Application filed July 16,1887. Serial No. 244,552. lcrm of patent 'l yours.
To @ZZ whom zt may concern:
Bc it known that I, ANDREW LITTLE, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented and produced a new and original Design for a Font of Printing-Type, ofwhich the following is a specification.
The nature of my design is clearly shown in the accompanying typographie impression, to which reference is made; and it consists of'an unshaded letter in which certain portions of the letters are made heavier than the other 3' portions of the letters, and the letters thus present the appearance of being composed of heavy and light lines combined.
In the A theleft-hand upand-down portion is extended below the line and is lighter than the right-hand portion, followed by the light horizontal line at its base upon the left, and the cross ornament is composed of the light horizontal line. In the B, D, P, and It the upper rounding portion of the letter extends above theup-and-down portion, which is orlnented by the light horizontal line upon the right hand. In the O the lower portion of the letter is heavier than the upper portion, having upon its right hand the light vertical line extending downward. In the E and F the light cross-line of the letters is crossed upon the right hand by the light vertical line extending downward from the upper cross portion. The Gis ornamented by thelight lineextended downward from the upper right-hand portion, and also by the light horizontal line crossing it. In the H the right-hand up-and-down portion is extended below the line, and is heavier at its upper portion. TheJ is ornamented by the light horizontal line crossing its lower portion upon the left. The lower right-hand portion of the K is extended below the line, and its upper portion is heavier than the lower portion. The Lis ornamented by the lighthorizontal line above, and its lower righthand termination is heavier upon the right and, is crossed by the light vertical line. The left-hand termination of the M is heavier at its base, and its right-hand up-and-down portion is extended below the line and is made heavier at its upper part. The rounding por tions of the 0 are gradually widened upon the left hand and right hand. This characteristic is preserved in the Q, the tail of which is Widf cned at its base and is extended lo the right. The upper and lower rounding portions of the S are made heavier than the rest of the letter, and it is ornamented above upon the right and below upon the left by the light vertical lines. The cross portion of the T is made heavier upon the right hand. The up-and-down por tion of the U is heavier upon the right hand. The upanddown portion of the V is heavier at its upper right-hand corner. rlhe central portion of the W is looped and its 11p-auddown portions connected bythe light horizontal line. The X is extended below the line upon the right. The upper right-hand portion ofthe Y is heavier than its lower portion. The lower right-hand cross portion ofthe Z is made heavier toward the right hand, and is ornamented by the light vertical line` which ornamentation is also found at the upper left hand.
The character ofthe design is preserved in the lowercase, the numerals, the symbol St, the dollar and pound-sterling marks, and the points, as shown.
Having new described my invention, lclaixn as new- The design for a font of printing-type, as shown and described, the same consisting of an unshaded letter in which certain portions of the letters are made heavier than the other portions of the letters, thus presenting the appearance of being composed of heavy and light lines combined, the left-hand portion of the A extended below the line and lighter than the right-hand portion, followed by the light horizontal line at its base upon the left, and the cross ornament composed of the light horizontal line, the B, D, l?, and R having the upper rounding portion extended above the up-anddown portion ornamented by a light horizontal line upon the left hand at the base and right hand at the top, the lower portion of the C made heavier than the upper portion and having upon its upper right hand the light vertical line extending downward, the E and F having the light cross-line of the letter crossed upon the right hand by the light vertical line extending downward, the G ornamented by the light line extended downward from the upper right-hand portion and by the light horizontal line crossing it, the H IOO having the right-hand up-and-down portion. extended below the line and heavier at its upper portion, the J ornamented by the light horizontal line crossing its lower portion upon the left, the lower right-hand portion of the K extended below the line and the upper portion heavier than the lower portion, the L ornamented by a light horizontal line above and its lower right-hand termination heavier upon the right and crossed by a light vertical line, the M having its left-hand termination heavier at its base and its right-hand up-anddown portion extended below the line and heavier at its upper portion, the rounding portions of the O gradually widened upon the left hand and right hand, which characteristic is preserved in the Q, the tail of which is Widened at its base and extended to the right, the upper and lower rounding portions ofthe S made heavier than the rest of the letter, ornamented above upon the right and below upon the left by the light vertical line, the
