ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
AUSTIN i JACKSON, OF TAUNTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO THE REED & BARTON CORPORATION, OF SAME PLACE.
DESIGN FOR A SPOON, 80C.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 20,835, dated June 16, 1891.
Application filed May 8, 1891. Serial No. 392,109. Term of patent '7 years.
To all whom it may concern/.-
Be it known that I, AUSTIN F. JACKSON, residing at Tannton, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented and produced a new and original Design for the Handles of Spoons, Knives, &e., of which the following is a specification, reference be ing had to the accompanying drawing, in which the figure represents a face view of a spoon the handle of which is designed according to my invention.
For this design I have devised and adapted figures and symbols commemorative of the discovery of America, the leading of which is the representation of the ship Santa Maria.
The letter a indicates the handle ornamentation, the same consisting of a marine view, including the representation of a caravel under full sail, and b indicates an ornamental border which surrounds the ship, such border being oval-like, its base having a central ornament, while its upper end is formed into a foliage cluster 0, such cluster also forming the end of the handle, and consisting of the outwardly, inwardly, and then upwardly ex tended portions, which are centrally joined by a depending ornament, which overhangs the highest mast-head of the ship.
d indicates a wreath-like transverse armament under the base of the border 1), below which on the shank of the handle are the words and numerals Santa Maria, H92, which may, however, be omitted, as they form no part of my design.
It will be understood that while I have shown my design as applied to a spoon-handle, it may be used on handles of forks, knives, ladies, (36.
What I claim is- The design for handles of spoons, forks, knives, rise, consisting of the handle ornamentation composed of the ship a, the border I), the foliage cluster 0, and the transverse ornament (Z, all arranged substantially as herein shown and described.
