'WILLIAM A. BROIVN, OF NE? YORK, N. Y.
DESIGN FOR A SPOON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 29,354, dated September 20, 1898.
Application filed August 20,1898. Serial No. 689,150. Term of patent 3% years.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, \VILLIAM A. Bnowrr, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented, designed, and produced a certain new and useful Design for Spoons; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention consists in the design for spoons illn strated in the accompanying drawings and described and claimed in the following specification.
The drawings form a part of the specification.
Figure 1 is an elevation of the obverse side of a spoon and its handle embodying my design, and Fig. 2 is a similar view of-the reverse side of the same.
As illustrated in the views, the figure of Victory is contained at a in the upper wide part of the handle, holding aloft in her right hand a wreath b and having a sword c in her left hand hanging down at her side. Behind this figure of Victory are arranged the Cuban and American flags d and e, crossed, as shown in the drawings, and with their folds drawn partially around the lower part of the figure. Immediately below the figure of Victory is arranged the shield f, on which she is represented as standing, and on the shield is portrayed an anchor g. The shank of the handle between the shield and the bowl is ornamented with a flowing arrangement of laurel h and a strip of ribbon 1', these being entwined and extending into the bowl, the sprig of laurel running for some distance along one edge and the ribbon extending in graceful folds along the other. The reverse of the bowl is plain and unornatnented except by the leaflike ornamentation j at the point where the handle joins the bowl. The shank of the handle is formed as shown at 7;, and the laurel h and ribbon i of the obverse side are shown as appearing on the reverse just behind the shield f.
The upper enlarged part of the handle is ornamented with the figure of an eagle I with wings half-spread and with arrows on in his claws. Immediately below the eagle is an American shield '12, and partially around and below the shield a horn-of-plenty o is arranged, a gear-wheel p being also partially shown near the month of the horn.
Below the enlarged part of the handle, between this and the shank and on what would be the back of the lower part of the figure of Victory, the handle has scallops g on its edge and a sprig of fruit and flowers 1', that are represented as falling from out the horn-ofplenty, while the ribbon 2' extends upward toward the same.
At the extreme upper end of the handle, on the reverse, is seen the back side of the wreath b which Victory is represented on the obverse as holding aloft.
Having thus described my design I claim 1. In the design for a spoon the obverse, substantially as described and shown.
2. In the design for a spoon the reverse, substantially as described and shown.
3. The design for a spoon, substantially as described and shown.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
VILLIAM A. llRO\VN.
