Zur Vergrößerung der aktiven Wischfläche ist man dazu übergegangen, den Bodenwischbelag flächenmäßig größer zu gestalten, als die Haltefläche des Spannrahmens, d.h. den Wischbelag entweder umlaufend oder teilweise seitlich über den äußeren Rand des Spannrahmens überstehen zu lassen. Die Reinigungswirkung eines derartigen Wischgerätes ist umso besser, je gleichmäßiger der Kontakt der Reinigungsseite des Wischbelags über seine gesamte aktive Fläche mit der zu reinigenden Oberfläche ist. Der Wischbelag sollte dazu bei der Reinigung von Boden- und Wandflächen jederzeit satt auf der zu reinigenden Oberfläche aufliegen und sich möglichst auch beim festeren Anpressen zur Entfernung von hartnäckigen Verunreinigungen nicht verwerfen oder durchbiegen. Während diese Anforderung im Bereich der glatt gespannten Haltefläche des Spannrahmens problemlos erfüllt wird, ist die erforderliche Stabilität in den nicht abgestützten, überstehenden Rand- bereichen des Bodenwischbelags größtenteils nicht gewährleistet. Im Stand der Technik ist ausweislich der EP 0 630 606 B1 zwar vorgeschlagen worden, eine Verstärkung aus kordel- oder drahtartigem Material in den Wischbelag einzuziehen. Zum einen hat der daraus bekannte Wischbelag immer noch nach außen vorstehende, unverstärkte Randbereiche, zum anderen sorgt eine derartige Verstärkung lediglich zur Erhöhung der Biegesteifigkeit der linienförmigen Außenkante, nicht jedoch der Fläche des überstehenden Bereiches quer zur Außenkante. Als alternative Maßnahme zur Verstärkung ist es aus der EP 0 664 1 00 A1 bekannt, die Ränder des Bodenwischbelags auf die Oberseite umzuschlagen und dort zu vernähen bzw. zu verkleben.
