W Fatima z 7 UNITED STATES PATENTZOFFICE.
JEAN TI'IEOBALD, OF NORTH ATTLEBOROUGII, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO THE FRANK M. \VI'IITING & COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
DESIGN FOR A BACK FOR BRUSHES OR SIMILAR ARTICLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 29,275, dated August 30, 1898.
Application filed July 22, 1898. Serial No. 686,624- Term of patent 3% years.
To aZZ whom it flea/y concern:
Be it known that I, JEAN THEOBALD, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Attleborough, in the county of Bristol, State 5 of Massachusetts, have invented and produced a new and original Design for the Back of a Brush or Similar Article, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the drawing accompanying and form- [0 ing a part of the same.
The drawing is a View of the back of a hairbrush, of which A is the handle and the body.
The leading features of my design consist r 5 in the peculiar and novel outline and configuration composed of a series of husk ornameniations combined with elaborate foliated scroll ornaments.
More particularly described, my design is as follows: Following the swelled contour of the handle A at a distance from its margin are a series of husk ornaments a a, each series inclosed by a marginal and interior bead I) c, the inner members of which converge near the handles base and terminate in diverging scroll ornamentations cl. These re treat upwardly a distance 011 either side of the handle 6 e and form the terminal contour of the same. Immediately below the junction of the brush handle and head are oppositelydispo'sed scrolls f f, their convex portions contiguous at the axial line g, their heads terminating in foliatcs. springing downwardly from g and partially overlapping the central boss 0 of the handle are conventionalized leaf forms jj with a triple-scroll termination. Rising upwardly from g on either side of an oblong plain ornament m and expanding to cover most of the lower brush-body are elaborate leaf ornaments 7t 7t with scroll termi- 4o tions, beneath which are single husk ornaments '6 i. The lower center of the brushhead is an elliptical surface Z, embraced by inwardly-inclined foliates n n with interior leafy branches 1; 1). Following the outer contour of foliates a n are series of husks q q, treated as those in the handle. The crest ornamentation begins at the junction of foliates n n with a flower '2' and pendent leaf 3. Above the flower 0' elaborate leafy and floral 5o foliates 2f t roll outwardly on either side, resting on the beads u u. Between the heads of the scrolls 6 2f rises the crowning ornament v, consisting of converging scrolls embracing a plain boss .2 and flanked by husks 00 a3.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The design for a back of a brush or similar article herein shown and described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
JEAN THEOBALD. \Vitnesses:
HERMAN R. IIOLZNER, IIORATIO E. BELLows.
