VILLIAM A. JAMESON, OF NIAGARA FALLS, NEXV YORK.
DESIGN FOR A HANDLE FOR SPOONS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 27,202, dated June 15, 1897.
Application filed April 26,1897. Serial No. 634,043. Term of patent '7 years.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. J AMEsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Niagara Falls, in the county of Niagara, State of New York, have invented and produced a new and original Design for Handles of Spoons, &c., of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, showing a part thereof.
Figure l is a plan or elevation view of the front or obverse side of a spoon the handle of which embodies my design, the dotted lilies showing how the handle may be applied to a fork; and Fig. 2 is a similar view of the reverse or rear side of the spoon and handle.
The general outline of the handle is of the violin-shaped order. As the handle leaves the bowl it contracts slightly in the usual form, after which the sides run nearly parallel with each other for about one-third the length of the handle, after which it expands and then contracts slightly, forming a graceful swell at e. This part of the handle is bordered both on the obverse and reverse sides by elongated bead-like or iuted ornaments l), small and large alternately, leaving `a raised burnished center c on front and a at center on back. Frein this point the handle widens with long and distinct inward and out- Ward curves until near the widest part of the handle is reached, these curves forming, in connection with the sorolllike ornaments d both on front and back of handle, a very attractive border. From the point last mentioned the outline widens slightly, and then gradually curves inward in a succession of short inward and outward curves e until the apex is reached. These curves, in eonnee tion with the short iiuted ornaments, which extend inward and downward, form the border for the upper end of the handle. The ornaments, as described, form a continuous border from point of handle where it joins the bowl to apex, leaving an unbroken raised burnished center extending almost the entire length of the handle, which expands and eontracts in a manner corresponding with the outline of the handle on the f rout or obverse side, the reverse side being flat. The ornaments give to the center a double shield-like effect in the broadest part of the handle. The bead-like or luted ornaments I; extend also from the apex to and upon the widest portion of the handle on the obverse side. The whole is executed in what is known as the Baroc or Louis XIV style of ornaments.
The essential features ot this design, whether of the front or back face of the llandle, consist of a violin-shaped outline having scroll ornaments at the sides of its widest portions, bead -like ornaments, large and small, alternating at the sides of the narrow portion extending from the bowl to the scroll ornaments, inward and outward curves with bead -like ornaments extending from the widest portion to the apex, a raised center on the obverse side extending nearly the full length of the handle, and the center of the reverse side flat.
What is claimed as new isl. The design for the handle of a spoon or similar article, as set forth.
2. In the design for the handle oi' a spoon or similar article, the design of the obverse side of the handle, as set forth.
In the design of the handle of a spoon or similar article, the design of the reverse side of the handle, at set forth.
WILLIAM A. JAMESON. [1.. s]
