To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, HARRY COLLINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Patterns and Methods of Publication, of which the following is a speciiication.

The method commonly employed in the promulgation of styles is to publish in newspapers, magazines, etc. a cut of the article such as a dress or other garment, showing the style, with a brief description thereof and a reference to a pattern therefor, usually by number, which may be obtained by sending the stated price to an address given. 'Io obtain the pattern .of the garment, -or other article, by this method, both time and expense are necessary.

The purpose of my invention is to incorporate in the publication itself the pattern of the garment, or other article, in such a way that the person desiring the same may obtain it by subjecting the paper on which the publicat-ion appears, to a simple process, without expense and without delay, thereby adding to the value of the publication, such as a newspaper, magazine, etc. and without in any manner Curt-ailing its advertising or reading space or obscuring or in any way interfering with the legibility of the printed or reading matter which it may contain, all as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

The accompanying drawings are merely diagrammatic and for the purpose of illustrating my said invention, which consists in outlining upon the paper used for printing the newspaper, magazine or other publication in which the cut or advertising matter relative to the new style of garment or other article is to be carried, in invisible ink, or a specially prepared chemical fluid, or by perfor-ations, or dots, the pattern of said garment or other article, as indicated in said drawing.

In carrying out my invent-ion, the pattern is preferably printed or stamped upon the paper prior to the printing of the newspaper or magazine but will not be- Serial No. 632,799.

come visible until subjected to certain treatment, such as with a weak solution of a chemical substance which acting upon the chemicals of which the invisible ink is composed, will develop a color and bring the lines of the pattern into view; or, as an alternative proposition, will act upon the chemicals of which the fluid with which the lines of the pattern are made, will decompose the paper and cause the. pattern to separate from the remainder of the sheet.

It will be understood, of course, that this invention is not limited in its application to any particular line of articles or garments, but may be used for providing patterns for all kinds of garments and other wearing apparel, both for women and children, and men and boys as well. It may also be emplo-yed in like manner in the publication of plans for buildings, etc.

The use of invisible ink is well understood and by this term I wish to be understood as including any chemical solution or other substance capable of the use indicated as well as the substance commonly called by this title.

Having thus fully described` by said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by LettersPatent, is:

1. A newspaper having on the same page normally visible printed matter and a normally invisible pattern or design for wearing apparel adapted to be rendered visible by treatment of the paper with appropriate chemical reagents, substantially as set forth.

2. A process of making newspapers by providing on a page a dress pattern or design in sympathetic ink of a character' requiring special treatment to render the pattern apparent to the eye, drying the sheet, and thereafter printing visible reading matter on said page, substantially as set forth.
