tip (preamble of claim 1).
- the firing pin penetrates a hole in the butt plate of the lock or lock head e.g. a machine gun and has the task of hitting the cartridge with such force that it detonates reliably.
- the firing pin was usually designed in such a way that it tapers in a bottle-shaped or conical shape towards the front and ends in a very slender tip that penetrates a hole in the bump bottom with little play. Because of the small diameter of the tip, a high surface pressure is achieved on the primer and therefore a reliable ignition is expected even with a small impact on the firing pin. In addition, it has been hoped that a bore in the bottom plate with a small diameter has the advantage that the so-called "capsule tears" are prevented or at least made as rare as possible.
- the copper, tombac or brass sheet of the capsule bursts when it is shot , so that gas escapes into the breech at the back, and the sheet metal of the capsule can then get between the fired-back firing pin and the edge of the hole in the butt plate.
- Capsule tears frequently appeared in the first central fire cartridges at the end of the 19th century. With the choice of the capsule sheet one had little experience. In warehouses, cartridges with Berdan capsules may sometimes have larger pilot holes than necessary. Today, especially with boxer capsules, you hardly have to fear capsule tears because of too large ignition holes.
- the firing pin was replaced by a short pin with a triangular cross section, in which the air cushion effect could not occur due to the triangular shape. Moreover a replacement firing pin was attached to each weapon, so that a broken or bent firing pin could be quickly replaced if necessary. However, the shooter had very little of this if the disruption occurred in battle.
- the firing pin especially for machine guns.
- the firing pin even if it is of considerable length, should be unbreakable.
- a closure or closure head with a simplified bore should be possible.
- the known firing pin mentioned at the outset is further developed in such a way that the tip is designed as a flat crest, which directly adjoins the cylindrical shaft.
- the previously existing, slender tip, which is mostly offset from the firing pin shaft, is no longer required.
- the load on the capsule is therefore significantly lower. Furthermore, breaking off the slender tip of the firing pin is no longer possible because the firing pin according to the invention has no such slender tip. Likewise, there is no heat build-up in the tip of the firing pin at high temperatures. If the cartridges are overloaded, the capsule may not be retracted.
- the firing pin type is particularly suitable for a locking principle to be fired (lock locked in the rear position), since the firing pin forms a unit with the lock and the entire locking mass plus closing spring can act on the primer during ignition.
- Firing pin and associated hole in the lock are also easier and cheaper to manufacture. There is no danger of the firing pin being buffered by an air cushion if the bore is oily.
- the firing pin according to the invention is mechanically and thermally much more resilient than the known firing pin described at the outset and therefore has a significantly longer service life.
- the production of firing pin and location hole is easier and cheaper. Faults caused by pollution and ammunition errors practically no longer have an effect.
- at least one slightly thickened guide section is arranged along the shaft. The guide section acts as a support against transverse vibrations and like a piston ring, which ensures cleaning of the receiving bore.
- the flat tip cuts the or a guide section (claim 1). This gives the crest the largest possible radius, while on the other hand the shaft is not too thick and the firing pin is not too heavy. This results in a reduction in weight and quicker ignition.
- the diameter of the dome is almost the same as the diameter of the primer, possibly less the sheet thickness of the cylindrical primer border and the tolerances for the concentric arrangement of the cartridge chamber and bores.
- FIG. 1 shows schematically the front part of a breech head for a conventional machine gun
- FIG. 2 shows a firing pin according to the invention
- FIG. 3 shows the firing pin according to the invention installed in a breech head.
- a conventional breech head 1 of a machine gun is shown schematically in longitudinal section.
- This closure head 1 has a central axis 21 which is connected to the sea Len axis of the weapon is aligned.
- a central bore 5 is provided for receiving and guiding a firing pin 7, which opens into the butt plate 3.
- the opening end of the bore 5 has a constriction 9 which can only be produced with great effort. In particular, it is difficult to produce a bore 5 with a constriction 9 with a good surface quality.
- a firing pin 7 is movably arranged in this bore 5.
- This firing pin 7 has a tapered, slender tip 11 which is dimensioned such that it passes through the constriction 9 and can come out of it to a certain extent when the firing pin 7 is in its foremost position.
- the slim seats hit the cartridge's primer and ignite it. If you let the weapon hit without a cartridge, the firing pin 7 is held by a stop or by a compressed spring in the area of its left end, not shown here.
- the firing pin 17 according to the invention is shown in FIG. 2.
- the image scale is smaller than that of the closure head 1 of FIG. 1. This is cylindrical over most of its length and has slightly projecting guide sections 13 which guide it in its bore.
- the end has a thickening 15 which, optionally in cooperation with a firing pin spring, provides for a stop.
- the front end is not offset and slim, as in the known firing pin, but only equipped with a flat tip 19, which ensures reliable ignition of the primer of a cartridge. It preferably forms the end of a guide section 13.
- the firing pin requires a continuous, cylindrical bore in the breech head 1, which has no constriction 9 and can therefore be produced cheaply, quickly and with high accuracy, since it can easily be made to measure by rubbing.
- this firing pin is approximately 85 mm, the diameter in the region of the guide sections is 3 mm. This dimension is 2 to 3 times the usual firing pin tips 11. The formation of an air cushion is not to be feared, since any oil residues are pushed out of its bore by the firing pin 17. The same applies to dirt which may penetrate and which cannot collect at the constriction 9.
- Fig. 3 the firing pin 17 of Fig. 2 is shown, which is installed in the locking head 1 of Fig. 1.
