UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIAM U. COUMAN, OF IROYIDICI UIC, HIIODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR TO THE GREENLEAF & CROSBY (OMIANY, OF JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA.
DESIGN FOR A HANDLE FOR KNIVES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 27,588, dated August 31, 1897.
Application filed July 23,1897. Serial No. 645,741. Term of patent 7 years.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, XVILLIAM C. UODMAN, asuhject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Providence, in the county of Providenee and State of Rhode Island, have invented and produced a new and original Design for Handles for Knives and Similar Articles; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference heinghad to the accompanying drawings, forming part thereof.
Figure 1 is a view of one side, and Fig. 2 a View of the other side, of a handle, showing my design.
The leading features of my design consist in the raised ornamentations representing in low relief oranges, with orange-leaves, a coat of arms on one side and a sally-port or gate on the opposite side of the handle.
In the drawings, A indicates the ferrule on the end of the handle to which the article eonneeted therewith is attached. One side of the handle extends in nearly a straight line a, from which the curve I) extends to the convex end of the handle. On the opposite side the convex line 0 connects with the easy curve (I, which extends to the ferrule A, giving to the outlines of thehandlethe appearance of a hilt.
The ferrule A is ornamented with the conventional acanthns-leaves 1 in low relief. The orangeleaves 9 extend from the ferrule toward the middle of the handle and have hetween the pointed ends the representation of an orange-blossom ii.
The middle portion of one side of the handle has the representation of a sally-port or gate 4, and on the opposite side the coat of arms, surmounted with a crown. ()n the upper end of the handle a cluster of oranges '1, orange leaves and blossoms, in low relief, cover the surface. To the eye the handle presents, in outline and ornamentation, tropical luxuriance.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The design for a handle for knives and similar articles herein shown and described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
