Description
DGCUMENT NUMBER ;fl i l UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. ROBY, OF EAST CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS.
DESIGN FOR CAN DLESTICKS.
Specification forming part of Design No. 8,719` dated October 19, 1875; application filed September 30, 1875. [Term of Patent 3% years] To all whom it may concern: A
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. ROBY, o East Cambridge, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a Design for a Candlestick, of which the following is a specification:
The nature of my design is fully represented inthe aecompan yin g photographicillustration, which is a front elevation of a candlestick embodying my invention.
My design is especially intended for orna mentation of candlesticks cast or formed of glass, but is equally applicable to those formed of silver or other metal or composition of metals.
In the said photographic illustration, A denotes the base of the Candlestick, which is of a hexagonal shape. B is the shaft or body of the Candlestick, which is also of a hexagonal shape, and at its lower end terminates in an inverted hexagonal ovolo, C, resting upon the base A. a is the candle-receiving socket. Below the part a is an annular band or nllet, b, above which, and surrounding the part a, is an ornamental projection, c, terminating in four or other desirable number of curved leaves. e is another annular band or fillet, disposed on the shaft and a short distance above the ovolo C. Between the tillets b and @,and near the center of the shaft, is a medallion, D, representing a Madonna and Child, such medallion haxng an elliptical or curved border. Above the upper part of the border are a series of radiating prisms, g h, of alternating greater and less length, while the lower part of the medallion is embraced by an ornamental device, i, terminating a series of curved leaves, the base of such device resting` upon the lille-t e.
I would remark that I make no claim to any specific form of either the base or the shaft ofthe Candlestick, as they may have any that fancy may dictate, and the iillets b and e, as well as the ornamental device c, may be dispensed with altogether, or other suitable ornamentation he used in lieu thereof, the essential features of my invention being the medallion representillg the Madonna and Child, the curved or elliptical border j', having the series of radiating prisms g h of alternating greater and less length surmounting its upper portion, and the ornamental foliated device-i ankin g its lower portion.
What, therefore, I claim as my invention is- A design for a Candlestick, consisting of a medallion representing' a Madonna and Child, having a curved border, j', with its superior part surmounted by series of prisms g h of alternating greater and less length, and its inferior portion flanked by the ornamental foliated device z', the whole being combined and arranged upon the shaft ofthe candlestick, as shown and described. f
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own invention I alix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WM. H. ROBY.
