AL 291 E Y DESIGN.
H. BERRY. BACK FOB, BRUSHES, Gas.
No. 19,261. Patented Aug. 13, 1889.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY BERRY, OF SIIEIIION, CONNECTICUT.
DESIGN FOR A BACK FOR BRUSHES, 80C.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 19,261, dated August 13, 1889.
Application filed July 17, 1889. Serial No. 317,809. Term of patent 7 years.
To all whom it may concern.-
lle it known that I, HENRY BERRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Shelton, in the county of Fail-field and State of Con necticut, have invented and produced a new and original Design for the Backs of Brushes and like Articles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part thereof, and which shows a plan view of a brushback ornamented in accordance with my design.
The leading features of my design consist in the shape or outline of the back and in the details of ornamentation which appear upon the surface of said back.
A is the back, which is considerably enlarged in out-line at its rear end, as seen at a, and which narrows to a gracefully-rounded point, as seen at b. The surface of the back is ornamented with a design the details of which are as follows: Near the lower end of the back appears a convolved figure 0, out of which are developed fluted figures (I, increasing in length each over that preceding, and
the whole forming a figure shaped somewhat like a conventional shell, the base of which covers the greater part of the enlarged lower end of the back. of the back is a scroll c, from the base of At the upper curved end which a spray having leaves f and flowers 9 extends downward along the surface of the back and terminates near the convolved fig ure out of which the shell is developed. A trifoliate figure 71, whose sides project along the edges oi the enlarged rear end of the backing and which at its center extends over and upon the shell before described, joins the back to the handle i, which is enlarged near its upper end and tapers and curves to its extremity.
I claim The design for the ornamentation of the backs of brushes and like articles, the same consisting of the back enlarged and rounded at its lower end and curving and tapering thence to a diminished and rounded point, the large shell-shaped figure commencing at the enlarged end of the back and diminishing toward the upper end, and the floral and foliate spray commencing near the upper end of the back and terminating near the convolved portion of the shell, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY BERRY.
