F. W. COPELAND, J. & F. A. MAGEE.
STOVE.
Patented Dec. 20, 1881.
INV N El UNITED STATES FREDERIG WV. COPELAND, OF BOSTO PATENT OFFICE.
N, AND JOHN MAGEE AND FRANK A.
BOSTON, M ASSA C] I USETTS.
DESIGN FdR A STOVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 12,616, dated. December 20, 1881.
Application filed July 30, 1881. Term of patent 14 years.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that we, FREDERIU W. Corn- LAND, of Boston, and J OHN MAGEE and FRANK A. MAGEE, both of Chelsea, all in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, citizens of the United States, have invented a certain new and useful Design for Stoves, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying pho- IO tograph in describing the same.
This invention embraces the following features: first, a design for a top plate of a parlar or other heating stove; second, a design for panel for any portion of a stove; third, a de- I 5 sign for a door for any part thereof; fourth, a design for ornamenting the base; fifth, a design for a leg; sixth, a design for an ash-pit door; seventh, a design for the upper portion of the stove; eighth, a design for the side,
front, and top rails, ninth, the design of the stove as a whole.
Reference is made to the accompanying photograph in further describing the features of the design.
The top plate, A, is rectangular in shape and inclined from its upper central portion gradually to the edge. It has the series of lines, grooves, or headings a, parallel with its edge, running entirely around it and dividing the upper surface into two parts, the lower part being entirely without ornamental figure and the upper part having suitable ornamental scroll-work, preferably in cameo or intaglio, and the sections thus ornamented are bounded 5 upon their sides by a single bead, preferably started from each corner a and extending to the section a. Upon the upper section, at the front, the name of the stove may be incised or cast in relief. The entire surface and edge of the plate are preferably burnished.
The panels B B have a general resemblance to each other, and one is adapted more especially for use upon the sides of the stove, and the other upon the front of the stove, and their 4 5 configuration can best be understood by reference to the photograph. The panel. B is also adapted for a side panel, and is somewhat wider than the panels 13 B, and its configuration is very fully shown by the photograph.
[ The design for thedoorsGincludes the frame,
substantially represented by the photo graph, and an ornamental figure at one corner of the frame' These features are well illustrated by the photograph. They are in tended "for use in connection with lights of mica; but of course they may be entirely of iron without departing from the spirit of the design.
The base portions E, or, more strictly speak ing, those portions of the stove beneath the baseplate l), with the exception of the legs, are an open-work design, comprising a very elaborate arrangement of cross bars or rods interwoven by scroll-work and flowers, and are well shown by the photograph.
The design for the leg embraces two medallions, one upon each face thereof, near the top, and a representation of scroll work upon each face at the bottom, and reference is again made to the photograph for a further illustration thereof.
The design for the ash-pit door consists, mainly, in the horizontal lines which are drawn from side to side of the door, and which in clude not only the door, but the sliding damper-pla-te, and this feature is very clearly shown in the photograph.
The upper part, F, of the stove is provided with panels in which tiles or metal panels of any design may be set, and the position of the So tiles or panels in relation to the top plate of the stone and their ornamental border of parallel grooves or recesses is fully represented in the photograph.
The designs for side, front, and top rails are 8 represented very well in the photograph.
The shape of the stove has been incidentally described in connection with the description of the several specific features above given; but as there are some features which have not 0 been stated we will briefly represent it as a whole.
The stove is rectangular in cross-sccti on, and has a projecting portion, forming a part of the base, whichisalso rectangularinshape. There 5 are three principal plates: first, the upper or top plate, A; second, the lower or base plate,
D, and, third, the plate G, which is the top plate of the base-extension. These plates may be burnished or polished upon their surfaces and edges, or either, if desired. The upper plate, in addition, may have suitable scrollwork of an ornamental character. Immedr atelybclow the upper or top plate is arranged the section of tile or panel work F. Below the tiles or panels are an ornamental border and plain panels, or panels having substantially little decoration. Then below these plain or substantially plain panels are arranged the highly-ornamental panels B B, and these panels are immediately above the doors. There are two sets of doors, and between them there is, upon the front, a molding of any suitable configuration, and upon the sides the rails. The lower doors, preferably, are somcwhatinclincd inwardly at the top and outwardly at the bottom, and below them, at the side and at the front, on either side of the damper, is a plain or substantially plain molding of horizontal lines, either in relief or in intaglio. Upon the side portions of the stove, below the lower doors, and forming the ends of the base portion, are the highly-ornamental. panels B. The front of the base portion has forits decoration chietly horizontal. lines. Below the base-plate D is arranged the open-work between the legs. The lines of ornamentation, excepting those used in the panels, are, it will benoticed, horizontal upon the sides and front, excepting at the corners, and vertical there, and the prevalence of this feature throughout the stove gives it a unique and very ornamental appearance. The rails also add tothe ornamental character of the stove.
The stove may have additionally a plate of metal, burnished or not, as desired, abovethc top plate or the cover or door therein; but this we do not consider an essential featureof the design. The shape, nroportion, tiles and ornamental metal work give the whole stove an exceedingly graceful and beautiful appearance, which is intensified when the fire is burning, because of the red light through the mica doors.
In lieu of the tiles at the top, ornamental metal panels may be used, and in lieu of the metal panels at the sides of the base tiles may be employed.
The rails, door-handles, knobs, hinges, &c., may be of copper, brass, or nickel-plated, as desired.
Of course we do not confine ourselves in the use of this invention to a stove having the ornamentation herein indicated, for we claim as an especial feature a stove which has the general outline describedthat is, rectangular in crosssection in both base and upper portions, the base portion, however, extending outwardly at the front, but not at the sides, and the body extending upwardly from the base a distance more than the height of the base portion.
Having thus fully described the features of our design, we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. The design for a top plate of a stove, substantially as shown and described.
2. The designs B '3 for stove-panels, substantially as shown. and described.
3. The design (.1 for a stovc-door, substantially as shown and described.
4. The design 13 for a stove-panel, substantially as shown and described.
5. The design for stove-door for an ash-pit, substantially as shown and described.
(5. The design E for a stove border or base, substantially as shown and described.
7. The design for a stove-leg, substantially as shown and described.
8. The design of rails for a stove, substantially as shown and described.
9. The design for a stove, comprising for its principal features the panels 1 BB, the doors and the ornamental base-panel E, substantially as shown and described.
10. The design for a stove rectangular in crosssection, having a proj ecti n g base portion, an upper line of tile-work, alowerliue of pan els upon the side, intermediate ornamental work of the character indicated, and horizontal and vertical lines disposed substantially as specified, all as shown and described.
11. A design for a heatiugstove rectangular in cross-section both in body and base,tl1e base projeetingat the front, but not upon the sides, and the body extending upwardly from the base a distance more than the height of the base portion, all substantially as shown and described.
.12. A design for a heating-stove rectangular in erosssection, having an upper ornamental section and an intermediate central section, comprising an ornamental frame-work upon the front and sides for the reception of transparent lights, and abase portion having ornamental side panels or sections, all substantially as shown and described.
