Description

llivirnn iStations PATENT FFICE.
ISIDOR E. MAYER, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
TROUSERS.
SEEGIFICATIGN forming part of' Letters Patent No. 693,728, dated February 18, 1 902.
Application led January Z4, 1901. Serial No. 44,5 90. (No model.)
To cir/ZZ whom, it may concern:
Beit known that I, ISIDOR E. MAYER, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented new and useful Improvements in Trousershof which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in trousers and which are especially intended for boys and which are so constructed that they can be made to protect the stockings and knees of the wearer or can be folded to have the appearance of an ordinary pair of trousers, all of which will be fully described hereinafter.
The object of my invention is to provide the fronts of the lower ends of the trouserslegs with extensible and folding iiaps, which flaps can be made to extend down in front of the knees of the wearer for protecting the stockings and can also when desired be folded up inside of the legs of the trousers and, if desired, secured there, whereby the trousers will have the appearance of an ordinary garment of that character.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a pair of trousers embodying my invention, the same having the extensible iaps unfolded and extended down in front of the knees of the wearer. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing flap folded within the legs of the trousers.
Referring now to the drawings, A indicates a pair of trousers which are of the ordinary construction. The legs B of these trousers are provided at their front sides with the eX- tensible and folding flaps C. These flaps, as shown in Fig. l, are extended down in front of the knee of the wearer for the purpose of protecting the knee of his stocking and also for the purpose of protecting the knees of the wearer and are preferably held in contact with the stocking through the medium of an elastic strap or band D, which has one end a rigidly connected with the inner side of the lower end of the liap and its opposite end provided with a hook b, adapted to engage an eye c, connected to the lower inner opposite side of the said flap. While I prefer to use an elastic band or strap, it will be readily understood that any other form of material can be used without departing from my invention.
For the purpose of enabling the wearer to draw the flaps into their folded positions within the lower ends of the legs of the trousers, as shown in Fig. 2, a tape or cord e has its lower end connected to the inner side of the said flap and its upper end suitably attached to the inner side of the waistband of the trousers. There will be one of these tapes or cords for each leg of the trousers, as will be readily understood, and the cords or tapes are of such length that the liaps can be eXtended,as shown in Fig. l. Vhen itis desired to fold the flaps within the lower ends of the legs of the trousers, the wearer can accomplish this by loosenin g the securing band or elastic at the lower end of the flaps and drawing upward on the upper ends of the tapes or cords until the iiaps are folded within the lower ends of the trousers-legs. These flaps can be secured in their folded positions in any desired manner. So, also, the tapes or cords for drawing the iaps in their folded positions can be omitted, if desired, without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
One way of securing the flaps in their positions is by providing the inner sides of the trousers-legs with buttons n, with which the buttonholes gin the lower ends of the iaps will be buttoned. Another way is to provide the tapes or cords e at a suitable point intermediate their ends with suitable hooks t', which are adapted to engage suitable eyes 0r loops 7c at the inner side of the waistband of the trousers when the flaps are in their folded position and which will serve to prevent the naps from becoming extended or unfolded.
It will be understood that the flaps may be made of any desired material; but they eX- tend from the front lower edge of the legs, and the whole constitutes a convertible article having many practical advantages.
This simple invention overcomes the annoying trouble of the ordinary knee-caps, which are continually coming off or falling down out of position, and enables the wearer to have always at hand invisible knee-caps ready for immediate use.
