Description

DOCUMENT NUMBER JJAZYZM UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWIN O. RUTHVEN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO DAVID WOLFE BRUCE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
DESIGN FOR TYPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 16,4452, dated December 29, 1885. Application filed December 13, 1884. Serial No. 150,313. Term of patent 14 years.
.To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWIN C. RUTHVEN, (assignor to DAVID WOLFE Bianca) of the city andcounty of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented and produced a new Design for a Font of Printing-Type, of which the following is a specification.
The nature of my design is clearly shown in the accompanying typographic impression, to
to which reference is made; and it consists of a condensed vertical letter of the class known as Gothic, shaded on the right and below by a series of light fine horizontal lines parallel with each other and following the configura- [5 tion of the letter. Between the shading and the letter is left a space which shows white between the letter and the shading.
The character of the design is preserved in the lower-ease diphthongs, punctuation marks, numerals, and symbol &, and dol lar and pound-sterling marks.
My design differs from the patent granted WVilliam W. Jackson, April 3, 1883, No.13,834, in that in the design therein shown and de- 2 5 scribed not a Gothic but an ornamental letter provided with ceriphs is shown, and that some of the letters are extended above and some below the line, and that in others one limb is longer than the other limb or upand-down portion. It also differs from the design shown on page 9 of Oopleys Ornamental Ornaments,
in that it is more condensed, and does not present, as that does, a double shading consisting of a light line extending around the letter, followed upon the right and below by a series of fine horizontal lines. In my design, also, it will be noticed that as the space between the letters and the shading has the configuration of the letters, it gives to the design the efi'ect of blocks in perspective having letters on 0 their tops, thus distinctively differing from the design above mentioned.
What I claim is- The design herein described and shown, consisting in a type or font of Gothic letters 5 which have at their right edges and below them. parallel horizontal lines of shading following the configuration of the letters, and a space between the lines of shading and the letters, such space also having the configura tion of the letters, whereby is formed the ap pearance of blocks in perspective having letters on their tops, as set forth.
EDWIN O. RUTHVEN.
In presence of- F. M. CUNNINGHAM,
CHAS. W. HOPPLE.
