Description

-STOVE DESIGN FOR A COOKING Design No. 12,453, dated September 13, 1881 DESIGN FOR A C OOKlNG-STOVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 12,453, dated September 13, 1881.
Term of patent 14 years.
To all whom "it may concern Be it known that I, EDGAR. W. ANTHONY, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, a citizen of the United States, have made a certain new and useful Design for Cooking-Stoves, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being bad to the accompanying photograph, forming a part of this specification, to which reference is made in explaining its nature.
It is an improvement upon the design described in Design Patent No. 6,905, of October 21, 1873, granted Edward Mingay, assignor.
The first feature of the design relates to the ornamentation of the oven-door; and it consists in a rectangular or parallel-sided raised portion, a, with ornamentally-augled corners b, which preferably is polished or-nickel-plated upon its outer surface. It incloses the panel 0, towhichisfastened, oruponwhichisformed, the oval raised bead or border d,which surrounds the words New Hub, or other title or name. The rib or border (Z and the letters of the name are preferablypolished, or polished and plated, either with silver or other metal, and the letters of the name preferably are raised from the panel inclosed by the said border d. The surface of the panel inclosed by said border d preferably is roughened or fretted, and the portion of the panel 0 without the border d and within the border a is preferably finished smooth. The remainder of the door surrounding the border a may be ornamented in any suitable manner, if desired. I do not claim the particular ornamentation thereon shown in the photograph. The effect of light and shade produced by finishing the doors as herein described is very beautiful. The polished borders are light, the fretted or stipple work is dark, and the panel 0, when blacked by blacking in the ordinary way, is of a darker tint than the borders. The border (I, if nickel-plated, makes the contrast between the dull color of the panel it incloses and the livelier black of the panel surrounding it more apparent.
The second feature of my design relates to the fire-pot door 6. This door takes the place of the two doors jointly employed with stoves of this class. This dooris rectangular in shape, its longest dimension being vertical, and it has a raised rectangular border, f, which, with the angles h, is shaped substantially as shown, and the space within the border is divided by the raised connecting portion j into two panels, k and l, panel It being, with the extension of its upper portion, substantially square, and the panel I being shaped as shown in the photograph. The lower portion of the raised connecting party is semicircular in shape, and the surface of this raised connecting portion may be ornamented by two circles, m and n, with central projections and radiating lines, and the concentric circles 0, which may inclose a name and date, if desired, or it may be otherwise suitably ornamented. I prefer that it be polished or plated upon its outer surface. The upper panel, K, may have a central medallion, p, or other ornamental piece.
The third feature of my design relates to the vertical box U, surrounding the lip-take, and the bracket or side pieces 8 and shelf t. The box is rounded upon its front corners, has a rectangular-shaped border, a, raised from its front surface, which may be polished, if desired and which incloses a panel, a, in which there is centrally arranged a monogram of the Smith & Anthony Stove Oompan y, as represented in the photograph, or some other ornamental fig are. The lower portion of the box and brackets or side pieces are each provided with borders o, iuclosing panels 12, and the outer panels may have the central ornament, c and the central panel may have the figures 1880, or any other figures,or any suitable ornament. The remainder of the side pieces are open-work, substantially of the design and outline shown in the photograph. The shelfis open-work,and has the polished border to and the open back an, of the design and outline substantially shown in the photograph.
The fourth feature of the design relates to the cabinet-base y. This base is adapted to support the main part of the stove, and it is substantially of the same shape in cross-section as the stove, is provided with the polished projecting edge 3 and legs 31', which have sunken panels g and polished feet y and the connecting portions 31 forming part of each leg, and having an outline, substantially as represented, inclosing suitable scroll-work. Between the legs upon the front the under lines of the base have an elliptic or oval curve at y, and above the curve, but below the polished border ;2 th re is suitable scroll-work or ornamental figures. Above the projecting border 1, and beneath the upper portion, y, of the base, are arranged long panels 3 on the sides and ends, or either, which bear an ornamental figure, as shown, and the panel g at each corner.
Of course the design of fire-pot door shown and described may also be used as a plate or panel without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fullydescribcd my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. Thedesignforstove-doorsand stove-plates and panels, consisting of the outer border, a, inclosing the panel 0, upon which is formed or fastened the center-piece, eonsistingof the oval border d, bearing words, as described.
2. The design for stove-doors, consisting of the border h, the two panels k l, and the conneeting-piecej, straight on its upper edge and semicircular on its lower edge, bearing suitable ornamentation, all substantially as described.
3. The design for box for inelosing the uptake or flue, having its front corners curved, the rectangular-shaped border inelosing a panel, as specified, and the raised border '0 inclosing a horizontal panel, all substantially as shown and described.
4. The design of bracket or side piece for supporting a stove-shelf, as shown and described.
5. The design ofstove shelf and back, shown and described.
6. A design for a cabinet-base, consisting of the border y, the panel y, containing an ornamental figure, and the corner-panels 3 substantially as described.
7. The design for a stove-leg, shown and described.
8. The design for a base of a stove, consisting of the border 3 the legs a, as shown and described, and the central curved portion, y, and ornamentation between it and the border y, all substantially as shown and described.
