DESIGN FOR A BACK FOR BRUSHES OR SIMILAR ARTICLES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 29,531, dated October 25, 1898.

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM C. CODMAN, of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented and produced a new and original Design for the Back of a Brush or Similar Article, of which the following is a specification, reference beiug had to the accompanying drawings, formiug part thereof.

Figure l is a view of the back of a brush, showing my design. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional View through the main body of the back on the line A A of Fig. 1.

The leading feature of my design consists in the brush-back, provided with raised floral ornamentation at the lower end of thehaudle, from which extend a series of long stems, terminating in scrolled ends. The stems are interlaced and extend upwardly on the handle. Similar curved stems, interlaced with scrolls, extend from the handle along each side of the oval back, inclosing a central panel.

In the drawings, B indicates the oval back of the brush, and O the back of the handle; 3, the raised floral ornament at the end of the handle,and 4. 4 curved narrow stems,terminating in scrolled ends and connecting with the ornamentations 5 and 6, consisting of interlaced curved stems, partly foliated. From the contractedneck of the handle extend along each side of the oval back the long curved stems interlaced with the foliated scrolls 8 8 and 9 9, abutting on the ornament 10 at the upper end of the oval back. Small floral ornaments are interspersed with the stem and scroll ornamentation. The stem, scroll, and floral ornamentations are raised above the surfaces of the panels and the mar ginal surfaces of the brush-back.

To the eye the whole presents the appear ance of interlaced long floral stems curved to conform to the oval outline of the brushback and the handle.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The design for the back of a brush or similar article substantially as herein shown and described.
