Description

DESIGN.
. NEIL.
CARPET.
. Patented Oct. 11, 1887.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN NEIL, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO THE BIGELOVV CARPET COMPANY, OF CLINTON, ll'iASSAOHUSETTS.
DESIGN FOR A CARPET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 17,780, dated October 11, 1887.
Application filed September 8, 1887.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN NEIL, of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented a new and original Design for Carpets, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying photograph, which forms a part of the same.
The invention relates to a design to be worked into or upon surfaces, such as carpets or similar fabrics; and it consists in the novel configuration and grouping of figures herein specifically shown and claimed.
The accompanying photograph is :1 face view of a carpet showing my new design.
My design is composed of a body part, A,
and a border, 13.
The main feature of my design is a broad curving ornamental band that divides the face of the carpet into irregular circular spaces, in
23 which are groups of leaves and flowers. The ornamental baud itself is not continuous, but starts out from and disappears under groups of leaves. The center of the band is ornamented with a regular stemwork supporting 25 circular flowers and narrow leaves. In one of the circular spaces is a large spreading flower with broad leaves curled in upon themselves at their ends. Around this flower is a fine stem-andleaf work with small gem-shaped Serial No. 249,192.
Term of patent 3Q years.
flowers. In another circular space is a cluster -o of bell shaped flowers and broad curling leaves, and around them a mass of light sprays or twigs. Here and there are bunches of similar large broad leaves with curling ends.
My border 13 has an inner margin ornamcnted with leaf forms. It has a similar ornamental band forming consecutive semicircles. Within the semicircular space is a cluster of leaves curving outward from a central point, so as to fill the space symmetrically. 1,0 The cluster of leaves proj eels across and above the band. In the angular spaces between the semicircles are other leaf clusters. The outer part of the border is ornamented with little circular flowers and small leaves. 5
\Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a design for carpets, the body A, substantially as shown.
2. In a design for carpets, the border B, sub stantially as shown.
3. The design for carpets, consisting of the body A and border B, substantially as shown.
