DESIGN FOR A SUPPORT AND BACK FOR FURNITURE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 36,235, dated February 24, 1903.

Be it known that I, JOSEPH KEPPLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented and produced a new, original, and ornamental Design for a Support and Back for Furniture, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part hereof, and which is a perspective View of a support and back, showing my new design.

As illustrated in the drawing, the leading or material feature of my design consists in the outline or configuration of the support and back, in conjunction with the surface ornamentation thereof. The outline or configuration of the back consists of an upper trans.- verse panel a, a lower transverse panel I), the three upright pedestals d, d, and d and the series of zigzag panels a, connecting the upperpanelawith thepanelb. Theupperpanel a has upon its face the ornaments a, a and a representing the heads of Indian gods known as Katzinas. The upper edge of the panel a is substantially zigzag at the points a a and a above and surrounding the respective ornaments a, a and a.

The three pedestals d, d, and d form the body-like continuation for the heads a, a and a of the Katzinas and merge or join the panel a with angular pieces d representing the arms of the Indian gods. The base of each pedestal d, d, or d has ornainentsfof zigzag outline to represent, conventionally, the feet of each Katzina. The zigzag connecting-panels e, connecting the upper and lower panels a and I), represent, allegorically, the lightning descending from the panel a, which represents, allegorically, the clouds supported by the Indian gods.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The ornamental design for a support and back for furniture, substantially as herein shown and described.
