Description

DESIGN.
A. RFAGKSON.
SPOON, &o.
No. 20,812. Patented June 2, 1891.
W M I M h S Y N w n A UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AUSTIN F. JACKSON, OF TAUNTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO THE REED do BARTON CORPORATION, OF SAME PLACE.
DESIGN A FOR SPOON, 80.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Design No. 20,812, dated June 2, 1891.
Application filed May 8 ,1891. Serial No. 392,108. Term of patent 7 years.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, AUSTIN F. JACKSON, residing at Taunton, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented and produced a new and original Design for the Handles of Spoons, &c., of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which the figure is a face view of a spoon the handle of which is designed according to my invention.
For this design I have devised and adopted figures and symbols commemorative of the historic character Leif Ericson, the reputed or legendary discoverer of America.
The leading feature of my design consists of the figure of a man representing Leif in erect position, attired in the costume of the period in which he lived, including a winged helmet, his right arm being uplifted and holding aloft a battle-ax, a shield being held over and covering his breast.
The minor feature of the design is an ornamental border which surrounds such figure, the upper portion of such border terminating in a cluster of ornaments, which overhang said figure, and a transverse wreath-like ornament below said figure.
In the drawing, a indicates the figure of Leif; b, the battle-ax; c, the shield; 01, the ornamental border; 6, the cluster of ornaments, and f the transverse wreath-like ornament.
All of the aforesaid ornamentations appear upon the face end of a spoon-handle, and be low the same on the shank of the spoon appear the words and numerals Leif Ericson, 1000; but such words and numerals form no part of my design, and may, if desired, be omitted.
While the aforesaid ornamentations appear upon a spoon-handle, it is manifest that they may appear upon handles of forks, knives, ladies, and the like.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The design herein specified for the handles of spoons, forks, knives, &c., as set forth and represented.
